Plurigaussian Simulation Of Rocktypes Using Data From A Gold Mine In Western Australia, Robin Dunn
Plurigaussian Simulation Of Rocktypes Using Data From A Gold Mine In Western Australia, Robin Dunn
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Stochastic simulation of rocktypes, or the geometry of the geology, is a major area of continuing research as earth scientists seek a better understanding of an orebody as a precursor to the assignment of continuous rock properties, allowing more economically appropriate decisions regarding mine planning. This thesis analyses the suitability of particular geostatistical rock type modelling algorithms when applied to the five rocktypes evident in drill hole data from the Big Bell gold mine near Cue, Western Australia. The background of the geostatistical theory is considered, in particular the concept of the random function model and the link between the …
Vibration Diagnosis Of Elastic Shafts With A Transverse Crack, Cai Zhongyi
Vibration Diagnosis Of Elastic Shafts With A Transverse Crack, Cai Zhongyi
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Detection of the shaft crack in a rotating machine is one of the most challenging problems in equipment predictive maintenance. In the available literature, various crack detection methods have been applied to study the dynamic behaviour of a cracked shaft. This study sought to attempt a vibration-based method. Elastic shafts with three different types of transverse cracks, including experimentally-induced fatigue crack, welded shaft crack, and wire-cut crack, were fabricated, and used to analyse the bending stiffness and frequency response in the vertical direction. The results from the cracked shafts were compared with that of an intact shaft. Bending stiffness of …
Model Based Test Suite Minimization Using Metaheuristics, Usman Farooq
Model Based Test Suite Minimization Using Metaheuristics, Usman Farooq
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Software testing is one of the most widely used methods for quality assurance and fault detection purposes. However, it is one of the most expensive, tedious and time consuming activities in software development life cycle. Code-based and specification-based testing has been going on for almost four decades. Model-based testing (MBT) is a relatively new approach to software testing where the software models as opposed to other artifacts (i.e. source code) are used as primary source of test cases. Models are simplified representation of a software system and are cheaper to execute than the original or deployed system. The main objective …

Systemic Problems Related To Multiple Stakeholders In Technology Adoption And Use In Organizations : A Systems Thinking Perspective, Syed A. Raza
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Understanding and creating the conditions under which information systems will be embraced by human organizations (thinking systems) remain high-priority research issues. Despite numerous benefits associated with information technology (IT), implementing an information system (IS) in organizational environment is challenging. The literature reports numerous IS project failures. During IS implementation, several factors impede technology’s widespread adoption and use in organizations. These organizational problems often result from such barriers or ‘systemic problems’. The proposed work is based on the argument that addressing ‘systemic problems’ can reduce barriers to organizational progress. Most of the IS/IT adoption theories (e.g. TAM, UTAUT, TAM2 and TAM3) …
Adapting To Change: An Exploration Of Students' Transition Experiences In A Senior College In Western Australia, Linda Rogerson
Adapting To Change: An Exploration Of Students' Transition Experiences In A Senior College In Western Australia, Linda Rogerson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research sought to explore the experiences of students during their transition to a senior college. The senior college was established in response to the amendments to education policy in Western Australia that made it compulsory for students to remain in full-time education, training or employment until the age of 17 years (Department of Education and Training, 2008). Senior colleges were established to teach Years 11 and 12 exclusively, to promote a school environment that suited the maturity of senior students. Students attending senior colleges experience an additional transition during their senior school years and, as previous research has shown, …

Using Growth Rate Of Reading Fluency To Predict Performance On Statewide Achievement Tests, Rachelle Whittaker Hinkle
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Federal legislation has prescribed the increased use of statewide achievement tests as the culmination of a student's knowledge and ability at the end of a grade level; however, schools need to be able to predict those who are at-risk of performing poorly on these high-stakes tests. Three studies served to identify a means of predicting statewide achievement test scores in either third or eighth grade based on CBM reading scores and rates of improvement at first, second, and third grades or third, fourth, and fifth grades using readily available statistical procedures. One-half of the third-grade data was used in Study …
The Influence Of Neuroticism On Stress Perception And Its Resultant Negative Affect, Irum Saeed Abbasi
The Influence Of Neuroticism On Stress Perception And Its Resultant Negative Affect, Irum Saeed Abbasi
Master's Theses
There is contemporary literature reporting the role of the neuroticism (N) personality type in the stress process. People with elevated neuroticism experience more interpersonal stressors, perceive daily events as more negative, and use maladaptive ways to combat stressors. This thesis explores the influence of neuroticism on stress perception and the associated negative affect. In the current study, mood and stress perception of pre-screened college students who scored high and low on the neuroticism subscale were manipulated, with a laboratory psycho-social stressor, after their moods were initially neutralized to their respective base levels. Later, their mood and stress perception were manipulated …

