The Method Of Fundemental Solutions For The Multi-Dimensional Wave Equations, Meng-Huang Gu, Chia-Ming Fan, Der-Liang Young
The Method Of Fundemental Solutions For The Multi-Dimensional Wave Equations, Meng-Huang Gu, Chia-Ming Fan, Der-Liang Young
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, a meshless method is developed for solving multi-dimensional wave equations. The proposed method is based on the method of particular solution (MPS), the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) and the Houbolt finite difference (FD) method. The wave equation is considered as a Poisson-type equation with the time-dependent source term. The Houbolt method is applied to avoid the difficult problems for dealing with the initial conditions in forming the linear algebra system. The works of space discretization are dependent on the method of particular solution and the method of fundamental solutions. There are three numerical examples considered in …
Scramjet Isolator Modeling And Control, John R. Hutzel
Scramjet Isolator Modeling And Control, John R. Hutzel
Theses and Dissertations
The scramjet isolator is a duct in which pressure increases from the inlet to the combustor via a shock train. The shock train leading edge (LE) location must be controlled in an operational scramjet. A LE location measurement algorithm, dynamic model, and control algorithm were developed and validated with 500 frame per second (FPS) shadowgraph images in this research. The test apparatus consisted of a direct connect cold-flow high-speed wind tunnel with an adjustable ramp mounted in the tunnel floor. Ramp adjustments changed the tunnel cross-sectional area which changed the tunnel back pressure and LE location. Wall-mounted pressure transducers and …

Towards Node Cooperation In Mobile Opportunistic Networks, Abderrahmen Mtibaa, Khaled Harras
Towards Node Cooperation In Mobile Opportunistic Networks, Abderrahmen Mtibaa, Khaled Harras
Computer Science Faculty Works
Mobile devices such as smart-phones and tablets are becoming ubiquitous, with ever increasing communication capabilities. In situations where the necessary infrastructure is unavailable, costly, or overloaded, opportunistically connecting theses devices becomes a challenging area of research. Data is disseminated using nodes that store-carry-and-forward messages across the network. In such networks, node cooperation is fundamental for the message delivery process. Therefore, the lack of node cooperation (e.g., a node may refuse to act as a relay and settle for sending and receiving its own data) causes considerable degradation in the network. In order to ensure node cooperation in such networks, we …
Elementary Teachers’ Mental Models Of Engineering Design Processes: A Comparison Of Two Communities Of Practice, Ann Piening Mcmahon
Elementary Teachers’ Mental Models Of Engineering Design Processes: A Comparison Of Two Communities Of Practice, Ann Piening Mcmahon
Dissertations
Educating K-12 students in the processes of design engineering is gaining popularity in public schools. Several states have adopted standards for engineering design despite the fact that no common agreement exists on what should be included in the K-12 engineering design process. Furthermore, little pre-service and in-service professional development exists that will prepare teachers to teach a design process that is fundamentally different from the science teaching process found in typical public schools. This study provides a glimpse into what teachers think happens in engineering design compared to articulated best practices in engineering design.

Development Of A Strontium-87 Ion Interferometer, Christopher Joseph Erickson
Theses and Dissertations
I present the construction of a low-velocity intense source (LVIS) of laser-cooled neutral strontium using permanent ring magnets. The LVIS consists of a magneto-optical trap from which cold strontium is extracted in a well-collimated beam. I also present the development and implementation of a full suite of low-noise, high-bandwidth laser control electronics including a microcontroller unit. This microcontroller remotely controls and monitors the current driver, temperature controller, and PID lock circuit for each diode laser simultaneously. The current driver output is accurate to within 2 micro-amps and repeatable to with a few nano-amps. The noise spectral density of the current …

Relating Dynamic Protein Interactions Of Metallochaperones With Metal Transfer At The Single-Molecule Level, J. J. Benítez, A. M. Keller, D. L. Huffman, Liliya A. Yatsunyk, A. C. Rosenzweig, P. Chen
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
Metallochaperones undertake specific interactions with their target proteins to deliver metal ions inside cells. Understanding how these protein interactions are coupled with the underlying metal transfer process is important, but challenging because they are weak and dynamic. Here we use a nanovesicle trapping scheme to enable single-molecule FRET measurements of the weak, dynamic interactions between the copper chaperone Hahl and the fourth metal binding domain (MBD4) of WDP. By monitoring the behaviors of single interacting pairs, we visualize their interactions in real time in both the absence and the presence of various equivalents of Cu(1+). Regardless of the proteins' metallation …

