When It Comes To Poverty Reduction, Less May Be More, Singapore Management University Oct 2011

When It Comes To Poverty Reduction, Less May Be More, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

It is a widely accepted belief that people should be better off as the economy expands: The greater the growth, the greater the likelihood that poverty numbers will decline. While there are many good and valid reasons to hold this to be true, exceptions exist, where the lives of the poor have improved rapidly despite slow growth, or where poverty actually increases along with strong economic growth.

When It Comes To Poverty Reduction, Less May Be More, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Most people expect strong economic growth to be closely linked to a decline in poverty. By the same token, fast-developing economies should experience fast-shrinking poverty rates. But, in reality, this link between growth and poverty is seldom consistent. In 'Small Works: Poverty and Economic Development in Southwest China', political scientist John A. Donaldson discusses an alternative take on mediating the effects of economic growth on the poor through a multi-method study of two Chinese provinces.

Perspectives Of Suburban Public School Teachers On The Characteristics Of Students At-Risk For Dropping Out Of School, Michael J. Sollitto, Robert K. Gable

K-12 Education

This study focuses on a major problem facing today’s educators: high school dropouts. Numerous studies have been conducted to identify the reasons that students drop out of school and programs that may address the needs of students at-risk for dropping out of school. Literature in this area was reviewed to identify what can be learned from these studies. Research questions addressed differences in teacher perspectives of the characteristics of elementary, middle, and high school struggling students. Differences in teachers’ perspectives based on tenure and type of teaching assignment were examined. A sequential, mixed methods approach was taken. The researchers began …

Intratracheal Instillation Of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Induces Hepatic Toxicity In Male Sprague-Dawley Rats, Siva Krishna Nalabotu, Madhukar Babu Kolli, William E. Triest, Jane Y. Ma, Nandini Dpk Manne, Anjaiah Katta, Hari S. Addagarla, Kevin M. Rice, Eric R. Blough

MIIR Faculty Research

Background: Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles have been posited to have both beneficial and toxic effects on biological systems. Herein, we examine if a single intratracheal instillation of CeO2 nanoparticles is associated with systemic toxicity in male Sprague-Dawley rats.

Methods and results: Compared with control animals, CeO2 nanoparticle exposure was associated with increased liver ceria levels, elevations in serum alanine transaminase levels, reduced albumin levels, a diminished sodium-potassium ratio, and decreased serum triglyceride levels (P < 0.05). Consistent with these data, rats exposed to CeO2nanoparticles also exhibited reductions in liver weight (P < 0.05) and dose-dependent hydropic degeneration, hepatocyte enlargement, sinusoidal dilatation, and accumulation of granular material. No histopathological alterations were observed in the kidney, spleen, and heart. Analysis of serum biomarkers suggested an elevation of acute phase reactants and markers of hepatocyte injury in the rats exposed to CeO2 nanoparticles.

Conclusion: Taken together, these data suggest that intratracheal instillation …

The Social Networking Adoption Matrix (Sam) Prototype: Helping Healthcare Organizations Effectively Choose Social Networking Technologies, Alan Rea, Robert Landeros, Tristan Stempien

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Healthcare organizations looking to increase communication and educational offerings to their community, providers, and healthcare consumers need to implement social networking technologies. However, without a thorough needs analysis a healthcare organization may waste valuable limited resources with very little return on investment. In this paper, the authors discuss preliminary research targeted to help organizations adopt relevant technologies using a Social Networking Adoption Matrix (SAM). SAM helps organizations decide which social networking technology categories are necessary to meet their strategic goals via the Social Network Adoption Matrix Expert System (SAMES). As a result, organizations can successfully increase communication opportunities and balance …

Winning Percentage And Attendance In The Nhl, Daniel Peters Oct 2011

Winning Percentage And Attendance In The Nhl, Daniel Peters

Sport Management Undergraduate

This research extends the analysis of winning on attendance, looking specifically at its prevalence in the National Hockey League. Data was collected from 2005-2006 through the 2010-2011 season for the each of the league’s 30 teams. Each club’s winning percentage at the midway point of each year was noted, and attendance at each of the remaining home games was analyzed. Statistical analysis revealed that the only season in which there was a significant relationship between midpoint winning percentage and second half attendance was 2010-2011. This study also explored patterns of attendance across the league over this six-year span.

Springfield And Greene County, Missouri Census Information, 1836-2010, Byron Stewart Oct 2011

Springfield And Greene County, Missouri Census Information, 1836-2010, Byron Stewart

MSU Libraries

According to the Missouri State Archives, the earliest census taken in Missouri was actually of the Missouri Territory in the years 1814 and 1817, and only free white males were counted. In the year 1821, Missouri was granted statehood, and a state census was taken that year. Then, from 1824 and every four years after that through 1876 (except for 1872), a state census was taken throughout Missouri. Meanwhile, the decennial federal census, which began in 1790, did not begin in Missouri until 1830, but neither Springfield nor Greene County was listed until the 1840 census. Greene County was legally …

Profile: Nurturing The Entrepreneurial Spirit, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

Successful entrepreneurs have an uncanny ability to envision the future, to anticipate trends even before they emerge, and to imagine things as they might be. Entrepreneurs aren’t afraid to take risks, to go out on a limb for an idea they have, even if it bucks the tide. In this edition of Profile, you will encounter examples of individuals who exhibit this entrepreneurial spirit, a disposition that characterized this institution from its very founding.
