Promotion, Prevention Or Both: Regulatory Focus And Culture Revisited, Jenny Kurman, Chin Ming Hui Nov 2011

Promotion, Prevention Or Both: Regulatory Focus And Culture Revisited, Jenny Kurman, Chin Ming Hui

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Regulatory focus theory (e.g., Higgins, 1997) presented a differentiation between promotion orientation, focused on growth and advancement, and prevention orientation, focused on safety and security. Cross-culture differences in these systems generally show that that collectivist, Eastern cultures (mostly East-Asian cultures) are considered as prevention oriented whereas Western cultures are considered as promotion oriented. Two main claims that contribute to the refinement of the relations between culture and regulatory foci will be presented. The first refinement pertains to the relations between individualism-collectivism and regulatory foci on base of the vertical-horizontal distinction, showing that vertical collectivism is especially relevant to regulatory foci. …

Thermodynamics Of Magnetic Multilayers, Tathagata Mukherjee Nov 2011

Thermodynamics Of Magnetic Multilayers, Tathagata Mukherjee

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Our interest in thermodynamics of magnetic thin film heterostructure began by exploring the possibility to use magnetic nanostructures in the search for optimized magnetocaloric materials for potential room temperature refrigeration. In the present thesis magnetic thin film heterostructures are experimentally realized by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). Co/Cr and Fe/Cr superlattices were fabricated using mean-field theoretical concepts as guiding principles. The potential of artificial antiferromagnets for near room-temperature refrigeration is explored. Magnetocaloric properties are deduced from measurements of the temperature and field dependence of the magnetization of our samples. The effects of intra-plane and inter-plane exchange …

Quantification Of Vascular Perfusion In The Spinal Cord After Injury., Ruthie S. Fligor Nov 2011

Quantification Of Vascular Perfusion In The Spinal Cord After Injury., Ruthie S. Fligor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic injury destroys blood vessels at the injury epicenter and is followed by local angiogenesis and regional inflammation. Healing from injury depends on vascular health because blood supply is directly responsible for the health and function of surrounding tissue. This work establishes a new method for qualitatively and quantitatively measuring the blood supply of spinal cord (SC) tissue. Systemically injecting fluorescent microspheres (FMs) and cryostat sectioning SC tissue reveals a novel and potentially powerful way of assessing blood supply. This method is easily incorporated with existing tissue processing protocols because it does not require chemical digestion of the tissue region …

Holographic Recording In Corona Charged Acrylamide-Based Mfi-Zeolite Photopolymer, Temenujka Yovcheva, Izabela Naydenova, Simeon Sainov, Vincent Toal, Svetlana Mintova

Articles

The influence of corona charging on holographic recording in acrylamide-based photopolymer nanocomposite containing MFI zeolite nanoparticles has been studied. The holographic recording was carried out in two different geometries —transmission grating recording and total internal reflection grating recording. During the recording process, the layers were charged in a corona field. It was observed that independently of the corona polarity, in the case of transmission geometry of recording, the corona charging led to a decrease in the diffraction efficiency (DE) of the grating. In the case of the total internal reflection grating, the DE increased in the corona field presence.

Quantum Phase Transition Of The Sub-Ohmic Rotor Model, Manal Al-Ali, Thomas Vojta Nov 2011

Quantum Phase Transition Of The Sub-Ohmic Rotor Model, Manal Al-Ali, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the behavior of an N-component quantum rotor coupled to a bosonic dissipative bath having a sub-Ohmic spectral density J (ω) ∝ ωs with s < 1.With increasing dissipation strength, this system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a delocalized phase to a localized phase. We determine the exact critical behavior of this transition in the large-N limit. For 1 > s > 1/2, we find nontrivial critical behavior corresponding to an interacting renormalization group fixed point, while we find mean-field behavior for s < 1/2. The results agree with those of the corresponding long-range …

Poincaré Sphere Representation Of The Fixed-Polarizer Rotating-Retarder Optical System, R. M.A. Azzam Nov 2011

Poincaré Sphere Representation Of The Fixed-Polarizer Rotating-Retarder Optical System, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The trajectory of the polarization state of a monochromatic light beam after it passes through a fixed linear polarizer and a rotating linear retarder of arbitrary retardance Δ is determined on the Poincaré sphere. The three-dimensional figure-8 contour is shown to be the line of intersection of a right-circular cylinder with the sphere. The cylinder is parallel to the polar (s3) axis, touches the sphere at the equator (at the point that represents the linear polarization transmitted by the fixed polarizer), and has a radius r=sin2(Δ/2). Projections of the trajectory in the coordinate planes of the …

