Schooling And The Everyday Ruptures Transnational Children Encounter In The United States And Mexico, Edmund T. Hamann, Víctor Zúñiga Jan 2011

Schooling And The Everyday Ruptures Transnational Children Encounter In The United States And Mexico, Edmund T. Hamann, Víctor Zúñiga

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Using examples of students in Mexico who used to attend US schools and examples from Georgia of students who used to and might again attend Mexican schools, this chapter considers how an unremarkable, quotidian activity—the act of attending school—can become means for transnationally mobile children to experience shock, disconnection, and a reiterated sense of dislocation if schools are incompletely responsive to learners' biographies.

Promoting Vocabulary Learning For English Learners, Stephanie Wessels Jan 2011

Promoting Vocabulary Learning For English Learners, Stephanie Wessels

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Vocabulary knowledge, which is key to the reading comprehension of English learners (ELs), must be a focus for every teacher in today’s increasingly diverse schools, including those in the mainstream classroom. This article strives to increase awareness of the five characteristics of effective vocabulary instruction as well as demonstrate how such characteristics can be variously emphasized in the before-, during-, and after-reading phases of the instructional process. Research-based strategies can provide teachers and ELs with a gateway to increased vocabulary learning. One such strategy, the Vocabulary Quilt, is explored in depth to illustrate how teachers can use a single strategy …

The Sart Task Does Not Promote Mindlessness In Vigilance Performance, Michael Dillard, David B. Boles, Matthew Funke, Gregory Funke, Victor Finomore, Allen Dukes, Joel S. Warm, Benjamin A. Knott, Gerald Matthews, Raja Parasuraman Jan 2011

The Sart Task Does Not Promote Mindlessness In Vigilance Performance, Michael Dillard, David B. Boles, Matthew Funke, Gregory Funke, Victor Finomore, Allen Dukes, Joel S. Warm, Benjamin A. Knott, Gerald Matthews, Raja Parasuraman

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2011

Vigilance tasks typically require observers to respond to critical signals on their monitored displays and withhold responding to neutral events. The Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) features the opposite response requirements which supposedly lead it to promote a mindless, non-thoughtful approach to the vigilance task that lacks attentional focus. To test that possibility, this study compared the SART to the standard vigilance task in terms of perceived mental workload – indexed by the Multiple Resource Questionnaire (MRQ) – and eye tracking activity – reflected via the Nearest Neighbor Index (NNI) – in the performance of a simulated air-traffic control …

A Penguin's Defense Of The Doctrine Of Equivalents, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga Jan 2011

A Penguin's Defense Of The Doctrine Of Equivalents, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga

Law Faculty Publications

There is no dearth of commentary about the doctrine of equivalents in patent law. Many articles proclaim the doctrine's death, often noting its passage with unbridled delight. Some articles provide empirical evidence to support the assertion that the doctrine of equivalents is dead. Others simply yearn for the doctrine to fade from use, pointing out that no court has "articulated a convincing rationale" for the doctrine's continued use. But maybe these scholars have it wrong. It may be true that the instances of doctrine of equivalents analysis in patent cases are on the decline and successful outcomes based on the …

Aggressors' Rights: The Doctrine Of ‘Equality Between Belligerents’ And The Legacy Of Nuremberg, Michael Mandel Jan 2011

Aggressors' Rights: The Doctrine Of ‘Equality Between Belligerents’ And The Legacy Of Nuremberg, Michael Mandel

Articles & Book Chapters

The moral and legal debate over the separation of jus in bello from jus ad bellum generally assumes that the law of war supports this separation and the concomitant doctrine of ‘equality between belligerents’, also known as the ‘duality’ or the ‘symmetry’ principle. This article examines the Nuremberg-era precedents and legal scholarship, as well as more recent legal and scholarly material, and argues that the general assumption is wrong and that the arguments supporting the radical legal separation of the two jus's are unconvincing.

Using Handheld Touch Screen Enabled Devices And Persuasive Game Mechanics To Teach Quadratic Functions, Alejandro Montoya Jan 2011

Using Handheld Touch Screen Enabled Devices And Persuasive Game Mechanics To Teach Quadratic Functions, Alejandro Montoya

Technical Library

Research has shown that many students are not interested in learning mathematics; they find it difficult to understand, irrelevant to their daily lives, and uninteresting. This thesis explores elements of computer games that may satisfy children’s learning needs and ultimately motivate them to learn mathematical concepts.

