Circadian Rhythm And Vigorous Activity: Do They Make A Difference In Executive Function?, Janie Sue Ryland Aug 2011

Circadian Rhythm And Vigorous Activity: Do They Make A Difference In Executive Function?, Janie Sue Ryland

Dissertations

PL 107-110, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, a federally mandated accountability system based on standards, attendance, and dropout rates has forced educational leaders to explore new avenues of student improvement. Research suggests that all three factors are impacted by scheduling preferences that are relative to time of day. The aim of this study was to extend evidence of executive function as it is impacted by time of day and diurnal preference when exposed to vigorous exercise conditions. Data were collected from a sample that included 100 sixth graders (60 females and 40 males) during the spring semester …

Diversity As An Influence On The Choice Of Teaching Positions By Pre-Service Students In Special Education, Tara A. Brooks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With today's increasingly diverse classrooms, teachers are challenged to provide strategies that are effective in ensuring that all students reach success, regardless of race, class, or disability. Teacher education programs are also responsible for providing the type of experiences that prepare graduates to meet the needs of today's diverse classrooms. This study investigated the types of hypothetical teaching positions that pre-service students in special education deem as most ideal and the factors present within those positions. It also sought to determine if any relationship existed between participants' perceptions of beliefs and their choices of teaching positions. Pre-service students in special …

Teaching Methods For Students With Ad/Hd: A Meta-Synthesis, Matt Creamer Jul 2011

Teaching Methods For Students With Ad/Hd: A Meta-Synthesis, Matt Creamer

Special Education Masters Program Theses

This metasynthesis explores teaching methods and strategies for helping middle school students with ADHD. Students with ADHD show more frequent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity compared to their peers. There is a significant difference between students with and without ADHD. The severity of ADHD will increasingly affect students' academic performance and social support in the classroom setting. Teachers can improve student performance by incorporating specific interventions, accommodations, and modifications to the students' academic curriculum. In addition, the concepts of teacher support, parent collaboration, and student medication were also discussed. This text also provides suggestion and advice for future special …

The Egg/Nest Problem: Teaching Language To Students With Autism. A Meta-Synthesis, Ryan Howe Jul 2011

The Egg/Nest Problem: Teaching Language To Students With Autism. A Meta-Synthesis, Ryan Howe

Special Education Masters Program Theses

This meta-synthesis of the literature on methods of instruction to students with ASD examines the various methods of teaching language to students with ASD. While each student learns language at his or her own pace, the author has found that certain methods yield results quicker, and these methods need to be examined critically for any literature on their reliability, efficacy, and scientific research. If a student with autism can be taught language quickly, therefore mitigating any further delays in academic development relative to peers, then this methodology should be made accessible to all teachers of such students.

Pedagogy On The Ethnomathematics--Epistemology Nexus: A Manifesto, Ilhan M. Izmirli Jul 2011

Pedagogy On The Ethnomathematics--Epistemology Nexus: A Manifesto, Ilhan M. Izmirli

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In this paper, we will elaborate on a pronouncement that should be at the onset of any study in epistemology and ethnomathematics, namely, we will argue that learners do think mathematically and it is our responsibility as educators to recognize and appreciate their modes of mathematical reasoning.

We will conduct our study in five parts. Following a brief introduction, in the second part, we will briefly discuss some of the critical tenets of epistemology especially as it applies to mathematics. The third part will be devoted to elucidating the basic nomenclature and hypotheses associated with ethnomathematics. In the fourth part …

Rumors Of Our Rarity Are Greatly Exaggerated: Bad Statistics About Women In Science, Cathy Kessel Jul 2011

Rumors Of Our Rarity Are Greatly Exaggerated: Bad Statistics About Women In Science, Cathy Kessel

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

During the past few years, three bad statistics have been persistently used in discussions of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The first was questionable when it was published in 1983 and has since been widely used. The second came to prominence in 2006 – and now leads an international and perhaps eternal life on the Web. The third may have made its debut in 2007. Its variants occur in popular and academic books and journals, including the 2011 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

This report presents case histories of the three bad statistics, suggests writing …

Communication Deviance, Expressed Emotion, And Family Cohesion In Schizophrenia, Radha G. Carlson Jul 2011

Communication Deviance, Expressed Emotion, And Family Cohesion In Schizophrenia, Radha G. Carlson

