Writers And The State: Heterotopias Of Exclusion In The Works Of Sonallah Ibrahim And Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi, Sherine Nabil El Taraboulsi Feb 2011

Writers And The State: Heterotopias Of Exclusion In The Works Of Sonallah Ibrahim And Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi, Sherine Nabil El Taraboulsi

Theses and Dissertations

In undemocratic regimes, the cultural space is expected to align with the structure of domination, and cultural production is deemed an arm of the state, a vehicle for conformity and indoctrination. Under such circumstances, the personal and artistic choices of writers and artists become highly politicized. This thesis looks at the politics of interaction between writers and the state, specifically focusing on the heterogeneous literary space created by the author in which structures of domination are unveiled, and those placed on the periphery by the state are brought to the center of the literary space. A writer as citizen negotiates …

Contentious Politics In The Maghreb: A Comparative Study Of Mobilization In Tunisia And Morocco, Johan Rognlie Roko Feb 2011

Contentious Politics In The Maghreb: A Comparative Study Of Mobilization In Tunisia And Morocco, Johan Rognlie Roko

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis sets out by exploring processes of socio-economic and political change leading up to the most recent upheavals in the Arab World, with a focus on Tunisia and Morocco. A comparative study of the different historical trajectories of these countries is useful to identify causes for variation between countries that share many cultural, historical, socio-economic, and also political characteristics. The thesis illustrates how these countries have liberalized their economies without liberalizing their polities to the same extent, a process that has undermined regime legitimacy gradually over many years. In Tunisia the worsening marginalization for growing segments of the population …

Cairene Women: A Bachelorette, Not A Spinster!, Sandra Abdalla Khalifa Feb 2011

Cairene Women: A Bachelorette, Not A Spinster!, Sandra Abdalla Khalifa

Theses and Dissertations

"They ask young girls here [in Egypt] when they are three or four, who would you marry, they implant the idea your only purpose in life is to get married. Even after she goes to school they tell her that a girl's only future is in her husband's home. So what happens when a girl for any reason cannot get married? Should she set fire to herself?" --Awza Atgawez, Ghada Abdel'al. This study proposes that females who remain unmarried until a certain age are to be referred to as "bachelorettes" and not "spinsters" . "The bachelorette" is a female who …

The Effect Of Using Same Language Subtitling (Sls) In Content Comprehension And Vocabulary Acquisition In Arabic As A Foreign Language (Afl), Aysha Abdel-Moneim Selim

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the effects of SLS (Same-Language subtitling) on content comprehension and vocabulary acquisition of MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) as L2 at the intermediate level and addresses three research questions: (1) Does SLS enhance or hinder L2 content comprehension when the writing script of L2 is different than that of L1? (2) Does SLS enhance or hinder L2 vocabulary acquisition when the writing script of L2 is different than that of L1? (3) What is students' attitude towards the use of SLS? Twenty seven students of AUC's ALI program with English as L1 were chosen for the study and …

Parents’ Attitudes Towards Their Children’S Bilingualism And Cultural Identity In International Schools In Egypt, Mona Aboulfetouh Feb 2011

Parents’ Attitudes Towards Their Children’S Bilingualism And Cultural Identity In International Schools In Egypt, Mona Aboulfetouh

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines Egyptian parents' attitudes towards their children's bilingualism in the context of English-medium international schools in Egypt. It also aims at comparing their past aspirations and motives to choose international schools and their current attitudes towards their children's school and educational experience. Research has shown that learners' attitudes towards the second language affect their language development. In addition, parents play a vital role in influencing their children's academic progress and attitudes towards their first language. Therefore, examining parents' opinions and attitudes towards their children's educational system and language learning is important to understand how these attitudes may influence …

What Do We Mean By Mathematical Proof?, Todd Cadwalladerolsker Jan 2011

What Do We Mean By Mathematical Proof?, Todd Cadwalladerolsker

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Mathematical proof lies at the foundations of mathematics, but there are several notions of what mathematical proof is, or might be. In fact, the idea of mathematical proof continues to evolve. In this article, I review the body of literature that argues that there are at least two widely held meanings of proof, and that the standards of proof are negotiated and agreed upon by the members of mathematical communities. The formal view of proof is contrasted with the view of proofs as arguments intended to convince a reader. These views are examined in the context of the various roles …

On Lehi's Trail: Nahom, Ishmael's Burial Place, Stephen D. Ricks Jan 2011

On Lehi's Trail: Nahom, Ishmael's Burial Place, Stephen D. Ricks

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Nahom, a proper name given as the burial place of Ishmael in 1 Nephi 16:34, compellingly correlates archaeologically, geographically, and historically to the site of Nehem on the Arabian peninsula. However, as this article exhibits, some of the linguistic and etymological evidence given to connect the Book of Mormon Nahom to the Arabian Nehem is somewhat problematic.

