Refractory Pain, Existential Suffering, And Palliative Care: Releasing An Unbearable Lightness Of Being, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2011

Refractory Pain, Existential Suffering, And Palliative Care: Releasing An Unbearable Lightness Of Being, George P. Smith Ii

Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy

Since the beginning of the hospice movement in 1967, "total pain management" has been the declared goal of hospice care. Palliating the whole person's physical, psychosocial, and spiritual states or conditions is central to managing the pain that induces suffering. At the end-stage of life, an inextricable component of the ethics of adjusted care requires recognition of a fundamental right to avoid cruel and unusual suffering from terminal illness. This Article urges wider consideration and use of terminal sedation, or sedation until death, as an efficacious palliative treatment and as a reasonable medical procedure in order to safeguard the "right" …

On A Roll: Enticing English Language Learners To Absorb Vocabulary, Eileen Hennessy Jan 2011

On A Roll: Enticing English Language Learners To Absorb Vocabulary, Eileen Hennessy

The Utah English Journal

It’s true what they say: Teaching is full of surprises. It’s never boring and no day is ever like the previous or the next. Many times in my career I have been astounded by the knowledge that those little second grade brains bring to my Room 25. And, every once in a while, I am astounded for the opposite reason. That was case on this particular day when I was introducing a lesson on multiplemeaning words to my English language learners. Naturally, I wanted them to determine on their own what multiple-meaning words were.

If The Ninja Explores The Cave, Go To Page 8, Rebecca Stasney

The Utah English Journal

In the lowest level of developmental writing at my community college, students really do learn skills from the ground up. Our objectives include covering basic grammatical concepts such as parts of speech, plurals, and subject-verb agreement. We also discuss different elements of writing such as main idea, supporting details, and transition words. Many college students feel resentful for being placed in a class that teaches them skills that are so elementary, and as a result, they are often resistant to class activities and assignments. In my experience, the choose-your-own adventure writing project is a great way to incorporate these learning …

Intensive Voice Treatment (Lsvt®Loud) For Parkinson's Disease Following Deep Brain Stimulation Of The Subthalamic Nucleus, Jennifer Spielman, Leslie Mahler, Angela Halpern, Phillip Gilley, Olga Klepitskaya, Lorraine Ramig

Communicative Disorders Faculty Publications

Purpose: Intensive voice therapy (LSVT®LOUD) can effectively manage voice and speech symptoms associated with idiopathic Parkinson disease (PD). This small-group study evaluated voice and speech in individuals with and without deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) before and after LSVT LOUD, to determine whether outcomes for surgical subjects were comparable to non-surgical cohorts.

Methods: Eight subjects with PD (four with STN-DBS and four without) received LSVT LOUD four times a week for four weeks. Four additional subjects with PD remained untreated. Voice intensity (SPL), Vowel Articulation Index (VAI), the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), and a structured …

Mixed-Source Reintroductions Lead To Outbreeding Depression In Second-Generation Descendents Of A Native North American Fish, David D. Huff, Loren M. Miller, Christopher J. Chizinski, Bruce Vondracek Jan 2011

Mixed-Source Reintroductions Lead To Outbreeding Depression In Second-Generation Descendents Of A Native North American Fish, David D. Huff, Loren M. Miller, Christopher J. Chizinski, Bruce Vondracek

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Reintroductions are commonly employed to preserve intraspecific biodiversity in fragmented landscapes. However, reintroduced populations are frequently smaller and more geographically isolated than native populations. Mixing genetically, divergent sources are often proposed to attenuate potentially low genetic diversity in reintroduced populations that may result from small effective population sizes. However, a possible negative tradeoff for mixing sources is outbreeding depression in hybrid offspring. We examined the consequences of mixed-source reintroductions on several fitness surrogates at nine slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus) reintroduction sites in south-east Minnesota. We inferred the relative fitness of each crosstype in the reintroduced populations by comparing …

Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone Jan 2011

Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone

The Asbury Journal

This essay explores the role of biblical exegesis in the task of Christian theology and in the contemporary global mission of the church from the perspective of an Old Testament scholar. It poses the question what a biblical exegesis would look like that was consistently Christian in its assumptions while, at the same time, honest and competent in dealing with the phenomena of the biblical text. Using the exegesis of the early centuries of the church as a case study, the essay develops insights into the role of serious biblical study in empowering the early church's vibrant expansion through the …

