Birth Order And Its Effect On Depression In Adults, Sambul Zaidi Oct 2011

Birth Order And Its Effect On Depression In Adults, Sambul Zaidi

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to find the relationship between birth order and depression. It hypothesized that first-borns are more susceptible to depression than laterborns. Subjects were male and female undergraduate students from Rowan University. These students were over the age of 18 and were kept anonymous. The study collected data from fifteen participants by using a Birth Order survey which included questions about personality traits that pertain to a certain birth order position. Each subject was asked to indicate the exact birth order rank and if they have experienced depression or signs of depression. Results showed that differences …

Mutations in rumi result in a temperature-sensitive loss of Notch signaling in Drosophila. Drosophila Rumi is a soluble, endoplasmic reticulum-retained protein with a CAP10 domain that functions as a protein O-glucosyltransferase. In human and mouse genomes, three potential Rumi homologues exist: one with a high degree of identity to Drosophila Rumi (52%), and two others with lower degrees of identity but including a CAP10 domain (KDELC1 and KDELC2). Here we show that both mouse and human Rumi, but not KDELC1 or KDELC2, catalyze transfer of glucose from UDPglucose to an EGF repeat from human factor VII. Similarly, human Rumi, but …

A Comparison Of The Primary And Secondary Wood Products Sectors In Louisiana, Richard P. Vlosky Oct 2011

A Comparison Of The Primary And Secondary Wood Products Sectors In Louisiana, Richard P. Vlosky

Faculty Publications

As part of an ongoing research program, the Louisiana forest products industry is surveyed every five years to identify salient issues, challenges, and opportunities. In this paper, we compare the results from two studies conducted on the primary and secondary sectors in Louisiana. In the past, we produced two papers based on research results, one for the primary and one for the secondary sector. However, this paper compares the answers to questions asked in both surveys. Louisiana's forests represent an important resource for the state, both in terms of income to landowners and as inputs to the forest products industry. …

Individual Differences In Anxiety Sensitivity: The Role Of Emotion Regulation And Alexithymia, Amrit Kaur Oct 2011

Individual Differences In Anxiety Sensitivity: The Role Of Emotion Regulation And Alexithymia, Amrit Kaur

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The literature has shown anxiety sensitivity to be a significant risk factor in the development of pathological anxiety. Recent theoretical models have also emphasized the additional importance of emotion regulation in predicting the development of anxiety disorders. The present study examined the interactive influence of anxiety sensitivity and emotion regulatory strategies on anxiety symptoms in an ethnically diverse sample recruited in Singapore in order to determine the most appropriate anxiety prevention strategies to pursue. Results indicate that emotion regulation skills had a much greater effect on anxiety levels in this non-clinical sample than anxiety sensitivity and, second, that emotion regulation …

Ccl2/Mcp-I Genotype-Phenotype Relationship In Latent Tuberculosis Infection, Rabia Hussain, Ambreen Ansari, Najeeha Talat, Zahra Hasan, Ghaffar Dawood Oct 2011

Ccl2/Mcp-I Genotype-Phenotype Relationship In Latent Tuberculosis Infection, Rabia Hussain, Ambreen Ansari, Najeeha Talat, Zahra Hasan, Ghaffar Dawood

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Among the known biomarkers, chemokines, secreted by activated macrophages and T cells, attract groups of immune cells to the site of infection and may determine the clinical outcome. Association studies of CCL-2/MCP-1 -2518 A/G functional SNP linked to high and low phenotypes with tuberculosis disease susceptibility have shown conflicting results in tuberculosis. Some of these differences could be due the variability of latent infection and recent exposure in the control groups. We have therefore carried out a detailed analysis of CCL-2 genotype SNP -2518 (A/G transition) with plasma CCL-2 levels and related these levels to tuberculin skin test positivity in …

Knowledge, Perceptions And Myths Regarding Infertility Among Selected Adult Population In Pakistan: A Cross-Sectional Study, Sumera Ali, Raafay Sophie, Ayesha M. Imam, Faisal I. Khan, Syed F. Ali, Annum Shaikh, Syed Farid-Ul-Hasnain

Community Health Sciences

Background: The reported prevalence of infertility in Pakistan is approximately 22% with 4% primary and 18% secondary infertility. Infertility is not only a medical but also a social problem in our society as cultural customs and perceived religious dictums may equate infertility with failure on a personal, interpersonal, or social level. It is imperative that people have adequate knowledge about infertility so couples can seek timely medical care and misconceptions can be rectified. We aim to assess the knowledge, perception and myths regarding infertility and suggest ways to improve it.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out by interviewing a sample …

Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds As Anticancer Agents: Evaluation Of Synthesis And In Vitro Cytotoxicity, Debasish Bandyopadhyay, Jose C. Granados, John D. Short, Bimal K. Banik Oct 2011

Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds As Anticancer Agents: Evaluation Of Synthesis And In Vitro Cytotoxicity, Debasish Bandyopadhyay, Jose C. Granados, John D. Short, Bimal K. Banik

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are considered to be significant environmental carcinogens. Additionally, various planar ring systems are capable of intercalating with DNA, leading to a number of drugs that possess chemotherapeutic activity. In this study, three new polyaromatic compounds with a side chain were synthesized, and spectroscopic as well as elemental analyses were performed. The addition of the long chains to either chrysene or pyrene caused a red-shift in the spectral emission when compared to the corresponding polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons itself. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of the three novel polyaromatic compounds was evaluated in vitro in a panel of cultured mammalian …
