Paradise Lost, Found Or Created? Expectations Between Teachers And Vulnerable Children: Case Study On Peace House Secondary School, Northern Tanzania, Kelli Bee

Capstone Collection

The orphans and vulnerable children of northern Tanzania are offered a unique opportunity of education if selected to attend Peace House Secondary School. The school selects the most needy of this ostracized demographic and offers high quality education by focusing on student-centered techniques.

This study investigates the expectations between students and teachers using ethnographic methods carried out in 2010 and 2011, including student-wide survey, classroom observations and interviews with both teachers and students. Student perspective was intentionally of particular focus in data collection.

The study found that expectations which were shared by all participants revolve around passing exams. Students are …

Family Law, Pluralism, And Human Rights, Ann Laquer Estin Jan 2011

Family Law, Pluralism, And Human Rights, Ann Laquer Estin

Emory International Law Review

Until recent years, authorities in the United States gave little serious consideration to the marriage and family traditions of other religious groups. Courts today accommodate cultural and religious diversity more generously, but always within a larger framework of law requiring nondiscrimination, freedom of conscience, gender equality, and protections for dependent or vulnerable family members. In this context, although the unofficial family law of customary and religious authorities has important consequences for individuals and families, those authorities have not been able to enlist the coercive machinery of the state to enforce their orders. This type of pluralism, characteristic of the United …

Religion, Family Law, And Recognition Of Identity In Nigeria, M. Christian Green Jan 2011

Religion, Family Law, And Recognition Of Identity In Nigeria, M. Christian Green

Emory International Law Review

In this Essay, I discuss some of the key features of Muslim-Christian contestation in Nigeria as revealed in a recent survey conducted by the Pew Forum on Religious Life, titled Tolerance and Tension: Islam and Christianity in Sub-Saharan Africa. I then discuss some of the Pew statistics that bear on the family and gender issues at the heart of the Sharia controversy. Finally, I offer some concluding reflections on whether Muslim-Christian contestation in Nigeria should be construed as a matter of religion qua religion or of 'religion by proxy,' on the prospects for moderate Sharia and juridical pluralism in Nigeria, …

Borders And Crossroads: Comparative Perspectives On Minorities And Conflict Of Laws, Pascale Fournier Jan 2011

Borders And Crossroads: Comparative Perspectives On Minorities And Conflict Of Laws, Pascale Fournier

Emory International Law Review

Millions of immigrants from Muslim countries have entered Western borders in the past decades, bringing with them specific religious traditions and social mores. In accordance with the conflict of laws rules of many continental European legal systems, such as France and Germany, the courts of the host country apply the law of the parties' nationality (lex patriae) in matters relating to marriage and divorce. Under such regimes, Muslim parties involved in family law disputes may be subject to the law of their country of origin. This makes for striking results when applied to individuals who may have lived in a …

Legal Pluralism And The Family In South Africa: Lessons From Customary Law Reform, T. W. Bennett Jan 2011

Legal Pluralism And The Family In South Africa: Lessons From Customary Law Reform, T. W. Bennett

Emory International Law Review

Understanding South Africa's laws on cultural and religious diversity requires understanding its colonial and apartheid past. The most convenient date at which to begin such an inquiry is 1652, when the Dutch East India Company established a revictualling base at what is now Cape Town. Roman-Dutch law was taken to be the basic law of the territory, and it still regulates most aspects of South African private law. In 1814, however, the Netherlands ceded the Cape to Britain, and English law was then imposed in all public and commercial matters.

Propositional Quantification, Ryan Christensen Jan 2011

Propositional Quantification, Ryan Christensen

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Ramsey deWned truth in the following way: xz is true if and only if 'pzz(xz = [zpz] & pz). This deWnition is ill-formed in standard Wrst-order logic, so it is normally interpreted using substitutional or some kind of higher-order quanti-Wer. I argue that these quantiWers fail to provide an adequate reading of the deWnition, but that, given certain adjustments, standard objectual quantiWcation does provide an adequate reading.

Using Ezra's Time As A Methodological Pivot For Understanding The Rhetoric And Functions Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts Jan 2011

Using Ezra's Time As A Methodological Pivot For Understanding The Rhetoric And Functions Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

The Persian period saw the transformation of pentateuchal materials into a scripture, the Torah. The story of Ezra exemplifies that transformation by its description of his manipulation of the physical scroll, his oral reading of it before the people of Jerusalem, and his arrangement for its professional translation/interpretation by Levites. These rituals have characterized the function of the Torah (and other scriptures) from that time forward. The Persian period, however, also marks a major change in the nature of our evidence for the form, contents and meaning of pentateuchal materials. The only historical evidence from before the time of Ezra …

