Fourier Pseudospectral Methods For The Variable-Order Space Fractional Wave Equations, Yanzhi Zhang, Xiaofei Zhao, Shiping Zhou Jan 2026

Fourier Pseudospectral Methods For The Variable-Order Space Fractional Wave Equations, Yanzhi Zhang, Xiaofei Zhao, Shiping Zhou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose Fourier pseudospectral methods to solve the variable-order space fractional wave equation and develop an accelerated matrix-free approach for its effective implementation. In constant-order cases, fast algorithms can be designed via the fast Fourier transforms (FFTs), and the computational cost at each time step is O(Nlog⁡N) with N the total number of spatial points. In variable-order cases, however, the spatial dependence in the power s(x) leads to the failure of inverse FFTs. While the direct matrix-vector multiplication approach becomes impractical due to excessive memory requirements. Hence, we propose an accelerated matrix-free approach for effective implementation in …

The Indelible Flaws Of Conviction Integrity Units, Sarah Gottlieb Jan 2026

The Indelible Flaws Of Conviction Integrity Units, Sarah Gottlieb

Scholarly Articles

Conviction Integrity Units within prosecutors’ offices have doubled in number over the last 10 years. Leaders of the innocence movement initially praised these units, believing they were necessary for the future of innocence work given their unique access to discovery, and scholars hoped Conviction Integrity Units would lead prosecutors away from fighting against claims of innocence to sincere and open review of wrongful convictions. But, as Conviction Integrity Units proliferated, the question of whether prosecutors can fulfill the mandate of these offices and conduct thorough review of their colleagues’ work has received insufficient inquiry, particularly given that official misconduct continues …

“I’M Throwing The Red Flag”: Online Peer Responses To Teen Descriptions Of Abusive Relationship Behaviors Posted On Reddit, Kyla M. Cary, Morgan E. Pettyjohn, Erin Nolen

Faculty Publications – Psychology

Adolescents in the United States experience abusive relationship behaviors at alarming rates; yet formal education on navigating harmful relationship dynamics is lacking. Thus, many teens use the internet to disclose abuse experiences and seek information or advice from their online peers. To better understand the types of responses, advice, and information teens receive from their online peers, we analyzed peer-to-peer discussions about abusive relationship behaviors from teens in the Reddit community r/teenrelationships. Using qualitative content analysis, we analyzed comment responses (n = 154) to Reddit posts (n = 56) in which teen users discussed experiences of interpersonal harm …

From Player Piano To Generative Ai: Artificial Expression And The Law Of Copyright, Douglas Lind, Adrienne Holz Jan 2026

From Player Piano To Generative Ai: Artificial Expression And The Law Of Copyright, Douglas Lind, Adrienne Holz

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

American copyright law has experienced challenges and sometimes faltered when confronting mechanical reproduction. This Article retraces the rise and diffusion of the player piano and the phonograph, examining how they reshaped the making and listening to music. As these technologies spread throughout American society more rapidly than copyright law could adjust, courts misclassified piano rolls and records as merely mechanics. Reducing these new fixations to machinery rather than embodiments of human expression left recorded human musical performances inadequately protected, which facilitated piracy. Applying these lessons, this Article contends that generative AI training implicates copyright law in ways not dissimilar to …

Image Repair Differences Between Human And Ai-Generated Messaging: The Case Of The Chicago White Sox, Joseph R. Blaney, Kevin R. Meyer, Peter M. Smudde, Stephen K. Hunt, Lance R. Lippert, K. Megan Hopper, Roy D. Magnuson

Faculty Publications - Communications

With 121 losses in 2024, the Chicago White Sox set an unwanted record for the most losses in a single Major League Baseball season. Team owner Jerry Reinsdorf wrote a letter apologizing to fans following the season, including additional attempts at image repair. The increasing availability of artificial intelligence (AI) raises unique questions concerning how apology messages ought to be generated and how effective such messages are with disgruntled fans. To determine if the real message from Reinsdorf was effective, we generated a similar apology using AI. Fans were randomly assigned to read the real message from Reinsdorf, one generated …

A Meaningful Theory: 25 Years Of Relational Dialectics Theory In The Journal Of Family Communication, Lindsey J. Thomas, Kristina M. Scharp

Faculty Publications - Communications

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Journal of Family Communication (JFC), the present essay celebrates two and a half decades of relational dialectics theory (RDT) in JFC, highlighting the reciprocal relationship between theory and journal. The authors, both of whom have a breadth of experience in conducting RDT research, first provide a history of RDT and an overview of key terms and assumptions. The essay then traces the history of RDT through the first 25 volumes of JFC. A review of the RDT-based original research articles in JFC turns an eye toward the family …

Bodies, Bottles, And Emotions: Emotional–Material Tensions In Exclusive Pumping, Jessica M. Rick Jan 2026

Bodies, Bottles, And Emotions: Emotional–Material Tensions In Exclusive Pumping, Jessica M. Rick

