Teaching For Global Learning Through Telecollaboration: A Case Study Of K-12 Educators' Conceptualizations And Practices About Global Education, Holly Gooding Oran Oct 2011

Teaching For Global Learning Through Telecollaboration: A Case Study Of K-12 Educators' Conceptualizations And Practices About Global Education, Holly Gooding Oran

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

A plethora of literature discusses the flattening of the world we live in (Friedman, 2007) and the need for teachers to educate K-12 students for global learning. However, the literature is critically lacking in empirical evidence in how this is to take place in classrooms. In addition, existing empirical studies have focused primarily on American social studies educators at the secondary school level. Scholars differ in their own understanding of what global education means and should look like in schools, how teachers are to incorporate it into their curriculum, and how it benefits K-12 learners. The purpose of the present …

The Comparative Effects Of Two Types Of Photographic Visual Supports On The Acquisition Of Independent Performance Of Multi-Step Tasks By Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cindy Denise Golden

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

This study uses a single subject adapted alternating treatment design to examine the comparative effects of two types of visual supports. Photographic visual supports that depict only the materials in the completed step and photographic visual supports that depict the student using the materials to complete each step were examined as to their comparative efficiency on the acquisition of independent performance of multi-step tasks by students with autism. The study expands the body of literature and fills a gap in the research of visual supports, which is one of the most widely accepted, research-based forms of intervention used with subjects …

A Critical Examination Of The Relationship Between Student Performances On Assessments Of English Language Proficiency And Academic Achievement, Margaret E. D. Baker

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

To comply with federal accountability requirements, English learners (ELs) in Georgia must demonstrate progress in academic English language proficiency (ELP) and academic content-area achievement as measured annually by two state-mandated Title I and Title III assessments, the Accessing Communication and Comprehension in English State-to-State for English Language Learners® (ACCESS for ELLs®) and the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). Using a critical ELP assessment validation framework, the intent of this study was to investigate the relationship of students’ performances on Title assessments, analyze student level variability in the predictive power of the ELP assessment for academic achievement, and examine claims made when …

Cultural Intersections: White Teachers And Their Racial Minority Students, Jason Pritchett Oct 2011

Cultural Intersections: White Teachers And Their Racial Minority Students, Jason Pritchett

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Racial minority students in American public schools learn in environments that are antithetical to their cultural and familial backgrounds. Because the majority of the teacher workforce is comprised of white teachers, the institution of school places racial minority students at risk. These students drop out or are labeled as failures at alarming rates. This qualitative study explored the teaching behaviors of white veteran teachers through a design that mixed both multicase study and autoethnography. The data sources for this study included interviews, focus groups, teacher journals, and teacher-authored documents. The data in this study was member checked and peer reviewed …

Decision Support Systems For Strategic Dispute Resolution, Anurag Agarwal, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Vaidyanathan Jayaraman Oct 2011

Decision Support Systems For Strategic Dispute Resolution, Anurag Agarwal, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Vaidyanathan Jayaraman

Faculty Articles

Disputes and lawsuits are quite common in business and are often a source of significant liabilities. We conjecture that measurement challenges and lack of adequate analysis tools have greatly inhibited the ability of the General Counsel's offices in selecting the best mode for the resolution (i.e. litigation vs. out-of-court settlement) of business conflicts and disputes. Easily quantified direct costs (e.g., out-of-pocket expenses related to pursuing and defending against litigation) tend to be considered, whereas the more difficult-to-quantify indirect risks and costs (e.g., damaged relationships with customers and potential alliance partners, including reputational harm) which may be quite significant, tend to …

An Exploration Of Virtual Study Groups Used To Prepare Candidates For A Professional Certification Exam, Sharon Katherine Kayne Chaplock Oct 2011

An Exploration Of Virtual Study Groups Used To Prepare Candidates For A Professional Certification Exam, Sharon Katherine Kayne Chaplock

Dissertations (1934 -)

Professional credentials earned through certification programs are becoming an important way to demonstrate competency within a given discipline. With the globalization of business enterprises and associations, these credentials are eagerly sought by people located throughout the world. Candidates for these credentials often study together using virtual environments to prepare for a certification exam. Through a qualitative analysis of interviews with persons participating in such virtual groups, this study investigates what influences their choices among web-enabled study groups, what perceptions characterize their conception of a good virtual study group, and what limitations are encountered in a virtual study environment. This dissertation …

A Want Of News In An Occupied Zone: Newspaper Content In Occupied Lille, Roubaix, And Tourcoing, Candice Addie Quinn Oct 2011

A Want Of News In An Occupied Zone: Newspaper Content In Occupied Lille, Roubaix, And Tourcoing, Candice Addie Quinn

Dissertations (1934 -)

The purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain exactly what news people in the occupied zone of France received during the First World War, in an attempt to assess the general assumption that the people of occupied France received little to no news. It is certain that the people in the occupied cities of Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcoing received less news than before the occupation, and most of the news they did receive came from an untrusted source, namely the German occupiers. However, research for this dissertation reveals that the cities at the urban heart of northern France, Lille, Roubaix, …

Talk About Talking About Constitutional Law, Adam M. Samaha Oct 2011

Talk About Talking About Constitutional Law, Adam M. Samaha

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Constitutional theory branches into decision theory and discourse theory. The former concentrates on how constitutional decisions are or should be made, the latter on how constitutional issues are or should be discussed. For its part, originalism began as a method for resolving constitutional disagreement but it has migrated into discourse theory, as well. Jack Balkin’s “living originalism” illustrates the move. This essay examines inclusive versions of originalism like Balkin’s that permit many different answers to constitutional questions. The essay then suggests pathologies associated with loose constitutional discourse in general. For instance, a large domain for constitutional discourse can crowd out …