Open Access Dissertations

Although schizophrenia is a biologically-based disorder, environmental stress (including stress within familial relationships) plays a major role in the onset and maintenance of symptoms. This study examined family variables that have implications for psychotherapeutic treatment of schizophrenia. Previous research has found Communication Deviance (CD), Expressed Emotion (EE), and family cohesion (FC) to be related to symptom severity. However, the exact nature of the relationship between these constructs is unclear. The current study tested a model whereby the tone and content of family member’s communication (EE) and the sense of family unity (FC) are hypothesized to mediate the relationship between CD …

Temple Of Ancient Knowing: Music Therapy Portraits Of Globalized Indian Identity, Sangeeta Swamy Jul 2011

Temple Of Ancient Knowing: Music Therapy Portraits Of Globalized Indian Identity, Sangeeta Swamy

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This dissertation study assessed ethnic identity in adults of Indian origin through Culturally Centered Music & Imagery (CCMI), an arts-based, psychotherapeutic technique. The purpose was to examine how Indian music, in the context of CCMI, could evoke identity-based imagery and assess Indian identity in a globalized context. Five Indian men and women participated in CCMI sessions, and the qualitative methodology of portraiture was used in this study. The results provide support for the cultural or ethnic unconscious and suggest the potential for CCMI to access this internal, collective space. Results also indicate that CCMI may be used in a clinical …

The Impact Of Gender, Verbal Aggressiveness, And Party Identification-Based Bias On Speaker And Message Perception In Political Speeches, Charlotte Nau Jul 2011

The Impact Of Gender, Verbal Aggressiveness, And Party Identification-Based Bias On Speaker And Message Perception In Political Speeches, Charlotte Nau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

With the number of women in politics growing, the question arises whether they are judged based on the same standards as their male colleagues or if they must adapt to different sets of expectations among the voters. Language Expectancy Theory suggests that women are less effective than men using aggressive persuasion strategies because by being verbally aggressive, they violate social expectations about gender-appropriate conduct and men do not. Three online experiments involving a total of 242 participants were conducted assessing perceptions of speaker credibility, agreement, perceptions of communicative appropriateness, and perceptions of aggressiveness when verbal aggressiveness, gender, and the speaker’s …

Cistronic Stop Signal Ratio Of Mitochondrial Genes Suggests Multiple Waves Of Human Migrations In And Out Of Africa, Naby Yaya Sankhon Jul 2011

Cistronic Stop Signal Ratio Of Mitochondrial Genes Suggests Multiple Waves Of Human Migrations In And Out Of Africa, Naby Yaya Sankhon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The mitochondrial Cistronic Stop Signal Ratios (CSSR) is defined as a series of 12 numerals representing the ratio of TAA, TAG, AGG, and AGA nucleotide trimmers. Primate mitochondria use these nucleotide trimmers as stop codons and many of these trimmers are also found on the 2nd and 3rd reading frames of a cistron. We showed that the average value of the CSSR of all the 13 protein coding genes in mitochondria (genomic CSSR) could be used to define the phylogenetic relationship between the primates. However, the genic CSSR of most human mitochondria are essentially identical, except for the CSSR of …

When I Move, You Move: Coordination In Conversation, Gina M. Caucci Jul 2011

When I Move, You Move: Coordination In Conversation, Gina M. Caucci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Researchers have been interested in the dynamics of human conversation for several decades. One major focus of this line of research has been the mechanisms by which humans coordinate in conversation. To study the coordination of conversation within dyads often requires an understanding of statistical methods, which handle time series data. Traditionally, there are no definitive standards for defining one of the important parameters in time series analysis, window size. Therefore, the purpose of the current project was to elucidate the mechanisms through which conversational coordination emerges by utilizing conversational turn-taking as the basis for choosing the appropriate window size …

Emotional Expression And Depth Processing In Trauma Writing: Impact On Hiv/Aids-Targeted Quality Of Life, Rachel A. Ruffin Jul 2011

Emotional Expression And Depth Processing In Trauma Writing: Impact On Hiv/Aids-Targeted Quality Of Life, Rachel A. Ruffin

Open Access Dissertations

Expressive writing has been linked to positive psychological and health outcomes in general and medical populations, but research examining this intervention in HIV is limited. Higher levels of emotional expression (EE) and depth processing (DP) during writing have been linked to better health status in HIV. Expressive writing has been shown to improve health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in other populations, but has not been examined in HIV. HRQoL is often compromised in HIV+ individuals and therefore improvements in this area are an appropriate goal of psychosocial interventions. This longitudinal study used HLM analyses to examine the relationship between levels …