Faculty Publications - Communications

Exclusive pumping (i.e., providing breast milk solely via pumping) is increasingly common in the United States, yet remains largely invisible in public discourse. This study uses photo-elicitation interviews to examine how exclusive pumping mothers narrate the emotional and material tensions of their feeding journeys. Participants’ photographs revealed profound pride in sustaining breast milk for their children, alongside frustration at not nursing “naturally.” Participants also documented the substantial responsibilities, financial costs, and emotional labor inherent in exclusive pumping. Despite these challenges, mothers framed their experiences through cultural narratives of intensive and total motherhood, positioning exclusive pumping as a morally and socially …

Human Rights In The U.S.: Handbook For Public Interest Attorneys (2026 Version), Lauren E. Bartlett Jan 2026

Human Rights In The U.S.: Handbook For Public Interest Attorneys (2026 Version), Lauren E. Bartlett

Faculty White Papers

Legal services attorneys, public defenders, law clinics, and other public interest law practitioners, fight every day to secure basic rights for the most vulnerable persons in the U.S.—among them, people living in poverty, racial minorities, children, the elderly, and immigrants. Yet, U.S. law more often than not falls short of providing a “floor” of minimum protections for these marginalized individuals. More expansive guarantees are found under international human rights law, and some advocates in the U.S. successfully incorporate human rights norms, language and strategies into their domestic work to help advocate for increased protections.

This Handbook was designed for attorneys …

Analyzing Educators’ Roles In Preparing Students For Civic Engagement In Arkansas Communities, Mia L. Hastings Jan 2026

Analyzing Educators’ Roles In Preparing Students For Civic Engagement In Arkansas Communities, Mia L. Hastings

2026 Honors Symposium

Young adults ages eighteen to twenty-nine make up a large portion of the voting age population but historically participate in elections at lower rates. Although most students take at least one high school civics course, civic education often emphasizes the memorization of governmental facts rather than preparing students with the skills needed for active civic participation. This gap highlights the need to examine how educators can better prepare students for meaningful civic engagement. The purpose of this study is to examine how educators prepare students for civic engagement in Arkansas communities. The study defines practical strategies educators can implement in …

Does It Matter Who Tells The Story? Newspaper Coverage Of Immigration Across Three Latin American Countries, Fernando Severino, Sebastian Rivera Jan 2026

Does It Matter Who Tells The Story? Newspaper Coverage Of Immigration Across Three Latin American Countries, Fernando Severino, Sebastian Rivera

Faculty Publications - Communications

This study examines the news media’s coverage of intraregional immigration issues in three Latin American countries –Colombia, Chile, and Mexico– from 2014 to 2018, when immigration became a salient political issue in these nations. We examine the news coverage by utilizing a novel sample of approximately 20,000 news articles and relying on a Structure Topic Modelling (STM) analysis to detect the most prevalent topics in the news. Our findings reveal that policy issues and stories related to human rights constitute the primary focus of news media coverage on immigration in those countries. We also investigate whether there are differences in …

Faculty Publications - Kinesiology and Recreation

This study explored the perceptions of female graduate assistants who worked in the NCAA division I athletic department regarding the barriers to their career success in the sport industry and their coping mechanisms through the lens of social cognitive career theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 female graduate assistants who were working in the athletic department of an NCAA Division I institution. The participants felt pressured to prove their value at work because of the perceived gender stereotypes against women working in sport and the belief in the glass ceiling for women working in a sport organization. To overcome …

Localized Periodontitis In Young Individuals: Aggregatibacter Jp2 Clone, Immunological Dysfunctions And Other Stories, Luigi Nibali, Meaad M. Alamri, Manuela Maria Viana Miguel, Luciana M. Shaddox

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Grade C molar-incisor pattern periodontitis (C-MIP) is the latest in a series of names given to a unique phenotype, characterized by an aggressive and rapid loss of tooth-supporting structures, starting early in life and usually affecting first molars and incisors. Although much less prevalent than the more generalized “chronic” forms of this disease in adults, it affects mostly young individuals of lower socioeconomic status and African descent, or from mixed-race populations, and shows a strong familial aggregation, pointing to a possible genetic contribution, yet not fully elucidated. Even though most of the studies report this disease in adolescents/young adults, it …

Diamonds Are Forever, As Are Trademarks: Articulating The Twists Of Section 43(A) Trade Dress Protection For Jewelry Designs Through The Facts Of David Yurman V. Mejuri, Daphne Singer

Celebrating WCL Student Authors

Introduction:

Jewelry is adornment--adornment that has “spawned cultural movements, launched political dynasties, and even started wars.”This Article will analyze the application of Section 43(a) of the Lanham Act,which covers trade dress, to jewelry design. Trade dress law is a powerful tool for designers because it regulates the protection of designs rather than words.Despite this strength, trade dress has not been analyzed in the context of the jewelry industry because legal academics have dismissed jewelry as an accessory to fashion law. Luxury jewelry and watches are often used to convey status via “recognizable, distinguished designs that consumers associate with the particular …

Kidfluencer Protection: Illinois’ Attempt At Expanding Its Version Of The Coogan Law., Genevieve Sloan Jan 2026

Kidfluencer Protection: Illinois’ Attempt At Expanding Its Version Of The Coogan Law., Genevieve Sloan

American University Business Law Review

On July 1, 2024, Illinois enacted pioneering legislation, which expanded its child labor laws to “[m]inors featured in vlogs.” This legislation marks the first successful attempt at protecting the finances of children in the business of social media influencing. Over the past several years, society has started recognizing the dangers of the otherwise lucrative child influencer industry, notably children’s lack of legal entitlement to their earnings.

