Usefulness Of The Echocardiographic Multi-Parameter Score (Emps) In Evaluating Left Ventricular Global Heart Function, Bingyuan Zhou, Junhua Yang, Xiangjun Yang, Yongming He, Caiming Zhao, Sudan Xu, Huifeng Wang
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
In this study, we established a new index by combining several echocardiographic parameters to quantify heart failure. We selected 233 consecutive patients who underwent both echocardiographic and plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) tests within 24 hours after referral for suspected heart failure. The echocardiographic parameters included systolic function, diastolic function, left ventricular chamber remodeling, valvular lesions, systolic pulmonary arterial pressure, and regional wall-motion abnormality. Each factor was scored from 1 to 3 points according to its severity. The total point from these 6 factors is the echocardiographic multi-parameter score (EMPS).
The EMPS for 37, 51, 77, and 38 patients from …

Prehypertension: A Meta-Analysis Of The Epidemiology, Risk Factors, And Predictors Of Progression, Xiaofan Guo, Liling Zou, Xingang Zhang, Jue Li, Liqiang Zheng, Zhaoqing Sun, Jian Hu, Nathan D Wong, Yingxian Sun
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
We investigated the prevalence and risk factors of prehypertension, as well as the predictors of progression from prehypertension to hypertension. To do this, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, after unrestricted searches of PubMed and The Cochrane Library through September 2010. In addition, we reviewed references, major textbooks, and review articles. Pooled prevalence, standardized mean differences, and odds ratios were estimated by using a random-effects model.
Twenty-six articles met our inclusion criteria; these included 20 cross-sectional and 6 longitudinal studies, with a total sample of 250,741 individuals. The overall pooled prevalence of prehypertension was …

Studies have shown that long-term vagal stimulation is protective against ventricular fibrillation; however, the effects of acute vagal stimulation during ventricular fibrillation in the normal heart have not been investigated. We examined the effects of acute vagal stimulation on ventricular fibrillation in a canine model. In 4 dogs, we induced 30-second periods of ventricular fibrillation by means of intraventricular pacing. During 2 of the 4 periods of fibrillation that we analyzed, vagal stimulation was delivered through electrodes in the caudal ends of the vagus nerves. Noncontact unipolar electrograms were recorded from 3 ventricular regions: the basal septum, apical septum, and …

Anger And Compassion On The Picket Line: Ethnography And Emotion In The Study Of Westboro Baptist Church, Rebecca Barrett-Fox
Anger And Compassion On The Picket Line: Ethnography And Emotion In The Study Of Westboro Baptist Church, Rebecca Barrett-Fox
Journal of Hate Studies
Feminist ethnographic methods stress the role of empathy for research subjects and researchers’ willingness for their work to be useful to their subjects. When the research subjects are “unloved groups,” though—people whose actions or beliefs are hateful or harmful—some ethnographers argue that such empathy and empowerment is misplaced or leads to uncritical scholarship. In this reflection on the author’s ethnographic study of Westboro Baptist Church, a small Kansas-based congregation infamous for preaching its anti-gay theology at funerals, including the funerals of fallen servicemen and -women, she questions the usefulness of denying an emotional connection with “hatemongers.” Instead, she argues for …
‘Combating The Scourge’: Constructing The Masculine ‘Other’ Through U.S. Government Anti-Trafficking Campaigns, Sarah L. Steele
‘Combating The Scourge’: Constructing The Masculine ‘Other’ Through U.S. Government Anti-Trafficking Campaigns, Sarah L. Steele
Journal of Hate Studies
The author argues that nativism, racism, and anti-immigrant sentiment presented by representatives of the U.S. government in the context of human trafficking leaves both victims and traffickers portrayed as one-dimensional criminals. Current anti-trafficking regimes embody and restate xenophobic reactions directed against illegal migrant men, while often disguising the role domestic actors have in trafficking. Additionally, the images presented imply that traffickers are lacking in “proper” masculinity, particularly of the sort embraced by Americans. This article not only explores how government anti-trafficking statements made between 1998 and 2010 create and reinforce divides in masculinities based on regimes of racial domination, but …

Policing Hatred: A Case Study Of An English Police Force, Jordan Blair Woods
Journal of Hate Studies
This article makes an important contribution to the field of hate studies by advancing the understanding of hate crime policing in the United Kingdom. The article presents an ethnographic case study on hate crime policing within a small-city police station in England. The study focused primarily on the police station’s Community Cohesion Unit (CCU), which was responsible for supporting hate crime informants, and for monitoring and assisting police officers handling hate incidents and hate crimes. The case study is mostly descriptive and exploratory in nature. Its primary objective is to provide needed insight into the inner workings of a police …