According to a 2008 survey conducted by the Washington, D.C. based Pew Research Center, 97% of children between the ages of 12 and 17 in the United States play computer, Web, portable or console games. Based on these numbers we can conclude young students like video games. Over the past few years, a new …

Impact Of Teacher Demographic, Knowledge, And Instructional Variables On Children's Language Development, Donna Ellis

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether a set of teacher demographic, knowledge, and instructional variables is related to preschool children’s literacy development. Specifically, the study investigated how these teacher variables impact children’s language development scores on the four subscales of the Preschool Language Assessment Instrument, Second Edition (PLAI2) and the four subscales of the Test of Language Development – Primary, Fourth Edition (TOLD-P:4). There were two major research questions in the study: (a) Will the predictor set of CLASS emotional support, CLASS classroom organization, CLASS instructional support, level of education, years teaching pre-kindergarten, and answers on …

Modern English Bible Translations, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2011

Modern English Bible Translations, Gaye Strathearn

Faculty Publications

The work of translation from one language to another is always fraught with difficulties—philological, contextual, and even procedural difficulties. If a word has numerous meanings, as most do, how does the translator decide which one to use? Should the translation reflect a wordfor- word translation (i.e., formal equivalence), or should it reflect the idiomatic language of the receptor language (i.e., functional/dynamic equivalence)? The major benefit of a formal-equivalence approach is that the translation maintains a feel for the language and format of the original text. The construction of Hebrew and Greek words and sentences is maintained, as much as possible, …

Reflexivity And Social Phenomenology, Benjamin K. Hoffman Jan 2011

Reflexivity And Social Phenomenology, Benjamin K. Hoffman

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an account of human understanding on the basis of an analysis of German philosopher Martin Heidegger’s Being and Time, and in relation to the thought of the Kyoto School philosopher Watsuji Tetsuro. The aim is to describe shared human intelligibility as founded upon a historical tradition and maintained by concrete practices, and yet as expressed only by interpretive projections, and therefore always open to revision. An analysis of the significance of anxiety and authenticity in Being and Time, as aspects of the existential interpretive process of our lives, is accompanied by a philosophical description of …

Inspiring Our Pedagogical Imagination: Education Through Relationships, Materials, And Images, Shelly Goebl-Parker, Jane Ferris Richardson Jan 2011

Inspiring Our Pedagogical Imagination: Education Through Relationships, Materials, And Images, Shelly Goebl-Parker, Jane Ferris Richardson

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

The inspiration of the Reggio Emilia approach to early education arises from pedagogical theories and methods based on the relationships and "languages" from the studio. Intertwined with a fundamental attitude of research, Reggio inspiration can inform pedagogical thinking for all ages, and is of particular interest for art therapy educators. The authors discuss the impact of these ideas on their work of training undergraduate and graduate students in the field of art therapy. They illustrate and discuss the application of key concepts such as the “languages” of learning, relationships, materials and images, along with the ideas of complexity and “making …

Communicating Vision : A Linguistic Analysis Of Leadership Speeches, Debrah J. Martin Jan 2011

Communicating Vision : A Linguistic Analysis Of Leadership Speeches, Debrah J. Martin

Dissertations

Leadership literature contains ample recommendations that leaders need to have a vision and be competent in visioning. A small subset of that literature recommends that leaders communicate their visions. There are few resources, however, that guide leaders how to communicate their visions. This study consists of an application of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), including Genre Theory, and an extension of SFL, Appraisal Theory, on four visionary speeches in the field of political discourse—Lincoln‘s Gettysburg Address, Churchill‘s ―We Shall Fight on the Beaches,‖ Kennedy‘s inaugural, and Martin Luther King Jr.‘s ―I Have a Dream‖—to discover how these leaders were able to …

Navigating The Edges: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Boundary Spanning, Social Learning, And Partnership Capacity In Water Resource Management, Stephan Edward Brown Jan 2011

Navigating The Edges: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Boundary Spanning, Social Learning, And Partnership Capacity In Water Resource Management, Stephan Edward Brown