Herta Muller's Barefoot February A Translation, Adam Bresnahan Jan 2011

Herta Muller's Barefoot February A Translation, Adam Bresnahan

Theses & ETDs

This thesis consists of three major components. The primary component is a translation of Herta Mller's collection of short stories, Barfiger Februar, published in 1987 upon her migration from Transylvania to Berlin. These stories overarching narrative details the experience of migration, the writer's self-consciousness in two political environs, and the contradictions that arise out of the comparison of these environs. The historical content of the stories is drawn from the author's life, as well as from the history of Romania, and German-speaking Transylvania in particular, after the Second World War. The first chapter discusses the historical background of post-World War …

Communicating Privacy A Politico-Philosophical Investigation Of Private Autonomy In Deliberative Democracy, Kristin Malossi Jan 2011

Communicating Privacy A Politico-Philosophical Investigation Of Private Autonomy In Deliberative Democracy, Kristin Malossi

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is a dual interrogation of the right to privacy and communication in the public sphere as two essentially-related components of a constitutional democracy. A paradox of privacy occurs when the law oversteps its own self-limit under the purported goal of enhancing private autonomy. In light of this paradox, any established normative account of privacy runs the risk of contradicting the actual experiences of some citizens. When private autonomy is freedom of action within the limits of the law, a normative account of what is private may marginalize voices offering a different account, and may ultimately marginalize those citizens …

Adult Literacy Practices And Associated Motivational Needs, Kathryn A. Klein Jan 2011

Adult Literacy Practices And Associated Motivational Needs, Kathryn A. Klein

Theses & ETDs

Several factors have been linked to positive adult literacy program outcomes, however many possible influential factors on program success have yet to be researched. On the other hand, autonomy, competence, and relatedness, the three needs described by Self Determination Theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 2000) as crucial for the existence of intrinsic motivation, have been linked to a variety of positive outcomes in many academic contexts with students of a variety of age groups. The current study used SDT as a framework with which to investigate predictors of adult literacy practices through assessment of these students needs as learners. Three …

To Flatten Time & Give Blood To Ghosts Ezra Pound's Homage To Sextus Propertius, David Belew Jan 2011

To Flatten Time & Give Blood To Ghosts Ezra Pound's Homage To Sextus Propertius, David Belew

Theses & ETDs

This thesis incorporates Classical approaches and modern literary criticism to examine Ezra Pound's Homage to Sextus Propertius. This translation of the Augustan poet is first contextualized through the lens of Pound's poetics and wide ranging ideas on translation. The second chapter uses contemporary Classical scholarship to contextualize Propertius' work within the broader Augustan culture and his poetic influences. This view is then contrasted with historically held views of Propertius, particularly those of the Romantic era. The third chapter ties both perspectives together and questions the notion of whether any translation could capture the true Propertius.

Qualities Of Offline And Online Friendships Jealousy And Relationship Satisfaction, Catherine Zakoske Jan 2011

Qualities Of Offline And Online Friendships Jealousy And Relationship Satisfaction, Catherine Zakoske

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, jealousy and relationship satisfaction in online and offline friendships were examined. I hypothesized that participants in online friendships would report higher jealousy than participants in offline relationships. I also hypothesized that participants in offline friendships would have higher relationship satisfaction than participants in online friendships. Participants were 81 people, 16 male and 65 female. Participants were randomly assigned to report on their online friendships or offline friendships. They then completed an online survey consisting of a relationship satisfaction measure and the Multidimensional Jealousy scale. The Multidimensional Jealousy scale consists of three subscales; cognitive jealousy, emotional jealousy, and …

The Self, Language Objects, And Psychedelic Perspectives, David Krane Jan 2011

The Self, Language Objects, And Psychedelic Perspectives, David Krane

Theses & ETDs

There is a stark contrast to be made between Daniel Dennett's conception of a self as a center of narrative gravity and a conception of a self that emerges from linguistic structures more deeply embedded in immediate experience. Daniel Dennett's model stands on a foundation of thought about stances of prediction toward various kinds of systems and carries assumptions laden in that thought too far into the most complex, mysterious and personal systems for their contradictions with direct experience to remain excused. After explaining Dennett's model, I will elaborate on specific problems with identifying as a center of narrative gravity, …