Applied Anthropology And Anti-Hate Activism, Jennifer Schlegel
Journal of Hate Studies
This paper examines my journey from activist, to educator, to researcher, and back, and the implications the journey has for developing effective anti-hate collaborations and educational practices. After being notified that my name and contact information had been posted on a white supremacist’s website, I re-considered my role as an anti-hate activist and turned to teaching. Combining my activist experience with my anthropology background, I developed a course, “Hate Across Cultures.” Using multi-disciplinary academic resources and featuring guest lectures from representatives of various government agencies, this class provides a space for students to learn and talk about the origins of …

Beyond the Hot Debate: Social and Policy Implications of Climate Change in Australia by Lawrence Niewójt and Adam Hughes Henry
This paper discusses the social and policy implications of climate change on the world’s most arid populated continent. Warmer average temperatures will have real, identifiable impacts on human health, marginalized sectors of the population, and the sustainability of rural and coastal communities in Australia. By analysing indicators of environmental health and social welfare we can identify emerging threats posed by a warmer climate. Policy-makers will need to devise a suite …

Equality And Differences, John M. Finnis
Equality And Differences, John M. Finnis
Journal Articles
This revised and annotated version of the H.L.A. Hart Memorial lecture in the University of Oxford in June 2011 has some significant differences in coverage from the essay of the same title published in the American Journal of Jurisprudence 56 (2011) 17-44, including a brief discussion of Waldron’s treatment of basic equality and Cohen’s “luck-egalitarianism”. The object of the lecture is to establish the grounds of basic human equality, and to indicate how neglect of non-basic inequalities and of preconditions for sustainable common good tends to ensure that legal measures promoting equality rights and condemning ‘discrimination’ yield serious injustices (violations …
International Cooperation And The Patent-Antitrust Intersection, Stephen Yelderman
International Cooperation And The Patent-Antitrust Intersection, Stephen Yelderman
Journal Articles
Commentators have long recognized the need to coordinate questions at the patent-antitrust intersection with other policy levers available under patent law. In the international context, however, control over patent policy has been fractured and entrusted to diverse decisionmakers. Many details of patent law are tightly coordinated by international agreement, while others related to antitrust are left to national discretion. This Article evaluates the consequences of this fracture, and notes ways in which the prevailing treaty regimes (the Paris Convention and the TRIPS Agreement) distort incentives for national policymaking. National discretion at the patent-antitrust intersection can be expected to result in …

Do Joint Parenting Laws Make Any Difference?, Margaret F. Brinig, Douglas W. Allen

Using a unique data set on divorcing couples, we analyze the effects of a change in legal entitlement on the outcomes for divorcing couples. In particular, we analyze the 1997 change to custody provisions in the State of Oregon. Prior to 1997, Oregon assigned custody, based on the discretion of the court, in the best interests of the child. This was changed to a presumption- of joint parenting, which manifests in the courts encouraging and imposing joint (or shared) custody in cases that otherwise would have had sole custody arrangements. We find that the law had several implications for divorce …

The United States economy is struggling to recover from its worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. After several huge doses of conventional macroeconomic stimulus - deficit-spending and monetary stimulus - policymakers are understandably eager to find innovative no-cost ways of sustaining growth both in the short and long runs. In response to this challenge, the Kauffman Foundation convened a number of America’s leading legal scholars and social scientists during the summer of 2010 to present and discuss their ideas for changing legal rules and policies to promote innovation and accelerate U.S. economic growth. This meeting led to the publication …

The Texas Heart Institute Journal
We studied prospectively whether atherosclerotic progression in apolipoprotein-E knockout mice could be noninvasively and accurately measured by use of high-resolution ultrasonographic biomicroscopy. We examined the correlation between the ultrasonographic characterization of ascending aortic atherosclerotic plaque and plasma C-reactive protein, interleukin-1, and interleukin-6 levels in these mice.
In 4 age groups (8, 16, 24, and 32 wk) of 8 male knockout mice each (atherosclerotic groups) and age-matched male C57BL/6 mice (control groups), we used ultrasonographic biomicroscopy to measure maximal plaque thickness or intima-media thickness in the ascending aorta. We compared the findings with corresponding histologic measurements, and we measured plasma C-reactive …

Endovascular Repair Of Aortoesophageal And Aortobronchial Fistulae, Roberto Chiesa, Andrea Kahlberg, Yamume Tshomba, Enrico M Marone, Massimiliano M Marrocco-Trischitta, Germano Melissano
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
Aortoesophageal fistulae (AEF) and aortobronchial fistulae (ABF) are uncommon, but are in general fatal if left untreated. Conventional treatment requires surgical replacement of the thoracic aorta, along with several adjunctive procedures to repair the esophageal or tracheobronchial lesion. The mortality rates associated with open surgery reach 61% in cases of primary fistula and 78% in secondary fistula.
Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has been proposed as an alternative strategy to surgical management.Although less invasive, this technique has important limitations in treating AEF and ABF, the chief of which is the high risk of graft contamination. Moreover, we still lack sufficient data …