Accordingly, the Illinois legislation began inspiring similar child labor laws in other states. This Comment analyzes whether Section 95 and Section 100 of Illinois’ Child Labor Law of 2024 maintain parental autonomy and adequately …

Outbid By Technicality: How Streaming Services Weaken Legacy Media’S Matching Rights, Arthur Yolles Jan 2026

Outbid By Technicality: How Streaming Services Weaken Legacy Media’S Matching Rights, Arthur Yolles

American University Business Law Review

Contracts for large-scale media distribution, such as those between sports leagues and broadcasting companies, often include matching rights—rights which guarantee a media distributor the ability to continue distributing content for as long as they can match the bids of third parties. These rights grant media distributors security in their relationships with rights-grantors, and they deliver a more predictable viewing experience for consumers. However, it is not always clear what constitutes a "match."

With the rise of streaming and big tech’s infiltration into legacy media strongholds such as live sports, the need to define a match is increasingly relevant. This Comment …

Medical Students for Size Inclusivity (MSSI) is a volunteer-led organization of medical students across the United States challenging weight bias in healthcare and advocating for equitable, weight-inclusive care (https://sizeinclusivemedicine.org). Recently MSSI has developed three “informed consent resources” about intentional weight loss interventions, focusing on glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist medications (such as Ozempic©), bariatric surgery, and pediatric weight management. The three resources are grounded in weight-neutral care and are designed to supplement information from healthcare providers by sharing more nuanced information about the research on the interventions, potential alternatives, and approaches to health that are not focused on body weight. …

Building Adolescent Wellness Through Fitness, Serena Mora Ba Jan 2026

Building Adolescent Wellness Through Fitness, Serena Mora Ba

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Adolescence is a critical period marked by significant growth and change that builds foundations for adulthood, for both neurodivergent (ND) and neurotypical (NT) teens. ND individuals have numerous strengths but also experience challenges such as low self-confidence and high anxiety that impact occupational engagement, health and wellbeing. Occupational therapy (OT) promotes health management, including physical activity (PA) and social emotional health promotion. OT can support skills such as emotional regulation, executive functioning and adaptive approaches, to promote healthy participation in everyday life. Evidence suggests providing PA positively impacts psychosocial wellbeing in NT adolescents. However, ND teens often have limited access …

Big Tech As Transnational Spyware Regulator, Natalie R. Davidson Jan 2026

Big Tech As Transnational Spyware Regulator, Natalie R. Davidson

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Spyware has emerged as a potent tool for leaders to shrink dem- ocratic contestation. In response to calls for constraints on the trade in spyware, states have updated the principal multilateral agree- ment on export controls, civil society groups have employed strate- gic litigation, and the European Union has altered its regulation, in each case with the aim of limiting exports where there is a risk of human rights violations. Yet, scandals involving the Israeli company NSO, among others, have made clear that even the updated regula- tory landscape is inadequate. Many actors are currently debating the reasons for existing …

When The “Public Interest” Violates The First Amendment: Jimmy Kimmel And Fcc Chair Brendan Carr, Joel Timmer

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Following the assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, comments made by late-night ABC host Jimmy Kimmel sparked controversy after some interpreted his remarks as implying conservative responsibility for the crime. The backlash intensified when Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr publicly suggested that Kimmel’s statements were misleading and potentially inconsistent with FCC policy, warning that broadcast stations airing the program should address the matter or risk regulatory consequences, including fines or license revocation. Shortly thereafter, major broadcast groups suspended the program, followed by ABC’s temporary suspension of the show. These events raised serious concerns about whether the FCC Chair’s …

Cloudy Oversight: How Administrative Conflict Over International Airline Alliances’ Antitrust Immunity Harms Consumers Of Commercial Air Transportation., Hamin Jeong

American University Business Law Review

Antitrust law governs and guides how regulatory agencies should scrutinize unfair, monopolistic corporate behavior. However, when several different agencies are tasked with enforcing the same legal principles, different interpretations of such principles inevitably arise.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) acts as the main body that enforces antitrust actions in the domestic airline industry, but there is an exception to the general rule. Congress delegated the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) the authority to grant antitrust immunity to international airline alliances, which form when domestic and foreign airlines partner to increase flight services between their respective nations.

However, as codified …
