Indexing And Economic News: Coverage Of The 2009 Economic Stimulus Debate, Portia Levasseur Jan 2011

Indexing And Economic News: Coverage Of The 2009 Economic Stimulus Debate, Portia Levasseur

LSU Master's Theses

Indexing theory predicts that, in certain issue areas, media coverage will index levels of elite debate. Elite controversy, the theory predicts, will embolden the press to include a broader variety of sources and coverage should reflect a more open public debate. This has important implications for public opinion. Proponents of the theory expect that it will operate in a variety of issue areas of news coverage, but support for the theory exists largely in the realm of foreign affairs coverage. This study examines television coverage of the 2009 economic stimulus package to evaluate levels of indexing for a domestic, macroeconomic …

"The Prince And His People": A Study Of Edwardian Propaganda, 1547-1549, Allison Claire Cooper Jan 2011

"The Prince And His People": A Study Of Edwardian Propaganda, 1547-1549, Allison Claire Cooper

LSU Master's Theses

One of the most important events of Edward VI’s reign, the 1549 rebellions, has been intensely studied by historians of the period. However, most monographs of the rebellions pinpoint the enclosure commissions or Edward Seymour’s inability to govern effectively as the reasons behind the riots. What is ignored is the intimate relationship between the eastern rebels’ language in their petitions and the rhetoric employed in evangelical propaganda from Edward’s accession in January 1547 to the outbreak of the rebellions in May 1549. My research in Edwardian propaganda during Somerset’s protectorate reveals a dialogue established between evangelicals and Catholics concerning doctrine …

A Systematic Study Of Xylella Fastidiosa Strains Isolated From Pecan, Grapevine, Oleander, And Sycamore In Louisiana, Rebecca Ann Melanson Jan 2011

A Systematic Study Of Xylella Fastidiosa Strains Isolated From Pecan, Grapevine, Oleander, And Sycamore In Louisiana, Rebecca Ann Melanson

LSU Master's Theses

Xylella fastidiosa causes disease in a number of economically important crops and landscape shrubs and trees including grapevine, citrus, oleander, and sycamore. In pecan, X. fastidiosa causes pecan bacterial leaf scorch (PBLS), which leads to defoliation and reduces nut yield. No economically effective treatments are available for PBLS. In order to improve PBLS management practices, it is necessary to determine the subspecies of X. fastidiosa strains that infect pecan so potential sources of inoculum can be identified. Multiprimer PCR and phylogenetic analyses using nucleotide sequence data from the 16S-23S rDNA intergenic transcribed spacer (ITS) region and pglA consistently identified strains …

Using X-Ray Computed Tomography To Quantify Damage Of Hot-Mix Asphalt In The Dynamic Complex Modulus And Flow Number Tests, Hao Ying Jan 2011

Using X-Ray Computed Tomography To Quantify Damage Of Hot-Mix Asphalt In The Dynamic Complex Modulus And Flow Number Tests, Hao Ying

LSU Master's Theses

The dynamic modulus test is conducted based on the assumption that no damage is induced during the testing process and that measurements are conducted within the linear viscoelastic region. In addition, significant damage is expected to occur during the flow number test process. While these assumptions are well-defined, the levels of damage taking place during these tests have not been quantified. The objectives of this study were to quantify the levels of damage in the dynamic complex modulus and flow number tests using x-ray computed tomography (CT) and to characterize the microstructural properties of asphalt mixtures under loading. Four Superpave …

Numerical Studies Of Flow In Porous Media Using An Unstructured Approach, Nathan Matthew Lane Jan 2011

Numerical Studies Of Flow In Porous Media Using An Unstructured Approach, Nathan Matthew Lane

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Flow and transport in porous media is relevant to many areas of engineering and science including groundwater hydrology and the recovery of oil and gas. Porous materials are characterized by the unique shape and connectivity of the internal void structures which give rise to a large range in macroscopic transport properties. Historically an inability to accurately describe the internal pore-structure has prevented detailed study of the role of pore structure on transport. In recent decades however, the combination of high resolution imaging technologies with computational modeling has seen the development of fundamental pore-scale techniques for studying flow in porous media. …

Hear (No) Evil, See (No) Evil, Speak (No) Evil: Artistic Representations Of Argentina's "Dirty War", Juliana Theresa Reineman Jan 2011

Hear (No) Evil, See (No) Evil, Speak (No) Evil: Artistic Representations Of Argentina's "Dirty War", Juliana Theresa Reineman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to analyze Argentina’s “Dirty War; in it, I argue that our view of the Other is the key to not repeating the past. Literature has long been accepted as a resource for understanding culture; this dissertation moves beyond literature, and includes photography, art, and film to demonstrate how artists have represented and responded to this period of political oppression. Adopting a psychoanalytic approach for my research, I begin with a literary analysis of multiple texts which exhibit features of what Anne Whitehead calls “trauma fiction,” texts in which the narrative voice displays the repetition …