Stability Analysis Of Anchored Rock Slopes Against Plane Failure Subjected To Surcharge And Seismic Loads, Md M. Hossain
Stability Analysis Of Anchored Rock Slopes Against Plane Failure Subjected To Surcharge And Seismic Loads, Md M. Hossain
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The stability analysis of rock slopes has been a challenging task for engineers
because the rock mass constituting the slope often has discontinuities in various
forms, resulting in different types of slope failures. The plane failure is one of the
rock slope failures observed in field situations when the discontinuity is in the form
of joint planes. There are several parameters including surcharge and seismic loads
that govern the stability of the rock slope against plane failure in field projects. The
limit equilibrium approach for the estimation of the factor of safety of the rock slope
against plane failure has …
The Response Of Banksia Roots To Change In Water Table Level In A Mediterranean-Type Environment, Caroline Canham
The Response Of Banksia Roots To Change In Water Table Level In A Mediterranean-Type Environment, Caroline Canham
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
For phreatophytic plants to persist in a given habitat they need to maintain a functional connection to the water table, and the capacity for roots to respond to changes in the water table is a key aspect of this. If root growth is limited by season, plants may not be able to grow roots to adjust to changes in the water table at a particular time of the year. The redistribution of roots, particularly the capacity for roots to follow the water table down in summer and autumn months, is vital for phreatophytic plants to maintain a functional connection with …
New Perspectives On Melanoma: The Role Of Pax3, Sandra Medic
New Perspectives On Melanoma: The Role Of Pax3, Sandra Medic
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Background: Cutaneous melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer, arising in cutaneous melanocytes. The transcription factor PAX3 is critical for the proper development of neural crest lineages including melanocytes. Melanocytic cells show continued PAX3 expression from melanoblast formation in the neural crest to their differentiation into melanocytes. While many studies clarify the importance of PAX3 in embryonic development of melanocytes, less well understood, and more perplexing, is the continued PAX3 expression in adult skin melanocytes. By contrast PAX3 is frequently found in melanomas and naevi, and its expression correlates with melanoma staging. In this study we explore the multiple …
The Relationship Between Residential Satisfaction, Sense Of Community, Sense Of Belonging And Sense Of Place In A Western Australian Urban Planned Community, Kylie M. Smith
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Residential satisfaction is important as it contributes to a person‟s psychological wellbeing and quality of life. Residential satisfaction develops due to physical factors such as the provision of parks and amenities within a community, social factors such as a feeling of belongingness to the community and social support within the community and personal factors such as homeownership and length of residence. Sense of community, sense of belonging and sense of place also influence residential satisfaction; however, the extent that these contribute is unclear. As a result, this study investigated the contribution of these constructs to the development of residential satisfaction …

The Risk Of Pedestrian Injury And Fatality In Collisions With Motor Vehicles: A Social Ecological Study Of State Routes And City Streets In King County, Washington, Anne Vernez Moudon, Lin Lin, Junfeng Jiao, Philip Hurvitz, Paula Reeves
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This study examined the correlates of injury severity using police records of pedestrian-motor-vehicle collisions on state routes and city streets in King County, Washington. Levels of influence on collision outcome considered (1) the characteristics of individual pedestrians and drivers and their actions; (2) the road environment; and (3) the neighborhood environment. Binary logistic regressions served to estimate the risk of a pedestrian being severely injured or dying versus suffering minor or no injury. Significant individual-level influences on injury severity were confirmed for both types of roads: pedestrians being older or younger; the vehicle moving straight on the roadway. New variables …

Exposures To Multiple Environmental Chemicals (Lead, Methylmercury And Polychlorinated Biphenyls) Among Childbearing-Aged Women In The U.S., Marcella Remer Thompson
Open Access Dissertations
It is estimated that 5 to 20% of neurodevelopmental disabilities in children are caused by environmental toxic exposures. Lead, methylmercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are known to have neurobehavioral and neurodevelopmental consequences in animal models and human population studies. Bioaccumulation and exposures during gestation transfer from mother to fetus via the placenta and to an infant and young child through lactation. Little is known about multiple environmental chemical exposures, especially among childbearing-aged women.
This descriptive and exploratory study involved analysis of existing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a national probability sample. Lead, methylmercury and the …

The Social Reconstruction Of Race & Ethnicity Of The Nation's Law Students: A Request To The Aba, Aals, And Lsac For Changes In Reporting Requirements, Kevin D. Brown, Tom I. Romero Ii
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This article is extraordinarily timely as it responds directly to new rules formulated by the Department of Education (DOE) that require law schools to gather and report upon the racial and ethnic makeup of its student body. We argue that these new rules fail to be responsive to the dramatic changes in the meaning and utility of racial and ethnic categories. In turn, such changes threaten to negatively impact individuals from communities that are both underrepresented in the nation’s law schools and victims of the longest and most extreme histories of discrimination in the U.S. Accordingly, our article explores the …
