Simulation Of A Mobile Robot Navigation System, Ahmed Khusheef, Ganesh Kothapalli, Majid Tolouei Rad
Research outputs 2011
Mobile robots are used in various application areas including manufacturing, mining, military operations, search and rescue missions and so on. As such there is a need to model robot mobility that tracks robot system modules such as navigation system and visi on based object recognition. For the navigation system it is important to locate the position of the robot in surr ounding environment. Then it has to plan a path towards desired destination. The navigation system of a robot has to identify all potential obstacles in order to find a suitable path. The objective of this research is to develop …

Design Of Modular Fixtures Using A 3d-Modelling Approach, U Farhan, M Tolouei-Rad
Research outputs 2011
The need for improved productivity and reduced time to market has been increased significantly in manufacturing processes in recent decades. There are many factors that play a role in providing manufacturing processes with more productivity. One is the use of modular fixtures (MFs). MFs have brought many benefits to manufacturing industries including reduced costs and times of production. An MF can be defined as a complete system that consist different elements for effectively and securely holding the workpiece in place for performing various machining operations. Generally an MF is made by assembling a number of fixture elements in a feasible …
Assessing The Dynamic Relationship Between Small And Large Cap Stock Prices, K. Ho, B. Ernst, Zhaoyong Zhang
Assessing The Dynamic Relationship Between Small And Large Cap Stock Prices, K. Ho, B. Ernst, Zhaoyong Zhang
Research outputs 2011
The historical long-run return on small capitalization stocks has unquestionably outperformed large capitalization stocks since 1926. The phenomenon of small capitalization stocks having higher risk- adjusted returns compared with large capitalization stocks is an equity market anomaly first discovered in 1981. Since then, many academics and investors have strongly argued that “size is dead”. This paper argues that far from being dead, the phenomenon of size effect appears alive and well and it could be exploited effectively over long-term investment horizons. To analyze this phenomenon, we focus specifically on the dynamics of small cap and large cap prices. We test …
Modeling The Conditional Volatility Asymmetry Of Business Cycles In Four Oecd Countries: A Multivariate Garch Approach, K Ho, A Tsui, Zhaoyong Zhang
Modeling The Conditional Volatility Asymmetry Of Business Cycles In Four Oecd Countries: A Multivariate Garch Approach, K Ho, A Tsui, Zhaoyong Zhang
Research outputs 2011
There are many studies on the business cycle indicators in the past decades, but mostly focusing on the asymmetric and non-linear features of business cycles incorporated into the conditional mean equation rather than the conditional variance formulation. Recently, the hypothesis of volatility asymmetry in business cycle indicators has been re-examined by, for instance, Ho and Tsui (2003 and 2004) using univariate asymmetric power ARCH (APARCH) and EGARCH models. However, the main drawback of univariate GARCH analysis is that it fails to capture the co-movement of macroeconomic variables. These co-movement relationships are important issues emphasised by the business cycle researchers, yet …
The Combined Conceptual Life Cycle Model Of Information Quality In User Perceptions Of Iq On The Web, Shirlee-Ann Knight
The Combined Conceptual Life Cycle Model Of Information Quality In User Perceptions Of Iq On The Web, Shirlee-Ann Knight
Research outputs 2011
Presented is the Combined Conceptual Life Cycle (CCLC) Model of Information Quality (IQ). The CCLC conceptualises information/data quality as being a highly relative construct, best understood in terms of sixteen IQ dimensions housed within four broad IQ categories: namely; Intrinsic IQ, Representational IQ, Interactional IQ, and Contextual IQ. The four categories themselves are seen as falling into two information life cycle contexts: that of (1) data/information generation and (2) data/information use. By conceptualising user perceptions of IQ in terms of the information life cycle, the model is able to demonstrate where in the information life cycle users are most likely …

Analysis Of Key Installation Protection Using Computerized Red Teaming, Tirtha Ranjeet, Philip Hingston, Chiou Peng Lam, Martin Masek
Research outputs 2011
This paper describes the use of genetic algorithms (GAs) for computerized red teaming applications, to explore options for military plans in specific scenarios. A tool called Optimized Red Teaming (ORT) is developed and we illustrate how it may be utilized to assist the red teaming process in security organizations, such as military forces. The developed technique incorporates a genetic algorithm in conjunction with an agent-based simulation system (ABS) called MANA (Map Aware Non-uniform Automata). Both enemy forces (the red team) and friendly forces (the blue team) are modelled as intelligent agents in a multi-agent system and many computer simulations of …