The Development Of A Neonatal Communication Intervention Tool, Esedra Strasheim, Alta Kritzinger, Brenda Louw Oct 2011

The Development Of A Neonatal Communication Intervention Tool, Esedra Strasheim, Alta Kritzinger, Brenda Louw

ETSU Faculty Works

Neonatal communication intervention is important in South Africa, which has an increased prevalence of infants born with risks for disabilities and where the majority of infants live in poverty. Local literature showed a dearth of information on the current service delivery and roles of speech-language therapists (SLTs) and audiologists in neonatal nurseries in the South African context. SLTs have the opportunity to provide the earliest intervention, provided that intervention is well-timed in the neonatal nursery context. The aim of the research was to compile a locally relevant neonatal communication intervention instrument/tool for use by SLTs in neonatal nurseries of public …

Theme: Mobile Language Learning, Glenn Stockwell, Susana Sotillo

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

There has been increased interest in portable technologies which allow learners to access tools for learning languages in virtually any time or place that suits them. The quickly developing functionalities of mobile phones, MP3 players, laptop and tablet computers, and other hand-held devices with touch screen technology mean that the range of possibilities for language learning has greatly diversified. GodwinJones (2011), for example, points out that iPhone and Android phones have ushered in a phenomenal expansion in the development of Apps for just about every topic under the sun, and educators have been exploring the value of Apps for learning …

When Bodily Injury Limits Are Stacked, Jurisprudential Consistency Topples, Kevin P. Clark, Chris Vanderbeek Oct 2011

When Bodily Injury Limits Are Stacked, Jurisprudential Consistency Topples, Kevin P. Clark, Chris Vanderbeek

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Automobile insurance policies have three main types of liability coverage: bodily injury (BI), uninsured motorist (UM), and underinsured motorist (UIM).  When an insurance policy pertains to multiple vehicles and one of them is involved in an accident, often there becomes a question of how much coverage the insured should be provided – the limits for all the insured vehicles or merely the limits for the involved vehicle?  This Article explains what the answer should be where BI coverage is invoked, and why recent decisions from Illinois’ Fifth District Court of Appeals necessitate intervention by the Illinois Supreme Court.

American Circus Re-Invented: Queering Cirque Du Soleil, Michael Johnson, Jr. Oct 2011

American Circus Re-Invented: Queering Cirque Du Soleil, Michael Johnson, Jr.

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

During Cirque Du Soleil’s twenty-six years, Cirque has challenged the traditional concept of the circus as American’s have come to understand it, by delivering entertainment and spectacle that dramatically differs from circuses like those organized by memorable pioneers P.T. Barnum & Bailey©, or Ringling Brothers© whose roots are found in the earliest history of the circus. The distinguishing hallmark of all Cirque Du Soleil performances is the notable absence of these traditional circus characteristics, supplanted with theatricality, conceptually distinct musical scores, colorful architectural backgrounds, aerial and perpendicular acrobatics, stylized choreography, puppetry and martial arts. The artistic vision promulgated …

Review Of Bourdieu, Language And The Media, By John Myles, Mark Beachill Oct 2011

Review Of Bourdieu, Language And The Media, By John Myles, Mark Beachill

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

John Myles’ Bourdieu, Language and the Media is a comprehensive argument for media and communication studies to fully engage with the late Pierre Bourdieu’s views on language. While Bourdieu is influential in these academic disciplines, Myles convincingly puts the case that there has been an “overplay” of Bourdieu’s concept of field in the concentration on how media and journalism are structured, but avoidance of using Bourdieu’s analysis of how media and journalism relate to language and the “symbolic violence” enacted through language. Myles tackles criticisms of Bourdieu in the various linguistic/socio-linguistic schools in a constructive engagement requiring a …

The implementation of a robust community based participatory research (CBPR) study in Multnomah County, Oregon, has detailed broad and deep racial disparities across 27 institutions and systems. The process of this research has led to the identification of numerous practices that misrepresent and negate the experiences and very identity of communities of color. The research draws from engagement with numerous databases from the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and various administrative databases. The core issues at hand are population undercounts, understudy of the unique characteristics of these communities, inaccuracies in …

Grammatical Morphology In School-Age Children With And Without Language Impairment: A Discriminant Function Analysis, Maura Jones Moyle, Susan Ellis Weismer, Brenda K. Gorman

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test Bedore and Leonard's (1998) proposal that a verb morpheme composite may hold promise as a clinical marker for specific language impairment (SLI) in English speakers and serve as an accurate basis for the classification of children with and without SLI beyond the preschool level.

Method: The language transcripts of 50 school-age children with SLI (Mage = 7;9 [years;months]) and 50 age-matched typically developing peers (Mage = 7;9) were analyzed. Following the Bedore and Leonard (1998) procedure, 3 variables were measured: a finite verb morpheme composite, a noun …

Myths, Emily Zeller Oct 2011

Myths, Emily Zeller

Theses

In this thesis I address a personal relationship with nature, femininity, and coming-of-age in a patriarchal family through videos that rely on a synthesized definition of myth to create multi-layered meaning with roots in the greater feminine discourse. I create my own unique interpretation of myth by combining elements of traditional Greek mythology, semiotic mythology, and the art and poems centered around the myth of the female experience. Imbuing my videos with this mythic quality allows the objects and actions depicted to transcend their signifiers, birthing multi-layered meaning and encouraging a closer examination and personal connection with the viewer. My …
