Campus Sexual Assault: How Oregon University System Schools Respond, Michael William Murphy Jan 2011

Campus Sexual Assault: How Oregon University System Schools Respond, Michael William Murphy

Dissertations and Theses

College is usually thought of as a time where students, often living alone for their first time, are encouraged towards healthy risk-taking behavior, as well as social, intellectual, and vocational development. Unfortunately for female students, college becomes the time of their lives where they are exposed to the highest risk of sexual victimization. Many colleges across America have taken steps to address the significant problem of sexual assault on their campuses. However, even with rising concern about the sexual victimization of college students, there remains very little systematic information published about the content of sexual assault policies, protocols and programs …

Designing And Using Virtual Field Environments To Enhance And Extend Field Experience In Professional Development Programs In Geology For K-12 Teachers, Frank Douglas Granshaw Jan 2011

Designing And Using Virtual Field Environments To Enhance And Extend Field Experience In Professional Development Programs In Geology For K-12 Teachers, Frank Douglas Granshaw

Dissertations and Theses

Virtual reality (VR) is increasingly used to acquaint geoscience novices with some of the observation, data gathering, and problem solving done in actual field situations by geoscientists. VR environments in a variety of forms are used to prepare students for doing geologic fieldwork, as well as to provide proxies for such experience when venturing into the field is not possible. However, despite increased use of VR for these purposes, there is little research on how students learn using these environments, how using them impacts student field experience, or what constitutes effective design in light of emerging theories of geocognition.

Youth Voices Of Bounty And Opportunity: High School Students' Experiences With Food And Community, Kara Marie Gilbert Jan 2011

Youth Voices Of Bounty And Opportunity: High School Students' Experiences With Food And Community, Kara Marie Gilbert

Dissertations and Theses

Currently, garden-based research does not include input from young adults about their experiences and perspectives as individuals in garden-based programs, specifically those that address issues of food and community. To address this void, this qualitative research examines youth perspectives and engagement in garden-based community projects in Olympia, Washington, and Medford, Oregon. The sample of 11 students was chosen from these projects that use food as a means to engage the community and educate underprivileged young adults about local food systems. The main question that the research addresses is: Why, and in what ways, are young adults appropriate agents for community …

Online Or Face-To-Face?: Relationship Satisfaction And Attraction In Romantic Relationships Across Two Media, Anne Nicole Zmyslinski Jan 2011

Online Or Face-To-Face?: Relationship Satisfaction And Attraction In Romantic Relationships Across Two Media, Anne Nicole Zmyslinski

Communication

The purpose of this study was to examine romantic relationships that began through face-to-face (FtF) interaction or computer-mediated communication (CMC). Two hundred seventy-six participants who were currently in romantic relationships that began in person (196) or online (80) completed an online questionnaire. The study explored several relational variables (relationship satisfaction, intimacy, trust, communication satisfaction, physical attraction) and tested for differences in the two types of relationships; however, the data were not consistent with the hypotheses and research questions. Post-hoc tests revealed that sample characteristics (including sex, exclusivity of relationships, same/opposite sex relationships, and length of relationships) accounted for several differences …

Purchasing For A Cause : Millennials' Perceptions Of The Cause-Related Marketing Campaigns Of Susan G. Komen For The Cure, Alicia Elizabeth Phillips

Communication

Millennials make up the largest generation to date and are highly involved in the support of social causes. Due to their philanthropic interests, Millennials have recently become the target of cause-marketing campaigns. Two studies utilizing focus groups were conducted with 70 college students in order to study the Millennial generation's perception of cause-related marketing campaigns. Study 1 focused on Millennials' general perceptions of cause-related marketing. Study 2 examined the Symbiotic Sustainability Model by focusing on Millennials' perceptions of partner number and relationships of a specific NGO (non-governmental organization), Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Focus group data from both studies …

U.S. Bilateral Trade With Its Major Trading Partners And Russia, Valentina Belousova Jan 2011

U.S. Bilateral Trade With Its Major Trading Partners And Russia, Valentina Belousova