Background: Many factors have been associated with the onset and maintenance of depressive symptoms in later life, although this knowledge is yet to be translated into significant health gains for the population. This study gathered information about common modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for depression with the aim of developing a practical probabilistic model of depression that can be used to guide risk reduction strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken of 20,677 community-dwelling Australians aged 60 years or over in contact with their general practitioner during the preceding 12 months. Prevalent depression (minor or major) according to the Patient …
Class Music Learning Activities: Do Students Find Them Important, Interesting And Useful?, Geoffrey Lowe
Class Music Learning Activities: Do Students Find Them Important, Interesting And Useful?, Geoffrey Lowe
Research outputs 2011
Retaining students in elective class music programmes is an issue in many secondary schools. Retention is particularly problematic among lower secondary students. Eccles (2005) states that the subjective task values students attach to learning activities in any elective subject are key indicators of future enrolment decisions. Accordingly, this article reports on a study which utilized subjective task values as a theoretical foundation for investigating why many students drop out of elective class music programmes at this early stage. Specifically, the article reports on a study into students’ valuing of class music learning activities in Western Australia. Participating students were in …

High-Dimensional Objective-Based Data Farming, Zeng Fanchao, James Decraene, Malcolm Low, Wentong Cai, Suiping Zhou, Philip F. Hingston
Research outputs 2011
In objective-based data farming, decision variables of the Red Team are evolved using evolutionary algorithms such that a series of rigorous Red Team strategies can be generated to assess the Blue Team's operational tactics. Typically, less than 10 decision variables (out of 1000+) are selected by subject matter experts (SMEs) based on their past experience and intuition. While this approach can significantly improve the computing efficiency of the data farming process, it limits the chance of discovering “surprises” and moreover, data farming may be used only to verify SMEs' assumptions. A straightforward solution is simply to evolve all Red Team …

Cultivating Care: Nurturing Nurses For A New Tomorrow, Caroline J. Vafeas, Melanie Lauva, Tania Beament
Research outputs 2011
In large academic institutions, students often feel very lost, confused, lonely, and anxious or even a fraud at being there. At Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, researchers identified a gap in provision for Nursing Students which addresses these concerns. This study used a qualitative case study utilising rich narrative and aesthetic expression to explore and describe the experiences of both student mentees and academic mentors over the trajectory of the student’s Bachelor Degree programme. Findings emerging show students both want and need academic mentorship but the form upon which that takes is highly individual and changeable as the individuals …

Construction Induction Training: How Effective For The Housing And Civil Construction Industries In Wa?, Susanne Bahn, Llandis Barratt-Pugh
Research outputs 2011
Introducing practices to reduce the number of work-related injuries in the construction industry is a continual challenge, specifically in WA where the industry is adapting to the additional pressures of a second development boom this century. In 2006, Worksafe WA responded by introducing mandatory certification in safety awareness training for all employees, before they could begin work on a construction site. This paper reviews the impact of this training on the housing and civil sectors of the industry. It presents both the perceptions of the stakeholders from their survey responses and from the analyses the lost time injury/disease statistics. These …
A 'Once In A Generation Opportunity'? Narratives About The Potential Impact Of Ohs Harmonisation On Smaller Firms In Australia, Rowena Barrett, Susanne Bahn, Susan Mayson
A 'Once In A Generation Opportunity'? Narratives About The Potential Impact Of Ohs Harmonisation On Smaller Firms In Australia, Rowena Barrett, Susanne Bahn, Susan Mayson
Research outputs 2011
Regulatory reform will see the introduction of harmonised Occupational Health and Safety laws across Australia. Here we consider the potential impact of this on smaller firms as the first step in assessing how they may adapt to this regulatory change. We use textual data consisting of recent media and blogs that highlight key stakeholders’ perceptions of the purpose and outcomes of harmonisation on smaller firms. The narratives perpetuate the negative discourse of regulation, not only for smaller firms, but for other key stakeholders. Critical analysis of stakeholders’ views of the effects of harmonisation articulates constraints and possibilities of regulatory change …
Introducing Mandatory Training Systems? Investigating The Implementation Of Compulsory Pre-Site Construction Training, Llandis Barratt-Pugh, Susanne Bahn
Introducing Mandatory Training Systems? Investigating The Implementation Of Compulsory Pre-Site Construction Training, Llandis Barratt-Pugh, Susanne Bahn
Research outputs 2011
There can be no more effective learning than that achieved by training systems to reduce death and injury. In such cases the imposition of a mandatory course would appear justifiable, especially where there is a history of unfortunate incidents and current rapid workforce growth. Installing learning as an imperative within a vibrant industry requires considerable negotiation between stakeholders to turn evidence into policy, industry intent, regulatory curriculum and subsequent workplace practice. This paper reflects back and reviews the introduction of such training within the construction industry in Western Australia as it adapts to the additional pressures of the development boom. …
Does Problem Based Learning Deliver The Goods?, Stephen Benson
Does Problem Based Learning Deliver The Goods?, Stephen Benson
Research outputs 2011
Much of university teaching is grounded in a traditional or semi-traditional mode, that is it is lecturer centric and at least partly didactic. There are numerous reasons for this which include: a reluctance to change on the part of academics; the changing nature of the student demographic; an increasing emphasis on “education as a service”; risk averse behavior on the part of academics, academic managers fearing adverse student feedback and the financial imperatives which require the maximization of student progress and retention. It has been argued that “safe”, traditional approaches to pedagogy do not prepare students for the world of …

