Time Reversal Optical Tomography: Locating Targets In A Highly Scattering Turbid Medium, Binlin Wu, W. Cai, M. Alrubaiee, M. Xu, S. K. Gayen

Publications and Research

A time reversal optical tomography (TROT) method for near-infrared (NIR) diffuse optical imaging of targets embedded in a highly scattering turbid medium is presented. TROT combines the basic symmetry of time reversal invariance and subspace-based signal processing for retrieval of target location. The efficacy of TROT is tested using simulated data and data obtained from NIR imaging experiments on absorptive and scattering targets embedded in Intralipid-20% suspension in water, as turbid medium. The results demonstrate the potential of TROT for detecting and locating small targets in a turbid medium, such as, breast tumors in early stages of growth.

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

ABSTRACT: INTRODUCTION: Back pain, a significant source of morbidity in our society, is related to the degenerative changes of the intervertebral disc. At present, the treatment of disc disease consists of therapies that are aimed at symptomatic relief. This shortcoming stems in large part from our lack of understanding of the biochemical and molecular events that drive the disease process. The goal of this study is to develop a model of early disc degeneration using an organ culture. This approach is based on our previous studies that indicate that organ culture closely models molecular events that occur in vivo in …

Guantánamo Bodies: Law, Media, And Biopower, Cary H. Federman, Dave Holmes Oct 2011

Guantánamo Bodies: Law, Media, And Biopower, Cary H. Federman, Dave Holmes

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The idea of the Guantánamo detainee as a Muselmann, the lowest order of concentration camp inmates, contains within it important implications for the new understanding of sovereignty in the era of Guantánamo, in an age of exception. The purpose of this article is to explain the status of those who are detained at Guantánamo Bay. Stated broadly, in assessing that status, we will emphasize the connection between the altered meaning of sovereignty that has accompanied the placing of prisoners in an American penal colony in Cuba and the biopolitical status of the prisoners who reside there. More particularly, we …

Proposed Highway Pits Bolivia's Indigenous Against Each Other And President Evo Morales, Andrés Gaudín Oct 2011

Proposed Highway Pits Bolivia's Indigenous Against Each Other And President Evo Morales, Andrés Gaudín

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

Native peoples from the Bolivian Amazonia—the lowlands—who do not feel represented by President Evo Morales are staging a prolonged protest against the construction of a highway through a natural park that is also their ancestral habitat. On Aug. 15, they began a more than 600 km march to La Paz, the capital, planning to arrive in the second half of October. They will meet directly with Morales, who is also indigenous and the first head of state to receive an indigenous delegation at the Palacio Quemado, the seat of government.

Green Economy Does Not Necessarily Mean Sustainability, Adriana Sánchez Oct 2011

Green Economy Does Not Necessarily Mean Sustainability, Adriana Sánchez

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

A number of multinational corporations have adopted the concept of a "green economy," a model that allows the private sector to implement practices that save energy and reduce pollution. These corporations have not hesitated in using the terms "green" or "sustainable" in their mission statements and in marketing products ranging from shampoo to hydroelectric projects. And while there are some good-faith efforts to promote good environmental practices, critics argue that the moves are more cosmetic and that the bottom line remains profit and not sustainability.

Free And Open Source Software In Computing Education, Stephen Jacobs, Clif Kussmaul, Mihaela C. Sabin

Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) exemplifies the merit and successes of open content, understood broadly as creative work that explicitly allows sharing and further changes by anyone, whether an individual or organization. Although the benefits of improving computing education with open source practices are largely acknowledged, transforming teaching to create effective learning environments has many challenges. The panelists will bring different perspectives on teaching strategies and curricular content they have used in their classrooms. These perspectives will exemplify key issues with FOSS-based education and FOSS-based IT systems. The developer and user communities established around FOSS-based IT systems are of …

Free And Open Source Software Development Of It Systems, Mihaela C. Sabin Oct 2011

Free And Open Source Software Development Of It Systems, Mihaela C. Sabin

Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship

IT system development, integration, deployment, and administration benefit significantly from free and open source software (FOSS) tools and services. Affordability has been a compelling reason for adopting FOSS in computing curricula and equipping computing labs with support infrastructure. Using FOSS systems and services, however, is just the first step in taking advantage of how FOSS development principles and practices can impact student learning in IT degree programs. Above all, FOSS development of IT systems requires changes to how students, instructors, and other contributors work collaboratively and openly and get involved and invested in project activities. In this paper I examine …
