Development Of A Short Range Tracking System Using An Inertial Measurement Unit, James Casey Shackelford Dec 2011

Development Of A Short Range Tracking System Using An Inertial Measurement Unit, James Casey Shackelford

Theses and Dissertations

Inertial measurement units, or IMUs, serve as effective tracking devices when used in sophisticated aerospace control and navigational systems. This tracking potential, coupled with ever advancing technology that permits IMUs to become smaller and more compact, is allowing IMUs to gain popularity in a many areas of research beyond the areas of aerospace. Using an IMU based on microelectromechanical (MEMS) technology, this document investigates an IMU’s ability to track complex, short range motions such as golf swings. To prepare the IMU, an accurate, yet quick, calibration procedure is proposed and illustrated to show the tools and equipment necessary for this …

The 3d Dynamics Of The Cosserat Rod As Applied To Continuum Robotics, Charles Rees Jones Dec 2011

The 3d Dynamics Of The Cosserat Rod As Applied To Continuum Robotics, Charles Rees Jones

Theses and Dissertations

In the effort to simulate the biologically inspired continuum robot’s dynamic capabilities, researchers have been faced with the daunting task of simulating—in real-time—the complete three dimensional dynamics of the the “beam-like” structure which includes the three “stiff” degrees-ofreedom transverse and dilational shear. Therefore, researchers have traditionally limited the difficulty of the problem with simplifying assumptions. This study, however, puts forward a solution which makes no simplifying assumptions and trades off only the real-time requirement of the desired solution. The solution is a Finite Difference Time Domain method employing an explicit single step method with cheap right hands sides. The cheap …

Exploring Math Anxiety As It Relates To Math Achievement, Gender, And Race, Wanda Denise Pittman Merritt Dec 2011

Exploring Math Anxiety As It Relates To Math Achievement, Gender, And Race, Wanda Denise Pittman Merritt

Theses and Dissertations

Students’ mathematic achievement has not met national, state, or local expectations for decades. The No Child Left Behind Act mandated that by school year 2013-2014, all students in public schools across the nation are to perform at the proficient level or higher in math. The specific problem addressed in the present study was low measures of students’ math achievement in one Mississippi school district. Prior research suggested that math anxiety was a major factor that influenced students’ math performances. Hypothesis 1 for this study stated there is a statistically significant negative relationship between seventh grade students’ math anxiety scores and …

A Case Study Of The State Takeover Of The Sunflower County School District, Paula Allen Vanderford Dec 2011

A Case Study Of The State Takeover Of The Sunflower County School District, Paula Allen Vanderford

Theses and Dissertations

The performance of the nation‟s public schools continues to be a concern of policymakers, educators, and parents. Stakeholders cite the lack of academic achievement, disruptive student behavior, and failure to provide students with a safe and orderly school environment as evidence of being unsuccessful. To ensure school districts, schools, administrators, teachers, and students meet acceptable performance standards, states are implementing a variety of accountability policies. Two of the more controversial accountability approaches are state takeovers of local school districts and the reconstitution of schools. At least 29 states have enacted policies that allow the takeover of a school district. Changes …

Should Distribution Systems Engineering Be Taught At The Undergraduate Level?, Badrul Chowdhury, Anil Pahwa Dec 2011

Should Distribution Systems Engineering Be Taught At The Undergraduate Level?, Badrul Chowdhury, Anil Pahwa

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although there are some exceptions, a distribution systems course is not part of a typical undergraduate curriculum. the course is usually taught at the graduate level. Teaching a distribution systems course requires the student to have a background in balanced three-phase power system modeling such as that obtained from a first power systems analysis course. the requirement to add breadth to an undergraduate curriculum often precludes the notion of depth in any one area unless a student takes the depth courses as technical or free electives. an argument could be made that a distribution systems course does not contain much …

Structures, Energetics And Vibrational Frequency Shifts Of Hydrated Pyrimidine, J. Coleman Howard, Nathan I. Hammer, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

