An Effective Real Coded Ga Based Fuzzy Controller For Speed Control Of A Bldc Motor Without Speed Sensor, Ömer Aydoğdu, Ramazan Akkaya
An Effective Real Coded Ga Based Fuzzy Controller For Speed Control Of A Bldc Motor Without Speed Sensor, Ömer Aydoğdu, Ramazan Akkaya
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, an effective Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (GA) based optimal fuzzy controller is proposed. The fuzzy controller is used for sensorless speed control of a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor in DSP based application system. The advantages of adopting a real coded GA for the design and optimization of fuzzy controllers, which have a great deal of design and optimization parameters, are analyzed. Having accomplished optimization of developed fuzzy control system, a multi-objective performance index has been defined and it has been used as an objective function to be minimized in the real coded GA. Thus, the system can …

A Fuzzy Rule-Based System For Predicting The Live Weight Of Holstein Cows Whose Body Dimensions Were Determined By Image Analysis, Şaki̇r Taşdemi̇r, Abdullah Ürkmez, Şeref İnal
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The aim of this study was to determine the body measurement of Holstein cows through image analysis (IA) and to estimate their live weight (LW) by means of a fuzzy rule-based model using the body measurements. For this purpose, a photography environment was established at a dairy cattle farm where a large number of cows were kept. First, digital photographs of each animal were synchronously taken from different directions with Canon EOS 400D cameras. At the same time, body dimensions, namely wither height (WH), hip height (HH), body length (BL), and hip width (HW), of the cows were manually measured …

Cross Linguistic Differences In The Immediate Serial Recall Of Consonants Versus Vowels, Elizabeth M. Kissling
Cross Linguistic Differences In The Immediate Serial Recall Of Consonants Versus Vowels, Elizabeth M. Kissling
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
The current study investigated native English and native Arabic speakers’ phonological short term memory (PSTM) for sequences of consonants and vowels. PSTM was assessed in immediate serial recall tasks conducted in Arabic and English for both groups. Participants (n=39) heard series of 6 CV syllables and wrote down what they recalled. Native speakers of English recalled the vowel series better than consonant series in English and in Arabic, which was not true of native Arabic speakers. An analysis of variance showed that there was an interaction between first language (L1) and phoneme type. The results are discussed in light of …

This volume outlines the principle methodological procedures used in task-based (TB) language courses. TB courses are organized around 'tasks,' where 'task' is generally defined as an activity having a precise objective, requiring learners to use language, and maintaining primary focus on meaning rather than form (see Ellis, 2003, pp. 1-5 for a review of researchers' differing definitions of 'task'). The volume will be of use to teachers who have committed to a task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach, have designed their curriculum accordingly, and are now ready to focus on the procedures they will follow to implement each task. Another volume …

Enhancing Language Learning Opportunities In Family Contexts For Young Learners With Or At Risk For Communicative Developmental Delay: An Initial Investigation, Juli Lull Pool, Deborah Russell Carter, Jack J. Hourcade
Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
Though the early years of life are critical for any child, this period may be especially crucial for young children who are at risk for or presently evidencing developmental delays. Bruder (2001) offered several rationales for the provision of early intervention. First, the earlier that children with such issues are identified and provided services, the greater the likelihood that the child will benefit. Early intervention services can reduce or eliminate developmental delays, moving children out of a risk category (e.g., from “Delayed” to “Typically developing”) (Glascoe, 2005). In addition to these immediate effects, early intervention can have a significant impact …

