Entity And Identity, Usha Rodrigues Jan 2011

Entity And Identity, Usha Rodrigues

Scholarly Works

The function, indeed the very existence, of nonprofit corporations is undertheorized. Recent literature suggests that only preferential tax treatment adequately accounts for the persistence of the nonprofit form. This explanation is incomplete. Drawing on psychology’s social identity theory, this Article posits that the nonprofit form can create a special “warm-glow” identity that cannot be replicated by the for-profit form. For example, a local nonprofit food cooperative sells more than the free-range eggs or organic strawberries that Whole Foods and other for-profits market so effectively. The co-op offers community participation and an investment in local farms, a distinctive ethos that is …

Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Review, Travis M. Trimble Jan 2011

Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Review, Travis M. Trimble

Scholarly Works

Relatively few environmental cases were decided in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in 2010. The court decided a case holding that the portion of the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, which funded a mile-long bridge in the Everglades, repealed the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, Endangered Species Act, and other environmental laws to the extent they applied to the construction project. Additionally, the court decided that the leadbased paint hazard warning required to be included in residential leases pursuant to the Residential Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act had to be reproduced in such leases …

An Evaluation Of Moderating Influences Of Employee Proactive Personality: Empowerment And Political Skill, Deborah Kaylee Ford Jan 2011

An Evaluation Of Moderating Influences Of Employee Proactive Personality: Empowerment And Political Skill, Deborah Kaylee Ford

Dissertations and Theses

An action-orientation within the workplace is often sought out by organizations as a source for competitive advantage. Organizational leaders are increasingly reliant on independently driven employees that will take action without being instructed to do so. Toward this effort, proactive personality has become increasingly popular within the literature as a personality trait associated with an employee's propensity to take charge of situations and demonstrate initiative to make a positive impact. In identifying potential variables that will moderate the effects of proactive personality, a highly relevant construct is empowerment. Proactive personality is thought of as a trait, whereas empowerment can be …

Paying It Forward: The Case For A Specific Statutory Limitation On Exclusive Rights For User-Generated Content Under Copyright Law, Warren B. Chik

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article examines user-generated content (“UGC”) and the significance of re-inventions in the context of an increasingly user-centric internet environment and an information sharing society. It will explain the need to provide a statutory limitation in the form of an exception or exemption for socially beneficial UGC on the exclusive rights under copyright law. This will also have the effect of protecting the internet intermediary that hosts and shares UGC. Nascent but abortive attempts have been made by Canada to introduce just such a provision into her copyright legislation, while some principles and rules have also emerged from various interest …

The Unresolved Legality Of Online Gambling In Singapore, Siyuan Chen Jan 2011

The Unresolved Legality Of Online Gambling In Singapore, Siyuan Chen

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article addresses what appears to be a hitherto (legislatively and judicially) unresolved issue in a country where gambling is an established sub-culture – the legality of online gambling. The existing legislation does not provide direct answers, and as a result, the courts have not been given the opportunity to answer the question directly either. The police have previously made a few statements to the press and the media, but what should we make of them? While placing bets with unauthorised bookies (including those who operate their own website or use others’ websites) is clearly outlawed, leaving the offender with …

A Cohort Study Of A History Of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus And The Risk Of Incident Type 2 Diabetes In Louisiana Women, Yujie Wang Jan 2011

A Cohort Study Of A History Of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus And The Risk Of Incident Type 2 Diabetes In Louisiana Women, Yujie Wang

LSU Master's Theses

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common pregnancy complications. It has been shown that a history of GDM is associated with an increased risk of incident type 2 diabetes in women. In this project, we aim to investigate 1) the trend of GDM incidence in Louisiana State University Health Care Services Division (LSUHCSD) hospital system during 1997 to 2009; 2) the race-specific association between a history of GDM and the risk of incident type 2 diabetes and how the risk changes over years after the index pregnancy. We conducted a retrospective study among women aged 13-50 years. …

Comparison Of The Age And Growth Of Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) Amongst Habitats And Regions In The Gulf Of Mexico, Courtney Rose Saari Jan 2011

Comparison Of The Age And Growth Of Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) Amongst Habitats And Regions In The Gulf Of Mexico, Courtney Rose Saari