More than 70 unique micro-hydrated structures of pyrimidine, ranging in size from 1 to 7 water molecules, have been characterized with the B3LYP density functional and the 6-311++G(2df,2pd) triple-ζ split-valence basis set. Explicitly correlated MP2-F12 single-point computations were performed on each structure with a correlation consistent triple-ζ basis set to estimate the relative and dissociation energies at the MP2 complete basis set (CBS) limit. Many of these new structures have significantly lower energies than those previously reported (by as much as 12.66 kcal mol-1). For clusters with 1 and 2 water molecules, the MP2-F12 relative and dissociation energies are virtually …

A Case Study Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Some Diagnostic Considerations, Jeanette M. Stumbo Zaimes, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) was considered a rare disorder prior to 1984 when the initial results from the Epidemiologic Catchment Area survey demonstrated a substantial prevalence of the disorder (1). Thus there may be many patients today who entered treatment prior to 1984 with undiagnosed OCD. This paper gives the history of one such patient and reviews the current literature on OCD as it pertains to the diagnostic evidence in this case.

Positron Emission Tomography In Psychiatry: New Sights, New Insights, Shitij Kapur, Md, Sylvain Houle, Md, Phd, Frcp (C), Gregory M. Brown, Md, Phd, Frcp (C)

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a new tool with which to explore the neurobiological basis of psychiatric illness. PET permits in-vivo measurement of regional cerebral blood flow, regional glucose metabolism, as well as information about neurochemicals and their receptors. Since regional cerebral bloodflow and glucose metabolism reflect ongoing neuronal activity, the neural bases of different cognitive processes and emotional states can be discerned using PET. Findings from recent studies in schizophrenia, affective disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders, and dementia are reviewed with a special emphasis on how these findings may' be useful in developing a more comprehensive framework for understanding …

A New Mass Spectrometer For Upper Atmospheric Measurements In The Auroral Region, Addison E. Everett, James S. Dyer, Mike Watson, Wayne Sanderson, Scott Schicker, Dalon Work, Christopher J. Mertens, Scott M. Bailey, Erik A. Syrstad Dec 2011

A New Mass Spectrometer For Upper Atmospheric Measurements In The Auroral Region, Addison E. Everett, James S. Dyer, Mike Watson, Wayne Sanderson, Scott Schicker, Dalon Work, Christopher J. Mertens, Scott M. Bailey, Erik A. Syrstad

Graduate Student Posters

We have previously presented a new rocket-borne time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) for measurements in the mesosphere / lower thermosphere (MLT). Traditionally, mass spectrometry in the MLT has been difficult, mainly due to the elevated ambient pressures of the MLT and high speeds of a sounding rocket flight, which affect the direct sampling of the ambient atmosphere and spatial resolution. The TOF-MS is a versatile, inherently adaptable, axial-sampling instrument, capable of operating in a traditional TOF mode or in a multiplexing Hadamard-transform mode where high spatial resolution is desired. To minimize bow shock effects at low altitudes (~70-110km), the ram surface …

The Role Of Attached And Free-Living Bacteria In Biodegradation In Karst Aquifers, Roger Painter, Tom Byl, Lonnie Sharpe, Ahmad Kheder, Justin Harris Dec 2011

The Role Of Attached And Free-Living Bacteria In Biodegradation In Karst Aquifers, Roger Painter, Tom Byl, Lonnie Sharpe, Ahmad Kheder, Justin Harris

Civil and Architectural Engineering Faculty Research

Natural attenuation of groundwater contamination occurs at some level for all aquifers impacted with organic contaminants. The issues regarding natural attenuation are whether it takes place at a sufficient rate to be protective of human health and the environment. Implementation of a Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) remedial alternative for groundwater requires parties responsible for the contamination to demonstrate to regulators and the public that MNA is protective at a given site. Analysis of MNA for remediation of karst aquifers is hampered by a lack of understanding of biodegradation in karst environments. The lack of studies examining biodegradation in karst aquifers …

A Comparative Study Of Parental Involvement And Its Effect On African-American Male And Overall Student Achievement At Single Gender And Coeducational Middle Schools, Michael Wayne Nellums

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if Parental Involvement influenced academic performance at single gender and co-educational schools. This study also compared African American male academic achievement with all students enrolled in two single gender, and one coeducational, middle school programs. Although all three schools reflected a high poverty student population, the coeducational school boasted a district funded talented and gifted program that has been in existence for almost two decades. The single gender school had no such offering. The coeducational school also had a more experienced teaching staff, with more teachers holding advanced degrees. The study examined …
