3rs Practices In Asia And The Pacific Islanda, Pariatamby Agamuthu, Shahul Hamid Fauziah

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This paper is aimed to scrutinize the current 3Rs practices in Asia and the Pacific Islands. It is also aimed to identify the various positive and negative factors which drive the success and failure of the 3Rs practices.Reduction strategies have been proven effective in Korea and Singapore where waste generation has reduced approximately 22% and 10%, respectively. In countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and the Pacific Islands, the implementation of 3Rs strategies into the existing waste management system have been a real struggle due to lack of public participation, low awareness or indifferent attitude of the community. Thus, introduction of …

Carbon Flow In A Sanitary Landfill In Malaysia, Pariatamby Agamuthu, M.A. Muda, M. Venu Mahendra

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Jeram Sanitary Landfill (JSL) received 766,500 tonnes of municipal solid waste in 2010, from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Municipality. Domestic waste, bulky waste, garden waste and domestic sewage sludge are generic classification of waste landfilled in JSL. Waste biomass, in JSL for example, paper, food and garden waste, wood and textiles, constitute 62 % of the MSW. We have attempted to quantify the C flow in a dynamic system i.e sanitary landfill in Malaysia via waste input- output analysis, C element flow and the total Substance Flow Analysis (SFA) of C. Mass balance of C was attempted using STAN software. …

From Tragedy To Opportunity: A Case Study Assessment On The Controlled Disposal Facility At Payatas, Quezon City, Philippines, M.R. Delos Reyes, R. Jimenez, F. Aspiras, Pariatamby Agamuthu

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This paper presents the results of the case study assessment on the controlled dumpsite facility located at Payatas, Quezon City, Philippines. The facility formerly was an open dumpsite, which has a tragic history of more than 30 years of misuse, and on July 1, 2000 a hill of garbage fell on a slum community resulting in the death of nearly 300 people buried alive and leaving hundreds of families homeless. To address this problem, the dumpsite was converted to a controlled-waste disposal facility and undergone construction for an engineered sanitary landfill. Likewise, it was developed from waste to energy facility, …

Landfill Use: A Potential Source Of Toxicant To Aquatic Life, Emenike Chijioke Uche, Shahul Hamid Fauziah, Pariatamby Agamuthu Oct 2011

Landfill Use: A Potential Source Of Toxicant To Aquatic Life, Emenike Chijioke Uche, Shahul Hamid Fauziah, Pariatamby Agamuthu

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Regardless of the beneficial aspect of landfill use, its environmental impact becomes subject of concern to sustainability and development. Landfilling among other things lead to generation of leachate. Therefore this study was undertaken with a view to analyzing the detailed physicalchemical components of leachate from closed sanitary landfill and its associated impact on fish (Clarias batrachus). Whole effluent toxicity (WET) approach was used to evaluate the toxicological effect of leachate on fish. Five different concentrations of the leachate (3.13 – 5.63 % v/v) as observed during the range finding test were applied definitively to obtain the effluent’s lethal concentration (LC50) …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Reduce, Reuse and Recycling or 3Rs practice has been identified as a strategy to improve waste management practices in moving towards sustainable development. Thus, participation from various parties namely the stakeholders and public is very crucial in ensuring the success of the 3R strategies. This paper will analyze the perception of the general public and the relevant stakeholders in Malaysia with regards to 3Rs namely recycling issues. The perception between these two parties will be scrutinized to determine the factors causing such responses. Perceptions from the general public were obtained via public survey involving 655 respondents randomly selected in the …

Policy Evolution Of Solid Waste Management In Malaysia, Pariatamby Agamuthu, Dennis Victor Oct 2011

Policy Evolution Of Solid Waste Management In Malaysia, Pariatamby Agamuthu, Dennis Victor

