Organizational Apologies: Bp As A Case Study, Erin O'Hara O'Connor
Organizational Apologies: Bp As A Case Study, Erin O'Hara O'Connor
Vanderbilt Law Review
This Article examines the conduct of BP executives in the weeks following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to illuminate the use of apology by organizations. After briefly describing the value of apology and its nuances from an evolutionary perspective, the Article describes how apology and other responsibility-accepting behaviors can be mobilized by organizations to avoid the costs of its apparently careless conduct. In particular, organizations can designate particular agents as spokespersons who possess the ability to portray a sense of sincerity and regret. Moreover, reconciliation by ingroup members appears to be more common than is reconciliation by outgroup members, likely …

The Creation Of Art Books With Adolescents Diagnosed With An Eating Disorder: Effectiveness, Self-Esteem, And Related Factors, Eileen Chaves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This pilot study undertook a mixed methods exploration of the interaction of art therapy and self-esteem in an adolescent eating disorder population. Using therapeutic art books in a group format, adolescents created art about their feelings, their eating disorder, or whatever else they deemed important. This art technique is relatively new and novel as an art therapy intervention. Therefore, this study aimed to look at the technique's effectiveness at decreasing participants' negative mood states and investigated the technique's ability to affect participants' perceptions of their self-esteem. Measures of global self-esteem and art therapy related self-esteem were measured using the Rosenberg …

Current Economic Situation In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Goran Mirascic Ph.D.
Current Economic Situation In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Goran Mirascic Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
This article provides an overview of the current economic situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Beginning in the second half of 2008, macroeconomic conditions in B&H began precipitating a decline in economic activity. While the global financial crisis was among the factors contributing to this decline, it was far from the only factor. Problematic macroeconomic conditions were also a result of B&H’s own structural and political problems, caused largely by the shortcomings of a political entity comprising two autonomous entities. Due to such problems, the governments of B&H turned to the International Monetary Fund for assistance. This article analyzes the effects …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study compared the delivery of “verbal and visual” with “verbal, visual and tactile” swimming instruction to small groups of DCD pupils for front crawl and backstroke performance across 10 lessons x 30 minutes/week. The interaction and main effects for group and time on front crawl performances were not significant, indicating no differences were found between the two teaching methods. Also, the front crawl performances of the DCD swimmers did not change over the intervention period. The interaction and main effect for group on backstroke performances over the 10 weekly lessons were not significant. However, a significant main effect of …

Restorative Classrooms: Critical Peace Education In A Juvenile Detention Home, Cheryl Duckworth
Restorative Classrooms: Critical Peace Education In A Juvenile Detention Home, Cheryl Duckworth
Peace and Conflict Studies
This article describes several of the more successful critical peace education methodologies and perspectives that I was able to bring to my classroom in a juvenile detention home. For example, reflective writing and community analysis of nonviolent peace movements formed the core of my curriculum, as did critical analysis of the social processes of stereotyping and dehumanization. As a result, numerous students grew in their ability to write, express empathy with others, identify bias and articulate critical analysis of their schools, among other political systems. This analysis will contribute to the growing body of work on the practice of critical …

Genetics Of Coxiella Burnetii: On The Path Of Specialization, Michael F. Minnick, Rahul Raghavan
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Coxiella burnetii is an extremely infectious, zoonotic agent that causes Q fever in humans. With the exception of New Zealand, the bacterium is distributed worldwide. Coxiella is classified as a select agent based on its past and potential use as a bioweapon and its threat to public health. Despite decades of research, we know relatively little regarding Coxiella?s molecular pathogenesis, and a vaccine is not widely available. This article briefly reviews the unusual genetics of C. burnetii; a pathogen that retains telltale genetic mementos collected over the course of its evolutionary path from a free-living bacterium to an obligate intracellular …

Deepwater Drilling: Law, Policy, And Economics Of Firm Organization And Safety, Mark A. Cohen
Vanderbilt Law Review
Nathan Richardson 64 Vand. L. Rev. 1853 (2011) Although the causes of the Deepwater Horizon spill are not yet conclusively identified, significant attention has focused on the safety-related policies and practices-often referred to as the safety culture-of BP and other firms involved in drilling the well. This Article defines and characterizes the economic and policy forces that affect safety culture and identifies reasons why those forces may or may not be adequate or effective from the public's perspective. Two potential justifications for policy intervention are that: (1) not all of the social costs of a spill may be internalized by …

Legislative Recommendations For A Statewide Farm-To-School Bill In Mississippi, Harvard Law School Health Law And Policy Clinic, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project
Delta Directions: Publications
As states and school districts around the country consider strategies to address childhood obesity, programs that connect schools with local farmers selling fresh fruits and vegetables have emerged as effective means of improving fruit and vegetable consumption. Equally important, these programs spur economic development by creating a market for the sale of produce grown by local farmers, in which individual and governmental “food dollars” can be increasingly spent within the state. In 2010, over 2000 farm-to-school programs were in operation and 25 states had state-level farm-to-school policies.

