Characterization Of Photon Counting Czt Detectors For Medical X-Ray Imaging And Spectroscopy, Shannon Fritz Jan 2011

Characterization Of Photon Counting Czt Detectors For Medical X-Ray Imaging And Spectroscopy, Shannon Fritz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to characterize a photon counting cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector for medical x-ray imaging and spectroscopy purposes. The overall aim was to characterize CZT detector properties and to develop modifications and correction methods to address the limiting factors, making the detector clinically viable. Methods: Hole trapping issues were investigated through simulation and experiments with a large area single pixel CZT detector under three different irradiation geometries: edge-on, surface-on, and tilted angle irradiation. Characteristic x-ray escape was simulated using Monte Carlo methods and compared to measurements with a small pixel CZT imaging detector. Monoenergetic …

Imaging The Extracellular Ph Of Tumors By Mri After Injection Of A Single Cocktail Of T1 And T2 Contrast Agents, Gary V. Martinez, Xiaomeng Zhang, María L. García-Martín, David L. Morse, Mark Woods, A. Dean Sherry, Robert J. Gillies Jan 2011

Gillies

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The extracellular pH (pH(e) ) of solid tumors is acidic, and there is evidence that an acidic pH(e) is related to invasiveness. Herein, we describe an MRI single-infusion method to measure pH(e) in gliomas using a cocktail of contrast agents (CAs). The cocktail contained gadolinium-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraaminophosphonate (GdDOTA-4AmP) and dysprosium-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(methylenephosphonic acid) (DyDOTP), whose effects on relaxation are sensitive and insensitive to pH, respectively. The Gd-CA dominated the spin-lattice relaxivity ΔR(1) , whereas the Dy-CA dominated the spin-spin relaxivity ΔR(2)*. The ΔR(2)* effects were used to determine the pixel-wise concentration of [Dy] which, in turn, was used to calculate a value for [Gd] …

Microphytobenthos Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Area And Their Role In Oxygen Dynamics, Melissa Millman Baustian Jan 2011

Microphytobenthos Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Area And Their Role In Oxygen Dynamics, Melissa Millman Baustian

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The presence or absence of microphytobenthos on the seafloor provides clues about whether benthic oxygen evolution contributes significantly to the oxygen budget of the hypoxic area in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Hypoxia (oxygen < 2 mg l-1) creates inadequate concentrations of dissolved oxygen to support most organisms, such as fish, shrimp and crabs, and occurs over large areas of the Louisiana continental shelf from spring through summer in most years. Oxygen production by benthic autotrophs may offset a decline in oxygen concentrations if there is a functioning community and sufficient light. I sampled three stations (14, 20 and 23 m depths) ~ 100 km west of the Mississippi River over three hypoxic annual cycles (2006 – 2008), and 11 stations along a 14 - 20 m contour on the shelf in late-July in 2006, 2007 and 2008. I used microscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography to estimate the biomass and composition of phytoplankton and microphytobenthos. The potential seasonal oxygen production was estimated in 2007 and 2008 by incubating coupled light/dark sediment cores and bottom water from two stations. The sediment community (cells > 3 um) differed from those in the water column and were frequently benthic pennate diatoms and filamentous cyanobacteria (58-88% seasonally and 1-99% in mid-summer). The concentration of microphytobenthic biomass was usually < 2.0 ug g dry sed-1, and various biotic parameters were influenced by light at the seafloor. Declines in dissolved oxygen over a seasonal cycle in 2007 and 2008 were affected more by the initial dissolved oxygen concentration than by the presence of microphytobenthos that could generate oxygen. The sediment (1.2 - 27.3 mmol O2 m-2 d-1, n = 97) and bottom-water (1.1 - 17.5 mmol m-2 d-1, n = 23) oxygen consumption rates were within the range of the few previously-reported data. This work adds to these data and also provides the only sediment oxygen consumption rates at fixed sites over seasonal time scales. These results provide critical input to three-dimensional, physical-biological models of oxygen dynamics for this hypoxic area.

