Preliminary Analysis Of An Agent-Based Model For A Tick-Borne Disease, Holly Gaff
Preliminary Analysis Of An Agent-Based Model For A Tick-Borne Disease, Holly Gaff
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Ticks have a unique life history including a distinct set of life stages and a single blood meal per life stage. This makes tick-host interactions more complex from a mathematical perspective. In addition, any model of these interactions must involve a significant degree of stochasticity on the individual tick level. In an attempt to quantify these relationships, I have developed an individual-based model of the interactions between ticks and their hosts as well as the transmission of tick-borne disease between the two populations. The results from this model are compared with those from previously published differential equation based population models. …
Sisters And Smallpox: The Daughters Of Charity As Advocates For The Sick Poor In Nineteenth-Century Los Angeles, Kristine Ashton Gunnell Ph.D.
Sisters And Smallpox: The Daughters Of Charity As Advocates For The Sick Poor In Nineteenth-Century Los Angeles, Kristine Ashton Gunnell Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
The Daughters of Charity were “the key provider of social service in [Los Angeles] before 1880,” opening southern California’s first hospital in 1858. They served anyone, regardless of religion and brought different religious and cultural groups together to help people who were sick. During the smallpox epidemics from the 1860s through the 1880s, the Daughters partnered with officials of Los Angeles to treat the poor. Kristine Gunnell explains how the desire to cut costs, theories of containing disease, and racial and class biases led to the city’s initially inhumane treatment of poor patients. Acting as advocates for the poor, the …

Effect Of Animal Facility Construction On Basal Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal And Renin-Aldosterone Activity In The Rat, Hershel Raff, Eric D. Bruder, William E. Cullinan, Dana R. Ziegler, Eric P. Cohen
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Nearby construction can cause subtle, but important activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in laboratory rats.
Although loud noise and intense vibration are known to alter the behavior and phenotype of laboratory animals, little is known about the effects of nearby construction. We studied the effect of a nearby construction project on the classic stress hormones ACTH, corticosterone, renin, and aldosterone in rats residing in a barrier animal facility before, for the first 3 months of a construction project, and at 1 month after all construction was completed. During some of the construction, noise and vibrations were not obvious to investigators …

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease caused by Leishmania major affecting millions of people throughout the world. It is an emerging concern in the United States due to military establishments in endemic countries. Treatment for the disease is highly toxic and the lack of vaccines emphasizes on the need for alternative drug treatments. Aminopeptidase inhibitors have shown promising results against malaria and tuberculosis. Methionine aminopeptadse-1 (MetAP1) catalyzes the removal of the N-terminal methionine residue from peptides and proteins. The human MetAP1 …

Influenza poses a persistent worldwide threat to the human population. As evidenced by the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, current vaccine technologies are unable to respond rapidly to this constantly diverging pathogen. We tested the utility of adenovirus (Ad) vaccines expressing centralized consensus influenza antigens. Ad vaccines were produced within 2 months and protected against influenza in mice within 3 days of vaccination. Ad vaccines were able to protect at doses as low as 107 virus particles/kg indicating that approximately 1,000 human doses could be rapidly generated from standard Ad preparations. To generate broadly cross-reactive immune responses, centralized consensus antigens were constructed …

Chytridiomycosis is an infectious disease of amphibians caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), and it has played an important role in the worldwide decline of amphibians. My dissertation research examined the consequences of Bdinfections on tadpole feeding biomechanics and activity, pathogen transmission, and host immunology. The keratinized labial teeth of Bd-infected Fowler's Toad (Anaxyrus [=Bufo] fowleri) and Grey Treefrog (Hyla versicolor) tadpoles slipped off of surfaces on which they grazed and were in contact with an algal-covered surface for a shorter duration of time during each feeding cycle. During feeding trials, Bd-infected A. fowleri and H. versicolor tadpoles obtained …

We examine for the first time age-mixing in sexual relationships in a population with very high HIV incidence and prevalence in rural South Africa. The highest levels of age assortativity (the pairing of like with like) were casual partnerships reported by men, the lowest levels were spousal relationships reported by women. Given the age–sex distribution of HIV prevalence in this population, interventions to decrease age-gaps in spousal relationships may be effective in reducing HIV incidence.

Cloning And Expression Of Methionine Aminopeptidase-1 From Trypanosoma Cruzi, Joshua A. Lara^, Miguel Vasquez, Rosa A. Maldonado*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Trypanosoma cruzi affects millions of people worldwide. This unicellular eukaryotic organism is the causative agent of Chagas’ disease. This blood-borne pathogen is transmitted to humans by the hemophagous triatomine or kissing bug. The high toxicity of existing treatments and the lack of vaccines clearly demonstrate the demand for new drugs to treat this parasitosis. We propose to target T. cruzi Methionine Aminopeptidase (TcMetAP1). This enzyme catalyzes the removal of the N-terminal amino acid residues from peptides and proteins. Recent studies have shown promising results of MetAP1 inhibitors against malaria. We, therefore, hypothesize that specific inhibitors of the parasitic MetAP1 will …

Fruit bats of the genus Pteropus occur throughout the Austral-Asian region west to islands off the eastern coast of Africa. Recent phylogenetic analyses of Pteropus from the western Indian Ocean found low sequence divergence and poor phylogenetic resolution among several morphologically defined species. We reexamine the phylogenetic relationships of these taxa by using multiple individuals per species. In addition, we estimate population genetic structure in two well-sampled taxa occurring on Madagascar and the Comoro Islands (P. rufus and P. seychellensis comorensis). Despite finding a similar pattern of low sequence divergence among species, increased sampling provides insight into the phylogeographic history …

Comparative genomic analyses of primates offer considerable potential to define and understand the processes that mold, shape, and transform the human genome. However, primate taxonomy is both complex and controversial, with marginal unifying consensus of the evolutionary hierarchy of extant primate species. Here we provide new genomic sequence (~8 Mb) from 186 primates representing 61 (~90%) of the described genera, and we include outgroup species from Dermoptera, Scandentia, and Lagomorpha. The resultant phylogeny is exceptionally robust and illuminates events in primate evolution from ancient to recent, clarifying numerous taxonomic controversies and providing new data on human evolution. Ongoing speciation, reticulate …