Scalable Cooperative Caching Algorithm Based On Bloom Filters, Nodirjon Siddikov
Scalable Cooperative Caching Algorithm Based On Bloom Filters, Nodirjon Siddikov
Theses
This thesis presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a novel cooperative caching algorithm based on the bloom filter data structure. The new algorithm uses a decentralized approach to resolve the problems that prevent the existing solutions from being scalable. The problems consist of an overloaded manager, a communication overhead among clients, and a memory overhead on the global cache. The new solution reduces the manager load and the communication overhead by distributing the global cache information among cooperating clients. Thus, the manager no longer maintains the global cache. Furthermore, the memory overhead is decreased due to a bloom filter …
Balancing Truth Error And Manual Processing In The Pdq System, Douglass Huang
Balancing Truth Error And Manual Processing In The Pdq System, Douglass Huang
Theses
Production Data Quality (PDQ) is a specialized pattern classifier whose main purpose is to assess independently the data quality of a production classifier. It accomplishes this by producing a high quality Truth from the source input, and then using the Truth to identify errors in the production classifier's output data. Previous studies have shown close agreement between PDQ processing outcomes and a particular mathematical model of the system. In this study we describe and analyze an expanded model that addresses the potential tradeoff between Truth error and manual processing in PDQ, with an eye towards informing operational decisions about precision …

Mechanical Behavior Of Fully Expanded Commercially Available Endovascular Coronary Stents, Josip Tambaca, Suncica Canic, Mate Kosor, R David Fish, David Paniagua
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
The mechanical behavior of endovascular coronary stents influences their therapeutic efficacy. Through computational studies, researchers can analyze device performance and improve designs. We developed a 1-dimensional finite element method, net-based algorithm and used it to analyze the effects of radial loading and bending in commercially available stents. Our computational study included designs modeled on the Express, Cypher, Xience, and Palmaz stents.
We found that stents that did not fully expand were less rigid than the fully expanded stents and, therefore, exhibited larger displacement. Stents with an open-cell design, such as Express-like or Xience-like stents, had a higher bending flexibility. Stents …

Central Venous Pressure And Pulmonary Capillary Wedge Pressure, Tony S Ma, Biykem Bozkurt, David Paniagua, Biswajit Kar, Kumudha Ramasubbu, Carl F Rothe
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
Heart-failure phenotypes include pulmonary and systemic venous congestion. Traditional heart-failure classification systems include the Forrester hemodynamic subsets, which use 2 indices: pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) and cardiac index. We hypothesized that changes in PCWP and central venous pressure (CVP), and in the phenotypes of heart failure, might be better evaluated by cardiovascular modeling. Therefore, we developed a lumped-parameter cardiovascular model and analyzed forms of heart failure in which the right and left ventricles failed disproportionately (discordant ventricular failure) versus equally (concordant failure). At least 10 modeling analyses were carried out to the equilibrium state. Acute discordant pump failure was …
The Willingness To Pay—Willingness To Accept Gap, The "Endowment Effect," Subject Misconceptions, And Experimental Procedures For Eliciting Valuations: Reply, Charles R. Plott, Kathryn Zeiler
The Willingness To Pay—Willingness To Accept Gap, The "Endowment Effect," Subject Misconceptions, And Experimental Procedures For Eliciting Valuations: Reply, Charles R. Plott, Kathryn Zeiler
Faculty Scholarship
The purpose of Plott and Zeiler (2005) — henceforth, PZ — was to investigate whether previously published experiments using consumption goods such as mugs and candy bars to measure gaps between willingness to pay (WTP) and willingness- to-accept (WTA) support endowment effect theory (EET). Our results demonstrate that the gap for commodities can be turned on and off by implementing procedures designed to control for subject misconceptions about the value elicitation procedures. Following experiments traditionally used to demonstrate the endowment effect, we used mug valuations to test EET. We used lottery rounds only to provide our subjects with paid practice …
Tourism, Persistence, And Change: Sherpa Spirituality And Place In Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) National Park And Buffer Zone, Nepal, Jeremy Spoon
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Ecotourism and cultural tourism are emerging as vehicles for many of the world’s indigenous peoples to integrate into the global market economy. The ecological knowledge and understanding of these societies may in turn be affected by these nascent industries. As part of shifting human-environment relationships, tourism can influence place-based spirituality. In this manuscript, I describe research on how tourism affected Khumbu Sherpa place-based spiritual values in Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park and Buffer Zone, Nepal. As Tibetan Buddhists, the Sherpa embodied dual overlapping conceptions of sacred landscape that connected people to place in some environmentally sustainable ways. Since the 1960s, …