To compare acoustic analysis results obtained by 2 computer programs, Praat and the Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP). Different voice analysis programs use similar descriptions to define voice perturbation measures. Materials and methods: A total of 47 voice samples reflecting a spectrum of normal and pathological voices were randomly selected from a database, and the same voice samples were used to obtain mean fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, and noise-to-harmonics ratio results from 2 acoustic analysis programs. Results: The results obtained for mean fundamental frequency and shimmer were not significantly different between the 2 computer programs. The results for jitter and noise-to-harmonics …

Mapping Desire And Transgression Through Other Languages: Sex And The (Occasionally Multilingual) Provincial City, Karen Rodríguez Jan 2011

Mapping Desire And Transgression Through Other Languages: Sex And The (Occasionally Multilingual) Provincial City, Karen Rodríguez

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article analyzes how a small, conservative city in provincial Mexico uses foreign languages as a partial strategy to map desire and transgression. Drawing on the concept of projective identification and referencing work on the psychoanalytic affects of multilingualism, I examine several other-language texts in the public domain to show how foreign languages create spaces for transgression and the expression of desire. The article speaks to the specificity of multilingualism’s affects and psychic uses in different sites, emphasizing in particular the unique way this plays out in a small city versus a more traditionally defined “global city.”

Openness To Experience, Strength Of Sense Of Self, And Cognitive Dissonance In A Counter-Attitudinal Advocacy Paradigm, Wen Cheng Jan 2011

Openness To Experience, Strength Of Sense Of Self, And Cognitive Dissonance In A Counter-Attitudinal Advocacy Paradigm, Wen Cheng

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

The study was designed to investigate whether personality variables, especially the strength of individuals' sense of self, moderated dissonance reduction behavior in a counter-attitudinal advocacy paradigm. The study included 165 undergraduate participants in a laboratory sample and 182 in an online sample. The participants in both samples completed a series of personality measures before writing a counter-attitudinal essay in favor of a proposed tuition increase. The results indicated that the manipulation of perceived choice had an effect on participants' attitude toward the proposed tuition increase over and above their pre-attitude and personality traits. On the other hand, some personality traits …

Can A Computerized Reading Therapy Protocol Augment Auditory Comprehension In Severe Aphasia?, Brittany Barber Jan 2011

Can A Computerized Reading Therapy Protocol Augment Auditory Comprehension In Severe Aphasia?, Brittany Barber

Honors Capstones

Treatment of severe aphasia has historically been very difficult to remediate, and efficacious treatment options for this type of aphasia are limited (Samo et al., 1970). A person with aphasia demonstrates impairment in the understanding of and expression of oral language. Also, due to the multi-modal nature of aphasia, an individual with aphasia will usually demonstrate impairment in reading abilities as well. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not a computerized reading therapy program could augment auditory comprehension. Utilizing a single-subject, ABA design, we evaluated the effects of computerized ORLA (Chemey, 2010) on an individual with …

Linguistics As Structure In Computer Animation: Toward A More Effective Synthesis Of Brow Motion In American Sign Language, Rosalee Wolfe, Peter Cook, John C. Mcdonald, Jerry Schnepp

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Computer-generated three-dimensional animation holds great promise for synthesizing utterances in American Sign Language (ASL) that are not only grammatical, but well tolerated by members of the Deaf community. Unfortunately, animation poses several challenges stemming from the necessity of grappling with massive amounts of data. However, the linguistics of ASL can aid in surmounting the challenge by providing structure and rules for organizing animation data. An exploration of the linguistic and extra linguistic behavior of the brows from an animator’s viewpoint yields a new approach for synthesizing nonmanuals that differs from the conventional animation of anatomy and instead offers a different …

The purpose of this study was to explore the phenomena of feminist pedagogy as experienced by music therapy educators using phenomenological inquiry. The study examined the following research questions: (a) do music therapy educators use feminist music therapy pedagogy in teaching music therapy, (b) if so, how do they use feminist music therapy pedagogy, (c) what is their experience in using feminist music therapy pedagogy, and (d) how do feminist music therapy educators define their use of feminist pedagogy in undergraduate and graduate music therapy …

Trends In Phishing Attacks: Suggestions For Future Research, Ryan M. Schuetzler Jan 2011

Trends In Phishing Attacks: Suggestions For Future Research, Ryan M. Schuetzler

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Deception in computer-mediated communication is a widespread phenomenon. Cyber criminals are exploiting technological mediums to communicate with potential targets as these channels reduce both the deception cues and the risk of detection itself. A prevalent deception-based attack in computer-mediated communication is phishing. Prior phishing research has addressed the “bait” and “hook” components of phishing attacks, the human-computer interaction that takes place as users judge the veracity of phishing emails and websites, and the development of technologies that can aid users in identifying and rejecting these attacks. Despite the extant research on this topic, phishing attacks continue to be successful as …

Art, Technology And The Future Of Musicianship: Questions Of Balance Between Live Performance And The Recorded Medium In Popular Music, Brian Casey

Theses

This thesis examines live musicianship in terms of balancing audience expectations, perceptions of skill and the use of new technology in live performance with the aesthetic, artistic and sonic influences of the recording process.