This Is A Thesis Co-Creating Aletrnative Stand-Up Comedy, Jeremy Blackowiak Jan 2011

This Is A Thesis Co-Creating Aletrnative Stand-Up Comedy, Jeremy Blackowiak

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines questions of audience, gender, and comic persona in three recorded works of alternative stand-up comedy. After establishing a historical and literary context for the study of stand-up comedy, the project splits into three chapters. Chapter I examines Demetri Martins 2006 album These Are Jokes. This first chapter focuses on questions of the comic-audience relationship, in which Martin manipulates stage power dynamics. Muting himself with a second performer, Martin shifts creative opportunity onto the audience. Chapter II examines Maria Bamfords 2007 album Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome. This chapter complicates the traditional power dynamic by appraising how the comic persona …

Betwixt And Between Au Pairs In The United States, Agne Milukaite Jan 2011

Betwixt And Between Au Pairs In The United States, Agne Milukaite

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the au pair program in the United States. I argue that au pairs do not conform to a simple explanation or definition. Instead, the young women who participate in the program are better understood in terms of their liminalitya temporary phase that is part of a life-stage transformation similar to a rite of passage. I believe that this program is an illustration of a broader phenomenon of modern liminality which retains aspects of pre-industrial rites of passage but adds to those rites labor as a means of ordering this transformation. My findings show that while this labor …

"Here I Am." A Call For Ethics In Hebrew Emmanual Levinas's Ethical/ Political Thought Through The Lens Of Hebraic Transcendence, Leila Shooshani Jan 2011

"Here I Am." A Call For Ethics In Hebrew Emmanual Levinas's Ethical/ Political Thought Through The Lens Of Hebraic Transcendence, Leila Shooshani

Theses & ETDs

This thesis undertakes an analysis of Levinass thought, as it specifically relates to his ethical/political formulations. I attempt to defend the idea that Levinas's first and last thoughts are political, that his ethics were inspired by a political reality, and will find their concretization in the political. I argue that the Holocaust, representing the dead end of political ontology, incited Levinas towards what he located as otherwise than being. He found what was otherwise to Western ontology in the Hebrew, whose texts teach an ethics that is based upon the being of the other. Levinas then uses the Hebrew ethic, …

"Feminist Fairy Tales" Female Agency And Subversive Message In Fairy Tales Of The Traditional European Canon, Marisa Reichert Jan 2011

"Feminist Fairy Tales" Female Agency And Subversive Message In Fairy Tales Of The Traditional European Canon, Marisa Reichert

Theses & ETDs

The thesis is situated in the context of previous feminist literary critique of fairy tales, attempting to answer common questions of whether fairy tales can be considered "feminist" or pro-woman. The author uses tale type AT 425A from the traditional European canon of fairy tales to examine this question and attempt to answer it. This tale type, The Search for the Lost Husband, is based on the plot structure and themes of Apuleius's second-century AD work, The Tale of Cupid and Psyche, and is a story about arranged marriage from the wife's perspective. The thesis first discusses the history of …

Maintaining Inequality A Comparative Study Of Educational Stratification In Argentina And The United States, Maia G. De La Calle Jan 2011

Maintaining Inequality A Comparative Study Of Educational Stratification In Argentina And The United States, Maia G. De La Calle

Theses & ETDs

A growing body of literature argues that schooling is not the great equalizer; rather, it reproduces inequality. Most of these theories concur that schools are not neutral enterprises, but sites of conflict. Educational inequality can be observed in the differences in approach and quality among public schools located in different socioeconomic districts. These differences in educational experience are reflected in the curriculum, resources, achievement rates, drop-out rates, and teacher qualifications, among other factors. Given that the current decentralized educational policies in the U.S. have not reduced the expanding achievement gap, my thesis project examines whether more centralized educational policies, such …

"What Is This I Don't Even An Investigation Of Postmodern Fiction, Michael Marazzi Jan 2011

"What Is This I Don't Even An Investigation Of Postmodern Fiction, Michael Marazzi

