Examples Of Minimal-Memory, Non-Catastrophic Quantum Convolutional Encoders, Mark M. Wilde, Monireh Houshmand, Saied Hosseini-Khayat

Faculty Publications

One of the most important open questions in the theory of quantum convolutional coding is to determine a minimal-memory, non-catastrophic, polynomial-depth convolutional encoder for an arbitrary quantum convolutional code. Here, we present a technique that finds quantum convolutional encoders with such desirable properties for several example quantum convolutional codes (an exposition of our technique in full generality appears elsewhere). We first show how to encode the well-studied Forney-Grassl-Guha (FGG) code with an encoder that exploits just one memory qubit (the former Grassl-Rtteler encoder requires 15 memory qubits). We then show how our technique can find an online decoder corresponding to …

Fabrication And Application Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Templated Silicon Nanomaterials, Jun Song Oct 2011

Fabrication And Application Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Templated Silicon Nanomaterials, Jun Song

Theses and Dissertations

A process, called carbon nanotube templated microfabrication (CNT-M) makes high aspect ratio microstructures out of a wide variety of materials by growing patterned vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) as a framework and then infiltrating various materials into the frameworks by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). By using the CNT-M procedure, a partial Si infiltration of carbon nanotube frameworks results in porous three dimensional microscale shapes consisting of silicon-carbon nanotube composites. The addition of thin silicon shells to the vertically aligned CNTs (VACNTs) enables the fabrication of robust silicon nanostructures with edibility to design a wide range of geometries. Nanoscale dimensions are …

Optimized Hyperspectral Imagery Anomaly Detection Through Robust Parameter Design, Francis M. Mindrup Oct 2011

Optimized Hyperspectral Imagery Anomaly Detection Through Robust Parameter Design, Francis M. Mindrup

Theses and Dissertations

Anomaly detection algorithms for hyperspectral imagery (HSI) are an important first step in the analysis chain which can reduce the overall amount of data to be processed. The actual amount of data reduced depends greatly on the accuracy of the anomaly detection algorithm implemented. Most, if not all, anomaly detection algorithms require a user to identify some initial parameters. These parameters (or controls) affect overall algorithm performance. Regardless of the anomaly detector being utilized, algorithm performance is often negatively impacted by uncontrollable noise factors which introduce additional variance into the process. In the case of HSI, the noise variables are …

Statistical Analysis Of Curve Fitting In Errors-In-Variables Models, Ali Al-Sharadqah Oct 2011

Statistical Analysis Of Curve Fitting In Errors-In-Variables Models, Ali Al-Sharadqah

Analysis Seminar

Fitting geometric curves such as lines, circles, and ellipses to data is a fundamental task in computer vision, image processing, and pattern recognition. These problems are classified as Errors-in-Variables models (EIV), where both coordinates of observations are subject to noise, making them more challenging than classical regression. This talk explores statistical methods to assess EIV parameter estimators, comparing geometric and algebraic fits for circles and ellipses. We present new estimators with superior accuracy and bias reduction.

Working To Educate Global Citizens And Create Neighborly Communities Locally And Globally: Penn’S Partnerships In West Philadelphia As A Democratic Experiment In Progress, Ira Harkavy, Matt Hartley, Joann Weeks, Rita Hodges Oct 2011

Working To Educate Global Citizens And Create Neighborly Communities Locally And Globally: Penn’S Partnerships In West Philadelphia As A Democratic Experiment In Progress, Ira Harkavy, Matt Hartley, Joann Weeks, Rita Hodges

Higher Learning Research Communications

In the rapidly accelerating global era in which we now live, human beings must solve a vast array of unprecedently complex problems. Perhaps the most complex and significant problems facing society today are persistent, widening, and increasingly destructive social, economic, and political inequality; globally destructive, man-made climate change; and increasingly frequent and savage terrorist acts. Given their proclaimed dedication to critical intelligence, and their unique constellation of formidable resources to develop it, institutions of higher education, we submit, have a unique responsibility to help solve these problems—indeed all the problems intensified by globalization.

The Honor Of Private Law, Nathan Oman Oct 2011

The Honor Of Private Law, Nathan Oman

Fordham Law Review

While combativeness is central to how our culture both experiences and conceptualizes litigation, we generally notice it only as a regrettable cost. This Article offers a less squeamish vision, one that sees in the struggle of people suing one another a morally valuable activity: the vindication of insulted honor. This claim is offered as a normative defense of a civil recourse approach to private law. According to civil recourse theorists, tort and contract law should be seen as empowering plaintiffs to act against defendants, rather than as economically optimal incentives or as a means of enforcing duties of corrective justice. …

A Measurement Of The Semileptonic Branching Fraction Of The B_S Meson, Duncan Brown, J. P. Lees Oct 2011

A Measurement Of The Semileptonic Branching Fraction Of The B_S Meson, Duncan Brown, J. P. Lees

Physics - All Scholarship

We report a measurement of the inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of the B_s meson using data collected with the BaBar detector in the center-of-mass (CM) energy region above the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We use the inclusive yield of phi mesons and the phi yield in association with a high-momentum lepton to perform a simultaneous measurement of the semileptonic branching fraction and the production rate of B_s mesons relative to all B mesons as a function of CM energy. The inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of the B_s meson is determined to be B(B_s to l nu X)=9.5 (+2.5/-2.0)(stat)(+1.1/-1.9)(syst)%, where l indicates the …

