The Role Of Viral Protein Pul21a In Human Cytomegalovirus Infection, Anthony Fehr
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The double-stranded DNA virus human cytomegalovirus: HCMV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that causes severe disease in immunocompromised individuals and neonates. The biology of HCMV remains largely undefined and functions of many of the roughly 200 putative HCMV genes are still unknown. One of these genes, UL21a, was shown to be critical for efficient viral replication in two large-scale mutagenesis studies. UL21a encodes for a putative protein that is 123 amino acids and has no homology to any known proteins. The gene products of UL21a, its role during infection, and its function(s) remain undefined. Here, we characterized UL21a and demonstrated …
On The Road To Samaria: Urban Religious Congregations As Resource Brokers, Kirk Foster
On The Road To Samaria: Urban Religious Congregations As Resource Brokers, Kirk Foster
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Concentrated poverty is an increasing problem in urban U.S. neighborhoods leading to social isolation and marginalization from mainstream institutions. Conventional thought has argued that the urban poor lack resources necessary for social and economic mobility due to constrained social networks endemic in homogeneously poor communities. However, neighborhood based organizations may be one place where the urban poor can engage heterogeneous resource networks to advance socially and economically. Religious congregations are enduring neighborhood organizations that present the opportunity for social interaction and resource access. Thus, this study examines the role of religious congregations in providing access to resources embedded in congregational …

Spray Techniques And Lung Cancer Chemoprevention, Huijing Fu
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Chemoprevention is a promising approach to decrease the incidence of lung cancer in current and former smokers. Directly delivering drugs to the lung could lead to a high concentration in the target organ with a lower dose compared to other means of administration. The primary advantages of aerosol delivery in treating lung diseases include improving the bioavailability of the drug in the lung, decreasing the medicine dose, rapid action, and reducing the systemic toxicity as well as side effects. Spray techniques are widely used for aerosol delivery. Two spray techniques were evaluated in this study for their applications in lung …
The Brains Of Babies: A Surface Based Approach To Study Cortical Development In Term And Preterm Human Infants, Jason Hill
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Half a million infants are born before term gestation each year in the United States. Although advances in newborn medicine have increased survival rates of very preterm infants to almost 90%, surviving preterm infants are at increased risk for developing lasting neurologic impairments. In order to develop a plausible neuroprotective strategy it is imperative that we improve our understanding of normal cortical development and develop tools to evaluate injury. Using a surface based approach we have characterized normal cortical development in healthy term infants and analyzed abnormalities associated with preterm birth. Accurate cortical surface reconstructions for each hemisphere of 12 …

Asset Effects For Children With Disabilities: Analysis Of Educational And Health Outcomes, Jin Huang
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
In the last two decades, asset-based social policies, which encourage families, especially low-income families, to accumulate assets by providing appropriate institutional settings, have received increasing attention from policymakers and researchers. Various programs and strategies have been outlined to improve saving and asset ownership opportunities in disadvantaged populations. Although there are multiple proposals of asset-based programs for children with disabilities, few of them have been implemented. To better inform asset-based policy practices for children with disabilities, this study examines asset effects for this population using the secondary survey data. Asset effects refer to the hypothesized positive influences of household assets on …

The Role Of Ikkβ In Osteoclastogenesis And Inflammatory Osteolysis, Jesse Otero
The Role Of Ikkβ In Osteoclastogenesis And Inflammatory Osteolysis, Jesse Otero
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Bone homeostasis is essential for health and is altered in many pathological conditions. A balance in the activity of osteoblasts: bone-building cells) and osteoclasts: boneresorbing cells) determines the state of bone metabolism, and a tip in this balance toward either cell type is detrimental to health. In clinical settings, the most common bone diseases favor increased osteoclast activity and include osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Heightened osteoclast differentiation and activation in these conditions causes bone loss which results in increased fracture risk, bone pain, and deformity. Understanding the mechanisms by which osteoclasts develop will elucidate important targets for therapy in these …
Identification Of The Molecular Basis Of Morphological Variation In Avian Beaks, Kara Powder
Identification Of The Molecular Basis Of Morphological Variation In Avian Beaks, Kara Powder
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Vertebrates, particularly birds, show extremely variable species-specific morphology in craniofacial structures. Cranial neural crest cells give rise to all the cartilage and bone of the face, and transplantation experiments have shown that these cells contain species-specific patterning information. First, I employed custom cross-species microarrays to analyze the spectrum of developmental signaling pathway and transcription factor gene expression changes in neural crest cells of the developing beaks for the chicken, duck, and quail, both before and after morphological variation is evident. I found that neural crest cells have established a species-specific gene expression profile that predates morphological variation. In addition to …

Nineteenth-century Germany saw an expansion of choral music in a secular context, bringing about changes not only in the nature of the organizations but also in the character of the music. Often depicted in history books as the age of the Lied, the early nineteenth century was also the age of the Chorgesang, creating a demand for music for social gatherings. Amateur choruses and partsinging reached their peak of popularity in nineteenth-century Germany. Gesangvereinen: mixed voice choirs) soon broke into segregated choirs known as Liedertafeln: male voice choirs) and Frauenchoren: female voice choirs). These segregated choirs became a phenomenon and …

Coalitions And Incumbency Advantage In Mexico, Samuel Bonilla Licea
Coalitions And Incumbency Advantage In Mexico, Samuel Bonilla Licea
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Despite the multi-party feature of the federal electoral system in Mexico, local elections are essentially embedded in a bipartisan system. Literature has thus far assumed that democratic transitions will permeate from the national to the sub-national level. However, in Mexico, even a decade after the democratic transition occurred at the federal level, some states have lagged behind. Most of the work done on this topic, for the Mexican case, analyzes the problem at a macro level that ignores the dynamics of election at local districts, focusing mainly on the link between the federal congress and state governors. I argue that …
