Not All One-Letter Words Are Palindromes, T.A. Hall Nov 2011

Not All One-Letter Words Are Palindromes, T.A. Hall

Word Ways

Virtually any discussion of palindromes - regardless of the source - reveals a complete lack of interest in small words. In particular, one will rarely encounter a list of one-letter palindromes, presumably because that type of word should be palindromic by any definition. While this is clearly the case for the most common, garden-variety examples (e.g. A, I, O etc.) the naive view will have us believe that one-letter words with an adjacent apostrophe -typically contracted words in English - should be palindromes as well.

Mnemonics In Second Language Acquisition, Ghil'ad Zuckermann

Word Ways

When my son Giulio Xingtian Yehuda Zuckermann, a.k.a. Giulio XYZ, was 2 years old he already knew the Israeli word for 'fish' : DAG. Due to the general tendency towards final devoicing (see, for example, German kind, pronounced kint, or a German immigrant to Israel pronouncing Negev as Negef), Giulio often pronounced DAG as DAK.

On April 20, 2010, the Macondo oil well ruptured during the final phases of exploratory drilling. Methane gas and other substances spewed from the well onto the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform causing an explosion and fire that killed eleven crewmen and ultimately sank the platform. Over the next three months, the well, located approximately 250 miles southeast of Houston, Texas, spilled as much as 184 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. In the aftermath, the U.S. government banned deepwater drilling for several months while applicable regulations were toughened.

The well’s majority owner was BP PLC, formerly known …

A 2011 International Shorten Vision Of The History And Philosophy Of Andragogy, John Henschke Nov 2011

A 2011 International Shorten Vision Of The History And Philosophy Of Andragogy, John Henschke

Adult Education Faculty Works

This updated History and Philosophy of Andragogy is mainly limited [with a few exceptions] to a chronological history and the accompanying philosophy of andragogy, in line with when the English language documents were published and personal descriptions of events were recorded. Some of these documents, however, present aspects of the events and ideas which recount the years and contexts prior to the time in which they appeared in published form. To date, nearly 400 documents have been discovered, but space limitations in this paper allowed the inclusion of only a fraction of that number. Each of 14 time periods are …

Organizational Apologies: Bp As A Case Study, Erin O'Hara O'Connor

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article examines the conduct of BP executives in the weeks following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to illuminate the use of apology by organizations. After briefly describing the value of apology and its nuances from an evolutionary perspective, the Article describes how apology and other responsibility-accepting behaviors can be mobilized by organizations to avoid the costs of its apparently careless conduct. In particular, organizations can designate particular agents as spokespersons who possess the ability to portray a sense of sincerity and regret. Moreover, reconciliation by ingroup members appears to be more common than is reconciliation by outgroup members, likely …

Some Things Are Better Left Not Unsaid: An Exploratory Study Of The Communicatively-Restricted Organizational Stressor, Justin P. Boren, Alice E. Veksler

Communication

In organizations, individuals seek the support of others to manage their day-to-day stress. Researchers within a social support paradigm have found that individuals who have communicative outlets to discuss their stressors are healthier psychologically and physiologically. To the extent that those outlets are restricted, individuals may suffer the deleterious effects of stress. Therefore, this manuscript conceptualizes and explores one such stressor, the Communicatively-Restricted Organizational Stressor (CROS). Based on a sample of 405 organizational members, we identified the existence and explicated the nature of this stressor. Results were generally inconclusive. Discussion focused on significant findings and the need for better operationalization …

Hyphenated Identities As A Challenge To Nation-State School Practice?, Edmund T. Hamann, William England Nov 2011

Hyphenated Identities As A Challenge To Nation-State School Practice?, Edmund T. Hamann, William England

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This chapter concludes the edited volume Hyphenated Identities and affords a chance to juxtapose how transnational students negotiate school and identity with how school systems in turn view such students, and then it allows the examination of two different strategies -- situational ethnicity versus the assertion of hyphenated identity -- as a glimpse into the cosmology of transnationally mobile students as they come into adulthood.

Tired Of Talking: A Call For Clear Strategies For Legal Education Reform: Moving Beyond The Discussion Of Good Ideas To The Real Transformation Of Law Schools, Sara K. Rankin Nov 2011

Tired Of Talking: A Call For Clear Strategies For Legal Education Reform: Moving Beyond The Discussion Of Good Ideas To The Real Transformation Of Law Schools, Sara K. Rankin

Seattle Journal for Social Justice

Legal education reform efforts have persisted for over one hundred years, supported by substantive expertise, empirical data, cutting-edge curricula, and effective pedagogy. But today, the normative face of legal education remains essentially unchanged. If the substance behind legal education reform is valid, then what is the problem? This article examines the stasis of legal education through the lens of historical reform efforts, political science, and contemporary organizational change theory. The author argues that legal education reform efforts are marginalized and have limited normative impact because reformers underestimate the strategic demands of systemic change. As a result, reformers have yet to …

Identifying Outliers In Fuzzy Time Series, S. Suresh, K. Senthamarai Kannan Nov 2011

Identifying Outliers In Fuzzy Time Series, S. Suresh, K. Senthamarai Kannan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Time series analysis is often associated with the discovery of patterns and prediction of features. Forecasting accuracy can be improved by removing identified outliers in the data set using the Cook’s distance and Studentized residual test. In this paper a modified fuzzy time series method is proposed based on transition probability vector membership function. It is experimentally shown that the proposed method minimizes the average forecasting error compared with other known existing methods.

Culture, Language, And Gendered Violence In Southern Nevada, Kathleen Ja Sook Bergquist Nov 2011

Culture, Language, And Gendered Violence In Southern Nevada, Kathleen Ja Sook Bergquist

Policy Briefs and Reports

The U.S. Census estimated approximately 25.1% of Nevadans in 2006 to 2008 to be non-white, 27.3% speak English as a second language, and 24.9% Hispanic. The three most commonly spoken languages in Las Vegas are English, Spanish, and Tagalog, reflecting the growing Spanish-speaking and Asian communities in Southern Nevada. Service providers struggle with providing relevant services for these communities, to include addressing gendered violence. This project seeks to further current knowledge about gendered violence in Spanish-speaking and Asian communities, to examine the capacity of local providers, and identify possible linguistic and cultural barriers that may compound education, outreach, and intervention.

Robust Peacekeeping? Panacea For Human Rights Violations, Kofi Nsia-Pepra Nov 2011

Robust Peacekeeping? Panacea For Human Rights Violations, Kofi Nsia-Pepra

Peace and Conflict Studies

This paper examines the conviction that robust peacekeeping—a strong and forceful peacekeeping force—works better than traditional UN peacekeeping mechanisms in reducing human rights violations, specifically, civilian killing, in areas of deployment. I seek to analyze both the operational and internal characteristics of UN peacekeeping operations in an effort to understand the hindrances to achieving the objective of protecting human rights. Specifically, the study examines the contributions of key structural variables, including the mission type, weapon type, rules of engagement, mission strength, and major power participation controlling for other intervening variables using negative binomial and logit regression models. The empirical results …
