Factors Related To Special Education Teacher Job Commitment: A Study Of One Large Metropolitan School District In Southern California, Joseph David Green Jan 2011

Factors Related To Special Education Teacher Job Commitment: A Study Of One Large Metropolitan School District In Southern California, Joseph David Green

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have focused their attention on the subject of special education teacher attrition for many years. While these researchers have made valuable findings, the need to abate the staggering numbers of special education teachers who leave the field still exists. Districts desiring to retain their teachers must place greater emphasis on the development of evidence-based strategies to reduce teacher attrition (Billingsley, 2004). The purposes of this study were to: (a) provide an overview of the extent to which, if at all, perceptions of job commitment among current special education teachers in a large metropolitan school district in Southern California differ …

Exploring The Timing And Depth Of Discussions Of Traumatic Material And The Stages Of Change In Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Lauren A. Desjardins

Theses and Dissertations

Currently, there is a lack of understanding of how the stages of change (SOC) relate to discussion of interpersonal trauma in therapy. This study aimed to explore the timing and depth of trauma discussion (TD) across the course of therapy in relation to SOC. The client in this single-case study was a 28-year-old African American female who recently moved to California and reported difficulties in relationships and work problems. The course of therapy lasted 21 sessions; of the 15 videotaped sessions, 6 contained discussions of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and workplace psychological harassment (WPH). Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC; …

The Journal Project: Written Expression Of Trauma As Intervention For High School Students In Ayacucho, Peru, Shannon J. Curry Jan 2011

The Journal Project: Written Expression Of Trauma As Intervention For High School Students In Ayacucho, Peru, Shannon J. Curry

Theses and Dissertations

This between groups quasi experimental study examined the efficacy of Pennebaker's Written Expression Paradigm (WEP; Pennebaker & Beall, 1986) as a multiculturally responsive therapeutic intervention among Peruvian high school students who grew up in Ayacucho during the Sendero Luminoso's guerilla insurgency. Journaling about prior traumatic experiences eludes many of the cultural and contextual limitations of the traditional Euro therapeutic model; enabling a person to disclose their deepest thoughts and emotions privately, without expense, and at the time and location they choose. It was hypothesized that written expression would be perceived by local participants as less value threatening than traditional psychotherapy, …

Examining The Occurrence Of Verbal And Non-Verbal Positive Emotional Expression During Discussion Of Interpersonal Trauma In Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Whitney A. Dicterow Jan 2011

Examining The Occurrence Of Verbal And Non-Verbal Positive Emotional Expression During Discussion Of Interpersonal Trauma In Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Whitney A. Dicterow

Theses and Dissertations

Recent theories of positive emotion, including the broaden and build theory, propose that positive emotion can broaden one's range of thoughts and actions and build long-lasting personal resources (Folkman & Moskowitz, 2000; Fredrickson & Levenson, 1998). However, little research exists on how positive emotion is expressed in the context of discussing interpersonal trauma in psychotherapy. The current study explored the expression of positive emotion during discussions of interpersonal trauma over the course of an individual case of psychotherapy as related to the broaden and build theory. The client-participant in this single-case study was a 28-year-old African American female who presented …

How Executive Coaches Use The Results Of The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator To Develop Their Coachees, Dave Stachowiak Jan 2011

How Executive Coaches Use The Results Of The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator To Develop Their Coachees, Dave Stachowiak

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored how executive coaches use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to develop coachees. An online survey was administered to screen executive coaches for MBTI certification, coaching hours with executive coachees, percentage of clients with profit and loss responsibilities, and regular use of the MBTI. Of 169 respondents, 31 qualified for the study and 15 executive coaches, primarily from North America, were interviewed to determine what, if any, common practices were used. Interviews were analyzed using a grounded theory methodology to determine if a central phenomenon emerged. The findings overwhelmingly showed the executive coaches use the MBTI to raise …

Politics Of Beauty, Ken-Ichi Sasaki Jan 2011

Politics Of Beauty, Ken-Ichi Sasaki

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

I look back at the history of modern aesthetics to grasp its current situation and to propose its possibilities for the future. The early modern period, during which aesthetics came into being, was a great historical turning point for civilization. Our contemporary period shares this character, and it is worthwhile for us to consult its history in order to reflect on our civilization. Aesthetics began with Baumgarten’s proposal, which consisted in a triple subject: sensibility, beauty, and art. His idea was accepted because it responded to the fundamental problems of the period. Sensibility was the only form of cognition of …

