Single-Parent Families In Bangkok, Thailand: Factors Affecting Children Living In Single-Parent Families, Waruesporn Jiumpanyarach Jan 2011

Single-Parent Families In Bangkok, Thailand: Factors Affecting Children Living In Single-Parent Families, Waruesporn Jiumpanyarach

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

There has been a transformation in family structure in Thailand due to the changes in economic and social structures over time. Though not recorded in census data the rise in single-parent families can be expected due to a rise in divorce rates, that have been recorded, over the past decades. However, the literature on single-parent families is limited and little is known about the experiences of single-mothers and children of singlemother families in Thailand. This study examines the factors that have major impacts on the well-being of children of single-parent families in Bangkok, Thailand.

A qualitative methodology was employed to …

Rit Gtpase Signaling Mediates Oxidative Stress Resistance And Survival Of Adult Newborn Neurons After Traumatic Brain Injury, Weikang Cai Jan 2011

Rit Gtpase Signaling Mediates Oxidative Stress Resistance And Survival Of Adult Newborn Neurons After Traumatic Brain Injury, Weikang Cai

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

The small GTPases function as molecular switches to control diverse signaling cascades. The mammalian Rit and Rin, along with Drosophila Ric, comprise an evolutionarily conserved subfamily of the Ras-related GTPases. Previous studies using cultured cell models suggested that Rit was involved in the control of cell proliferation, transformation, neuronal differentiation, morphogenesis, and cell survival, but the principal physiological function of Rit remained uncharacterized.

To address this outstanding question, we employed a genetic approach, engineering a Rit knockout mouse. Using this animal model, we demonstrate a central role of Rit in governing cell survival in a p38-dependent fashion. Primary mouse embryonic …

Towards Recognizing And Reconciling The Multiplicity Of Values And Interests In Trademark Law, Michael S. Mireles Jr. Jan 2011

Towards Recognizing And Reconciling The Multiplicity Of Values And Interests In Trademark Law, Michael S. Mireles Jr.

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

In the last seventy years, trademark rights have expanded enormously. Many commentators believe this has led to an unjustified increase in the rights and remedies available to trademark owners. This expansion has been approved and led by trademark owners, Congress, and courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. However, in the last ten years or so, the Supreme Court and Congress have begun attempting to restrain trademark rights, and trademark law is striving to recognize the multiplicity of values implicated by trademark law and reconcile the interests of mark owners and the public generally—particularly users of marks, consumers, and the competitors …

Pornography As Pollution, John Copeland Nagle Jan 2011

Pornography As Pollution, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

Pornography is often compared to pollution. But little effort has been made to consider what it means to describe pornography as a pollution problem, even as many legal scholars have concluded that the law has failed to control internet pornography. Opponents of pornography maintain passionate convictions about how sexually-explicit materials harm both those who are exposed to them and the broader cultural environment. Viewers of pornography may generally hold less fervent beliefs, but champions of free speech and of a free internet object to anti-pornography regulations with strong convictions of their own. The challenge is how to address the widespread …

Negotiated Regulation: The Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board As A Model Regulatory Process, Caroline E. Wellman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Using a comparative framework and based on interviews with the primary actors involved in the debate for and against humane farm animal standards in Ohio, this thesis examines the roles of special and public interest groups, bureaucrats, technocrats, and the public in the rulemaking process of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. This study finds that the creation of the board as a policy solution was likely impossible without the efforts of a policy entrepreneur and a "fixer;" that the board's relevance relies on a problem-setting approach to developing standards that includes a multitude of interests; and that continued public …

Aberrant Dna Replication At An Ectopic Chromosomal Site In Human Cells, Xiaomi Chen

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Aberrant DNA replication, including over-replication or under-replication may lead to life-threatening mutation or even cause human diseases. This thesis focused on three issues related to abnormal DNA replication in human chromosomes including: I) to define the function of DNA unwinding element (DUE) and DNA unwinding element-binding protein (DUE-B) to maintain an active c-myc replicator; II) to determine the role of trans-acting factors in defining a replication origin on human chromosomes; III) to investigate the mechanism by which hairpins affect DNA replication and instability of (CTG)n•(CAG)n trinucleotide repeat tracts in human cells.

Our laboratory previously demonstrated that both DUE and DUE-B, …

In this dissertation a voice user interface (VUI) is presented that improves the ability of a blind user of a mobile reading device to interact with written material. The image processing techniques required …

Hsv-1 Infection In Keratinocyte Cell Lines Treated With Mitotic Inhibitors, Asma A. Abbas Jan 2011

Hsv-1 Infection In Keratinocyte Cell Lines Treated With Mitotic Inhibitors, Asma A. Abbas

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The hypothesis for this research was: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection of murine keratinocyte cell lines (HEL-30 and PAM-212) treated with mitotic inhibitors leads to silencing of virus replication. At 0.1 (Multiplicity of infection) MOI, PAM-212 keratinocytes showed some cell lysis and viral plaques were seen in HEL-30 keratinocyte cultures. PAM-212 keratinocytes, infected at 0.01 MOI, were more susceptible to the lytic effect of HSV-1 than were HEL-30 cells. In this study, 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine (FUDR) treatment of both keratinocyte cell lines permitted an increase survival of HSV-1- infected keratinocytes especially for PAM-212 cell line which was further examined for …

The Kozeny-Carman Equation Considered With A Percolation Threshold, Lee Brenson Porter Ii Jan 2011