Evaluating Summer School Programs And The Effect On Student Achievement: The Correlation Between Stanford-10 Standardized Test Scores And Two Different Summer Programs, Alicia Kaye Bottorff

Dissertations

Educators have been looking for a solution to increasing yearly student achievement while at the same time ensuring that the achievement gap between students of high and low socioeconomic status does not continue to widen each year. Many studies examined show that students experience summer learning loss if not in school during the months of June through September. Because of this research, the district being studied extended their summer school program format from four-weeks to six-weeks. This collaborative, quantitative study examined assessment data from the SAT 10 to explore the correlation between middle school math and language arts test data …

Refining Greenstep: Impacts Of Vehicle Technologies And Its/Operational Improvements On Travel Speed And Fuel Consumption Curves, Kelly Clifton, Alexander Y. Bigazzi Nov 2011

Refining Greenstep: Impacts Of Vehicle Technologies And Its/Operational Improvements On Travel Speed And Fuel Consumption Curves, Kelly Clifton, Alexander Y. Bigazzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This report describes analysis undertaken to establish a method for incorporating traffic operations and ITS strategies into the GreenSTEP model. We first discuss operations impacts on fuel economy and delay from the literature. Then, an investigation of delay adjustments in GreenSTEP shows that different methods of representing delay changes lead to similar (and small) impacts on fuel economy. From this result we establish average speed adjustment by congestion level as the preferred method for incorporating delay effects from operations improvements. An investigation of aggregate traffic operations impacts produces estimates of base speeds without operations improvements, maximum speeds with full operational …

Coping With Distance: An Empirical Study Of Communication On The Jazz Platform, Renuka Sindhgatta, Bikram Sengupta, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Global software development - which is characterized by teams separated by physical distance and/or time-zone differences - has traditionally posed significant communication challenges. Often these have caused delays in completing tasks, or created misalignment across sites leading to re-work. In recent years, however, a new breed of development environments with rich collaboration features have emerged to facilitate cross-site work in distributed projects. In this paper we revisit the question "does distance matter?" in the context of IBM Jazz Platform -- a state-of-the-art collaborative development environment. We study the ecosystem of a large distributed team of around 300 members across 35 …

Enabling Gpu Acceleration With Messaging Middleware, Randall E. Duran, Li Zhang, Tom Hayhurst Nov 2011

Enabling Gpu Acceleration With Messaging Middleware, Randall E. Duran, Li Zhang, Tom Hayhurst

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graphics processing units (GPUs) offer great potential for accelerating processing for a wide range of scientific and business applications. However, complexities associated with using GPU technology have limited its use in applications. This paper reviews earlier approaches improving GPU accessibility, and explores how integration with middleware messaging technologies can further improve the accessibility and usability of GPU-enabled platforms. The results of a proof-of-concept integration between an open-source messaging middleware platform and a general-purpose GPU platform using the CUDA framework are presented. Additional applications of this technique are identified and discussed as potential areas for further research.

Pat 3: An Extensible Architecture For Building Multi-Domain Model Checkers, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Model checking is emerging as an effective software verification method. Although it is desirable to have a dedicated model checker for each application domain, implementing one is rather challenging. In this work, we develop an extensible and integrated architecture in PAT3 (PAT version 3.*) to support the development of model checkers for wide range application domains. PAT3 adopts a layered design with an intermediate representation layer (IRL), which separates modeling languages from model checking algorithms so that the algorithms can be shared by different languages. IRL contains several common semantic models to support wide application domains, and builds both explicit …

Applying Time-Bound Hierarchical Key Assignment In Wireless Sensor Networks, Wentao Zhu, Robert H. Deng, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao Nov 2011

Applying Time-Bound Hierarchical Key Assignment In Wireless Sensor Networks, Wentao Zhu, Robert H. Deng, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Access privileges in distributed systems can be effectively organized as a partial-order hierarchy that consists of distinct security classes, and are often designated with certain temporal restrictions. The time-bound hierarchical key assignment problem is to assign distinct cryptographic keys to distinct security classes according to their privileges so that users from a higher class can use their class key to derive the keys of lower classes, and these keys are time-variant with respect to sequentially allocated temporal units called time slots. In this paper, we explore applications of time-bound hierarchical key assignment in a wireless sensor network environment where there …

Managing Successive Generation Product Diffusion In The Presence Of Strategic Consumers, Zhiling Guo Nov 2011

Managing Successive Generation Product Diffusion In The Presence Of Strategic Consumers, Zhiling Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Frequent new product release and technological uncertainty about the release time pose significant challenges for firms to manage successive generation of products. On the one hand, strategic consumers may delay their purchase decision and substitute the earlier generation with the newer generation product. On the other hand, the firm must fully anticipate consumer reactions and take into account the effect of their strategic behavior on product pricing and successive generation product diffusion. This paper proposes a prediction market to forecast new product release. We show that the market information aggregation mechanism can improve forecast accuracy of new product launch. Better …