LSU Master's Theses

The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) red snapper stock has been exploited since the mid 1800s; yet it is still one of the most economically important fisheries in the GOM. Red snapper have been managed as a unit stock and are currently overfished, but perhaps no longer undergoing overfishing. Habitat varies greatly throughout the GOM and while numerous studies have aged red snapper, none have simultaneously compared the age and size structure and growth rates among standing and toppled oil and gas platforms with natural habitats. The objectives of this study were to examine the size and age structure and growth …

Finding The Heart Of Medical Family Therapy: A Content Analysis Of Medical Family Therapy Casebook Articles, Richard Bischoff, Paul R. Springer, Daniel S. Felix, Cody S. Hollist

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

In an effort to identify the essential ingredients of medical family therapy, a content analysis of 15 peer-reviewed case studies in medical family therapy was conducted. The case studies were published from 1996 to 2007 in Families, Systems, & Health. Through a qualitative content analysis, three main themes emerged that describe the essence of the practice of medical family therapy: (1) The patient’s multisystemic experience of disease, (2) treatment is about caring, not just caregiving, and (3) elevating the patient as collaborator in the care team.

Consumer Behavior In Social Mediums: A Study Of The Impact Of Social Networking Sites And Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games On College Students' Academic And Social Lives, Laura Johnston

Honors Theses

Consumer Behavior is an interdisciplinary field that marketers use to understand the wants and behavior of consumers. It focuses on how people decide to spend their available resources, such as time or money, on a product or service and examines issues such as why, how often, and the impact of making such a decision. This study will incorporate the Social Cognitive Theory's assessment of expected outcomes based on consumers' own direct experiences that incite continued participation with the Use and Gratification Theory's idea of social need that may result in need gratification, leading to unintended results. Users of SNSs and …

Race, Body, And Sexuality In Music Videos, Erika Vandyke Jan 2011

Race, Body, And Sexuality In Music Videos, Erika Vandyke

Honors Projects

Previous research has demonstrated that women are objectified and sexualized in music videos, and that Black characters are underrepresented in most genres. This content analysis addressed the question of whether the bodies and sexuality of women in music videos were portrayed differently based on their race. Music videos (n=47) were coded for women’s character roles, body size, and visual performances of sexuality, and for Black women’s Afrocentricity. Videos were also coded for specific ways women’s bodies were objectified or sexualized through camera shots and angles. Implications include the idea that Black women may internalize video messages about beauty …

Preventive Dentistry Techniques In The Treatment Of Dental Caries And Biofilm Control: A Review, Tyler R. Oatmen Jan 2011

Preventive Dentistry Techniques In The Treatment Of Dental Caries And Biofilm Control: A Review, Tyler R. Oatmen

Honors Projects

This study reviews the biological mechanisms and recent advances in preventive dentistry therapies that prevent the formation dental caries, covering both traditional and novel techniques. The techniques covered prevent the formation of dental caries through two therapeutic approaches, either promoting the remineralization of the hard tooth surface or regulating the level and composition of the oral biofilm present in the mouth. Traditional therapies covered include fluoride and calcium treatments that promote the remineralization of the tooth surface, and antibiotic therapies that attempt to regulate oral biofilm levels, such as chlorhexidine, essential oils, systemic antibiotics, and salivation stimulating therapies. Novel applications …

Information Asymmetry And Information Failure: Disclosure Problems In Complex Financial Markets, Steven L. Schwarcz Jan 2011

Information Asymmetry And Information Failure: Disclosure Problems In Complex Financial Markets, Steven L. Schwarcz

Faculty Scholarship

Disclosure of information has been a key to regulation of the financial markets in the United States. Indeed, some have argued that the ‘exclusive focus [of federal securities regulation] is on full disclosure’ (Hazen, 2005). Yet there is relatively little dispute that although most if not all of the risks giving rise to the collapse of the market for structured securities backed by subprime mortgages were disclosed, the disclosure was ineffective. Disclosure failed because of the complexity of those securities and transactions.