Dissertations and Theses

This study proposes a framework for measuring and explaining partnership formation and resilience. The motivation for this study is that we currently do not understand the precise mechanism by which partnerships form or how they stay together in the face of change. The framework draws on a design view of systems to argue that partnerships manage change through boundary spanning practices that operate on multiple levels of social reality. The literature suggests that there are many different types of boundary spanning practices. Some types foster social-technical innovations called "boundary objects" while others facilitate the progressive standardization of those practices through …

Does Critical Mass Matter? Views From The Board Room, Lissa Lamkin Broome, John M. Conley, Kimberly D. Krawiec Jan 2011

Does Critical Mass Matter? Views From The Board Room, Lissa Lamkin Broome, John M. Conley, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, we report and analyze the results of forty-six wide-ranging interviews with corporate directors and other relevant insiders on the general topic of whether and how the racial, ethnic, and gender composition of corporate boards matters. In particular, we explore their views on the concept of “critical mass” — that is, the theory that women and racial or ethnic minorities are unlikely to have an impact in the boardroom until they grow from a few tokens into a considerable minority of the board.

In contrast to other recent qualitative research on corporate boards, we find more limited support …

Can An "Educational" Video Game Improve Cognition In Stroke/Brain Injury Survivors?, Stacey Behnke Jan 2011

Can An "Educational" Video Game Improve Cognition In Stroke/Brain Injury Survivors?, Stacey Behnke

Honors Capstones

Current healthcare policies limit the time during which intensive rehabilitation is available for stroke and brain injury survivors (AAPM&R, 2009). Yet the timeline for recovery from such insults extends well beyond the typical window of rehabilitation provision, which makes independently administered cognitive stimulation an essential component of the recovery process. Unfortunately, little data exist as to the efficacy of such programs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether a computerized, general cognitive stimulation program (Le., Nintendo OS' "Brain Age 2"), would successfully remediate specific cognitive skills in stroke or brain injury survivors compared to healthy controls. The …

The World Englishes Paradigm And Its Implications For International Students' Acquisition Of Standard American English For University-Level Studies In The United States, Karen Applequist Clement Jan 2011

The World Englishes Paradigm And Its Implications For International Students' Acquisition Of Standard American English For University-Level Studies In The United States, Karen Applequist Clement

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Because English, as the predominant international language, is now used in many different forms and contexts globally, attitudes are changing towards variety in English, the construct of English proficiency tests, and methods of teaching English. This paper addresses the fact that many students of English are exposed to non-standard indigenized or lingua franca Englishes, thus potentially marginalizing them in their efforts to succeed on international tests of English based on standard American or British conventions. It examines non-standard grammatical features of world Englishes, summarizes the results of studies on bias in English proficiency tests, and details suggestions for best teaching …

Educate, Inspire, Change: A Musical Ethnography Of World Camp, Inc, Ian R. Copeland Jan 2011

Educate, Inspire, Change: A Musical Ethnography Of World Camp, Inc, Ian R. Copeland

Honors Papers

Blighted by nation-wide HIV and deforestation crises, the nation of Malawi plays host to scores of international Non-Governmental Organizations every year. This project focuses on one such organization, World Camp Incorporated, and its use of musical strategies in the implementation of educational outreach programs in rural primary school classrooms. Throughout a four-day curriculum, music is called upon to energize students, galvanize classroom unity, convey curricular concepts, and re-present medical information to host communities. Much has been written about music's affective and effective power as demonstrated through local community-based organizations, but this ethnographic project resituates music as a tool for social …

Responses To The Ten Questions, Aziz Rana Jan 2011

Responses To The Ten Questions, Aziz Rana

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This essay responds to a question posed by the William Mitchell Law Review for its annual national security issue: Has Obama Improved Bush's National Security Policies? I maintain that Obama Administration practices have been marked by striking continuities with those of the previous Administration. I then attempt to explain these continuities by discussing how American policymakers across the political spectrum share basic assumptions about the concept of national security and the need for an aggressive and interventionist foreign policy.