Suspended Sediment Concentration In The Brushy Creek Watershed, Kentucky, Tyler Wade, Walter S. Borowski Nov 2011

Suspended Sediment Concentration In The Brushy Creek Watershed, Kentucky, Tyler Wade, Walter S. Borowski

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Suspended sediment concentration (SSC) can be used as a proxy for environmental health of stream water. For example, large sediment loads can cause harm to aquatic life and are a mechanism for introducing and transporting fecal microbes. We measure SSC of the Brushy Creek watershed, located in Rockcastle, Pulaski, and Lincoln Counties, where the Eastern Kentucky Environmental Research Institute (EK-ERI) has been conducting an assessment of the watershed. Two auto sampling units were placed in Brushy Creek to collect water samples for determination of SSC. The units collect samples every 14 hours for a two-week period, then samples are retrieved …

Tates Creek is a significant tributary to the Kentucky River that has shown high levels of microbial and nutrient pollution. We sampled the waters of Tates Creek comprehensively by occupying 25 stations along its 13-mile length, collecting stream water at the confluence of major tributaries from its headwaters to the Kentucky River. Samples were collected four times between May and August 2011 during dry periods as well as immediately after rainfall events.

We measured ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-) and phosphate (PO4-) concentrations using colorimetry. Microbial samples were measured for total coliform …

On Elementary Loops Of Logic Programs, Martin Gerber, Joohyung Lee, Yuliya Lierler Nov 2011

On Elementary Loops Of Logic Programs, Martin Gerber, Joohyung Lee, Yuliya Lierler

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Using the notion of an elementary loop, Gebser and Schaub (2005. Proceedings of the Eighth International Conference on Logic Programming and Nonmonotonic Reasoning (LPNMR'05), 53–65) refined the theorem on loop formulas attributable to Lin and Zhao (2004) by considering loop formulas of elementary loops only. In this paper, we reformulate the definition of an elementary loop, extend it to disjunctive programs, and study several properties of elementary loops, including how maximal elementary loops are related to minimal unfounded sets. The results provide useful insights into the stable model semantics in terms of elementary loops. For a nondisjunctive program, …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

We have recently discovered an allosteric switch in Ras, bringing an additional level of complexity to this GTPase whose mutants are involved in nearly 30% of cancers. Upon activation of the allosteric switch, there is a shift in helix 3/loop 7 associated with a disorder to order transition in the active site. Here, we use a combination of multiple solvent crystal structures and computational solvent mapping (FTMap) to determine binding site hot spots in the “off” and “on” allosteric states of the GTP-bound form of H-Ras. Thirteen sites are revealed, expanding possible target sites for ligand binding well beyond the …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Stress Diffusion On The Dynamics Of Creeping Viscoelastic Flow, Becca Thomases Nov 2011

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Stress Diffusion On The Dynamics Of Creeping Viscoelastic Flow, Becca Thomases

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

The effect of stress diffusivity is examined in both the Oldroyd-B and FENE-P models of a viscoelastic fluid in the low Reynolds (Stokes) limit for a 2D periodic time-dependent flow. A local analytic solution can be obtained when assuming a flow of the form u=Wi-1(x,-y), where Wi is the Weissenberg number. In this case the width of the birefringent strand of the polymer stress scales with the added viscosity as ν1/2, and is independent of the Weissenberg number. Also, the " expected" maximum extension of the polymer coils remains finite with any stress diffusion and scales as Wi·ν-1/2. These predictions …

Most, if not all, disk galaxies have a thin (classical) disk and a thick disk. In most models thick disks are thought to be a necessary consequence of the disk formation and/or evolution of the galaxy. We present the results of a study of the thick disk properties in a sample of carefully selected edge-on galaxies with types ranging from T = 3 to T = 8. We fitted one-dimensional luminosity profiles with physically motivated functions—the solutions of two stellar and one gaseous isothermal coupled disks in equilibrium—which are likely to yield more accurate results than other functions used in …

Construction Of An Np Problem With An Exponential Lower Bound, Roman V. Yampolskiy Nov 2011

Construction Of An Np Problem With An Exponential Lower Bound, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In this paper we present a Hashed-Path Traveling Salesperson Problem (HPTSP), a new type of problem which has the interesting property of having no polynomial time solutions. Next we show that HPTSP is in the class NP by demonstrating that local information about sub-routes is insufficient to compute the complete value of each route. As a consequence, via Ladner"s theorem, we show that the class NPI is non-empty.