Can Salmonids (Oncorhynchus Spp.) Be Identified To Species Using Vertebral Morphometrics?, Harriet R. Huber, Jeffery C. Jorgensen, Virginia L. Butler, Greg Baker, Rebecca Stevens
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Remains of anadromous Pacific salmon and trout (genus Oncorhynchus) are common in archaeological sites from California to Alaska; however, morphological similarity generally precludes species identification, limiting the range of questions that salmonid remains can address in relation to past human use and ongoing efforts in conservation biology. We developed a relatively simple, rapid, and non-destructive way to classify salmon and trout vertebrae from archaeological contexts to species using length, height and the ratio of length to height. Modern reference material was obtained from all seven anadromous Oncorhynchus species native to the west coast of North America. A minimum of ten …
Fragility Analysis Of Building Envelope Components Subject To Windborne Debris Impact Hazard, Alexander Henry Herbin
Fragility Analysis Of Building Envelope Components Subject To Windborne Debris Impact Hazard, Alexander Henry Herbin
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis presents a methodology for developing windborne debris (WBD) impact fragility curves for building envelope components (BECs) by using stochastic finite element (FE) models. These fragility curves provide the probabilistic description of the impact resistance of BECs subject to an impact event described by an appropriate intensity measure (IM). Accurate fragility curves are essential in the development of a general probabilistic performance-based engineering framework for mitigation of WBD impact hazard. Monte Carlo simulation is used in combination with the FE method to propagate uncertainties in the BEC’s model parameters and WBD impact location. As an application example, the fragility …
A Multifaceted Phenomenon Of Hydrophobic Effects: Insights Learned From Nucleation Algorithm Based Computer Simulation Approach, Hyunmi Kim
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We have applied our new approach, a combination of the AVUS-HR nucleation algorithm and a thermodynamic cycle, to the studies of hydrophobicity-related researches. Due to the multifaceted characteristics of hydrophobicity, it is essential to acquire knowledge in various environments where hydrophobic relevant events occur for comprehensive understanding of this process. In this regards, we have chosen two relatively unstudied hydrophobic subjects for application of our new methodology. For the first subject, hydrophobic association behaviors of a methane pair confined into a nanometer sized hydrophobic cavity have been investigated. Our new approach demonstrates that the association behavior between two methane molecules …

Corporate Governance Reform For The 21st Century: A Critical Reassessment Of The Shareholder Primacy Model, Carol Liao
Corporate Governance Reform For The 21st Century: A Critical Reassessment Of The Shareholder Primacy Model, Carol Liao
All Faculty Publications
This article questions the efficiency of the shareholder primacy model of corporate governance in light of the financial calamities that have plagued the first decade of the 21st century. Reform efforts following the global financial crisis have focused on failures in securities regulation, but that is only part of the story. Effective reform measures must also address the legal and normative prescriptions found within existing governance structures, and the collateral effect those prescriptions have on political and regulatory inaction.
There was strong ideological support for the shareholder primacy model at the start of the century. Following the corporate and accounting …
Applying The Rasch Model To Measure And Compare First- Generation And Continuing-Generation College Students’ Academic Self-Efficacy, Nichole Marie Knutson
Applying The Rasch Model To Measure And Compare First- Generation And Continuing-Generation College Students’ Academic Self-Efficacy, Nichole Marie Knutson
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation
Students who are the first in their families to attend college are less likely to earn a college degree as compared to their continuing-generation peers. In efforts to increase college graduation rates for first-generation college students, support programs designed to assist first-generation college students are increasing in numbers. These first- generation programs are relying on existing research to build effective curriculums. Even though an extensive body of literature exists in the fields of self-efficacy and first- generation college students, research investigating the self-efficacy of first-generation college students are extremely limited. The research is further limited when examining academic self-efficacy and …

Economics Of U.S. Government Debt Accumulation, Carlos Ignacio Garcia Jimenez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The United States of America is an indebted nation in the early years of the new millennium, changing from $469 billion in 1973 to $14 trillion in 2010, as spending is justified on the basis that it promotes GDP growth which in turn increases societal benefits. Despite the benefits of debt, its effectiveness and the transmission mechanisms of fiscal policy are still on debate. Consequently, the economic effects of U.S. government debt accumulation are studied in three empirical research articles.
The dissertation is composed of five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction wherein the problem statement, the purpose, objectives …

Developmental Responses To Abiotic Conditions During Aquatic And Air Incubatoin Of The Gulf Killifish (Fundulus Grandis): Subtitle, Charles Alexander Brown
LSU Master's Theses
The Gulf killifish (Fundulus grandis) is a topminnow native to the tidal marshes of the Gulf of Mexico. The species is prized by anglers as effective bait for catching popular sportfish and is of interest to aquaculturists and bait dealers due to its hardy nature. Limited seasonal availability and aquaculture of this species due to low fecundity and larval cannibalism of fry has led to increased incentive to improve cultural techniques. The purpose of this study is to determine the influences of temperature, salinity, and air incubation on embryogenesis of the Gulf killifish. Temperature was found to have a negative …