Network Traffic Data Analysis, Harish Kapri Jan 2011

Network Traffic Data Analysis, Harish Kapri

LSU Master's Theses

The desire to conceptualize network traffic in a prevailing communication network is a facet for many types of network research studies. In this research, real traffic traces collected over trans-Pacific backbone links (the MAWI repository, providing publicly available anonymized traces) are analyzed to study the underlying traffic patterns. All data analysis and visualization is carried out using Matlab (Matlab is a trademark of The Mathworks, Inc.). At packet level, we first measure parameters such as distribution of packet lengths, distribution of protocol types, and then fit following analytical models. Next, the concept of flow is introduced and flow based analysis …

Preparation And Studies Of Ratiometric Fluorescent Chemosensors Based On The Attenuation Of Excitation Energy Transfer, Jiba Raj Acharya Jan 2011

Preparation And Studies Of Ratiometric Fluorescent Chemosensors Based On The Attenuation Of Excitation Energy Transfer, Jiba Raj Acharya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Molecular devices possessing pi-electron conjugated scaffold demonstrate unique capabilities as fluorescent chemosensors for the trace detection of analytes in a variety of environments. Important properties of these compounds such as charge transport and exciton migration, emission intensity etc. can be simply attenuated by external stimuli or analyte binding, leading to considerable changes in observable signals. The main goal of this Ph.D. dissertation was to study the possibility to control excitation energy migration in conjugated systems. Towards this goal, we designed surface-immobilized monodispersed oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene)s (OPEs) as a general basis for thin-film ratiometric fluorescent chemosensors. The sensor molecules have been functionalized …

Pore-Scale Lattice Boltzmann Simulations Of Inertial Flows In Realistic Porous Media: A First Principle Analysis Of The Forchheimer Relationship, Chukwudi Paul Chukwudozie

LSU Master's Theses

With recent advances in the capabilities of high performance computing (HPC) platforms and the relatively simple representation of complex geometries of porous media, lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has gained popularity as a means of solving fluid flow and transport problems. In this work, LBM was used to obtain flow parameters of porous media, study the behavior of these parameters at varying flow conditions and quantify the effect of roughness on the parameters by relating the volume averaged flow simulation results to Darcy and Forchheimer equations respectively. To validate the method, flow was simulated on regular and random sphere arrays in …

The Biological Activity Of Rare Carbohydrates And Cyclitols In Coptotermes Formosanus, Lucas James Veillon Jan 2011

The Biological Activity Of Rare Carbohydrates And Cyclitols In Coptotermes Formosanus, Lucas James Veillon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the interest of developing environmentally friendly interventions to infestations by Formosan subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, a number of carbohydrates were tested for effects on termites and symbionts. Among these, the D-galactose analog, 2-deoxy-D-galactose, myo-inositol and its fully phosphorylated derivative, phytate, showed promise as potential control chemicals. Feeding bioassays with 20 termite workers, where compounds were applied (concentrations ranged from 160.2-1281.7 µg/mm3) to 5 cm filter paper in water, indicated all three compounds significantly impact termite mortality in a dose dependent fashion over a 2 wk period. Interestingly, when myo-inositol was administered to termites in agar (40 mg/mL), in …

Understanding The Selective Detection Of Homocysteine And Studies Toward The Synthesis Of Vinigrol, Dong Wang Jan 2011

Understanding The Selective Detection Of Homocysteine And Studies Toward The Synthesis Of Vinigrol, Dong Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The first part of the work is dedicated to the selective detection of Homocysteine (Hcy). In order to better understand this colorimetric detection method, a thermodynamic model for the pH dependence of the effective reduction potential of Hcy derived á-carbon radicals has been proposed. And using viologen indicators of varying reduction potentials, we demonstrate that colorimetric changes occur at experimental pH values consistent with the model. The one-carbon bridge stereochemistry of bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane framework is critical to make the third ring of the tricyclic precursor of vinigrol. We studied this stereochemistry carefully and found that the major diastereomer formed from Robinson …

Laboratory Scale Seismic Analysis Of A Spatially Variable Hydrological Surface In Unconfined, Unconsolidated Sand, David E. Smolkin Jan 2011

Laboratory Scale Seismic Analysis Of A Spatially Variable Hydrological Surface In Unconfined, Unconsolidated Sand, David E. Smolkin

LSU Master's Theses

The ability to measure the depth to the water table can provide information such as reservoir characteristics, soil conditions for agriculture, and actions to be taken with contaminant flow and removal. We attempt to detect this boundary in a larger-than-lab scale experiment. We attempt to simulate a spatially variable water level and attempt to image changes in the depth of this water level. We try to reduce the normally complex natural conditions to those of a nominally homogeneous and isotropic, unconfined sand volume for modeling. These simplified conditions help isolate the effects of remaining complexities such as the variable saturation …