This chapter examines disclosure’s insufficiency in addressing information asymmetry, arguing that complexity can cause information failure. There are …

Replenishment Policies For A Tree-Type Three Echelon Supply Chain System, Ratkrit Rochanaluk Jan 2011

Replenishment Policies For A Tree-Type Three Echelon Supply Chain System, Ratkrit Rochanaluk

LSU Master's Theses

One of the common goals which most companies have is to maximize profits. There are two way to increase profit: increasing revenue or reducing cost. Lacking of ability to keep the cost down could potentially drive the companies out of the business. In recent years, many researchers have been paying more attention on improving supply chain system due to high potential of creating cost savings. The supply chain network considered in this research is a tree-type, three-echelon single producer, multiple distributors, and multiple retailers system. The goal of this research is to develop a replenishment policy which satisfies customers’ demand …

Psychometric Evaluation Of A Proposed, Alzheimer's Aggression Scale, Kristina Little Jan 2011

Psychometric Evaluation Of A Proposed, Alzheimer's Aggression Scale, Kristina Little

LSU Master's Theses

Aggressive behavior is a common symptom of mid- to late-stage Alzheimer’s disease, causing unique challenges for caregivers and healthcare professionals. In previous research, aggressive behavior related to dementia was linked to higher caregiver distress and burden. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of an aggressive behavior subscale of the Revised Memory and Behavior Problem Checklist (RMBPC) among Alzheimer’s disease caregivers. The subscale measures the frequency of aggressive behavior and the caregiver’s reaction. The sample consisted of 419 caregivers reporting some frequency of aggressive behavior by the care recipient. Exploratory factor analysis was favorable. Convergent validity …

Comparison Of Disk Diffusion, Agar Dilution, And Broth Microdiultion For Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Of Five Chitosans, Lin Jiang Jan 2011

Comparison Of Disk Diffusion, Agar Dilution, And Broth Microdiultion For Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Of Five Chitosans, Lin Jiang

LSU Master's Theses

Chitosan is a polysaccharide biopolymer with excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low toxicity, which allows for potential wide applications. Recently, antimicrobial activities of chitosan against foodborne pathogens have been studied; many used disk diffusion to determine the activity. However, this method is unable to obtain minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), i.e., not quantitative. The objective of this study was to compare disk diffusion with agar dilution and broth microdilution, two quantitative methods used routinely in clinical laboratories, to determine MICs of chitosan against foodborne pathogens. Five chitosan compounds with molecular weights ranging between 43 and 1,100 kDa were tested against 36 representative …

Rethinking Novelty In Patent Law, Sean B. Seymore Jan 2011

Rethinking Novelty In Patent Law, Sean B. Seymore

Duke Law Journal

The novelty requirement seeks to ensure that a patent will not issue if the public already possesses the invention. Although gauging possession is usually straightforward for simple inventions, it can be difficult for those in complex fields like biotechnology, chemistry, and pharmaceuticals. For example, if a drug company seeks to patent a promising molecule that was disclosed but never physically made in the prior art, the key possession question is whether a person having ordinary skill in the art (PHOSITA) could have made it at the time of the prior disclosure. Put differently, could the PHOSITA rely on then-existing knowledge …

Department of Anaesthesia

We report the case of a young patient with 36 weeks pregnancy, and an acute respiratory infection with severe bronchospasm, who developed an occipital headache and neck pain on the third day of inadvertent dural puncture during placement of combined epidural spinal anaesthesia for caesarian section. It was diagnosed as post-dural puncture headache until generalised tonic clonic siezures occurred the next day raising the suspicion of postpartum eclampsia or meningitis. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome was diagnosed on MRI of the brain which showed features of reversible ischemia in the posterior region of the brain. With anticonvulsant therapy and antibiotics there …

Anaesthetic Challenges In Emergency Surgical Repair Of Acute Aortic Dissection Rupturing Into The Pericardium In A Pregnant Patient, Mohammad Irfan Akhtar, Khalid Samad Jan 2011

Anaesthetic Challenges In Emergency Surgical Repair Of Acute Aortic Dissection Rupturing Into The Pericardium In A Pregnant Patient, Mohammad Irfan Akhtar, Khalid Samad

Department of Anaesthesia

Acute aortic dissection in pregnancy is a serious situation, because rapid and appropriate surgical decision making is required to save the life of both mother and baby. Aortic dissection is rare in young women but is likely during pregnancy (third trimester) secondary to the hyperdynamic and hypervolaemic circulatory state associated with pregnancy. A 35 years old 27 weeks pregnant patient weighing 90 kg presented in the emergency with severe chest pain. In the immediate post cardiopulmonary bypass period, the patient started bleeding profusely from the anastamotic sites irrespective of utilization of all the conventional methods of haemostasis including multiple units …