Brand names are often considered as a part of product and important extrinsic cues of product evaluation, when consumers make purchasing decisions. For a company, brand names are also important assets. Building a strong brand name in the Chinese commonwealth is a main challenge for many global companies. One of the first problem global company has to face is how to translate English brand name into Chinese brand name. It is very difficult decision because of cultural and linguistic differences. Western languages are based on an alphabet phonetic system, whereas Chinese are based on ideogram. Chinese speakers are more likely …

American Muslim Identities: A Qualitative Study Of Two Mosques In South Florida, Azka Mahmood Mahmood Jan 2011

American Muslim Identities: A Qualitative Study Of Two Mosques In South Florida, Azka Mahmood Mahmood

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Most existing research on Muslims and transnational Islam originates from Europe. However, the Muslim population in Europe differs from American Muslims in a number of important ways. In this research I aim to address the general paucity in sociological literature that originates from the U.S. and focus on the mosque as a space where American Muslim identity forms and evolves for both first- and second-generation American Muslims. I examine two American mosques in South Florida as the sites of the development of American Muslim identities based on ethnographic data and participant interviews. I find that the research sites perform functions …

Using Hotspots As A Novel Method For Accessing Key Events In A Large Multi-Modal Corpus, Catherine Oertel, Celine De Looze, Brian Vaughan, Emer Gilmartin, Petra Wagner

Conference papers

n 2009 we created the D64 corpus, a multi-modal corpus which consists of roughly eight hours of natural, non-directed spontaneous interaction in an informal setting. Five participants feature in the recordings and their conversations were captured by microphones (room, body mounted and head mounted), video cameras and a motion capture system. The large amount of video, audio and motion capture material made it necessary to structure and make available the corpus in such a way that it is easy to browse and query for various types of data that we term primary, secondary and tertiary. While users are able to …

Intelligibility Of Electrolarynx Speech Using A Novel Hands-Free Actuator, Brian Madden, Mark Nolan, Ted Burke, James Condron, Eugene Coyle Jan 2011

Intelligibility Of Electrolarynx Speech Using A Novel Hands-Free Actuator, Brian Madden, Mark Nolan, Ted Burke, James Condron, Eugene Coyle

Conference Papers

During voiced speech, the larynx provides quasi-periodic acoustic excitation of the vocal tract. In most electrolarynxes, mechanical vibrations are produced by a linear electromechanical actuator, the armature of which percusses against a metal or plastic plate at a frequency within the range of glottal excitation. In this paper, the intelligibility of speech produced using a novel hands-free actuator is compared to speech produced using a conventional electrolarynx. Two able-bodied speakers (one male, one female) performed a closed response test containing 28 monosyllabic words, once using a conventional electrolarynx and a second time using the novel design. The resulting audio recordings …

On The Need For Embodied And Dis-Embodied Cognition, Guy Dove Jan 2011

On The Need For Embodied And Dis-Embodied Cognition, Guy Dove

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This essay proposes and defends a pluralistic theory of conceptual embodiment. Our concepts are represented in at least two ways: (i) through sensorimotor simulations of our interactions with objects and events and (ii) through sensorimotor simulations of natural language processing. Linguistic representations are “dis-embodied” in the sense that they are dynamic and multimodal but, in contrast to other forms of embodied cognition, do not inherit semantic content from this embodiment. The capacity to store information in the associations and inferential relationships among linguistic representations extends our cognitive reach and provides an explanation of our ability to abstract and generalize. This …

(A)Wry Views: Anamorphosis, Cervantes, And The Early Picaresque, David R. Castillo Jan 2011

(A)Wry Views: Anamorphosis, Cervantes, And The Early Picaresque, David R. Castillo

Purdue University Press Books

The term anamorphosis, from the greek ana (again) and morphe (shape), designates a variety of perspective experiments that can be traced back to the artistic developments of the 1500's and 1600's. Anamorphic devices challenge viewers to experience different forms of perceptual oscillation and uncertainty. Images shift in front of the eyes of puzzled spectators as they move from the center of the representation to the margins, or from one side to the other. (A) Wry Views demonstrates that much of the literature of the Spanish Golden Age is susceptible, and indeed requires, oblique readings (as in anamorphosis).