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the relationship between three American postmodernist texts: Thomas Pynchons The Crying of Lot 49, Don DeLillos White Noise, and Mark Danielewskis House of Leaves. Using the theories of Ferdinand de Saussure and Brian McHale, I argue that each of these novels offers a different manifestation of the struggle to find the real, which can be understood as objective truth, meaning, or an existence external to physical reality. Furthermore, these novels progressively reflect an increasing concern with media and its ability to create, define, and manipulate diegetic relationships. I argue that these three works are milestones in a …

What Do The Textbooks Say? An Anthropological Study Of Highschool American History Curriculum Content, Chelsea Montgomery Jan 2011

What Do The Textbooks Say? An Anthropological Study Of Highschool American History Curriculum Content, Chelsea Montgomery

Theses & ETDs

Public outreach is a growing concern within anthropology, but anthropological research that focuses on what is being taught in K-12 classrooms is nearly non-existent. However, this thesis lies at an intersection of anthropology, education, and public outreach. I begin by providing background information on the current state of educational inequity in the United States before reviewing John Ogbu's cultural ecology model (CEM). When problematized, CEM becomes a useful tool for analyzing the connection between curriculum content and student engagement. To further elucidate this connection, I looked at two recent sociological investigations of curriculum content and student engagement. From this grounding …

Successes And Failures Of Democratic Consolidation South Asia A Comparative Study Of India And Pakistan, Dolan Cochran Jan 2011

Successes And Failures Of Democratic Consolidation South Asia A Comparative Study Of India And Pakistan, Dolan Cochran

Theses & ETDs

This study investigates processes of democratic transition in India and Pakistan in an attempt to explain why India achieved democratic consolidation while democracy in Pakistan became unstable and prone to authoritarian interventions. The political and social systems of South Asia are analyzed utilizing a historical institutionalist approach that incorporates process-tracing methods and event history analysis. Particular attention is paid to the period of British Colonial rule and its impact on social, political, and economic systems, as well as notions of identity in the subcontinent. A focus on political development over time reveals significant disparities between Hindus and Muslims during British …

Co-Creating Collaborative Health Care In A Federally Qualified Health Center: Exploring Clients' Experiences Of Behavioral Health Services, Ginny-Lea Tonore Jan 2011

Co-Creating Collaborative Health Care In A Federally Qualified Health Center: Exploring Clients' Experiences Of Behavioral Health Services, Ginny-Lea Tonore

Marriage and Family Therapy - Dissertations

Research indicates that living in poverty exacerbates the risk for poor mental health, yet low-income people are less likely to seek mental health treatment than are people in higher income brackets. The research literature reports that this reluctance to seek behavioral health care is often due to a variety of barriers, such as stigma, costs, victimization, discrimination, and labeling. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are collaborative healthcare clinics that are uniquely positioned to eliminate many recognized barriers to care that hinder access to mental health services for some vulnerable and underserved populations. Most of the collaborative health care literature is …

Nature, Domestic Labor, And Moral Community In Susan Fenimore Cooper's Rural Hours And Elinor Wyllys, Richard M. Magee Jan 2011

Nature, Domestic Labor, And Moral Community In Susan Fenimore Cooper's Rural Hours And Elinor Wyllys, Richard M. Magee

English Faculty Publications

Cooper's argument for a domestic ideal situated within a rural setting reinforces the importance of community connections through a shared sense of morality, as well as understanding of the natural world. Community alone—the human connections—never seems to be enough in Cooper's formulation, but must always exist with an awareness of the world outside the narrow confines of one's own domestic sphere. Concern for one's fellow-beings necessitates a concern for the world in which these beings live, and Cooper understands that when any bonds are broken—such as the bonds that connect us to the natural world—other bonds are threatened. Thus, when …

A Liberating Intent: The American Civics Curriculum In Illinois High Schools And The Development Of A Critically Constructive Citizenry, Gustavo David Albear

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

CivicsEducation and constructive criticality are not usually found within the same curriculum. In America the two concepts tend to be considered as antithetical in content and practice. Students and teachers do not approachEducation about the citizen's responsibilities with great necessity or urgency, and when they do approach the subject it is from the perspective of inherent rights that should not be questioned, since they are by birth granted, albeit only to some. The idea of criticality is also not considered to be part of the developmental need of a citizen, since the overall sentiment associated with it is one of …