Spatio-Temporal Modelling Of Malaria Incidence For Evaluation Of Public Health Policy Interventions In Ghana, West Africa, Simon K. Appiah, Ute Mueller, James Cross
Research outputs 2011
Malaria is a major challenge to both the public health and the socio-economic development of Ghana. Major factors which account for this situation include poor environmental conditions and the lack of prevention services. In spite of the numerous intervention measures, the disease continues to be the most prevalent health problem in the country. The risk assessment reports for Ghana were based on household surveys which provide inadequate data for accurate analysis of incidence cases. This poses a serious threat to planning and management for the health care delivery system in Ghana. Malaria transmission varies with geographical location and time (or …

Xtreme Credit Risk Models: Implications For Bank Capital Buffers, David E. Allen, Akhmad R. Kramadibrata, Robert J. Powell, Abhay K. Singh
Research outputs 2011
The Global Financial Crisis (GFC) highlighted the importance of measuring and understanding extreme credit risk. This paper applies Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) techniques, traditionally used in the insurance industry to measure risk beyond a predetermined threshold, to four credit models. For each of the models we use both Historical and Monte Carlo Simulation methodology to create CVaR measurements. The four extreme models are derived from modifications to the Merton structural model (which we term Xtreme-S), the CreditMetrics Transition model (Xtreme-T), Quantile regression (Xtreme-Q), and the author’s own unique iTransition model (Xtreme-i) which incorporates industry factors into transition matrices. For …

Load-Bearing Capacity Of The Footing Resting On A Reinforced Fly Ash Slope, K S. Gill, J N. Choudhary, J N. Jha, Sanjay K. Shukla
Research outputs 2011
In several parts of the world, disposal of waste materials such as fly ash is a great problem. Application of waste materials as structural fills in foundations is one of the best solutions to disposal problems, because wastes can be used in large volumes in such applications. There may be difficulty due to poor load-bearing capacity of fly ash, especially when footing rests on the top of the fly ash fill slope. Inclusion of polymeric reinforcements as horizontal sheets within the fill may be one of the most viable solutions to improving the load-bearing capacity of reinforced fly ash slope, …

Research outputs 2011
IRC•37-2001, the Indian Roads Congress standard deals with the design of flexible pavements and recommends the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) as an indicator of subgrade soil strength. The subbase/base thickness of pavement is governed by the CBR value of the subgrade soil along with some other parameters such as traffic intensity, climatic conditions, etc. The conventional CBR testing method is expensive, time consuming and its repeatability is low. Additionally, it is very difficult to mould the sample at the desired in-situ density in the laboratory CBR test. Values of in• situ density are underestimated due to local dampness of surface …

Research outputs 2011
Optimisation of the optical signal from the laser multi-spot beam generator employed in a photonic based real-time plant discrimination sensor for use in selective herbicide spraying systems is presented. The plant detection sensor uses a three-wavelength laser diode module that sequentially emits identically-polarized laser light beams through a common aperture, along one optical path. Each laser beam enters a multi-spot beam generator which produces 15 parallel laser beams over a 240mm span. The intensity of the reflected light from each spot is detected by a high-speed line scan image sensor. Plant discrimination is based on calculating the slope of the …

Theoretical simulations are in excellent agreement with the experimental results that demonstrate the concept of the photonic microwave filter structure.
Review Of Indigenous Oral Health, Scott Williams, Lisa Jamieson, Andrea Macrae, A Gray
Review Of Indigenous Oral Health, Scott Williams, Lisa Jamieson, Andrea Macrae, A Gray
Research outputs 2011
Indigenous Australians1 have poorer oral health than other Australians [1, 2]. Indigenous people suffer from more caries, periodontal diseases, and tooth loss than non-Indigenous people [3]. Tooth decay among the Indigenous population more commonly goes untreated, leading to more extractions. This discrepancy is attributed in part to the fact that access to culturally appropriate and timely dental care is often not available to Indigenous people, especially in rural and remote areas. Other information on oral health such as culturally appropriate resources about maintaining healthy teeth and mouths, and nutritional guidance on how much sugar is contained in certain foods and …

Research outputs 2011
The intention of watershed development (WD) programs in India is to improve the livelihoods of people and preserve the natural resource base, particularly in areas where water scarcity limits the development potential of rural communities. In practice, there are many complications to implementing WD programs in an effective and equitable way for all people within and between villages in a catchment. Our understanding of the potential implications of a program is often limited by the way in which we investigate the biophysical-social-economic system. Two common failings are (a) not properly considering the importance of the place, scope and scale of …