After summarizing some of what they said about the Harris-Hillman School, I’ll reflect both personally and philosophically on their work.
Translating The Feminine In Anglo-Saxon Literature, Jeremy Scott Ecke
Translating The Feminine In Anglo-Saxon Literature, Jeremy Scott Ecke
Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal
Given the epic, heroic, and masculine ethos of the most well-known Anglo-Saxon poems, it is not surprising that women often figure as background characters, moving among the male- dominated hall, serving mead to the warriors, soothing injured egos, and passing from clan to clan as peace-weavers mending old wounds.
Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation Changes Velopharyngeal Control In Parkinson’S Disease, Michael J. Hammer, Steven M. Barlow, Kelly E. Lyons, Rajesh Pahwa
Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation Changes Velopharyngeal Control In Parkinson’S Disease, Michael J. Hammer, Steven M. Barlow, Kelly E. Lyons, Rajesh Pahwa
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Purpose
Adequate velopharyngeal control is essential for speech, but may be impaired in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) improves limb function in PD, but the effects on velopharyngeal control remain unknown. We tested whether STN DBS would change aerodynamic measures of velopharyngeal control, and whether these changes were correlated with limb function and stimulation settings.
Methods
Seventeen PD participants with bilateral STN DBS were tested within a morning session after a minimum of 12 h since their most recent dose of anti-PD medication. Testing occurred when STN DBS was on, and again 1 h …
Communication Support For People With Als, David R. Beukelman, Susan Fager, Amy Nordness
Communication Support For People With Als, David R. Beukelman, Susan Fager, Amy Nordness
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Almost all people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) experience a motor speech disorder, such as dysarthria, as the disease progresses. At some point, 80 to 95% of people with ALS are unable tomeet their daily communication needs using natural speech. Unfortunately, once intelligibility begins to decrease, speech performance often deteriorates so rapidly that there is little time to implement an appropriate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention; therefore, appropriate timing of referral for AAC assessment and intervention continues to be a most important clinical decision-making issue. AAC acceptance and use have increased considerably during the past decade. Many people use …

The Influence Of Neighborhood Density And Word Frequency On Phoneme Awareness In 2nd And 4th Grades, Tiffany Hogan, Ryan P. Bowles, Hugh W. Catts, Holly L. Storkel
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that two lexical characteristics – neighborhood density and word frequency – interact to influence performance on phoneme awareness tasks. Phoneme awareness was examined in a large, longitudinal dataset of 2nd and 4th grade children. Using linear logistic test model, the relation between words’ neighborhood density, word frequency, and phoneme awareness performance was examined across grades while co-varying type and place of deletion. A predicted interaction was revealed: words from dense neighborhoods or those with high frequency were more likely to yield correct phoneme awareness responses across grades. Findings support an …

Beginning With El Barrio: Learning From Exemplary Teachers Of Latino Students, Jason G. Irizarry, John Raible
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This study draws from data collected through phenomenological interviews with a group of urban teachers identified as “exemplary” by Latino students, parents, and community members. The authors critically examine the participants’ biographies and document factors they cited as most germane and influential to informing their practice with Latino students. The article concludes with a discussion of barrio-based epistemologies and ontologies, or ways of being and knowing that are informed by extended immersion in and connection to Latino cultural and linguistic communities, particularly as they are developed explicitly and leveraged to improve educational experiences and outcomes for Latino youth.

Prototyping An Online Wetland Ecosystem Services Model Using Open Model Sharing Standards, Min Feng, Shuguang Liu, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Claudia Young, David M. Mushet
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Great interest currently exists for developing ecosystem models to forecast how ecosystem services may change under alternative land use and climate futures. Ecosystem services are diverse and include supporting services or functions (e.g., primary production, nutrient cycling), provisioning services (e.g., wildlife, groundwater), regulating services (e.g., water purification, floodwater retention), and even cultural services (e.g., ecotourism, cultural heritage). Hence, the knowledge base necessary to quantify ecosystem services is broad and derived from many diverse scientific disciplines. Building the required interdisciplinary models is especially challenging as modelers from different locations and times may develop the disciplinary models needed for ecosystem simulations, and …

The Impact Of Pre-K Programs On Student Achievement And Instructional Leadership In Rural Mississippi School Districts, Jeremy Eugene Stinson
The Impact Of Pre-K Programs On Student Achievement And Instructional Leadership In Rural Mississippi School Districts, Jeremy Eugene Stinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 2011, Mississippi continues to be the only state in the southern region without a single state-funded pre-k program (NIEER, 2007), and all preschool funds in the state are currently allotted to Head Start. Witte and Trowbridge (2004) warned that the combination of pre-k programs could be the reason for highly fragmented systems of state funding, policies, and regulations. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to investigate whether differences exist between preschool groups in three North Mississippi school districts and to determine the degree to which stakeholders in the programs practice instructional leadership. From a quantitative perspective, the …
Reforming Tastes: Taste As A Print Aesthetic In American Cookery Writing, Sarah Wurgler Walden
Reforming Tastes: Taste As A Print Aesthetic In American Cookery Writing, Sarah Wurgler Walden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many eighteenth-century philosophers such as Kant and Hume worked to develop discourses of taste as a means of standardizing cultural behaviors. Using physical taste as a metaphor for aesthetic perception and judgment, these writers could both define and abstract group boundaries. As American writers worked to distinguish their nation from their British forebears, many recognized the utility of taste-based discourse and worked to develop cultural tastes around shared principles of egalitarianism and democracy. Cookbooks and domestic writing soon engaged these discourses, as it was the task of women to cultivate a virtuous citizenry, and—through domestic print culture—to demonstrate the deleterious …