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This paper seeks to examine the policy evolution of solid waste management in Malaysia and to determine its challenges and opportunities by assessing policy gaps, trends and stakeholders perception of solid waste management in Malaysia. Malaysian solid waste generation has been increasing drastically where solid waste generation was projected to increase from about 9.0 million tonnes in 2000 to about 10.9 million tonnes in 2010, to about 12.8 million tonnes in 2015 and finally to about 15.6 million tonnes in 2020 though national recycling rate is only about 3-5 %. This projected increasing rate of solid waste generation is expected …

Socio-Economic Studies Of Scavengers In Malaysian Landfills, A.H. Zahariman, F.B. Mustafa, F. Shahul Hamid Oct 2011

Socio-Economic Studies Of Scavengers In Malaysian Landfills, A.H. Zahariman, F.B. Mustafa, F. Shahul Hamid

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Accelerating pace of urbanization has resulted with increasing generation of municipal solid waste (MSW). Approximately 90% of these wastes are sent to landfills without any material recovery process. As a result, it creates opportunity for scavenger to retrieve valuable materials from the waste stream. This is observed in most landfill in Malaysia where scavengers collect the recyclables as their source of income. This paper examines the socio-economic of scavengers and describes the management of scavenging activity in three landfill types namely Jeram Sanitary Landfill, Bukit Beruntung Open Dump and Dengkil non-sanitary Landfill, in Selangor, Malaysia. Jeram Sanitary Landfill and Dengkil …

The Use Of Portable Electronic Devices As An Evaluation Tool In The Clinical Setting, Tanya M. Custer, Lisa A. Bartenhagen Oct 2011

The Use Of Portable Electronic Devices As An Evaluation Tool In The Clinical Setting, Tanya M. Custer, Lisa A. Bartenhagen

Posters and Presentations: Radiation Therapy

The Portable Electronic Device (PED) is emerging as an effective tool which can aid in evidence-based practice along with supporting the educational needs of both clinical and classroom training (Honeybourne, 2006; Applegate, 2010). Specific types of PED’s may include personal digital assistants, smart phones, iTouch, iPads, laptops and tablets (Figure 1). Research on the use of mobile devices has been conducted in fields such as medicine and nursing; however, there is little research in the field of radiation science. More research is needed to determine how these devices can be used as an instructional aid and competency assessment tool for …

Comparison Of Outcomes Of Enteral Feeding Via Nasogastric Versus Gastrostomy Tubes In Post Operative Patients With A Principle Diagnosis Of Squamous Cell Carcinoma Of The Oral Cavity, Zain-Ul-Abedeen Sobani, Shehzad Ghaffar, Beenish Nisar Ahmed Oct 2011

Comparison Of Outcomes Of Enteral Feeding Via Nasogastric Versus Gastrostomy Tubes In Post Operative Patients With A Principle Diagnosis Of Squamous Cell Carcinoma Of The Oral Cavity, Zain-Ul-Abedeen Sobani, Shehzad Ghaffar, Beenish Nisar Ahmed

Section of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery

OBJECTIVES: Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity has a profound impact on a patient's nutritional intake, 40-50% of head and neck cancer patients have a markedly impaired nutritional status at the time of their initial presentation. Studies show that patients who have better nutritional status have fewer complications and a better survival rate. Therefore, enteral nutritional support plays an important part in their management. Due to the lack of relevant data, surgeons help patients make informed decisions regarding their mode of nutritional support and perform gastrostomy or place nasogastric tube depending on the patient's preference. This study addresses the …

Dipo And Other Rites Of Passage In Odumase Krobo, Cam Ostrow Oct 2011

Dipo And Other Rites Of Passage In Odumase Krobo, Cam Ostrow

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

I was based in Odumase Krobo for about three weeks. There, I completed over twenty interviews with people ranging from young boys and girls, elders, parents, Queen Mothers, priests and priestesses, devout Christians, and many others I met around town. I also lived with a family who had one boy and one girl and was able to observe how their upbringing differed according to their genders.