A Horizontal Edges Bound For The Independence Number Of A Graph, Michelle Grigsby
A Horizontal Edges Bound For The Independence Number Of A Graph, Michelle Grigsby
Theses and Dissertations
The independence number alpha of a graph is the size of a maximum independent set of vertices. An independent set is a set of vertices where every pair of vertices in non-adjacent. This number is known to be hard to compute. The bound we worked with is defined as epsilon = max[e(v)-eh(v)] over all the vertices in the vertex set, V(G). e(v) is the number of vertices at even distance from v. eh(v) is the number of edges both of whose endpoints are at even distance from v. Epsilon can be calculated in polynomial time. Siemion Fajtlowicz proved that alpha …
Investigating Block Mask Lithography Variation Using Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation, Daiji Kawamura
Investigating Block Mask Lithography Variation Using Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation, Daiji Kawamura
Theses
Simulation work has long been realized as a method for analyzing semiconductor processing expediently and cost-effectively. As technology advancements strive to meet increasingly stringent parameter constraints, difficult issues arise. In this paper, challenges in block mask lithography will be discussed with the aid of using simulation packages developed by Panoramic Technology®. Halo formation utilizes a 20-30° tilt-angle implantation [1]. The block mask defines the geometries of the resist opening to allow implantation of atoms to extend into the channel region. Due to designed resolution scaling and tolerance in conjunction with substrate topography, there can be undesired influence on the electrical …

The Sn 393-Snr Rx J1713.7-3946 (G347.3-0.5) Connection, Robert A. Fesen, Richard Kremer, Daniel Patnaude, Dan Milisavljevic
Dartmouth Scholarship
Although the connection of the Chinese "guest" star of 393 AD with the Galactic supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 (G347.3-0.5) made by Wang et al. in 1997 is consistent with the remnant's relatively young properties and the guest star's projected position within the "tail" of the constellation Scorpius, there are difficulties with such an association. The brief Chinese texts concerning the 393 AD guest star make no comment about its apparent brightness, stating only that it disappeared after eight months. However, at the remnant's current estimated 1-1.3 kpc distance and A V 3, its supernova (SN) should have been a visually …
Background-Oriented Schlieren Pattern Optimization, Jeffery E. Hartberger
Background-Oriented Schlieren Pattern Optimization, Jeffery E. Hartberger
Theses and Dissertations
This paper describes a test series to investigate background patterns used for the Background-Oriented Schlieren field density measurement technique. Several varying background patterns were substituted under similar fluid density conditions to visualize and isolate the effects of patterns in the background images. A qualitative comparison was completed of the flow visualization results of each background pattern to categorize background conditions that improved the flow visualization image. Changes in background patterns revealed significant changes in flow visualization. Pattern contrast, spacing and sizing all played large parts in the quality of the visual density gradient imaging during the test series.

The adverse technogenic impact of industrial accidents that have gripped the world in recent decades definitely testifies to the problem-ridden character of contemporary economic and technological development. This is especially evident on the example of nuclear industry, which proved to be a source of dangerous pollution in case of potential (and real) catastrophes, as recently borne out by the Fukushima disaster. In this regard, the issues of Chernobyl disaster once again become the part of the discourse centered on the analysis of global nuclear industry problems. Likewise, current situation in Ukraine demands deeper investigation of the problems of technological development, …
Mechanics Of Expanding Grout Based Grips For Large Scale Composites Testing, Derek G. Schesser
Mechanics Of Expanding Grout Based Grips For Large Scale Composites Testing, Derek G. Schesser
Open Access Theses
Experimental testing of large composite specimens under tension or shear is inherently challenging because the large required gripping force and resulting local stress concentration tend to break specimens near gripping sites, rather than desired gage sections. A method using expansive grout materials has been proposed since the mid 1990’s. However, there has been no well-established design guideline due to lack of understanding of the gripping pressure developed by the expansive grout material. Key properties including the elastic modulus and linear expansion coefficient are difficult to measure because typical grout materials do not consolidate into coherent solid blocks for traditional property …