Oblivious Buy-At-Bulk Network Design Algorithms, Srivathsan Srinivasagopalan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Large-scale networks such as the Internet has emerged as arguably the most complex distributed communication network system. The mere size of such networks and all the various applications that run on it brings a large variety of challenging problems. Similar problems lie in any network - transportation, logistics, oil/gas pipeline etc where efficient paths are needed to route the flow of demands. This dissertation studies the computation of efficient paths from the demand sources to their respective destination(s). We consider the buy-at-bulk network design problem in which we wish to compute efficient paths for carrying demands from a set of …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Reactive surface lysine groups on the chimeric monoclonal antibody (3G4) and on human serum albumin (HSA) were labeled with two different PARACEST chelates. Between 7.4 – 10.1 chelates were added per 3G4 molecule and between 5.6 – 5.9 chelates per molecule of HSA, depending upon which conjugation chemistry was used. The immunoreactivity of 3G4 as measured by ELISA assays was highly dependent upon the number of attached chelates: 88% immunoreactivity with 7.4 chelates per antibody versus only 17% immunoreactivity with 10.1 chelates per antibody. Upon conjugation to 3G4, the bound water lifetime of Eu-1 increased only marginally, up from …

On The Thermodynamics Of Degradation, Mehdi Amir Darehbidi Jan 2011

On The Thermodynamics Of Degradation, Mehdi Amir Darehbidi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

All materials when subjected to fatigue loading are prone to failure if the number of cycles exceeds a certain level. Prediction of the number of cycles to failure is, therefore, of utmost importance in nearly all engineering applications. The existing methods for evaluating the fatigue life are tedious, expensive, and extremely time consuming as fatigue often takes many thousands to millions of cycles until failure occurs. Therefore, methods that can readily estimate the number of cycles to failure are highly desirable. In this work, innovative solutions to fatigue problems are presented and their practical significance is discussed. The premise of …

Improving Intelligence In A Counterinsurgency Or Counterterrorism Environment Through The Application Of A Critical Thinking-Based Framework, James Henry Hess

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The intelligence community is responsible for providing competent analysis and assessments pertaining to the many significant geo-political situations that may potentially or do effect the nation’s interests. The intelligence community has always experienced challenges living up to that charge, and while it may merely be a case of the nature of the profession, there are always lessons that can be learned and processes that may improve the analytical processes. Critical thinking is a cognitive process that may be able to provide that improvement to the analytical processes, and when an analytical framework is built by applying these cognitive skills, the …

Test-Driving Interventions To Increase Treatment Integrity And Student Outcomes, Evan Henry Dart Jan 2011

Test-Driving Interventions To Increase Treatment Integrity And Student Outcomes, Evan Henry Dart

LSU Master's Theses

Behavioral Consultation is typically an effective way for school psychologists to work with teachers to find an appropriate intervention for implementation in the classroom. While some teachers have no difficulty implementing suggested interventions with high integrity, this is not always the case. The present study attempted to develop a “test-drive” procedure by which resistant teachers were able to implement several interventions briefly in the hope that they found one to their liking and implement it with high levels of integrity. The results indicate that teachers resistant to traditional Behavioral Consultation were able to implement their preferred intervention with high rates …

Provenance And Origin Of Holocene Beach Ridge And Modern Beach Sands From The Costa De Nayarit, Western Mexico, Ruben Abe Cisneros Jan 2011

Provenance And Origin Of Holocene Beach Ridge And Modern Beach Sands From The Costa De Nayarit, Western Mexico, Ruben Abe Cisneros

LSU Master's Theses

The Costa de Nayarit in western Mexico is a classic modern example of the progradation of a coastline in a wave-dominated depositional environment. Throughout the Pleistocene, sediments have been brought to the Costa De Nayarit via three major river systems, the Rio Grande de Santiago, the Rio San Pedro and the Rio Acaponeta. These river systems obtain their sediments from two distinctly different volcanic provinces within central Mexico, the Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO), a volcanic province characterized by its predominance of felsic volcanism (rhyolites) and pyroclastic flows (welded ash flow tuff and ignimbrite), and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB), which …

Lqg/Ltr Control Of Induction Motor, Girish Arvind Yajurvedi Jan 2011

Lqg/Ltr Control Of Induction Motor, Girish Arvind Yajurvedi

LSU Master's Theses

Induction motors are the most rugged electrical equipment which are widely used in the industry. Owing to the non-linearity in its behaviour, it is not a trivial problem to solve and hence we are interested in using it as a control platform. Through several decades of research a wide number of control schemes have been developed for implementing the closed loop control. Based upon the merits and demerits of various schemes we choose a control scheme called the indirect vector control of Induction motor. Using the electrical dynamics of the motor model we design a LQG/LTR controller. We employ a …

