Monotonic Properties Of The Least Squares Mean, Jimmie Lawson, Yongdo Lim Oct 2011

Monotonic Properties Of The Least Squares Mean, Jimmie Lawson, Yongdo Lim

Faculty Publications

We settle an open problem of several years standing by showing that the least squares mean for positive definite matrices is monotone for the usual (Loewner) order. Indeed we show this is a special case of its appropriate generalization to partially ordered complete metric spaces of nonpositive curvature. Our techniques extend to establish other basic properties of the least squares mean such as continuity and joint concavity. Moreover, we introduce a weighted least squares mean and derive our results in this more general setting. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Critical Points And Resonance Of Hyperplane Arrangements, D. Cohen, G. Denham, M. Falk, A. Varchenko Oct 2011

Critical Points And Resonance Of Hyperplane Arrangements, D. Cohen, G. Denham, M. Falk, A. Varchenko

Faculty Publications

If Φλ is a master function corresponding to a hyperplane arrangement A and a collection of weights λ, we investigate the relationship between the critical set of Φλ, the variety defined by the vanishing of the one-form ωλ = d log and Φλ, the resonance of λ. For arrangements satisfying certain conditions, we show that if λ is resonant in dimension p, then the critical set of Φλ has codimension at most p. These include all free arrangements and all rank 3 arrangements. © Canadian Mathematical Society 2011.

Rock-Paper-Scissors: Nifty Tools And Assignments, James Huggins

Computer Science Presentations And Conference Materials

In the childhood game of "rock-paper-scissors", two participants select one of three different gestures. The selected gestures are then compared using the following rule set: rock crushes scissors, scissors cuts paper, and paper covers rock. Ties are broken by repeating the game as needed. The game can be played until the first winner is determined, or in repeated rounds (e.g. best two out of three)...

Optimal Service-Based Competition With Heterogeneous Suppliers, Ehsan Elahi, Saif Benjaafar, Karen L. Donohue Oct 2011

Optimal Service-Based Competition With Heterogeneous Suppliers, Ehsan Elahi, Saif Benjaafar, Karen L. Donohue

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

We investigate how a competition can be designed to maximize expected profit for a buyer who wishes to allocate demand among a diverse set of suppliers when his profit is dependent on the supplier’s service levels. The candidate suppliers are heterogeneous in their capacities and cost structures, and compete for shares of the buyer’s demand based on their promised service levels. To characterize the optimal competition, we first identify a family of allocation functions that are service maximizing, meaning they can intensify the competition to a point where each supplier provides its maximum feasible service level and the outcome of …

Infinitary Equivalence Of Zp- Modules With Nice Decomposition Bases, Rüdiger Göbel, Katrin Leistner, Peter Loth, Lutz Strüngmann Oct 2011

Infinitary Equivalence Of Zp- Modules With Nice Decomposition Bases, Rüdiger Göbel, Katrin Leistner, Peter Loth, Lutz Strüngmann

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Warfield modules are direct summands of simply presented Zp - modules, or, alternatively, are Zp - modules possessing a nice decomposition basis with simply presented cokernel. They have been classified up to isomorphism by theor Ilm-Kaplansky and Warfield invariants. Taking a model theoretic point of view and using infinitary languages we give here a complete theoretic characterization of a large class of Zp - modules having a nice decomposition basis. As a corollary, we obtain the classical classification of countable Warfield modules. This generalizes results by Barwise and Eklof.

Teaching Supply Chain Coordination Within A Network Modeling Context, Stephen E. Hill Oct 2011

Teaching Supply Chain Coordination Within A Network Modeling Context, Stephen E. Hill

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

"This article describes an educational exercise that demonstrates the value of coordination within a supply chain environment while exposing students to the conflict between locally and globally optimal supply chain decisions. This exercise allows students to formulate, model, and solve a problem relating to the design of a small supply chain network. The exercise begins with student teams developing a solution that is optimal from each team’s local perspective. A solution that is globally optimal is then developed. As is often the case in a real-world supply chain, the solutions that are optimal for each team do not (when combined) …

New Orleans Business Recovery In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Katrina, James P. Lesage, R. Kelley Pace, Nina Lam, Richard Campanella, Xingjian Liu Oct 2011

New Orleans Business Recovery In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Katrina, James P. Lesage, R. Kelley Pace, Nina Lam, Richard Campanella, Xingjian Liu

Faculty Publications

We analyse decisions to reopen in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina made by business establishments on major business thoroughfares in New Orleans by using a spatial probit methodology. Our approach allows for interdependence between decisions to reopen by one establishment and those of its neighbours. There is a large literature on the role that is played by spatial dependence in firm location decisions, and we find evidence of strong dependence in decisions by firms to reopen in the aftermath of a natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina. This interdependence has important statistical implications for how we analyse business recovery after …