Effect Of Coarse Marine Aerosols On Stratocumulus Clouds, Yoav Lehahn, Ilan Koren, Orit Altaratz, Alexander Kostinski Oct 2011

Effect Of Coarse Marine Aerosols On Stratocumulus Clouds, Yoav Lehahn, Ilan Koren, Orit Altaratz, Alexander Kostinski

Department of Physics Publications

In contrast to fine anthropogenic aerosols (radii ∼μm), large aerosol particles are thought to enhance cloud droplet growth, promote precipitation formation and reduce cloud albedo. While shown in cloud simulation models, the impact of coarse aerosols on marine stratocumulus clouds lacks observational evidence. Here, by combining data from AMSR‐E and MODIS, both aboard NASA's satellite Aqua, we link the amount of coarse marine aerosols emitted to the atmosphere through wind‐driven processes with the size of cloud droplets, at the world's largest deck of marine stratocumulus clouds over the southeastern Pacific. For constrained meteorological conditions, approximately 1/2 of the change in …

Toward High-Performance Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials: The Progress Of Bottom-Up Solution Chemistry Approaches, Yixin Zhao, Jeffrey S. Dyck, Clemens Burda Oct 2011

Toward High-Performance Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials: The Progress Of Bottom-Up Solution Chemistry Approaches, Yixin Zhao, Jeffrey S. Dyck, Clemens Burda

Physics

Significant research effort has recently gone into the synthesis of thermoelectric nanomaterials through different chemical approaches since nanomaterials chemistry became a promising strategy for improving thermoelectric performance. Different thermoelectric nanocrystals, especially PbTe, Bi2Te3 and CoSb3, with various compositions and morphologies have been successfully prepared by solvo/hydrothermal, electrochemical, and ligand-based synthesis methods. Such nanoscale materials show not only substantial reduction in thermal conductivity due to increased phonon scattering at nanoscale grain boundaries and lower densities of phonon states but possibly also an enhancement in thermopower due to electronic quantum size effects. More recently, the notoriously low …

Rational Ligand Design For Potential Applications In Transition Metal Catalysis, Sergey L. Sedinkin Oct 2011

Rational Ligand Design For Potential Applications In Transition Metal Catalysis, Sergey L. Sedinkin

Dissertations

Strategies to influence the steric and electronic properties of three classes of ligands were investigated. First, a compound class known as amino-dithiaphospholanes was studied. It is structurally related to phosphoramidites, which have been successfully applied in catalysis. The synthesis of amino-dithiaphospholanes was envisaged as an approach to electronically tuned phosphoramidites. General access to a variety of structurally modified amino-dithiaphospholanes from commercially available starting materials was developed. The electron donating properties of the new ligands were characterized by NMR. They were found to be more electron-donating than the corresponding phosphoramidites. The coordination chemistry of amino-dithiaphospholanes was investigated by synthesis of a …

Light-Bending Tests Of Lorentz Invariance, Quentin G. Bailey, Rhondale Tso Oct 2011

Light-Bending Tests Of Lorentz Invariance, Quentin G. Bailey, Rhondale Tso

Physics & Astronomy - Prescott

Classical light-bending is investigated for weak gravitational fields in the presence of hypothetical local Lorentz violation. Using an effective field theory framework that describes general deviations from local Lorentz invariance, we derive a modified deflection angle for light passing near a massive body. The results include anisotropic effects not present for spherical sources in General Relativity as well as Weak Equivalence Principle violation. We develop an expression for the relative deflection of two distant stars that can be used to analyze data in past and future solar-system observations. The measurement sensitivities of such tests to coefficients for Lorentz violation are …

Preparation Of Novel Hydrolyzing Urethane Modified Thiol-Ene Networks, Nicole M. Mackey, Bridget S. Confait, James Wynne, J. Paige Buchanan Oct 2011

Preparation Of Novel Hydrolyzing Urethane Modified Thiol-Ene Networks, Nicole M. Mackey, Bridget S. Confait, James Wynne, J. Paige Buchanan

Faculty Publications

Novel tetra-functional hydrolyzing monomers were prepared from the reaction of TEOS and select alkene-containing alcohols, ethylene glycol vinyl ether or 2-allyloxy ethanol, and combined with trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (tri-thiol) in a thiol-ene “click” polymerization reaction to produce clear, colorless thiol-ene networks using both radiation and thermal-cure techniques. These networks were characterized for various mechanical characteristics, and found to posses Tg’s (DSC), hardness, tack, and thermal stability (TGA) consistent with their molecular structures. A new ene-modified urethane oligomer was prepared based on the aliphatic polyisocyanate Desmodur® N 3600 and added to the thiol-ene hydrolyzable network series in increasing amounts, …

We present images of 29 post-starburst quasars (PSQs) from a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Channel Snapshot program. These broadlined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) possess the spectral signatures of massive (Mburst ∼ 1010 M⊙), moderate-aged stellar populations (hundreds of Myr). Thus, their composite nature provides insight into the AGN–starburst connection. We measure quasar-to-host galaxy light contributions via semi-automated two-dimensional light profile fits of point-spread-function-subtracted images. We examine the host morphologies and model the separate bulge and disk components. The HST/ACS-F606W images reveal an equal number of spiral (13/29) and early-type (13/29) hosts, with the …