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This study examines U.S. exports and imports to/from its major 15 trading partners and Russia. To analyze U.S. export and import flows the gravity model approach is used. Factors affecting U.S. bilateral trade flows with its 16 trading countries are evaluated using Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). Annual data from 2000 to 2009 are used for this study. Goods traded between the U.S. and its trading partners are disaggregated into three groups based on the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC). Results show that major factors affecting both U.S. export and import flows are distance and change in polity score. Also …

Juvenile Perceptions Of The Police And Police Services, Michael Brian Sanden Jan 2011

Juvenile Perceptions Of The Police And Police Services, Michael Brian Sanden

Criminal Justice and Political Science

This study examined the impact of four categories of variables (demographics, neighborhood context variables, contact with the police, and vicarious influence variables) on juvenile perceptions of the police and police services. Data analyzed in this study were collected as part of a larger research evaluation that examined the impact of law enforcement efforts in relation to violent crime. Students from one middle school were surveyed. Statistical analysis consisted of a series of One-Way ANOVA tests and several ordinary least squares regression (OLS) models. The study found significant results for both dependent variables within all four categories of independent variables. Policy …

The Impact Of Baby-Friendly Hospital Designation, Employment Status, Parity, And Other Social-Ecological Factors On Lactation Duration For New Mothers In Upstate New York, Jennifer Lynne Bailey Dejong

Education

The purpose of this study, that analyzed the existing Feeding Your Infant (FYI) dataset, was to examine the impact of Baby-Friendly (BF) Hospital designation, employment, parity, and other social-ecological factors on lactation status at three months postpartum in upstate New York. The FYI dataset was analyzed using an adapted version of the Bronfenbrenner Social-Ecological Systems Framework. A covenience sample of 842 breastfeeding mothers was surveyed at baseline between two sites - one a BF designated hospital, and one a community-based hospital with a mature breastfeeding program. Of the 515 mothers who returned the three month survey, 409 (79.4%) were still …

Classical Rhetoric For Modem Problems: Accommodating Stasis For The W Ac/Wid Curriculum, Seth Andrew Archer Jan 2011

Classical Rhetoric For Modem Problems: Accommodating Stasis For The W Ac/Wid Curriculum, Seth Andrew Archer

English

This paper performs a case study of scientific information as it moves between media, in this case, from the journal Science to the New York Times. In order to monitor the rhetorical shifts between texts, both are analyzed using a modified four tier taxonomic system of stasis as outlined by Jeanne Fahnestock and Marie Secor (140-143, 1983). As the information from the different texts is analyzed under a singular lens, in this case 'the stases,' the rhetorical accommodations, both the subtle and the not subtle, become obvious in a manner since stasis is a "general scheme capable of accounting for …

Analysis Of A Facebook Freakout: Rhetoric Of Agency In The Places Privacy Debate, Abigail Rose Bakke Jan 2011

Analysis Of A Facebook Freakout: Rhetoric Of Agency In The Places Privacy Debate, Abigail Rose Bakke

English

New technologies often generate fear regarding privacy threats, and social networking sites like Face book have lately experienced the brunt of the criticism. Face book users, even as they post greater amounts of information online, express concern over privacy violations. This paradox suggests that the issue is more complex than the private/public dichotomy and that the rhetoric used during these protests could yield insights regarding the competing worldviews expressed in a privacy debate. My paper examines discourse by the ACLU and Face book at the time the controversial Facebook Places application came out. I use cluster criticism to show how …

A Study Of Two Generations Of Culturally Diverse Community College Students Views On Leader Attributes In Self And Others, Paula Jeanine Hodkowski Jan 2011

A Study Of Two Generations Of Culturally Diverse Community College Students Views On Leader Attributes In Self And Others, Paula Jeanine Hodkowski

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

One community college mission is preparing students for the expectations and opportunities of the workplace including roles as collaborators and leaders. Increasingly, representatives from “cultures” of generation, gender, and diverse ethnicities are gaining an education in community colleges. Research supports that cultural aspects and views of others impact an individual's leader identity.