Horizontality And The "Spooky" Doctrines Of American Law, Helen Hershkoff
Faculty Articles
The article discusses the possibility of the existence of a methodological gap between the interpretative approach of U.S. courts and constitutional courts abroad in constitutional cases. It examines if American law has the analytic tools, internal to U.S. constitutional practice, that support the rearrangement of state action doctrine towards horizontality. The German term, Drittwirkung der Grundrecht, referring to relaxation of state action requirements outside the U.S., has been used.
Listening For The Unconscious : An Exploration Of Lacanian Clinical Perspectives Applied To Social Work Practice, Katharine Barbey Thomas
Listening For The Unconscious : An Exploration Of Lacanian Clinical Perspectives Applied To Social Work Practice, Katharine Barbey Thomas
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explores clinical perspectives based on the work of Parisian psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan (1901-1981) applied to social work practice. Through in-depth interviews with five Lacanian clinicians residing in North America, this study asks what the unconscious as a clinical reality offers social workers in incorporating and listening for yet another dimension of human experience. The findings from the interviews will contribute to a critical reflection on social work's core values outlined in the code of ethics under the headings of "service," "social justice," "dignity and worth of the person," and "the importance of human relationships". In turn, this …
‘The Mystic Drum’: Critical Commentary On Gabriel Okara’S Love Lyrics, Chukwuma Azuonye
‘The Mystic Drum’: Critical Commentary On Gabriel Okara’S Love Lyrics, Chukwuma Azuonye
Africana Studies Faculty Publication Series
Structurally, Okara’s love lyric, “The Mystic Drum,” evinces a tripartite ritual pattern of initiation from innocence through intimacy to experience. By comparison to the way of Zen as manifested in the experience of Zen Master, Ch’ing Yuän Wei-hsin, this pattern resolves itself into an emotional and epistemological journey from conventional knowledge (born of innocence) through more intimate knowledge (born of closer apperception of reality) to substantial knowledge (born of experience). The substantial knowledge born of experience empowers the lover to understand that beneath the surface attractiveness of what we know very well (such as the women we love) may lie …
'The White Man Laughs': Commentary On The Satiric Dramatic Monologues Of Gabriel Okara, Chukwuma Azuonye
'The White Man Laughs': Commentary On The Satiric Dramatic Monologues Of Gabriel Okara, Chukwuma Azuonye
Africana Studies Faculty Publication Series
Examined in the present article are two early satiric lyrics of Gabriel Okara—“Once Upon a Time” and “He Laughed and Laughed and Laughed”—which are the products of the postcolonial cultural war environment in which the issues of modernity, alterity (otherness or difference) and afro-authenticity implicated in Achebe’s ripostes on the bigotry of the colonialist critic were central. The tone of this discourse amongst leading African intelligentsia was set in the 1930’s and 1940’s by four fellow south-eastern Nigerian writers in their semi-autobiographical blueprints for African cultural emancipation—Renascent Africa ((1937)) by Nnamdi Azikiwe (1904–1996); British and Axis Aims in Africa (1942) …

The Present Past - A Middle Swabian Dialect In The 21st Century, Stefanie Hirscher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dialects throughout the Federal Republic of Germany not only vary greatly among themselves, but also tend to show internal variations with regard to dialect speaker groups, due to the influence of Standard German along with other regional factors. Medium-sized towns seem to be at the center of this dialect-standard continuum, as speakers from both rural and more urban areas come together in these towns. This study sought to investigate the state of the Middle Swabian dialect as spoken in Schwäbisch Gmünd, a medium-sized town in Southwestern Germany. Previous studies of this dialect have focused on rural areas and found only …
