A Case Study Of How Students Enrolled In Cte Programs And Faculty Understand And Assess The Implications Of Globalization On Career Preparation, Mohammad A. Moradi

Globalization reflects a shift in the workforce development paradigm. This descriptive qualitative case study was conducted at a Midwestern university with 12 student participants and three faculty members from three engineering programs. The purpose of this body of work was to explore the participants‘ perceptions of globalization, and to understand the implications of globalization on career and technical education (CTE) programs, program selection, and career choices, the training of the students enrolled in CTE programs, and the role of teaching faculty and the college in this process.

How CTE programs aligned many diverse programs to meet a growing demand for …

Rosie The Riveter Vs. Helen The Homemaker : Advertising And The Role Of Women In America After World War Ii, Christina Pfaff

Honors Theses

At the outbreak of World War II millions of servicemen left the United States to fight overseas, creating a great demand for workers in the production industries. Although the government identified women as the ideal source to fill the labor gap, a harsh stigma against the female worker existed from the Depression era. The United States government launched a recruitment campaign in collaboration with major advertising agencies and well-known artists in an effort to overcome this stigma and persuade women to join the industrial workforce. This recruitment campaign centered on the image of "Rosie the Riveter." This paper discusses the …

Appellate Judges And Philosophical Theories: Judicial Philosophy Or Mere Coincidence, Gerald R. Ferrer, Mystica Alexander Jan 2011

Appellate Judges And Philosophical Theories: Judicial Philosophy Or Mere Coincidence, Gerald R. Ferrer, Mystica Alexander

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

This paper suggests that judicial opinions often reflect ajudge's position on what is ethical and useful in the real world of constitutional values. It further suggests that an appreciation of legal philosophical theory assists one in understanding the ethical and public policy dimensions of a court's opinion. Do judges' opinions parallel philosophical theories constructed by philosophers or is any apparent relationship mere coincidence? This paper suggests the former-that a judge's belief system, education, and experiences 2 include the adoption of judicial philosophies, the expression of which can be found in his or her written opinions.

Physical Activity Promotion Among School-Aged Children Using Pedometers And Rewards, Kari E. Ek Jan 2011

Physical Activity Promotion Among School-Aged Children Using Pedometers And Rewards, Kari E. Ek

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Physical activity is important for children as many children are considered overweight or obese. The benefits of exercise have been demonstrated in empirical studies across all age ranges (Horne, Hardman, Lowe, & Rowlands, 2009; Kelly et al., 2004; Louie & Chan, 2003; Southard & Southard, 2006). In the current study, a multiple baseline design across participants was used to assess the effectiveness of goal setting, reinforcement contingencies, and pedometers that provide feedback to increase step count of 5 participants. During baseline each participant wore a sealed pedometer to assess the average steps the participants took per day. After baseline, each …

Tort Reform And American Political Economy, Ian J. Drake Jan 2011

Tort Reform And American Political Economy, Ian J. Drake

Department of Political Science and Law Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The expansion of tort liability throughout the last century was a unique period of American legal history. In the field of products liability the expansion was dramatic; so much that it can be considered revolutionary. Also, the reaction to this expansion was so forceful that it thwarted the larger goals of the expansionary movement. This paper will review the purposes of the expansion of tort law in the twentieth century and the purposes and effects of the reaction it spurred at the state level. In short, it is my conclusion that the expansion of products liability after World War II--the …

Effect Of School Racial Composition On Trajectories Of Depressive Symptoms From Adolescence Through Early Adulthood, Katrina M. Walsemann, Bethany A. Bell, Bridget J. Goosby

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

We investigate the effect of high school racial composition, measured as percent of non-Hispanic white students, on trajectories of depressive symptoms from adolescence to early adulthood. We also explore whether the effect of school racial composition varies by respondent race/ethnicity and whether adult socioeconomic status mediates this relationship. We analyzed four waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health using 3-level linear growth models. We restricted our sample to respondents enrolled in grades 9-12 in 1994/5 who were interviewed at a minimum in Waves I and IV. This resulted in 10,350 respondents enrolled in 80 high schools …

Watching The Detectives: Crime Programming, Fear Of Crime, And Attitudes About The Criminal Justice System, Lisa A. Kort-Butler, Kelley J. Sittner Hartshorn

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Research demonstrates a complex relationship between television viewing and fear of crime. Social critics assert that media depictions perpetuate the dominant cultural ideology about crime and criminal justice. This article examines whether program type differentially affects fear of crime and perceptions of the crime rate. Next, it tests whether such programming differentially affects viewers’ attitudes about the criminal justice system, and if these relationships are mediated by fear. Results indicated that fear mediated the relationship between viewing nonfictional shows and lack of support for the justice system. Viewing crime dramas predicted support for the death penalty, but this relationship was …

Information Systems Skills Differences Between High-Wage And Low-Wage Regions: Implications For Global Sourcing, Kate Kaiser Jan 2011

Information Systems Skills Differences Between High-Wage And Low-Wage Regions: Implications For Global Sourcing, Kate Kaiser

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Developing Information Systems (IS) skills for a company’s workforce has always been challenging, but global sourcing growth has caused the determination of needed IS skills to be more complex. The increased use of outsourcing to an IS service provider and from high-wage regions to low-wage regions has affected what IS skills are required globally and how to distribute the workforce to meet these needs. To understand what skills are needed in locations that seek and those that provide outsourcing, we surveyed IS service provider managers in global locations. Results from 126 reporting units provide empirical evidence that provider units in …

Arterial Tissue Perforation Using Ultrasonically Vibrating Wire Waveguides, Mark Wylie Jan 2011

Arterial Tissue Perforation Using Ultrasonically Vibrating Wire Waveguides, Mark Wylie

Doctoral

Chronic Total Occlusions (CTOs) are fibrous and calcified atherosclerotic lesions which completely occlude the artery. They are difficult to treat with standard dilation procedures as they cannot be traversed easily. Their treatment is also associated with a high risk of arterial perforation. Low frequency ultrasonic vibrations delivered via wire waveguides represent a minimally invasive treatment for CTOs and other tissue ablation applications. These devices typically operate at 20–50 kHz delivering wire waveguide distal tip amplitudes of vibration of 0-60 μm. The diseased tissue is ablated or disrupted by repetitive direct mechanical contact and cavitation. This research assesses the susceptibility of …