Developments in recording studio technology and techniques, live sound reinforcement and approaches to performance are examined from audience and artist perspectives, as a means of evaluating the current role and future development of musicianship in popular music.

Complementing the research, a range of demonstrations will explore live performance by employing techniques and approaches to live musicianship discussed in the research.

Patent Protection Of Medical Records—Focusing On Ethical Issues, Yūsuke Satō, Jiameng Kathy Liu Jan 2011

Patent Protection Of Medical Records—Focusing On Ethical Issues, Yūsuke Satō, Jiameng Kathy Liu

Washington International Law Journal

The following is a translation of “Patent Protection of Medical Methods—Focusing on Ethical Issues,” an article written by Professor Yūsuke Satō in the June 2007 issue of the Japanese periodical Annual of Industrial Property Law. In Japan, despite the lack of an explicit statutory prohibition, methods of medical treatment have never been patentable. The Japan Patent Office (“JPO”) has rejected patenting medical processes on ethical grounds, interpreting that they do not fulfill the statutory requirement of “industrial applicability” in the main sentence of Article 29, Section 1 of the Patent Act, and courts have been confirming this practice. In light …

Still Free, Still Alive: Images Of Haitian Collective Values Portrayed Through Child Characters In Lamartine’S Toussaint Louverture And Agnant’S Alexis D’Haïti, Vanessa C. Marcano Jan 2011

Still Free, Still Alive: Images Of Haitian Collective Values Portrayed Through Child Characters In Lamartine’S Toussaint Louverture And Agnant’S Alexis D’Haïti, Vanessa C. Marcano

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this paper, I argue that the fundamental Haitian values of the struggle for freedom and the prevailing desire for independence are portrayed through the morals and personality of two child characters found in texts set in Saint-Domingue/Haiti. The first character is a young girl named Adrienne in Alphonse de Lamartine’s play Toussaint Louverture (1850) and the second is a young boy named Alexis in Marie-Célie Agnant’s novel Alexis d’Haiti (1999). Through these two characters, Lamartine and Agnant depict Haiti’s struggle to achieve freedom and to retain its unique cultural identity that has allowed this nation once called the “pearl …

Nature In A Box: Ecocriticism, Goethe’S Ironic Werther, And Unbalanced Nature, Heather I. Sullivan Jan 2011

Nature In A Box: Ecocriticism, Goethe’S Ironic Werther, And Unbalanced Nature, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Ecocriticism emphasizes how our bodily and ecological boundaries are just as porous, inter-penetrable, and open as are our cultural and linguistic realms. As individual bodies and communities, we are fully immersed in our material environment and participating in constant exchanges of matter and energy. In this essay, I nevertheless advocate for a cautious approach to the ecocritical question of contested boundaries. After all, some boundaries and membranes are necessary to maintain living organisms. Regarding Timothy Morton’s assertion that we are “radically open,” I note the need for stable and healthy membranes to sustain life, such as our porous yet enclosed …

Profiling Executive Dysfunction In Adolescents With Autism, Nicole R. Rogers Jan 2011

Profiling Executive Dysfunction In Adolescents With Autism, Nicole R. Rogers

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Executive Functions (EF) have been assigned a causative role in a number of disorders, including schizophrenia, Tourette syndrome, autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, violent and criminal behavior, and nearly all learning disabilities. While the term executive functions in the professional literature easily yields more than 150 references, empirical research in which executive functions are studied and linked with specific disorders, such as autism, continues to help answer long-held questions about the disorder and adds to the literature base in order to better understand and treat the disorder. The purpose of this study was to review archival data collected using the Behavior …

Tomáš Masaryk And Jane Addams On Humanitarianism And Cultural Reciprocity, Marilyn Fischer Jan 2011

Tomáš Masaryk And Jane Addams On Humanitarianism And Cultural Reciprocity, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Chapter addresses similarities between Addams's and Masaryk's positions on cultural difference and national states. The similarities were based not only on their shared general humanitarian point of view, but on a personal interaction as well. Masaryk visited the U.S. several times and even delivered series of lectures on Slavs and their history at Hull House in Chicago. Masaryk spoke with Addams and was in contact with her through his daughter Alice, who spent time in Chicago and whom Addams mentored. In these circumstances the similarities in their ideas of trans-nationalism, the plasticity of national identity, and cultural reciprocity are not …