Genome-Wide Detection Of Novel Regulatory Rnas In E. Coli, Rahul Raghavan, Eduardo Groisman, Howard Ochman Jan 2011

Genome-Wide Detection Of Novel Regulatory Rnas In E. Coli, Rahul Raghavan, Eduardo Groisman, Howard Ochman

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The intergenic regions in bacterial genomes can contain regulatory leader sequences and small RNAs (sRNAs), which both serve to modulate gene expression. Computational analyses have predicted the presence of hundreds of these noncoding regulatory RNAs in Escherichia coli; however, only about 80 have been experimentally validated. By applying a deep-sequencing approach, we detected and quantified the vast majority of the previously validated regulatory elements and identified 10 new sRNAs and nine new regulatory leader sequences in the intergenic regions of E. coli. Half of the newly discovered sRNAs displayed enhanced stability in the presence of the RNA-binding protein …

Analytical Design Method For Cold Production Of Heavy Oil With Bottom Water Using Bilateral Sink Wells, Wenting Qin Jan 2011

Analytical Design Method For Cold Production Of Heavy Oil With Bottom Water Using Bilateral Sink Wells, Wenting Qin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Few heavy oil reservoirs with strong bottom water drives have been developed successfully because of severe water coning. Water coning tends to cause low ultimate recovery, low well productivity, and high water production. Although thermal and gravity-assisted methods might improve recovery in oil reservoirs, such methods are widely perceived as either economically unfavorable or technologically infeasible. This study proposes a new, cold production technique, called Bilateral Water Sink (BWS), to meet those challenges. The BWS method suppresses water cresting by producing oil and water simultaneously from separate, horizontal wells completed in the oil and water zones; the oil and water …

Expression, Identification, And Bioactivity Of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin From Lmh/2a (Leghorn Male Hepatoma)Cell Line, Amanda Cecile Broussard

LSU Master's Theses

Erythropoietin (EPO) is the main cytokine regulator for red blood-cell production in the human by binding to erythropoietin receptors to promote erythroid proliferation, survival and differentiation. Administration of recombinant human EPO (rhEPO) as a therapeutic has been shown to improve renal and non-renal anemia and this success has led to a high medical global demand. Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, yeast, and bacteria have been used to produce rhEPO but nevertheless there is still a need for a low-cost and high quality expression system for rhEPO. LMH/2A cells, as an alternative model, were transfected with the codon optimized human EPO …

Photochemical Reaction Products Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Adsorbed At An Air-Water Interface, Franz Stefan Ehrenhauser Jan 2011

Photochemical Reaction Products Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Adsorbed At An Air-Water Interface, Franz Stefan Ehrenhauser

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are ubiquitous pollutants resulting from incomplete combustion and hence normally unavoidable. The kinetic aspects of the environmental degradation process have received considerable attention; however, not much is known about the degradation products themselves. Aqueous solutions of naphthalene, acenaphthene, 9H-fluorene, phenanthrene and pyrene were subjected to UVB light in a bulk-phase and a thin-film reactor to assess the identity of the formed photodegradation products. To aide in the challenging analysis of these mixtures, a novel analytical technique based on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to UV diode-array detection and dopant-assisted atmospheric pressure photoionization mass …

Inside Out, Kathleen Ann Pheney Jan 2011

Inside Out, Kathleen Ann Pheney

LSU Master's Theses

Because I process my external world internally, I often think of my mind as a vessel-housing my internal reality: fears, demons, curiosities, joys, sorrows, etc. My body of work is comprised of paintings and drawings that present surreal interpretations of these occupants as depicted through line, color, gesture and form and, as such, are true self-portraits in that they bring the “inside out.”

This paper discusses the growth and increasing significance of e-mail in the business and personal environment, and how unsolicited bulk commercial e-mail, also known as spam, has become a significant drain on technical and economic resources. It analyzes the statutory and self-help efforts to combat spam, with a specific focus on block lists and automated spam filters, and describes how alleged spammers have brought lawsuits in U.S. courts claiming they had been wrongfully included within block lists and filters. Finally, it describes some possible claims under U.S. law, then argues for a revision to current statutes to mandate a higher …

Layout-Based Substitution Tree Indexing And Retrieval For Mathematical Expressions, Matthew Schellenberg Jan 2011

Layout-Based Substitution Tree Indexing And Retrieval For Mathematical Expressions, Matthew Schellenberg

