The Passion For The Goddess; A Comparative Study On The Reverence Of The Goddess In Contemporary America And Ancient Mesopotamia, Sierra Helm May 2011

The Passion For The Goddess; A Comparative Study On The Reverence Of The Goddess In Contemporary America And Ancient Mesopotamia, Sierra Helm

Honors Senior Capstones and Theses

Through a comparative study of contemporary America and ancient Mesopotamia, the devotional practices directed towards the goddess Inanna in ancient Mesopotamia and towards celebrities in present-day America are analyzed. Celebrities have replaced Inanna in terms of representing exceptional figures exemplifying certain qualities--qualities of motherhood, fertility, sexual appeal, wisdom, intelligence, and even that of the warrior--once associated with the ancient goddess. The position of women within these cultures is an important aspect of the research. In ancient Mesopotamia, the position of women decreased over the millennia, from 4000 BCE to 1000 BCE, in which the people of Sumer, Akkadia, Assyria, and …

Law and Economics as a Rhetorical Perspective in Law

Michael D. Murray

Abstract

This article introduces twenty-first century law and economics as a school of contemporary legal rhetoric to test and improve general legal discourse in areas beyond the economic analysis of law. My article is the first to examine the prescriptive implications of the rhetoric of law and economics for general legal discourse as opposed to examining the benefits and limitations of the economic analysis of law itself. This article advances the conversation in two areas: the study and understanding of the persuasiveness of law and economics and the …

The Anatomical Renaissance, Chloe Zimmerman May 2011

The Anatomical Renaissance, Chloe Zimmerman

Young Historians Conference

The mystical element of the human cadaver has long determined how people interact with it. Ancient cultures often feared the wrath of a higher power arising from an investigation into the sanctity of the human corpse, a fear that for the most part stemmed from religious traditions. Despite the taboos associated with this practice, the dawn of the Italian Renaissance saw a gradual shift in this traditional perspective that allowed for scholars, particularly those in Northern Italy, to explore the subject of anatomy with greater freedom. This paper explores the factors that contributed to the proliferation of anatomical dissection throughout …

The Responsibility Of Intellectuals: Chomsky And Student Opposition To The Vietnam War, Matthew S. Krane May 2011

The Responsibility Of Intellectuals: Chomsky And Student Opposition To The Vietnam War, Matthew S. Krane

Young Historians Conference

The paper offers a critical perspective on the relevance of noted public intellectual Noam Chomsky’s work to American opposition to the Vietnam War. It gives a brief background of the war and United States policies in order to set the stage for an analysis of Chomsky’s critique. Then, the paper situates Chomsky’s main work of dissent, The Responsibility of Intellectuals, in the proper chronological and historical context. Two paradigms of protest by intellectuals and students are noted: logical and reactionary. In Vietnam, it is argued that the former was rooted in the latter, which no intellectual justification touched; therefore, while …

Review Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And The Hasmonean State, By Hanan Eshel, Sidnie White Crawford May 2011

Review Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And The Hasmonean State, By Hanan Eshel, Sidnie White Crawford

Sidnie White Crawford Publications

The purpose of this volume by the late Hanan Eshel is to “summarize the contributions of the scrolls to the understanding of the political history of the Hasmonean state” (p. 1). Eshel, an archaeologist, linguist, and historian who edited several manuscripts from the Judaean Desert finds and excavated in the region of Qumran, was committed to mining the Qumran scrolls for historical information, a position that has come into a certain amount of disfavor in recent scholarship. However, in this balanced and careful volume, Eshel demonstrates that the Qumran scrolls do contain nuggets of valuable information that add to our …

Creating, Planning, And Implementing Community Arts Programs For The 21st Century Adolescent From A Nonprofit Perspective, Georgia Haygood

Graduate Theses

This thesis examined adolescent behaviors, attitudes, and habits as motivators for creating nonprofit youth programs in the 21 51 century. A literature review, interviews with arts leaders, and a case study showed that children ages 10 to18 have access to a variety of after-school programming in local and national organizations. Three local leaders provided insight into the strengths and weaknesses of programs they directed in Charlotte, North Carolina. The youth forums presented in the case study were designed to provide an environment of trust, stability, and structure. The literature review, the interviews, and the case study all showed that the …

Navigating The Fourth Dimension: Nonlinear Narratives In Film, Literature, And Television, Jason R. Boulanger May 2011

Navigating The Fourth Dimension: Nonlinear Narratives In Film, Literature, And Television, Jason R. Boulanger

Senior Honors Projects

Time is often considered the fourth dimension due to the fact that nothing can exist outside the confines of time. Since time is so intrinsic to the very nature of being in the world, creators of film, literature, and television, which are reflective of life, must at least implicitly confront concepts of time and temporality within their work. The intangibility of time presents many difficulties but also a great number of opportunities in accurately portraying its true function within the world.

Many literary works, films, and television programs directly confront concepts of time. Each medium with its own benefits and …

Pre-Kindergarten And Kindergarten Teachers' Perceptions Of Kindergarten Readiness, Joshua Aaron Bressler

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in perception between pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teachers on kindergarten readiness. In addition, this study sought to find out if there was any difference in PEAK assessment scores between those students who attended pre-kindergarten versus those students who did not attend pre-kindergarten.

The instruments used for this research were the Pascagoula Early Assessment for Kindergarten (PEAK) scores and the Kindergarten Readiness Questionnaire. The PEAK scores measured students‟ readiness by assessing their knowledge on language, writing communication, math, and fine motor development from the onset upon entering kindergarten. The …

When Vocations Collide_ A Study Of The Process Of Developing A Military Mobilization Agreement, Mark Moreno

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The ministry of reserve military chaplains has an impact on their civilian ministry setting, the church in particular. Questionnaires were administered and interviews conducted with reserve chaplains and congregations that have already experienced a mobilization and had a mobilization agreement. Findings reveal that the process of developing a mobilization agreement is indicative of the healthy relationship between the reserve chaplain and their congregation.

Playing With Accordion Words, Richard Lederer

Word Ways

Garnering twelve Academy Award nominations and four Oscars, including Best Picture, The King's Speech became, on February 28, the most honored film of the year. Among its many excellencies is the double entendre in its title. The word Speech in The King's Speech means the speaking of George VI, the stammerer who did not want to become king. At the same time and in the same space, the word Speech means the particular address, in 1939, that King George VI delivered to his British subjects exhorting them to join in battle against the Germans.

More Hot Air, Faith W. Eckler

Word Ways

An email from Jeff Grant calls into question my conclusion that the solution to the riddle under discussion is "A Hot Air Balloon." Using the website Google Books, he found that it appeared in the 1782 edition of The Ladies' Diary or Women's Almanac, where its author is identified as Miss Eliza Hurst. It appeared again in the October 6, 1783 edition of The Weekly Entertainer, another British publication, this time without an author given.

The Forgone Limericks Of Lewis Carroll, Jim Puder May 2011

The Forgone Limericks Of Lewis Carroll, Jim Puder

Word Ways

For a fact, Lewis Carroll was well acquainted with limericks from an early age onward. We know this because there has come down to us a set of four original limericks which he "published" when he was only thirteen and still best known as Charles Dodgson. It is also the case that Carroll could hardly have failed to notice the phenomenon when, over the next few decades, Edward Lear's several books of illustrated limericks met with enormous popular success. And it is certainly true that, over the course of his writing career, Carroll published a good deal of light verse …