A Test Of The Role Of The Medial Temporal Lobe In Single-Word Decoding., Karol Osipowicz, Tyler Rickards, Atif Shah, Ashwini Sharan, Michael Sperling, Waseem Kahn, Joseph Tracy

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

The degree to which the MTL system contributes to effective language skills is not well delineated. We sought to determine if the MTL plays a role in single-word decoding in healthy, normal skilled readers. The experiment follows from the implications of the dual-process model of single-word decoding, which provides distinct predictions about the nature of MTL involvement. The paradigm utilized word (regular and irregularly spelled words) and pseudoword (phonetically regular) stimuli that differed in their demand for non-lexical as opposed lexical decoding. The data clearly showed that the MTL system was not involved in single word decoding in skilled, native …

Madrid: Literary Fiction And The Imaginary Urban Destination, C Mansfield, G Busby, M Korstanje Jan 2011

Madrid: Literary Fiction And The Imaginary Urban Destination, C Mansfield, G Busby, M Korstanje

Plymouth Business School

This study selects novels from French and Spanish language traditions, which may not be available to English-speakers, in order to determine if specific aspects throw light on our understanding of Madrid as a destination. Marc Lambron's L'Impromptu de Madrid and Antonio Munoz Molina’s Mysteries of Madrid are taken as proof of the influence the narrative can exert on social daily life and consumption. Narrative foregrounds the fictions which are at stake in imagining the city as destination and also provides a vehicle for presenting the much broader social forces that converge in the author at the time of imagining and …

Comparative Aspects Of Africana Philosophy And The Continental-Analytic Divide, Tommy L. Lott Jan 2011

Comparative Aspects Of Africana Philosophy And The Continental-Analytic Divide, Tommy L. Lott

Comparative Philosophy

Critical engagement involving philosophers trained in continental and analytic traditions often takes its purpose to be a reconciliation of tensions arising from differences in style, or method. Critical engagement in Africana philosophy, however, is rarely focused on method, style, or orientation because philosophic research in this field, regardless of orientation, has had to accommodate its empirical grounding in disciplines outside of philosophy. I focus primarily on the comparative dimensions of three important strands of this research: (1) a history of ideas, (2) a problem-orientation, and (3) a sub-area specialization, to indicate why a need to reconcile tensions between continental and …

Pluralism About Truth In Early Chinese Philosophy: A Reflection On Wang Chong’S Approach, Alexus Mcleod Jan 2011

Pluralism About Truth In Early Chinese Philosophy: A Reflection On Wang Chong’S Approach, Alexus Mcleod

Comparative Philosophy

The debate concerning truth in Classical Chinese philosophy has for the most part avoided the possibility that pluralist theories of truth were part of the classical philosophical framework. I argue that the Eastern Han philosopher Wang Chong (c. 25-100 CE) can be profitably read as endorsing a kind of pluralism about truth grounded in the concept of shi 實, or "actuality". In my exploration of this view, I explain how it offers a different account of the truth of moral and non-moral statements, while still retaining the univocality of the concept of truth (that is, that the concept amounts to …

Razing The Standards: Building And Implementing A Linguistically Informed K-12 Curriculum In A Climate Of Ignorance, Kristin Denham, Anne Lobeck, Michal Temkin Martinez, Jean Mulder, David Pippin, Jeff Reaser, Graeme Trousdale Jan 2011

Razing The Standards: Building And Implementing A Linguistically Informed K-12 Curriculum In A Climate Of Ignorance, Kristin Denham, Anne Lobeck, Michal Temkin Martinez, Jean Mulder, David Pippin, Jeff Reaser, Graeme Trousdale

Mary Ellen Ryder Linguistics Lab

Language study in K‐12 settings should provide a platform for children to develop an awareness of language and its nature; their natural curiosity is well-documented. But in the context of the standards movement, standards set for “the language arts” in the schools neither encourage nor engender such development. Although not alone in such a disciplinary decline—in both general knowledge and the failure to distinguish between ideology and understanding (see, e.g., Battistella 2010)—the news from linguistics seems bleaker. As Mark Liberman noted in his 2007 LSA address, “The current state of ignorance about language among intellectuals is historically unprecedented, functionally maladaptive, …