The Kozeny-Carman Equation Considered With A Percolation Threshold, Lee Brenson Porter Ii

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A procedure has been developed for calculating permeability (k) from the Kozeny-Carmen equation, a procedure that links ideas from percolation theory with the ideas of Koltermann and Gorelick (1995) and Esselburn et al. (2011). The approach focuses on the proportion of coarser pores that are occupied by finer sediments and defines a threshold proportion. For proportions below this threshold, the unoccupied coarser pores percolate. Following the ideas of Koltermann and Gorelick (1995), the effective grain-size term in the Kozeny-Carman equation is calculated using the geometric mean if below the threshold proportion, and with the harmonic mean if above. Following ideas …

Bio-Functionalized Clay Nanoparticles For Wound Healing Applications, Christopher Anthony Vaiana Jan 2011

Bio-Functionalized Clay Nanoparticles For Wound Healing Applications, Christopher Anthony Vaiana

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Wound healing is a complex, multi-step process that can be summarized into three stages, namely hemostasis and inflammation, proliferation, and finally tissue remodeling. Battlefield wound healing demands rapid hemostasis using clotting or cauterizing agents to immediately limit blood loss, but this occurs at the expense of proper tissue repair beyond hemostasis. Layered silicate clays such as kaolin and montmorillonite (MMT) have been previously shown to induce blood clotting due to their ability to form charged interactions with clotting factors. The charge characteristics of sodium MMT (Na-MMT) also enable functionalization with active biomolecules. Herein we first functionalize three types of alumoinosilicate …

Protein kinase inhibition by staurosporine causes apoptotic volume decrease involving potassium (K) channels in immortalized human B3 lens epithelial cells (LECs). Here, the effect of two pro-apoptotic protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors [12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) and chelerythrine (CET)] were studied on membrane K transport in a fetal human LEC line (FHL124) by western blotting, immunofluorescence, ion flux, ATP, apoptosis, and biotinylation assays. Long term TPA exposure (0-6 h) inhibited 75% of Na-K-2Cl cotransport (NKCC). In contrast, short term (0-20 min) exposure to 50 μM CET reduced Na/K pump and NKCC by >90% and >70%, respectively, without retrieval from the membrane into …

Optimizing Memory Cost With Loop Transformations, Hailong Shi

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Embedded systems are usually constrained in terms of timing, power, and memory. Many embedded applications, especially in the multi-media and telecom domains, are inherently data dominant. These embedded DSP applications usually exhibit intensive computations in the form of multi-level loops. The performance of these embedded DSP applications mainly depends on the code quality of the loops and the memory hierarchy design. During the design phase of the embedded system, it is important to estimate the overall storage requirement to guide the memory system design and take advantage of the memory system by program transformations and loop transformations.

Loop transformations including …

Near Equilibrium Dissolution Of Calcite Using A Flow-Through Reactor (Ftr), Michael Mante Jan 2011

Near Equilibrium Dissolution Of Calcite Using A Flow-Through Reactor (Ftr), Michael Mante

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In mineral dissolution reactions, surface morphologies play important roles particularly in near equilibrium fluids where generation of new sites of reactivity (e.g., pit nuclei) is thermodynamically disfavored. Following CO2 injection in geologic formations, dissolution of primary carbonate minerals and crack-sealing cements will occur. The impact of these reactions on fluid chemistry requires better understanding of the reaction kinetics of major minerals at close-to-equilibrium conditions. Initial investigations have focused on quantifying calcite dissolution using short residence time (~ 10 min) flow through reactors to obtain dissolution rates at 60°C, pH = 8.33 and Pco2 = 3.8 x 10-4 …

A range of substituted 1H-indole-2,3-diones (isatins) was synthesized to assess their capability to inhibit caspases and prevent apoptosis in Jurkat T cells. The key steps in the synthesis of such molecules involved electrophilic substitution of the C-5 position of the isatin nucleus (if necessary), N-alkylation, Wolff-Kishner reduction of the C-3 carbonyl group and finally, Knoevenagel condensation. The design and synthesis of such potential inhibitors was guided by SAR studies of peptide based inhibitors such as "Q-VD-O-Ph", as well as small-molecule inhibitors based upon the isatins scaffold. Previously, 3-(2,6-difluorobenzylidene)-5-nitroindolin-2-one has been shown to inhibit apoptosis in human Jurkat T cells at …

Lithium-ion battery anodes with a nanostructure of randomly dispersed carbon nanofibers (CNFs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and nanoparticles of tin-oxide or silicon were fabricated and tested in order to develop high capacity, easily manufactured anodes. In these anodes, a mesh of CNTs and CNFs form a conductive network within which the nanoparticles of tin-oxide are suspended. The CNT network directs electron flow to and from the nanoparticles while accommodating their volume changes. The CNFs were intended to aid electron transport by serving as conduction channels between the CNTs and the current collector. Secondarily, the CNFs reinforce the physical structure of the …

The hypothesis for this study was: IFN-β expression differs between murine fibroblasts (A2R1 and L929) of different mouse strains upon infection of HSV-1. Fluorescent microscopy was used to examine localization of IFN-β in the different murine fibroblast and keratinocyte cell lines after 6 hours of infection with herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1). Because keratinocytes cell lines HEL-30 and PAM-212 grew in clusters, staining patterns in individual cells could not be determined. A notable difference in localization of IFN-β immune staining was seen between the two cell lines when infected with HSV-1. The A2R1 cell line showed perinuclear (PN) localization, while …
