Islamophobia In America, Diana Mae Cabili Jan 2011

Islamophobia In America, Diana Mae Cabili

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

I started this paper as a result of reading a Time Magazine article entitled Is America Islamophobic? (Ghosh, 2010). The article tried to answer whether America had a Muslim problem focusing on the current discourse regarding mosque building in the US, particularly the controversial Park 51 project in New York City. The Park 51 controversy illustrates .the many misconceptions (addressed later in the paper) about Islam and its adherents that is pervading in American society. It is important that misconceptions are addressed to find potential solutions to the growing Islamophobia in America. Park 51 is a project that plans to …

Delay In Process, Denial Of Justice: The Jurisprudence And Empirics Of Speedy Trials In Comparative Perspective, Jayanth K. Krishnan, C. Raj Kumar Jan 2011

Delay In Process, Denial Of Justice: The Jurisprudence And Empirics Of Speedy Trials In Comparative Perspective, Jayanth K. Krishnan, C. Raj Kumar

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Criminal law scholars regularly maintain that American prisons are overcrowded and that defendants in custody wait long periods of time before having their cases brought to trial. A similar refrain is made of the penal process in India – the world’s largest democracy, an ally of the United States, and a country with a judiciary that has drawn upon American criminal procedure law. In fact, the situation in India is thought to be much worse. Accounts of prisoners languishing behind bars for several years – and sometimes decades – awaiting their day in court are not uncommon. And many Indian …

The Ronald Reagan Paradigm, Taylor Evenson Jan 2011

The Ronald Reagan Paradigm, Taylor Evenson

Whittier Scholars Program

This project is centered on the Ronald Reagan Paradigm, a pervasive ideology that has dominated politics and the U.S. Government for approximately the last 30 years. The pervasive ideology is a neoliberal agenda aimed at increasing the power of corporations within the United States. The ideology is legitimized by Ronald Reagan's Presidency. Furthermore, the ideology is legitimized by think-tanks and few educational institutions. The ideas are disseminated through publications and media outlets. This paper highlights the author’s understanding of this ideology and its creation.

Coherent Phonons In Bismuth Film Observed By Ultrafast Electron Diffraction, A. Bugayev, A. Esmail, M. Abdel-Fattah, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Applied Research Center Publications

The generation of coherent phonons in polycrystalline bismuth film excited with femtosecond laser pulse is observed by ultrafast time-resolved electron diffraction. The dynamics of the diffracted intensities from the (110), (202), and (024) lattice planes show pronounced oscillations at 130-150 GHz. The origin of these coherent acoustic phonons is discussed in view of optical phonon decay into two acoustic phonons. Different drop times in the intensity of the diffraction orders are observed and interpreted as anisotropy in the energy transfer rate of coherent optical phonons.

Taming Lightning In More Than One Bottle: Implementing A Local Next-Generation Catalog Versus A Hosted Web-Scale Discovery Service, Sheila A. Bair, George Boston, Scott Garrison

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

This paper compares implementing the VuFind “nextgeneration catalog” and SerialsSolutions®’ Summon™ “Web-scale discovery service” at an academic library. Different though complementary, and both positively disruptive, these systems each offer easier searching for users through leveraging metadata. The paper discusses aspects of each implementation including purpose, function, architecture and development model, faceted interface, metadata management and interoperability, governance and project management, and differing perceptions and feedback from librarians and users.

A Discussion Into The Careers Of James Houlik And Andy Scott With Regards To Identifying The Vital Steps Needed To Establish A Performance Career As A Specialist Classical Tenor Saxophonist, Erin Royer Jan 2011

A Discussion Into The Careers Of James Houlik And Andy Scott With Regards To Identifying The Vital Steps Needed To Establish A Performance Career As A Specialist Classical Tenor Saxophonist, Erin Royer

Theses : Honours

This paper will discuss the careers of two iconic saxophonists - James Houlik (USA) and Andy Scott (UK) - and how they have established performance careers in the classical tenor saxophone arena. Both of these saxophonists appeared to have contributed immensely to the classical tenor saxophone repertoire and pedagogy - possibly more than any other in their field - as well as enhancing its profile as a specialist instrument. Due to the relatively small number of virtuosic classical performers on the tenor saxophone1, I felt it was important to gain an insight into the important steps that both Houlik and …

Urban Ministry And Social Media: Moving From Billboards To Cafés, Troy Bush

Great Commission Research Journal

A social revolution has occurred in the last ten years. Social media has forever changed the way we communicate and develop community. At the same time, the urban age has dawned, and the convergence of these two global events creates unprecedented opportunities for urban ministry. This article examines the rise of cell phone texting, Facebook, and Twitter, including city rankings based on the use of social media. It concludes with recommendations for ways urban churches, ministries, and missions can maximize their use of social media.

Low Pressure Drip/Micro System Design – Analysis Of Potential Rebate, Charles M. Burt, Daniel J. Howes Jan 2011

Low Pressure Drip/Micro System Design – Analysis Of Potential Rebate, Charles M. Burt, Daniel J. Howes

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Drip/micro irrigation systems are often referred to as “low pressure” systems because the required emitter pressures are relatively low (6-12 psi). However, the pump discharge pressures of systems on flat ground throughout California average 40 psi. This report examines readily attainable system losses by examining individual components of the drip/micro system.

Ensuring Public Trust At The Municipal Level: Inspectors General Enter The Mix, Patricia E. Salkin, Zachary Kansler

Scholarly Works

Although federal, state and local government officials are subject to applicable codes of ethical conduct and are under the jurisdiction of ethics enforcement agencies created pursuant to these laws, ethics oversight agencies are limited in the breadth and scope of covered activities. With an increase in reported allegations of corruption, particularly at the local government level, this article explores the addition of the audit function, through inspectors general, to ensure greater transparency and accountability of public officials.

The article begins with a very brief historical overview of the emergence of the inspector general concept in Europe and its adoption in …
