The Role Of Olfactory Cues In The Sequential Radiation Of A Gall-Boring Beetle, Bradley Rhodes
The Role Of Olfactory Cues In The Sequential Radiation Of A Gall-Boring Beetle, Bradley Rhodes
Master’s Theses
Species diversity itself may cause additional species diversity. According to recent findings, some species modify their environment in such a way that they facilitate the creation of new niches for other species to evolve to fill. Given the vast speciesdiversity of insects, the occurrence of such sequential radiation of species is likely common among herbivorous insects and the species that depend on them, many of them being insects as well. Herbivorous insects often have close associations with specific host plants and their preferences for mating and ovipositing on a specific host-plant species can reproductively isolate host-specific populations, facilitating speciation. The Relationship Between Parenting Styles, Learning Autonomy, And Scholastic Achievement In Undergraduate College Students, Meghan L. Starr
The Relationship Between Parenting Styles, Learning Autonomy, And Scholastic Achievement In Undergraduate College Students, Meghan L. Starr
Master’s Theses
Throughout the years, the role that parents play with regard to a child’s academic achievement has been the source of considerable research. The type of parenting style employed by parents, whether it is authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive, has and continues to be a major theme in these studies. One area of particular interest that has been overlooked in these studies, however, is the influence that parents may have on a student’s learning autonomy. Learning autonomy is the idea that a student has internal motivation to learn or achieve. The purpose of this study was to investigate therelationship among the three …

A Characterization Of Connected (1,2)-Domination Graphs Of Tournaments, Kim A. S. Factor, Larry J. Langley
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Recently. Hedetniemi et aI. introduced (1,2)-domination in graphs, and the authors extended that concept to (1, 2)-domination graphs of digraphs. Given vertices x and y in a digraph D, x and y form a (1,2)-dominating pair if and only if for every other vertex z in D, z is one step away from x or y and at most two steps away from the other. The (1,2)-dominating graph of D, dom1,2 (D), is defined to be the graph G = (V, E ) , where V (G) = V (D), and xy is …

Reading Dialogically : A Bakhtinian Approach To Interpreting Elijah, Mark Hoehner
Reading Dialogically : A Bakhtinian Approach To Interpreting Elijah, Mark Hoehner
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
In this introduction, we will explore the great debate about the proper interpretation of textual characters within the past century, as well as the presuppositions that led to certain interpretations of textual characters. 3 We will also see how narrative-critical approaches have influenced the interpretation of Old Testament characters since Auerbach’s 1947 work. This will set the stage for showing that Mikhail Bakhtin’s dialogic approach is a valuable contribution to the great debate over how to interpret textual characters, specifically the characters found in Old Testament narratives.

Nonlinear Behaviour Of Sea Surface Waves Based On Low-Gradient Phase-Only Scattering Effects, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney
Nonlinear Behaviour Of Sea Surface Waves Based On Low-Gradient Phase-Only Scattering Effects, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney
Conference papers
Nonlinear sea waves generated by the wind, including freak waves, are considered to be phenomena that can be modelled using the nonlinear (cubic) Schrodinger equation, for example. However, there is a problem with this approach which is that sea surface waves, driven by wind speeds of varying strength, must be considered to be composed of two distinct types, namely, linear waves and nonlinear waves. In this paper, we consider a different approach to modelling ‘nonlinear’ waves that is based on a solution to the linear wave equation under a low-gradient, phase-only condition. This approach is entirely compatible with the fluid …

The 6 September 2009 Mw5.4 Earthquake In Eastern Albania – Fyrom Border: Focal Mechanisms, Slip Model, Shakemap, Anastasia Kiratzi
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
On 6 September 2009 (GMT 21:49) a moderate Mw5.4 earthquake sequence burst at the eastern border of Albania with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). The main shock was located ~6 km north of the epicentre of the 30 November 1967 Mw6.2 Dibra (or Debar) earthquake, which caused loss of life and considerable damage to buildings. We use broad band waveforms recorded by the Hellenic Unified Seismic Network (HUSN), which receives real-time waveforms from the neighbouring networks, to compute focal mechanisms, obtain the slip model and derive the Shake Map of the mainshock. The focal mechanisms of 18 of …

Upscaling Carbon Fluxes Over The Great Plains Grasslands: Sinks And Sources, Li Zhang, Bruce K. Wylie, Lei Ji, Tagir G. Gilmanov, Larry L. Tieszen, Daniel M. Howard
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
Previous studies suggested that the grasslands may be carbon sinks or near equilibrium, and they often shift between carbon sources in drought years and carbon sinks in other years. It is important to understand the responses of net ecosystem production (NEP) to various climatic conditions across the U.S. Great Plains grasslands. Based on 15 grassland flux towers, we developed a piecewise regression model and mapped the grassland NEP at 250 m spatial resolution over the Great Plains from 2000 to 2008. The results showed that the Great Plains was a net sink with an averaged annual NEP of 24 ± …

Social Discourse Of Literature Circles With A Focus On Gender, Laurie Hornor
Social Discourse Of Literature Circles With A Focus On Gender, Laurie Hornor
Graduate Research Papers
This research study examined the social discourse of literature circles with a focus on gender within a fifth-grade regular education classroom. The researcher examined the nature of social discourse that was held by students and examined whether gender appeared to influence social discourse. The results from this study showed that gender did have an impact on how students responded to literature within discussion groups. Two main gender-related characteristics of the discussions were noted. The first characteristic was that males and females did hold beliefs that paralleled culturally-determined gender roles. These beliefs had an impact on how students responded to literature. …

