Fabrication And Application Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Templated Silicon Nanomaterials, Jun Song
Fabrication And Application Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Templated Silicon Nanomaterials, Jun Song
Theses and Dissertations
A process, called carbon nanotube templated microfabrication (CNT-M) makes high aspect ratio microstructures out of a wide variety of materials by growing patterned vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) as a framework and then infiltrating various materials into the frameworks by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). By using the CNT-M procedure, a partial Si infiltration of carbon nanotube frameworks results in porous three dimensional microscale shapes consisting of silicon-carbon nanotube composites. The addition of thin silicon shells to the vertically aligned CNTs (VACNTs) enables the fabrication of robust silicon nanostructures with edibility to design a wide range of geometries. Nanoscale dimensions are …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
The molecular bases of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain unclear. We used a lipidomic approach to identify lipid abnormalities in the brains of subjects with AD (N = 37) compared to age-matched controls (N = 17). The analyses revealed statistically detectable elevations in levels of non-esterified monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and mead acid (20:3n-9) in mid-frontal cortex, temporal cortex and hippocampus of AD patients. Further studies showed that brain mRNAs encoding for isoforms of the rate-limiting enzyme in MUFAs biosynthesis, stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD-1, SCD-5a and SCD-5b), were elevated in subjects with AD. The monounsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratio ('desaturation index')--displayed a strong …

Optimized Hyperspectral Imagery Anomaly Detection Through Robust Parameter Design, Francis M. Mindrup
Optimized Hyperspectral Imagery Anomaly Detection Through Robust Parameter Design, Francis M. Mindrup
Theses and Dissertations
Anomaly detection algorithms for hyperspectral imagery (HSI) are an important first step in the analysis chain which can reduce the overall amount of data to be processed. The actual amount of data reduced depends greatly on the accuracy of the anomaly detection algorithm implemented. Most, if not all, anomaly detection algorithms require a user to identify some initial parameters. These parameters (or controls) affect overall algorithm performance. Regardless of the anomaly detector being utilized, algorithm performance is often negatively impacted by uncontrollable noise factors which introduce additional variance into the process. In the case of HSI, the noise variables are …

Information Literacy: A Prerequisite To Evidence-Based Nursing, Kimberly Dawn Belcik
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Information literacy is an ambiguous term that many professionals in various fields, including nursing, have attempted to define. It is emphasized as a skill nurses should have yet it has not been conceptualized within nursing. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the concept of information literacy. This analysis emphasizes information literacy in the context of nursing as a prerequisite to evidence-based nursing practice.
Methods: The method used to analyze the concept is the Walker and Avant method. All steps of the Walker and Avant method are used with the exemption of the invented and illegitimate cases in …

Biomimicry: Architecture That Imitates Nature’S Functions, Forms And Parts, Kostika Spaho
Architecture Theses and Projects
Architecture imitates nature’s functions, forms, and parts in order to solve the problems of sustainability, efficiency, strength, durability and more. Nature displays its solutions to these problems through endless examples, which appear everywhere on this planet. Such designs represent nature’s work, which has evolved over a “3.8 billion year period.” Nature’s creations are carefully articulated in order to fit in with their context, and to optimize their need for energy and material. It is likely that the answers to most of our design questions lie amid the surrounding organic fabric.

Differences In Mastery And Self-Esteem In Culturally Diverse Adolescent Females, Ellen R. Long-Middleton
Differences In Mastery And Self-Esteem In Culturally Diverse Adolescent Females, Ellen R. Long-Middleton
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Mastery, a global sense of control over one's life, and self-esteem, the value placed on oneself, are psychological characteristics associated with numerous health-enhancing behaviors. Developing interventions to fortify and enhance an individual's sense of mastery and self-esteem may serve to promote health-enhancing behaviors. Yet, differences in mastery and self-esteem among individuals of diverse cultures are not well understood, nor are the ways in which mastery and self-esteem impact health-enhancing behaviors. This is particularly so in adolescent females. Hence, the purpose of this investigation was to determine if differences existed in mastery and self-esteem levels in diverse cultural groups of …
Hiv Risk Reduction Behaviors In Adolescent Females: The Influence Of Mastery And Self-Esteem, Ellen R. Long-Middleton
Hiv Risk Reduction Behaviors In Adolescent Females: The Influence Of Mastery And Self-Esteem, Ellen R. Long-Middleton
Biennial Convention (CONV)
AIDS is a leading cause of death in adolescent and young adult populations. Heterosexual transmission of HIV is the fastest growing mode of infection among women, and minority populations are affected disproportionately. It is important to identify and assess psychological determinants of HIV risk reduction behaviors, in order that health care interventions may be tailored to maximize a client's preventive efforts. Hence, the concepts of mastery and self-esteem were investigated in relationship to HIV risk reduction behaviors in a culturally diverse group of adolescent females. Mastery is a global sense of control over one's life, and self-esteem is the value …

Early Exposure To Paraquat Sensitizes Dopaminergic Neurons To Subsequent Silencing Of Pink1 Gene Expression In Mice., Hongxia Zhou, Cao Huang, Jianbin Tong, Xugang Xia
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Environmental exposure, genetic modification, and aging are considered risky for Parkinson's disease (PD). How these risk factors cooperate to induce progressive neurodegeneration in PD remains largely unknown. Paraquat is an herbicide commonly used for weed and grass control. Exposure to paraquat is associated with the increased incidence of PD. In contrast to familial PD, most sporadic PD cases do not have genetic mutation, but may suffer from partial dysfunction of neuron-protective genes as aging. Using conditional transgenic RNAi, we showed that temporal silencing of PINK1 expression in adult mice increased striatal dopamine, the phenotype that could not be induced by …

Dengue Fever In Tegucigalpa, Honduras: Use Of The Explanatory Model In A Sample Of Urban Neighborhoods To Contextualize And Define Dengue Fever Among Community Participants, Jose Enrique Hasemann
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project elucidated the explanatory model of dengue fever held by members of urban communities in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The study was conducted over a four-month period from May-August of 2011, and it was divided into two stages. The first stage of the project consisted of volunteer participation with dengue fever surveillance brigades in the three communities with the highest incidence of dengue fever during the beginning of 2011. This initial stage employed participant observation as its research method. The second stage was conducted in a different community within Tegucigalpa. The primary research methods employed during the second stage of the …