Ethnic/Racial Differences In The Experience Of Burden And Psychological Outcomes For Caregivers Of Patients With Schizophrenia: The Influence Of Family Cohesion And Interdependence, Giulia C. Suro Jul 2011

Ethnic/Racial Differences In The Experience Of Burden And Psychological Outcomes For Caregivers Of Patients With Schizophrenia: The Influence Of Family Cohesion And Interdependence, Giulia C. Suro

Open Access Theses

Research has demonstrated that taking care of a patient with schizophrenia has serious mental health costs to caregivers including high levels of burden and poorer overall mental health. Research also indicates that caregivers from certain ethnic/racial groups may fare better in this process. Specifically, prior research indicates that African American and Hispanic caregivers often exhibit better mental health than their Caucasian counterparts. Using a sample of 176 caregivers of patients with schizophrenia, the present study was specifically aimed at examining whether three variables (caregiver burden, family cohesion and interdependence) may account for part of the formerly observed ethnic/racial differences in …

Uncovering The Hidden Cognitive Processes And Underlying Dynamics Of Deception, Nicholas David Duran Jul 2011

Uncovering The Hidden Cognitive Processes And Underlying Dynamics Of Deception, Nicholas David Duran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines the processing demands associated with motor responding and verbal statements during deceptive (or deceptive-like) behavior. In the first set of studies presented in Chapter 2, participants motor movements in a false response paradigm revealed signatures of competition with the truth. In a second set of studies presented in Chapter 3, deceptive participants used language that reflected cognitive and social demands inherent to various types of deception. In evaluating both motor and verbal cues, this dissertation provides a comprehensive, multi-modal approach to better understanding the cognitive processes underlying deception. in conducting the motor responding studies, participants' arm movements …

Narratives With An Impact: Linguistic Features Of Cognitive And Emotional Engagement In Transportation, Nick A. Benesh Jul 2011

Narratives With An Impact: Linguistic Features Of Cognitive And Emotional Engagement In Transportation, Nick A. Benesh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Narratives have the ability to impact a person's sense of reality by transporting them into a narrative world. However, the linguistic features of these narratives has been overlooked. Four experiments aimed to investigate which linguistic features may influence these feelings of being transported in text and in film. In the experiments participants read or watched narratives while their reading time, eye behavior, and conscious responses to whether they were feeling transported were recorded. The responses from the first experiment were used to create a formula for scoring narrative on transportability which was subsequently used to predict transportation levels in new …

The Hemispheric Specialization Of The Human Brain And Its Application To Psychoanalytic Principles, David A. Scola, M.D. Jul 2011

The Hemispheric Specialization Of The Human Brain And Its Application To Psychoanalytic Principles, David A. Scola, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Volumes of research have been accumulated over the past decade concerning hemispheric specialization of the human brain. Likewise, over the past century, psychoanalysts have painstakingly unraveled through their clinical observation many of the mysteries of intrapsychic functions. Yet little has been written concerning attempts to integrate these seemingly divergent viewpoints.

It was Freud's hope that a neural basis for his clinical observations and psychological explanations of the human mind would eventually be established . This was not possible in his day, however, so this idea was gradually abandoned. With the advent of computers and high technology, perhaps it is time …

Juanita Williamson And The Linguistic Turn In Composition History, Elizabeth Griffith Baddour Jul 2011

Juanita Williamson And The Linguistic Turn In Composition History, Elizabeth Griffith Baddour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Juanita Williamson (1917-1993) was an important linguist and English scholar. Her work was undertaken during a time of great controversy in academic circles as educators and intellectuals argues about the definition of and place for what was then termed Black English in American classrooms. Her scholarly stance that language was tied to cultural perceptions and constructs led to Williamson's insistence that there was no such thing as Black English because "features used to identify Black English are neither black nor white, but American."Through personal interviews and a comprehensive bibliographic review of Williamson's publications and research in her eponymous archive, this …

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The recent moves to devolve some of the functions and responsibilities of the federal government to the provinces through the 18th Amendment and the decision of the National Finance Commission (NFC) to allocate a larger portion of divisible tax pool to the provinces are highly commendable. These steps have the potential to overcome some of the structural difficulties and micro-economic distortions that have been keeping Pakistan as an underachiever economically and socially. In a multi-ethnic and multi-linguistic society, with one of the federating units being much advanced and enjoying political dominance, de-concentration of powers and equitable sharing of resources among …