Localisation To Lipid Rafts Correlates With Increased Function Of The Gal/Galnac Lectin In The Human Protozoan Parasite, Entamoeba Histolytica, Brenda H. Welter
Publications
Entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of dysentery and liver abscess and is prevalent in developing countries. Adhesion to the host is critical to infection and is mediated by amoebic surface receptors. One such receptor, the Gal/GalNAc lectin, binds to galactose or N-acetylgalactosamine residues on host components and consists of heavy (Hgl), light (Lgl) and intermediate (Igl) subunits. The mechanism by which the lectin assembles into a functional complex is not known. The parasite also relies on cholesterol-rich domains (lipid rafts) for adhesion. Therefore, it is conceivable that rafts regulate the assembly or function of the lectin. To test …

Culture Medium, Gas Atmosphere And Mapk Inhibition Affect Regulation Of Rna-Binding Protein Targets During Mouse Preimplantation Development., Michele D Calder, Patricia H Watson, Andrew J Watson
Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications
During oogenesis, mammalian oocytes accumulate maternal mRNAs that support the embryo until embryonic genome activation. RNA-binding proteins (RBP) may regulate the stability and turnover of maternal and embryonic mRNAs. We hypothesised that varying embryo culture conditions, such as culture medium, oxygen tension and MAPK inhibition, affects regulation of RBPs and their targets during preimplantation development. STAU1, ELAVL1, KHSRP and ZFP36 proteins and mRNAs were detected throughout mouse preimplantation development, whereas Elavl2 mRNA decreased after the two-cell stage. Potential target mRNAs of RBP regulation, Gclc, Slc2a1 and Slc7a1 were detected during mouse preimplantation development. Gclc mRNA was significantly elevated in embryos …

Targeted Inhibition Of Calpain Reduces Myocardial Hypertrophy And Fibrosis In Mouse Models Of Type 1 Diabetes, Ying Li, Jian Ma, Huaqing Zhu, Manpreet Singh, David Hill, Peter A. Greer, J. Malcolm Arnold, E. Dale Abel
Paediatrics Publications
OBJECTIVE - Recently we have shown that calpain-1 activation contributes to cardiomyocyte apoptosis induced by hyperglycemia. This study was undertaken to investigate whether targeted disruption of calpain would reduce myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis in mouse models of type 1 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - Diabetes in mice was induced by injection of streptozotocin (STZ), and OVE26 mice were also used as a type 1 diabetic model. The function of calpain was genetically manipulated by cardiomyocyte-specific knockout Capn4 in mice and the use of calpastatin transgenic mice. Myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis were investigated 2 and 5 months after STZ injection …

Data and Test Instruments
In late 2005, Canadian Forces Health Services (CFHS) was tasked with the command of the NATO Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit (R3MMU) on Kandahar Airfield in southern Afghanistan. Preparations drew on past experience and planning. Eight complete hospital contingents were trained and deployed in rotation. Near-reality simulation training was undertaken with the combat brigade, including complete deployment of the field hospital in the exercise area. Standard operating procedures (SOP) were developed and applied by each rotation so successfully that they were adopted by the new command in late 2009. The Canadian period at R3MMU had the highest survival rate ever …

Principles Of Combat Surgical Care In A Staged Evacuation System, Vivian Mcalister, Rob Stiegelmar, Brian Church, Ray Kao
Data and Test Instruments
Background: The NATO hospital classification of hospitals describes an orderly transfer of patients with severe injuries through a series of increasingly sophisticated hospitals as they are brought from the point of injury to their home hospital. Forward hospital surgery is restricted to damage control and resuscitation while definitive surgery is performed at home by the destination surgical team. In reality many patients enter the hospital chain higher up and some receive definitive surgery as they proceed through the chain of evacuation. The purpose of this paper is to determine if clear doctrine exists to guide the performance of surgery on …

Children’S Episodic And Generic Reports Of Alleged Abuse, Luke Schneider, Heather L. Price, Kim Roberts, Amy M. Hedrick
Psychology Faculty Publications
With the present data, we explored the relations between the language of interviewer questions, children’s reports, and case and child characteristics in forensic interviews. Results clearly indicated that the type of questions posed by interviewers – either probing generic or episodic features of an event – was related to the specificity of information reported by children. Further, interviewers appeared to adjust their questioning strategies based on the frequency of the alleged abuse. Children alleging single instances of abuse were asked more episodic questions than those alleging multiple abuses. In contrast, children alleging multiple incidents of abuse were asked a greater …