Linguistic Rights Of Indigenous Peoples In The States Of Latin America, Jose Manuel Perez Fernandez Jan 2011

Linguistic Rights Of Indigenous Peoples In The States Of Latin America, Jose Manuel Perez Fernandez

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

The protection of language rights of speakers of indigenous languages has experienced important developments in the Latin American sphere, which has served as a framework for the whole process of recognition of cultural and ethnical identity of Indigenous Peoples. This reflects a rejection of assimilation, and an assertion of multicultural and multilingual aspects in Latin American societies. On the one hand, the author focuses on the role that international law instruments related to human rights, those for the general protection of minorities and those specific for the indigenous peoples, may perform in the recognition of linguistic rights when granting legal …

Stories In Pictures (And Non-Pictorial Objects): A Narratological And Cognitive Psychological Approach, Michael Ranta

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Narratological studies have frequently focused upon linguistic structures, considered to be paradigmatic cases of narrativity, while pictorial signs, such as icons and symbols or indices, have received comparably much less attention. In this paper, however, some basic and regularly occurring narrative aspects of pictures and non-pictorial objects will be presented and discussed.

Research Diary: A Tool For Scaffolding, Marion Engin Jan 2011

Research Diary: A Tool For Scaffolding, Marion Engin

All Works

Diaries have long been seen as tools for reflection in learning languages, and learning about teaching. Despite this recognition of the importance of narratives in diary writing, little attention has been paid to the role of research diaries in the process of learning about research, and learning how to be a researcher. During the author's own research into the construction of teaching knowledge by pre-service trainees, she became aware that her research diary was scaffolding her own construction of research knowledge. In this article the author discusses the role of a research diary based on a socio-cultural theory of learning. …

Attention Deployment During Memorizing And Executing Complex Instructions., Jens K. Apel, Gavin F. Revie, Angelo Cangelosi, Rob Ellis, Jeremy Goslin, Martin H. Fischer

School of Psychology

We investigated the mental rehearsal of complex action instructions by recording spontaneous eye movements of healthy adults as they looked at objects on a monitor. Participants heard consecutive instructions, each of the form "move [object] to [location]". Instructions were only to be executed after a go signal, by manipulating all objects successively with a mouse. Participants re-inspected previously mentioned objects already while listening to further instructions. This rehearsal behavior broke down after 4 instructions, coincident with participants' instruction span, as determined from subsequent execution accuracy. These results suggest that spontaneous eye movements while listening to instructions predict their successful execution.

Ogalala Sioux Tribal Profile, Karen Kimbro Chase Jan 2011

Ogalala Sioux Tribal Profile, Karen Kimbro Chase

Tribal Law Journal

This profile offers an excellent overview of Oglala Sioux law, both traditional and modern. Like many tribes, the Indian Reorganization Act had a major impact on the contemporary law of the Oglala Sioux. While the IRA resulted in tribal constitutions that reflected the values of the U.S. Constitution, this profile examines the traditional and customary law that was subsequently incorporated into the Oglala Sioux Constitution. This profile includes a brief history of the Oglala Sioux, overview of traditional law, governmental structure, summary of contemporary law, and history of political activism.

Literature Meets Biology: An Evolutionary Approach To Literary Studies, Samantha Reneé Dwyer Jan 2011

Literature Meets Biology: An Evolutionary Approach To Literary Studies, Samantha Reneé Dwyer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The following thesis engages with the relatively young development in literary studies, called evocriticism, which uses scientific perspectives to look at literature. It first gives an overview of the current state of English departments and their decline in numbers, budgets, and cultural relevancy, mostly due to outdated modes of literary criticism and theory. It then introduces evocriticism as a new paradigm for studying literature. Literature and the arts are studied as human behaviors with possible adaptive benefits. Individual texts are interpreted through a scientific lens, using the theory of evolution to find cultural and biological human universals that can help …

Examining Construct Stability Across Career Stage Cohorts, Deborah L. Kinney Jan 2011

Examining Construct Stability Across Career Stage Cohorts, Deborah L. Kinney

Online Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate construct stability of the same certification test taken at different points in a test taker's career, taking into account changes is experience over time. A single medical certification exam administration was used to analyze the construct stability of the certification exam across testing cohorts at varied stages in their medical careers. The Rasch model was used for item analysis to calibrate the difficulty hierarchy of the exam items for each cohort. Correlations between the item difficulty hierarchies for each cohort supported the overall construct stability of the certification exam. Individual item function …