Theses

We introduce a new system for layout-based indexing and retrieval of mathematical expressions using substitution trees. Substitution trees can efficiently store and find hierarchically-structured data based on similarity. Previously Kolhase and Sucan applied substitution trees to indexing mathematical expressions in operator tree representation (Content MathML) and query-by-expression retrieval. In this investigation, we use substitution trees to index mathematical expressions in symbol layout tree representation (LaTeX) to group expressions based on the similarity of their symbols, symbol layout, sub-expressions and size. We describe our novel substitution tree indexing and retrieval algorithms and our many significant contributions to the behavior of these …

Development Of A Hybrid Atomic Force And Scanning Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect Microscope For Investigation Of Magnetic Domains, Andrew James Lawrence

Dissertations and Theses

We present the development of a far-field magneto-optical Kerr effect microscope. An inverted optical microscope was constructed to accommodate Kerr imaging and atomic force microscopy. In Kerr microscopy, magnetic structure is investigated by measuring the polarization rotation of light reflected from a sample in the presence of a magnetic field. Atomic force microscopy makes use of a probe which is scanned over a sample surface to map the topography. The design was created virtually in SolidWorks, a three-dimensional computer-aided drafting environment, to ensure compatibility and function of the various components, both commercial and custom-machined, required for the operation of this …

Toward A Taxonomy Of Diversity At Work: Developing And Validating The Workplace Diversity Inventory, Aisha Smith Taylor

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research was to develop a taxonomy of workplace diversity and examine its implications for understanding and predicting diversity at work. A 7-dimension taxonomy was originally developed by reviewing contemporary literature on diversity in the workplace. The taxonomy is grounded in Social Identity Theory. Preliminary research found that each of the seven dimensions of the taxonomy were present in 78 critical incidents describing work-relevant diversity dynamics. The current study reports the development and administration of an instrument, the Workplace Diversity Inventory (WDI), which was used to empirically examine the 7-factor model of the taxonomy in over 20 …

Effects Of Evaporative Cooling In The Thermal Performance Of Green Roofs, Giorgina Beatriz Castillo Garcia Jan 2011

Effects Of Evaporative Cooling In The Thermal Performance Of Green Roofs, Giorgina Beatriz Castillo Garcia

Dissertations and Theses

Green roofs have become an important urban mitigation technology due to their ability to address multiple environmental issues. One of the most common benefits attributed to green roofs is the reduction in heating and cooling loads in buildings by dissipating heat through evaporation. This study focuses on evaluating the effect that evaporative cooling has on the thermal performance of green roofs. Sponge and floral foam were used as porous media for their ability to retain water inside its body, transport it to the surface, evaporate it at a constant rate and for their different pore sizes. Test trays containing sponge …

The Moving To The Beat Documentary And Hip-Hop Based Curriculum Guide: Youth Reactions And Resistance, Jennifer Wallin-Ruschman Jan 2011

The Moving To The Beat Documentary And Hip-Hop Based Curriculum Guide: Youth Reactions And Resistance, Jennifer Wallin-Ruschman

Dissertations and Theses

Many of the academic and popular treatments of hip-hop overlook the complexity of the phenomenon. Hip-hop is often portrayed solely as a source of corruption and regressive tendencies or, alternatively, as a sort of savior for otherwise marginalized individuals and source of revolutionary power. This thesis situates hip-hop between these poles and draws out its progressive and regressive aspects for analysis. Considering its vast global influence and a growing body of academic literature, hip-hop has been notably understudied in the field of psychology. Alternatively, educational theorists and practitioners have realized the power of hip-hop in revisualizing an emancipatory education that …

Toward A Richer Shade Of Blue: The Impact On Oregon Police Officer Perceptions Of Racial Minorities After Anti-Racial Profiling Training, David Andrew Kline

Dissertations and Theses

Four fatal shootings, during police interactions, of unarmed people-of-color occurred in the Portland, Oregon Metro Area from 2003 to 2010 calling into question from members of the community whether or not the officers involved and hence their representative police departments had been racially profiling. Of interest in this study is whether or not cutting edge anti-racial profiling police officer trainings have an impact on how officers in Oregon perceive members of racial minority groups. A review of literature found that previous inquiries into racial prejudice among police officers may be present and that previous efforts to address racial ethics in …

Race, Ethnicity And Attitudes Toward Same-Sex Unions In The United States, Claudia Plesa Jan 2011

Race, Ethnicity And Attitudes Toward Same-Sex Unions In The United States, Claudia Plesa

Dissertations and Theses

Recent political and cultural trends have led to an evaluation of the meaning of marriage within American society, and especially marriage as it concerns couples of the same sex. However, little research has been done to find out how attitudes toward same-sex marriage might vary according to race and ethnicity. Drawing on data from the 2004 National Politics Study, the author investigates same-sex marriage attitudes and tests hypotheses concerning the attitudes of various American race-ethnic groups. This study employs multinomial logistic regression analysis to compare attitudes of African Americans, Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites. Results indicate that even when socio demographic …