Teaching students how to read, comprehend,. and enjoy text are goals that many teachers make in their classrooms each year. Yet, the biggest challenge that goes along with these goals is often student motivation. Motivating students happens in many forms in classrooms around the world. There are research-based techniques for males and females, English speaking and English language learners, each of the multiple intelligences, and overall individual student needs. There is no one proven catchall method for motivating students in the classroom. Instead, teachers are encouraged to find the motivation strategies and techniques that work for specific individuals. This paper …

Habeas, Informational Asymmetries, And The War On Terror, Marc D. Falkoff
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Although most American lawyers and legal scholars are primarily familiar with habeas corpus in the context of federal review of state convictions, habeas petitions have been used to challenge detention by the executive branch in a variety of non-criminal contexts, such as immigration or national security. In this Article, we offer a two-part justification of a robust habeas procedure in non-criminal contexts. First, building upon insights drawn from contract theory, we argue that habeas corpus review has an information-forcing function. In our account, one of the crucial benefits of habeas review in non-criminal contexts is that it is often the …

Tiling is a key program transformation to achieve effective data reuse. But the performance of tiled programs can vary considerably with different tile sizes. Hence the selection of good tile sizes is crucial. Although there has been considerable research on analytical models for selecting tile sizes, they have not been shown to be effective in finding optimal tile sizes across a range of programs and target architectures. Auto-tuning is a viable alternative that is often used in practice, and involves the execution of different combinations of tile sizes in a systematic fashion to find the best ones. But this is …

Abundance And Stomach Content Analysis Of Threadfin Shad In Lake Mead, Nevada: Do Invasive Quagga Mussels Affect This Prey Species?, Eric Michael Loomis, Jon C. Sjoberg, Wai Hing Wong, Shawn Gerstenberger
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
Lake Mead, Nevada is the largest reservoir by volume in the United States, as well as a popular sport fishing destination. In January 2007, the invasive quagga mussel Dreissena rostriformis bugensis (Andrusov, 1897) was discovered in the reservoir and concerns began to arise about potential alterations to the aquatic environment. The Lake Mead sport fishery is reliant on the sustainability of prey species like the threadfin shad [Dorosoma petenense (Günther, 1867)]. This study examined 20-year trends in historic abundance of the threadfin shad, before, and shortly after, the discovery of quagga mussels in the system. Larval shad trawl data collected …

One approach to promoting successful engagement of underrepresented groups in mathematics classrooms is Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP). However, it has been argued that CRP risks essentializing students or watering down academic content. We report our analysis of a case study of a group of three 6th grade students who took part in a 6-week mathematics curriculum. This curriculum used Geographical Information System (GIS) maps to engage students in designing personally meaningful research projects while learning about measures of central tendency (i.e., learning statistics). The case study was chosen as representative of how students in this urban classroom (47 total) successfully …

The frequency of ADHD in the aging population and its relationship to late-life cognitive decline has not been studied previously. To address this gap in our understanding, the Wender-Utah ADHD Rating scale (WURS) was administered to 310 geriatric subjects with cognitive status ranging from normal cognition to mild cognitive impairment to overt dementia. The frequency of WURS-positive ADHD in this sample was 4.4%. WURS scores were not related to cognitive diagnoses, but did show nonlinear associations with tasks requiring sustained attention. The frequency of ADHD appears stable across generations and does not appear to be associated with MCI or dementia …

Interface Dynamics And Far-From-Equilibrium Phase Transitions In Multilayer Epitaxial Growth And Erosion On Crystal Surfaces: Continuum Theory Insights, Leonardo Golubović, Artem Levandovsky, Dorel Moldovan
Faculty Publications
We review recent theoretical progress in the physical understanding of far-from-equilibrium phenomena seen experimentally in epitaxial growth and erosion on crystal surfaces. The formation and dynamics of various interface structures (pyramids, ripples, etc.), and also kinetic phase transitions observed between these structures, can all be understood within a simple continuum model based on the mass conservation law and respecting the symmetries of the growing crystal surface. In particular, theoretical predictions and experimental results are compared for (001), (110) and (111) crystal surfaces. © 2011 Global-Science Press.

Improving Simulations Of The Upper Ocean By Inclusion Of Surface Waves In The Mellor-Yamada Turbulence Scheme, Chuan Jiang Huang, Fangli Qiao, Zhenya Song, Tal Ezer
CCPO Publications
The Mellor-Yamada turbulence closure scheme, used in many ocean circulation models, is often blamed for overly high simulated surface temperature and overly low simulated subsurface temperature in summer due to insufficient vertical mixing. Surface waves can enhance turbulence kinetic energy and mixing of the upper ocean via wave breaking and nonbreaking-wave-turbulence interaction. The influences of wave breaking and wave-turbulence interaction on the Mellor-Yamada scheme and upper ocean thermal structure are examined and compared with each other using one-dimensional and three-dimensional ocean circulation models. Model results show that the wave-turbulence interaction can effectively amend the problem of insufficient mixing in the …