The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental study was to determine if participants representing millennial and generation X self-report leader behaviors of “modeling the way” and “enabling others to act”; and rate leader traits in others responding to “fits my image of a leader;” And to determine if their …

Memorandum On China’S Measures For Addressing Sea Level Change, Zhang Zhongmin Jan 2011

Memorandum On China’S Measures For Addressing Sea Level Change, Zhang Zhongmin

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

This paper describes the current state of China’s recognition of sea level rise in the context of global climate change. The author analyzes official state documents addressing sea level rise, including the annual China Sea Level Communiqué, and compares them with local government initiatives and perspectives from non-governmental sources such as academia, NGOs and the general public. The paper concludes that, while China has taken many commendable steps towards addressing sea level rise, there are still considerable obstacles to be overcome. Finally, the author recommends that local governmental and non-governmental actors play a larger and better defined role. The author …

From A Weak Tribual To A Branch Of Government: The Supreme Court Of The United States From 1789 To Marshall, Dale Edward Paul Yurs Jan 2011

From A Weak Tribual To A Branch Of Government: The Supreme Court Of The United States From 1789 To Marshall, Dale Edward Paul Yurs

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Each branch of the federal government has changed substantially since its creation in 1789. Today, the people directly elect both houses of Congress and citizens hold the President more accountable for his actions. The federal judiciary has grown as well. The third branch of government may have started as a fairly weak tribunal, but during the early national period it grew to an equal branch of government. The Justices redefined the judiciary by their own actions. They worked to amend the circuit riding requirements, adopted a new style of opinions, and asserted the authority of judicial review. Through primary evidence, …

A Comparison Of Bullying In Public And Private Schools In A Small Midwestern Community, Daniel J. Ryan Jan 2011

A Comparison Of Bullying In Public And Private Schools In A Small Midwestern Community, Daniel J. Ryan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Little attention has been given to the possible differences in bullying at private and public schools. Little significant research exists on bullying at private schools, its characteristics, and its differences from public schools. Inattention to this segment of the population can lead to broad and inappropriate generalizations that what works in public schools will work in private schools. This dissertation investigated to what degree there were differences between the number of incidences, types of bullying, and locations of bullying that took place at a public and private school in a small Midwestern community. The research examined the following factors and …

Comply-And-Explain: Should Directors Have A Duty To Inform?, John C. Wilcox Jan 2011

Comply-And-Explain: Should Directors Have A Duty To Inform?, John C. Wilcox

Law and Contemporary Problems

Wilcox discusses the compliance of the duty to inform of directors of publicly held companies. The expected long-term impact of a duty to inform would be to "operationalize" corporate governance policies and accustom boards to provide greater transparency about their deliberations and decisions on matters relating to governance, business oversight, and strategy. Regardless of whether a directors' duty to inform can be inferred from the Model Business Corporation Act or other provisions of state law, it could be implemented through the adoption of a charter or bylaw amendment initiated by the board or by shareholders.

Embedded Right Where The Students Live: A Librarian In The University Residence Halls, Dallas Long Jan 2011

Embedded Right Where The Students Live: A Librarian In The University Residence Halls, Dallas Long

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

The practice of an embedded librarian in university residence halls is not a new concept. Residence hall libraries and librarians have existed in various forms since the 1920s but declined in number through the decades. As embedded librarianship emerges (or re-emerges) at many colleges and universities, perhaps the idea of librarians working principally in the residence halls will be revisited and reinvigorated. My position is sometimes professionally isolating, as I have one foot in the University Library and one foot in the Student Affairs Division. As a full member of neither, I must be an active participant in my own …

Dueling Nationalities: Dual Citizenship, Dominant And Effective Nationality, And The Case Of Anwar Al-Aulaqi, Abraham U. Kannof Jan 2011

Dueling Nationalities: Dual Citizenship, Dominant And Effective Nationality, And The Case Of Anwar Al-Aulaqi, Abraham U. Kannof

Emory International Law Review

This Comment argues that when hearing a case involving a suspected terrorist who holds dual citizenship, a domestic court should first determine, as a threshold matter, the dominant and effective nationality of the accused. This determination is significant because a dominant foreign national can essentially be treated as a non-citizen, for the purposes of adjudication, and may not be entitled to the full rights and protections of domestic citizenship.