The Effect Of Problem-Solving Video Games On The Science Reasoning Skills Of College Students, Tina Marie Fanetti
The Effect Of Problem-Solving Video Games On The Science Reasoning Skills Of College Students, Tina Marie Fanetti
Dissertations
As the world continues to rapidly change, students are faced with the need to develop flexible skills, such as science reasoning that will help them thrive in the new knowledge economy. Prensky (2001), Gee (2003), and Van Eck (2007) have all suggested that the way to engage learners and teach them the necessary skills is through digital games, but empirical studies focusing on popular games are scant. One way digital games, especially video games, could potentially be useful if there were a flexible and inexpensive method a student could use at their convenience to improve selected science reasoning skills. Problem-solving …

The quality of polluted soil can much be improved and the environmental risks reduced by use of phytoremediation. Harmful hydrocarbon compounds can be degraded through the activity of plant and its associated microbes. We previously showed that PAHs increase aromatic ring-cleavage gene diversity in rhizosphere of birch (Sipilä et al. 2008, Yrjälä et al. 2010a) and the rhizosphere of aspen harbors Burkholderia bacteria able to degrade aromatics (Yrjälä et al. 2010b). The results are promising for successful remediation of polluted soils with woody plants. The aim of our studies is to elucidate the response of the plant and the associated …

Detail Extraction From Electron Backscatter Diffraction Patterns, John A. Basinger
Detail Extraction From Electron Backscatter Diffraction Patterns, John A. Basinger
Theses and Dissertations
Cross-correlation based analysis of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns and the use of simulated reference patterns has opened up entirely new avenues of insight into local lattice properties within EBSD scans. The benefits of accessing new levels of orientation resolution and multiple types of previously inaccessible data measures are accompanied with new challenges in characterizing microscope geometry and other error previously ignored in EBSD systems. The foremost of these challenges, when using simulated patterns in high resolution EBSD (HR-EBSD), is the determination of pattern center (the location on the sample from which the EBSD pattern originated) with sufficient accuracy to …

A Comparative Case Study: Investigation Of A Certified Elementary Art Specialist Teaching Elementary Art Vs. A Non-Art Certified Teacher Teaching Elementary Art, Jordan Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Most colleges and universities offer a general course in elementary art education to provide instruction to the elementary generalist to enable that student to later provide art instruction to students at the elementary level. This course is commonly referred to as the two-credit course in elementary art education throughout this thesis. This thesis is a case study investigation of a certified elementary art specialist and a non-art certified teacher teaching elementary art in the Subject School District in Utah. It asks and gathers data on three main questions. How is art education valuable for elementary students? What is a quality …
A Perceptual Metric For Photo Retouching, Eric Kee, Hany Farid
A Perceptual Metric For Photo Retouching, Eric Kee, Hany Farid
Dartmouth Scholarship
In recent years, advertisers and magazine editors have been widely criticized for taking digital photo retouching to an extreme. Impossibly thin, tall, and wrinkle- and blemish-free models are routinely splashed onto billboards, advertisements, and magazine covers. The ubiquity of these unrealistic and highly idealized images has been linked to eating disorders and body image dissatisfaction in men, women, and children. In response, several countries have considered legislating the labeling of retouched photos. We describe a quantitative and perceptually meaningful metric of photo retouching. Photographs are rated on the degree to which they have been digitally altered by explicitly modeling and …

This document is intended to serve as a flexible and enduring reference guide for anyone creating and/or inputting metadata, either in the present or in the future. Both the best practices and metadata templates are adaptable to different projects. These tools were created with the understanding that good metadata make materials accessible; our recommendations provide for a common understanding of how descriptive metadata fields will be used, ordered, and formatted in order to 1) enable users to successfully search, identify and locate digital resources; and 2) ensure the quality and consistency of metadata across our collections.