Design, Development, And Testing Of A Multi-Agent Autonomous Surface Fleet For Environmental Applications, Daniel Davis Smith

LSU Master's Theses

As costs have decreased and both computational complexity and robustness have increased, the use of autonomous vehicles in real-world environments has increased dramatically. The development of a fleet of autonomous surface vehicles able to coordinate their actions through communications provides a significant tool for numerous water-based applications such as the reduction of predatory birds on aquaculture ponds, tracking of pollutant gradients, and water quality mapping applications. A fleet of three autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) was developed using the best characteristics from earlier designs. Each vehicle is a dual-pontoon, dual-paddlewheel design powered by batteries recharged using a vehicle-mounted solar array that …

Next Generation Multi-Scale Quantum Simulations For Strongly Correlated Materials, Shuxiang Yang Jan 2011

Next Generation Multi-Scale Quantum Simulations For Strongly Correlated Materials, Shuxiang Yang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis represents our effort to develop the next generation multi-scale quantum simulation methods suitable for strongly-correlated materials, where complicated phase-diagrams prevail, suggesting complicated underlying physics. We first give a detailed description of the parquet formalism. With its help, different approximate methods can be unified and a hierarchy of approximate methods with different accuracies and computational complexity can thus be designed. Next, we present a numerical solution of the parquet approximation. Results on the Hubbard model are compared to those obtained from Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC), FLuctuation EXchange (FLEX), and self-consistent second-order approximation methods. The comparison shows a satisfactory …

Trials & Tributaries: Myth And Disaster In Southern Louisiana, Hannah March Campbell Sanders Jan 2011

Trials & Tributaries: Myth And Disaster In Southern Louisiana, Hannah March Campbell Sanders

LSU Master's Theses

Trials and Tributaries examines recent disasters occurring in southern Louisiana, interpreted through the Greek myths The Twelve Labors of Herakles. Mankind’s false sense of control over Louisiana’s resources leaves us vulnerable to nature’s powerful acts of reclamation: hurricanes, floods and the ground sinking beneath our feet. While researching the details and origins of The Twelve Labors, I found a plethora of similarities with local culture, politics and natural disasters. The characters in these narrative prints include hybrid monsters drawn from Greek mythology, which I have then further augmented with various forms of local south Louisiana fauna and contemporary political figures. …

Stories Of The Proterozoic Earth: Paleoproterozoic Chuanlinggou Arcitarchs And Neoproterozoic ¹⁷O-Depleted Barite, Yongbo Peng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two independent topics, both critical to understanding Earth history during the Proterozoic Eon. (1) Paleoproterozoic Chuanlinggou Acritarchs: The eukaryotic affinity of acritarchs from the Chuanlinggou Formation has been questioned because of lack of indisputable morphological evidence. In this study, Chuanlinggou acritarchs were examined by jointly using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. In most cases, an ovoidal group of acritarchs represents a half-vesicle following a complete longitudinal rupture, which is a morphological model different from a whole envelope with medial splits, as proposed by earlier studies. This ovoidal group displays a bipolar morphology, …

When the Renaissance was in its full bloom in Italy, England was just beginning to show awareness of this ‘new learning’- humanism. In the mid- 1400s English scholars traveled abroad to Italy and collected books, knowledge, and learned the Greek language. Thomas Linacre and John Colet were part of a younger generation that benefited from this previous experience and both men travelled to Italy to continue their scholarly pursuits. Linacre arrived in Florence during the height of humanist scholarship. While there he came under the influence of medical humanists, devoted to the translation of ancient medical texts from Greek into …

Integrating Multiple Clusters For Compute-Intensive Applications, Zhifeng Yun Jan 2011

Integrating Multiple Clusters For Compute-Intensive Applications, Zhifeng Yun

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Multicluster grids provide one promising solution to satisfying the growing computational demands of compute-intensive applications. However, it is challenging to seamlessly integrate all participating clusters in different domains into a single virtual computational platform. In order to fully utilize the capabilities of multicluster grids, computer scientists need to deal with the issue of joining together participating autonomic systems practically and efficiently to execute grid-enabled applications. Driven by several compute-intensive applications, this theses develops a multicluster grid management toolkit called Pelecanus to bridge the gap between user's needs and the system's heterogeneity. Application scientists will be able to conduct very large-scale …