Suicidal Behavior, Language Acquisition, And Deafness: Evaluating The Potential Relationship Between Age Of Language Acquisition And Prevalence Of Suicidal Behavior In A Deaf Population With Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorder, Jared A. Embree Jan 2011

Suicidal Behavior, Language Acquisition, And Deafness: Evaluating The Potential Relationship Between Age Of Language Acquisition And Prevalence Of Suicidal Behavior In A Deaf Population With Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorder, Jared A. Embree

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Since 2008, the Deaf Off Drugs and Alcohol (DODA) Program has provided culturally appropriate cessation and recovery support services via e-therapy to Deaf/HH individuals with a clinically diagnosed substance use disorder (SUD). The information collected by the DODA program presented an opportunity to study the relationship between delayed language acquisition and suicidal ideation and attempts in a population that has historically been understudied, yet has increased prevalence in both suicidal behavior and significantly delayed language acquisition compared to the general population. Of the 107 prelingually Deaf consumers in the program, 18 reported language acquisition later than age ten. This study …

Convergences And Divergences In International Legal Norms On Migrant Labor, Chantal Thomas Jan 2011

Convergences And Divergences In International Legal Norms On Migrant Labor, Chantal Thomas

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This essay will argue that even where disparate treaties converge doctrinally, they may diverge normatively and that normative divergence may be significant in its own right. Section I of this essay seeks to chart out an initial such analysis, conducting a concise comparison of particular rules affecting migrant workers from different realms of international law. Section I concludes with both a graphic representation of doctrinal convergences and divergences, and a further discussion the doctrinal relationships among treaties as elucidated through consideration of hypothetical legal disputes.

Section II considers the normative implications of divergent rule systems. In particular, Section II raises …

Discriminating Emotions And Engaging Difficult Emotional Material: Implications For Process And Outcome In Written Disclosure, Stephanie L. Nassar Jan 2011

Discriminating Emotions And Engaging Difficult Emotional Material: Implications For Process And Outcome In Written Disclosure, Stephanie L. Nassar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Written disclosure participants have experienced numerous psychological and physiological benefits, as compared to those who wrote about neutral topics (Baikie & Wilhelm, 2005; Corter & Petrie, 2011; Frattaroli, 2006; Pennebaker & Chung, in press). Given the beneficial results of expressive writing commonly found among healthy participants, exploration of this method was expanded to broader populations with mixed results. Researchers have attempted to provide a rationale for why, when, and with whom written disclosure works. As emotional clarity and experiential avoidance have been linked to psychological well-being, this study examined their relative contributions to written disclosure benefits. Participants self-reported on measures …

The Role Of Esl Teacher Support In Facilitating School Adjustment In English Language Learners, Mary Sharp-Ross Jan 2011

The Role Of Esl Teacher Support In Facilitating School Adjustment In English Language Learners, Mary Sharp-Ross

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Immigrant students are the fastest growing sector of the US school population. These students are English Language Learners (ELLs) who enter our schools with a constellation of social-emotional risk factors that predispose them to psychological disorders, as well as undermine their learning and educational outcomes. English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) teacher support is indicated to be a primary protective factor for ELLs facing the pervasive task of acculturation to a new society and school culture. This study surveyed 200 ESL teachers in Pennsylvania in order to gather information regarding their beliefs about the social-emotional and acculturation needs of their …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Elementary School Students' Performance On Progress Monitoring Measures Of Oral Reading Fluency And Reading Comprehension To The Pennsylvania System Of School Assessment, Elana E. Weinstein

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

National education legislation has mandated school district accountability for demonstrating student reading progress. As a result, Response to Intervention models promote benchmark assessments to identify at-risk students and promote proficiency on state assessments. The current study examined third and fourth grade students’ Response to Intervention data and standardized assessments from a suburban school district to determine if Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) and reading comprehension benchmark assessments (4Sight assessments) have utility in predicting performance on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). Results from the current study expanded prior research by analyzing individual benchmark assessments with yearly state assessments. Analyses identified …

Law/Text/Past, Steven Wilf Jan 2011

Law/Text/Past, Steven Wilf

Faculty Articles and Papers

How might legal historians read text? What is particular about their modes of reading as opposed to those employed by readers in other disciplines? This essay will analyze the distinctive features of legal texts such as those stemming from the pervasive reliance upon conventions or boilerplate as part of a bricolage construction, the focus upon legitimizing gestures to official authority, and the normative, almost instrumental nature of many legal texts. While other sorts of texts might be more expressive, statutes, for example, always include a sanction. Drawing upon numerous examples, the paper identifies an expansive array of texts, including extra-official …
