Multi-Objective Optimization Of Mems-Based Box Pattern Microheaters Using Response Surface Method, Onny Setyawati, Moch. Agus Choiron, Axel Bangert, Carl Sandhagen

Elinvo (Electronics, Informatics, and Vocational Education)

We present a response surface method to evaluate multi-objective optimization for MEMS-based microheater design. Box pattern, the standard microheater shape, was selected in this study since it has a uniform temperature distribution compared to other patterns. The optimum parameters are used to obtain the maximum total current density and Joule heat. Based on a hybrid of the Response Surface Method and Central Composited Design, the model simulation emerged with 25 sets of Design Experiments. As expected, the voltage is proportional to the increased output temperature and Joule heat of the microheater. Material thermal conductivity, anchor length and thickness of the …

The Knowledge-Driven Exploration Of Integrated Biomedical Knowledge Sources Facilitates The Generation Of New Hypotheses, Vinh Nguyen, Olivier Bodenreider, Todd Minning, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Knowledge gained from the scientific literature can complement newly obtained experimental data in helping researchers understand the pathological processes underlying diseases. However, unless the scientific literature and experimental data are semantically integrated, it is generally difficult for scientists to exploit the two sources effectively. We argue that, in addition to the semantic integration of heterogeneous knowledge sources, the usability of the integrated resource by scientists is dependent upon the availability of knowledge visualization and exploration tools. Moreover, the integration techniques must be scalable and the exploration interfaces must be easy to use by bench scientists. The end goal of such …

The Group-Level Consequences Of Sexual Conflict In Multigroup Populations, Omar Tonsi Eldakar, Andrew C. Gallup Oct 2011

The Group-Level Consequences Of Sexual Conflict In Multigroup Populations, Omar Tonsi Eldakar, Andrew C. Gallup

Biology Faculty Articles

In typical sexual conflict scenarios, males best equipped to exploit females are favored locally over more prudent males, despite reducing female fitness. However, local advantage is not the only relevant form of selection. In multigroup populations, groups with less sexual conflict will contribute more offspring to the next generation than higher conflict groups, countering the local advantage of harmful males. Here, we varied male aggression within-and between-groups in a laboratory population of water striders and measured resulting differences in local population growth over a period of three weeks. The overall pool fitness (i.e., adults produced) of less aggressive pools exceeded …

Mixed State Effects In Waveguide Electro-Absorbers Based On Quantum Dots, T. Piwonski, Jaroslaw Pulka, Guillaume Huyet, Et. Al. Oct 2011

Mixed State Effects In Waveguide Electro-Absorbers Based On Quantum Dots, T. Piwonski, Jaroslaw Pulka, Guillaume Huyet, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Multi-pulse heterodyne pump-probe measurements are used to investigate the reverse bias dynamics of InAs/GaAs quantum dots in a waveguide structure. Using a femtosecond pulse, we simultaneously populate high energy ground states and low energy excited states and measure the resulting gain and phase dynamics over the bandwidth of the pulse. We identify a ∼5 ps timescale in the phase dynamics which can be associated with low energy ground states outside the pulse bandwidth and may provide an explanation for the deterioration of monolithic mode locked laser performance at high reverse voltages.

Towards The Grounding Of Abstract Words: A Neural Network Model For Cognitive Robots, F Stramandinoli, A Cangelosi, D Marocco Oct 2011

Towards The Grounding Of Abstract Words: A Neural Network Model For Cognitive Robots, F Stramandinoli, A Cangelosi, D Marocco

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper, a model based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) extends the symbol grounding mechanism toabstract words for cognitive robots. The aim of this work is to obtain a semantic representation of abstract concepts through the grounding in sensorimotor experiences for a humanoid robotic platform. Simulation experiments have been developed on a software environment for the iCub robot. Words that express general actions with a sensorimotor component are first taught to the simulated robot. During the training stage the robot first learns to perform a set of basic action primitives through the mechanism of direct grounding. Subsequently, the grounding …

Analysis Of Via Impedance Variations With A Polynomial Chaos Method, Jianxiang Shen, Hanfeng Wang, Ji Chen, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose a systematic framework for the optimization and analysis of the equivalent characteristic impedance of practical via structures. the framework consists of (a) optimizing via structures for impedance matching using a Genetic algorithm, and (b) numerically characterize, by Polynomial Chaos (PC) method, the sensitivity of the equivalent characteristic impedance to the manufacturing uncertainties in the various geometrical parameters of a via structure. the PC method can be effectively used to compute important statistical information, such as moments, probabilities and sensitivities with respect to the design variables. the PC method is straightforward to implement and can be …