I was able to discover the dipo process mostly in its entirety, save for the parts which are considered sacred and which I was therefore unable to hear about. I also discovered that dipo …

Migration, Vulnerability And Xenophobia: Central African Refugee And Asylum Seekers’ Access To Health Services In Durban, South Africa, Cathy Kaplan Oct 2011

Migration, Vulnerability And Xenophobia: Central African Refugee And Asylum Seekers’ Access To Health Services In Durban, South Africa, Cathy Kaplan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In 1998, South Africa passed historic legislation that bridged international conventions on refugees and asylum seekers with the protections and rights defined in the South African Constitution and Bill of Rights. The 1998 refugees act defined specific rights that refugees and asylum seekers are entitled in South Africa, the most important of which include the provision of legal and immigration documentation, employment, adequate housing, and health and social services. When asylum seekers arrive in Durban, many are in the need of immediate health services as a result of long journeys, pre-existing conditions, pregnancy, or illnesses contracted in refugee camps throughout …

Effective, Efficient Health Care Reform The United States And Swiss Health Care Systems: A Comparative Analysis What Can The U.S. Learn From The Swiss Experience?, Rebecca Dittrich Oct 2011

Effective, Efficient Health Care Reform The United States And Swiss Health Care Systems: A Comparative Analysis What Can The U.S. Learn From The Swiss Experience?, Rebecca Dittrich

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Home to 45 million people without health insurance while still spending 17% of its GDP on health care expenses, the United States has been in need of a massive health care overhaul for quite some time. Some have speculated that the Swiss system may be an ideal model for health care reform, and in fact, many aspects of the newly instated Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) do reflect areas of LAMal, Swiss health care law. This paper evaluates the Swiss and United States health care systems (under ACA), their similarities and differences, and the pros and cons of …

Tattered: Why The Tibetan Carpet Industry Of Nepal Is Declining, And How To Mend It, Dustin Becker Oct 2011

Tattered: Why The Tibetan Carpet Industry Of Nepal Is Declining, And How To Mend It, Dustin Becker

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Tibetan carpet industry of Nepal, once one of the country's leading exports, is quickly becoming unprofitable and uncompetitive compared to regional competitors. This is a trend that started over a decade ago, but requires renewed focus due to current alarming trends. My objective was to uncover why carpet manufacturers in Nepal are suffering from a decline in sales, and what separates the manufacturers who are still in business from those who are not. I stayed in the community of Boudha, where most of the carpet business owners live or work, and conducted interviews and electronic written correspondences with several …

Global Law And The Environment, Robert V. Percival Oct 2011

Global Law And The Environment, Robert V. Percival

Washington Law Review

This Article explores three areas in which globalization is profoundly affecting the development of a global environmental law. First, countries increasingly are borrowing law and regulatory innovations from one another to respond to common environmental problems. Although this is not an entirely new phenomenon, it is occurring at an unprecedented pace. Second, lawsuits seeking to hold companies liable for environmental harm they have caused outside their home countries are raising new questions concerning the appropriate venue for such transnational liability litigation and the standards courts should apply for enforcement of foreign judgments. Third, nongovernmental organizations are playing an increasingly important …

Beyond Absurdity: Climate Regulation And The Case For Restricting The Absurd Results Doctrine, Katherine Kirklin O'Brien Oct 2011

Beyond Absurdity: Climate Regulation And The Case For Restricting The Absurd Results Doctrine, Katherine Kirklin O'Brien

Washington Law Review

The absurd results doctrine of statutory interpretation allows courts to depart from clear legislative text when a literal reading would be “absurd.” Traditionally, courts defined an absurd result as one that offends fundamental social values. Over time, however, courts have expanded the concept of legal absurdity to include outcomes that do not violate moral principles, but instead present regulatory burdens deemed too onerous to reflect congressional intent. In June 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) invoked this expansive reading of the absurd results doctrine to support a regulation known as the “Tailoring Rule,” which the agency promulgated as part …