Consequences Of Neutrino Lorentz Violation For Leptonic Meson Decays, Brett David Altschul Oct 2011

Consequences Of Neutrino Lorentz Violation For Leptonic Meson Decays, Brett David Altschul

Faculty Publications

If the observation by OPERA of apparently superluminal neutrinos is correct, the Lagrangian for second-generation leptons must break Lorentz invariance. We calculate the effects of an energy-independent change in the neutrino speed on another observable, the charged pion decay rate. The rate decreases by an factor [1 - 3/(1 - (m_mu)^2 / (m_pi) ^ 2) (< v_(nu) > - 1)], where < v_(nu) > is the (directionally averaged) neutrino speed in the pion's rest frame. This provides a completely independent experimental observable that is sensitive to the same forms of Lorentz violation as a neutrino time of flight measurement.

Secondary Students, Laptops And Game Design: Examining The Potential Of Homemade Powerpoint Games In A Blended Learning Environment, Michael Barbour, Jim Kinsella, Lloyd P. Rieber Oct 2011

Secondary Students, Laptops And Game Design: Examining The Potential Of Homemade Powerpoint Games In A Blended Learning Environment, Michael Barbour, Jim Kinsella, Lloyd P. Rieber

Education Faculty Publications

The integration of technology into K-12 classrooms has long been hampered by the problem of scalability. Familiar software programs, such as MS PowerPoint, can be used as a tool for students to create educational games to deepen their understanding of content. In this article, the authors examine students in two secondary social studies classes that created homemade PowerPoint games as a way to review for their mid-term and final examinations. The authors compared student performance on these exams based upon the topics covered by their game design. While no significant differences in student outcomes were found, qualitative analyses indicate that …

Exploring Agent-Based Simulations In Political Science Using Aggregate Temporal Graphs, R. Jordan Crouser, Jeremy G. Freeman, Remco Chang Oct 2011

Exploring Agent-Based Simulations In Political Science Using Aggregate Temporal Graphs, R. Jordan Crouser, Jeremy G. Freeman, Remco Chang

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Agent-based simulation has become a key technique for modeling and simulating dynamic, complicated behaviors in social and behavioral sciences. Lacking the appropriate tools and support, it is difficult for social scientists to thoroughly analyze the results of these simulations. In this work, we capture the complex relationships between discrete simulation states by visualizing the data as a temporal graph. In collaboration with expert analysts, we identify two graph structures which capture important relationships between pivotal states in the simulation and their inevitable outcomes. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of these structures in the interactive analysis of a large-scale social science …

Association Mining In Database Machine, Jindou Jiao Oct 2011

Association Mining In Database Machine, Jindou Jiao

Master's Projects

Association rule is wildly used in most of the data mining technologies. Apriori algorithm is the fundamental association rule mining algorithm. FP-growth tree algorithm improves the performance by reduce the generation of the frequent item sets. Simplex algorithm is a advanced FP-growth algorithm by using bitmap structure with the simplex concept in geometry. The bitmap structure implementation is particular designed for storing the data in database machines to support parallel computing the association rule mining.

Discovering Knowledge Structure In The Web, Siddharth Ramu Oct 2011

Discovering Knowledge Structure In The Web, Siddharth Ramu

Master's Projects

Association Rule Mining is a widely used method for finding interesting relationships from large data sets. The challenge here is how to swiftly and accurately discover association rules from large data sets. To achieve this, this paper will (1) build a data warehouse system that simulates the secondary storage and represents a database by bit patterns, and (2) implement a new geometric algorithm to find association rules, called Maximal Simplex Algorithm. The data warehouse consists of very long bit columns. Each column is an item or an attribute value pair and a row represents a transaction or a tuple in …

Actibot: A Botnet To Evade Active Detection, Xinjun Zhang Oct 2011

Actibot: A Botnet To Evade Active Detection, Xinjun Zhang

Master's Projects

In recent years, botnets have emerged as a serious threat on the Internet. Botnets are commonly used for exploits such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, identity theft, spam, and click fraud. The immense size of botnets, some consisting of hundreds of thousands of compromised computers, increases the speed and severity of attacks. Unlike passive behavior anomaly detection techniques, active botnet detection aims to collect evidence actively, in order to reduce detection time and increase accuracy. In this project, we develop and analyze a botnet that we call ActiBot, which can evade some types of active detection mechanisms. Future …

Graph Technique For Metamorphic Virus Detection, Neha Runwal Oct 2011

Graph Technique For Metamorphic Virus Detection, Neha Runwal

Master's Projects

Current anti-virus techniques include signature based detection, anomaly based detection, and machine learning based virus detection. Signature detection is the most widely used approach. Metamorphic malware changes its internal structure with each infection. Metamorphism provides one of the strong known methods for evading malware detection. In this project, we consider metamorphic virus detection based on a directed graph obtained from executable files. We compare our detection results with a previously developed and highly successful technique based on hidden Markov models.
