This case addresses the challenges of sport managers to make fair and ethical decisions while considering the many potential organizational outcomes of their decisions. The case is based on a real situation that occurred within a NCAA Division III athletics setting. It highlights the decision making process of a director of athletics who must respond to the untimely arrests of the university’s star quarterback and an assistant coach. The case provides an opportunity for students to critically examine the following: 1) how a sport organization’s policies and philosophical position impact decision making, and 2) the relationship between sport and education. …

Toward A New Service Model, Jim Alderman Jan 2011

Toward A New Service Model, Jim Alderman

Library Commons Project

The Thomas G. Carpenter Library works with a model of Reference service that is fairly traditional in most senses. The Reference Desk is staffed with a combination of professional librarians and para-professionals a set number of hours per week. When the current library facility was planned, the emphasis was on making more and more computers available to library patrons and to place staff near the computers in order to facilitate service provision. That resulted in a large lab of 129 workstations with a student assistant desk nearby and a smaller lab of 40 workstations with the reference/documents service desk nearby. …

Car-Ving Out Notions Of Privacy: The Impact Of Gps Tracking And Why Maynard Is A Move In The Right Direction, Justin P. Webb Jan 2011

Car-Ving Out Notions Of Privacy: The Impact Of Gps Tracking And Why Maynard Is A Move In The Right Direction, Justin P. Webb

Marquette Law Review

In a controversial decision in 2010, the D.C. Circuit held that warrantless GPS tracking of an automobile for an extended period of time violates the Fourth Amendment. The D.C. Circuit approached the issue in a novel way, using “mosaic theory” to assert that the aggregation of information about an individual’s movements, over an extended period of time, violated an individual’s reasonable expectation of privacy. This Note discusses how state and federal courts have dealt with warrantless GPS tracking, and ultimately asserts that the Maynard court’s decision was correct, insofar as it takes account of the interaction of changing technology and …

The Relationship Between Organizational Trust And Mindfulness: An Exploration Of Ncaa Division Iii Athletic Departments, Jacob K. Tingle Jan 2011

The Relationship Between Organizational Trust And Mindfulness: An Exploration Of Ncaa Division Iii Athletic Departments, Jacob K. Tingle

School of Business Faculty Research

The drive to have a successful college athletic program is an acknowledgement of marketplace realities; universities are competing for ever scarcer resources. As a result, the desire to be better than has led some department personnel and student-athletes to commit unethical, even illegal acts. Recent examples call into question the credibility of college sports. Therefore, understanding organizational dynamics associated with trust and decision-making in athletic departments is important. This study explored the relationship between organizational trust and mindfulness operating in NCAA D-III (non-scholarship) athletic departments.

After a pilot study confirmed reliability and validity of instruments designed for this study, data …

Electrochemical capacitors have been an important development in recent years in the field of energy storage. Capacitors can be developed by utilizing either double layer capacitance at the electrode/solution interfaces alone or in combination with a battery electrode associated with a faradic redox process in one electrode. An asymmetric capacitor consisting of electrochemically deposited nickel hydroxide, supported on carbon foam as a positive electrode and carbon sheet as a negative electrode has been successfully assembled and cycled. One objective of this study has been to demonstrate the viability of the nickel carbon foam positive electrode, especially in terms of cycle …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Hypertension is the most prevalent form of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the world, and is known to increase the risk for developing other diseases. Recently, the American Heart Association introduced a new classification of blood pressure, prehypertension (PHT). The criteria for PHT include a systolic of 120-139 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure of 80-89 mmHg. It has been observed that individuals with PHT have a higher risk of developing hypertension later in life. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanisms contributing to PHT in order to possibly prevent hypertension. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils have been …

Nanomechanics Of Cellulose Crystals And Cellulose-Based Polymer Composites, Anahita Pakzad

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Cellulose-polymer composites have potential applications in aerospace and transportation areas where lightweight materials with high mechanical properties are needed. In addition, these economical and biodegradable composites have been shown to be useful as polymer electrolytes, packaging structures, optoelectronic devices, and medical implants such as wound dressing and bone scaffolds.

In spite of the above mentioned advantages and potential applications, due to the difficulties associated with synthesis and processing techniques, application of cellulose crystals (micro and nano sized) for preparation of new composite systems is limited. Cellulose is hydrophilic and polar as opposed to most of common thermoplastics, which are non-polar. …

State standardized testing has always been a tool to measure a school’s performance and to help evaluate school curriculum. However, with the school of choice legislation in 1992, the MEAP test became a measuring stick to grade schools by and a major tool in attracting school of choice students. Now, declining enrollment and a state budget struggling to stay out of the red have made school of choice students more important than ever before. MEAP scores have become the deciding factor in some cases.

For the past five years, the Hancock Middle School staff has been working hard to improve …

Imaging Skeletal Muscle Using Second Harmonic Generation And Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering Microscopy, Christian P. Pfeffer, Bjorn R. Olsen, Feruz Ganikhanov, Francois Legare

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We describe experimental results on label free imaging of striated skeletal muscle using second harmonic generation (SHG) and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. The complementarity of the SHG and CARS data makes it possible to clearly identify the main sarcomere sub-structures such as actin, myosin, acto-myosin, and the intact T-tubular system as it emanates from the sarcolemma. Owing to sub-micron spatial resolution and the high sensitivity of the CARS microscopy technique we were able to resolve individual myofibrils. In addition, key organelles such as mitochondria, cell nuclei and their structural constituents were observed revealing the entire structure of the …