Statistical Estimation Of Root Mean Square Crosstalk In Sfp+ Cable Evaluations, Dazhao Liu, Jue Chen, Zhiping Yang, Jun Fan Oct 2011

Statistical Estimation Of Root Mean Square Crosstalk In Sfp+ Cable Evaluations, Dazhao Liu, Jue Chen, Zhiping Yang, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A rigorous statistical estimation of the root mean square equation is proposed for near-end crosstalk simulation in SFP+ cable evaluations. This method employs the pulse response, the near-end output in the victim pair due to a single-pulse input of one bit long in the aggressor pair. This pulse response can be obtained from vector network analyzer (VNA) measurements. Thus SFP+ cable evaluations can be effectively performed using easier and more accurate frequency-domain measurements, instead of the time-domain ones defined in the specification. © 2011 IEEE.

Estimation Of Crosstalk Among Multiple Stripline Traces Crossing A Split By Compressed Sensing, Tao Wang, Yiyu Shi, Songping Wu, Jun Fan Oct 2011

Estimation Of Crosstalk Among Multiple Stripline Traces Crossing A Split By Compressed Sensing, Tao Wang, Yiyu Shi, Songping Wu, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In printed circuit board (PCB) designs, it is common to split power/ground planes into different partitions, which leads to more crosstalk among signal traces that route crossing a split. It is of general interest to develop a crosstalk model for various geometric parameters. However, the long time required to simulate the structure with any given set of geometric parameters renders general modelling approaches such as interpolation inefficient. in this paper, we develop an empirical model based upon the compressed sensing technique to characterize the crosstalk among traces as a function of geometric parameters. a good agreement between the empirical model …

A Reversibility Analysis Of Encoding Methods For Spiking Neural Networks, Catherine Johnson, S. Roychowdhury, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Oct 2011

A Reversibility Analysis Of Encoding Methods For Spiking Neural Networks, Catherine Johnson, S. Roychowdhury, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There is much excitement surrounding the idea of using spiking neural networks (SNNs) as the next generation of function-approximating neural networks. However, with the unique mechanism of communication (neural spikes) between neurons comes the challenge of transferring real-world data into the network to process. Many different encoding methods have been developed for SNNs, most temporal and some spatial. This paper analyzes three of them (Poisson rate encoding, Gaussian receptor fields, and a dual-neuron n-bit representation) and tests to see if the information is fully transformed into the spiking patterns. an oft-neglected consideration in encoding for SNNs is whether or not …

This paper demonstrates a Semantic Web enabled system for collecting and processing sensor data within a rescue environment. The real-time system collects heterogeneous raw sensor data from rescue robots through a wireless sensor network. The raw sensor data is converted to RDF using the Semantic Sensor Network (SSN) ontology and further processed to generate abstractions used for event detection in emergency scenarios.

Demonstration: Real-Time Semantic Analysis Of Sensor Streams, Harshal Patni, Cory Andrew Henson, Michael Cooney, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

The emergence of dynamic information sources – including sensor networks – has led to large streams of real-time data on the Web. Research studies suggest, these dynamic networks have created more data in the last three years than in the entire history of civilization, and this trend will only increase in the coming years [1]. With this coming data explosion, real-time analytics software must either adapt or die [2]. This paper focuses on the task of integrating and analyzing multiple heterogeneous streams of sensor data with the goal of creating meaningful abstractions, or features. These features are then temporally aggregated …

Gpu-Based Interactive Cut-Surface Extraction From High-Order Finite Element Fields, Blake Nelson, Robert Haimes, Robert M. Kirby

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

We present a GPU-based ray-tracing system for the accurate and interactive visualization of cut-surfaces through 3D simulations of physical processes created from spectral/hp high-order finite element methods. When used by the numerical analyst to debug the solver, the ability for the imagery to precisely reflect the data is critical. In practice, the investigator interactively selects from a palette of visualization tools to construct a scene that can answer a query of the data. This is effective as long as the implicit contract of image quality between the individual and the visualization system is upheld. OpenGL rendering of scientific visualizations has …
