Identification Of Four-Jointed Box 1 As A Potential Oncogene In Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma / Muhammad Mamduh Bin Ahmad Zabidi, Muhammad Mamduh Ahmad Zabidi
Student Works (2010-2019)
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a highly metastatic cancer that is endemic in South East Asia and Southern China. Despite the gravity of the disease, the current knowledge on its molecular pathogenesis is still inadequate to improve the disease management. The present study seeks to understand the molecular mechanism of NPC, with an aim to identify potential therapeutic targets or biomarkers. From a previous expression microarray study, Four – Jointed Box 1 (FJX1) gene was found to be upregulated in NPC compared to non-cancerous controls with negligible expression in 5 vital normal human organs. Human FJX1 is a Drosophila orthologue of …

Legalising Prostitution In Malaysia / Jenita Kanapathy, Kanapathy Jenita
Student Works (2010-2019)
Malaysian law criminalises prostitution under ·the Penal Code. In spite of this, prostitution continues to thrive in Malaysia. The aim of this project paper is to provide supportive arguments why legalising prostitution in Malaysia would be a better alternative as compared to the criminalisation approach. In this paper, prostitution is confined to commercialised sexual gratification between opposite sexes and does not include child prostitution, lesqian, gays, bisexuals and transvestites. The paper also presents arguments on how the current legislation in Malaysia deprives the sex .workers of their fundamental rights as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution and how it should be …

Characterisation Of Chondrocyte Matrix Responses Under Biaxial Loading / Illida Mohd Nawi, Mohd Nawi Illida
Student Works (2010-2019)
In vivo, during mechanical loading, articular cartilage is exposed to a complex biophysical environment. These biophysical and biochemical concepts have not yet been fully understood due to intricate combination of direct, shear and tensile compressive strains on articular cartilage. Mechanical forces and deformations are sensed by cells and turned into biochemical signals; which evolution is essential in regulating chondrocyte function; both in metabolic and catabolic modus operandi. The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of biaxial loading on chondrocytes. This thesis will also describe the strain rate influence of biaxial loading on chondrocytes in 3D agarose …

¡Silencio! Undocumented Immigrant Witnesses And The Right To Silence, Violeta R. Chapin
¡Silencio! Undocumented Immigrant Witnesses And The Right To Silence, Violeta R. Chapin
Publications
At a time referred to as "an unprecedented era of immigration enforcement," undocumented immigrants who have the misfortune to witness a crime in this country face a terrible decision. Calling the police to report that crime will likely lead to questions that reveal a witness's immigration status, resulting in detention and deportation for the undocumented immigrant witness. Programs like Secure Communities and 287(g) partnerships evidence an increase in local immigration enforcement, and this Article argues that undocumented witnesses' only logical response to these programs is silence. Silence, in the form of a complete refusal to call the police to report …
Not Of Woman Born: A Scientific Fantasy, Jennifer S. Hendricks
Not Of Woman Born: A Scientific Fantasy, Jennifer S. Hendricks
Publications
This Article explores the legal implications of a scientific fantasy: building artificial wombs that could gestate a human child from conception to birth. Because claims about the technological possibility of artificial wombs in the foreseeable future are likely overstated, the focus of the Article is the effect that the fantasy of artificial gestation has on the legal discourse about pregnancy and reproduction today.
The Article first places the fantasy of artificial gestation in the context of theories about reproduction that western science has propounded. The history of scientific theorizing about reproduction is a history of scientists emphasizing the male contribution …
An Unintended Casualty Of The War On Terror, Aya Gruber
An Unintended Casualty Of The War On Terror, Aya Gruber
Publications
As the dust of the Bush administration's war on terror settles, casualties are starting to appear on the legal battlefield. The United States' human rights reputation and the Supreme Court's international influence lay wounded in the wake of U.S. policies that flouted international law by advocating torture, suborning indefinite detention, and erecting irregular tribunals. Through declining citation, the courts of the world are telling the Supreme Court that if it does not respect international and foreign law, international and foreign courts will not respect it. Some might object that the Supreme Court should not be lumped with the Bush administration …
Credit Derivatives, Leverage, And Financial Regulation's Missing Macroeconomic Dimension, Erik F. Gerding
Credit Derivatives, Leverage, And Financial Regulation's Missing Macroeconomic Dimension, Erik F. Gerding
Publications
Of all OTC derivatives, credit derivatives pose particular concerns because of their ability to generate leverage that can increase liquidity - or the effective money supply - throughout the financial system. Credit derivatives and the leverage they create thus do much more than increase the fragility of financial institutions and increase counterparty risk. By increasing leverage and liquidity, credit derivatives can fuel rises in asset prices and even asset price bubbles. Rising asset prices can then mask mistakes in the pricing of credit derivatives and in assessments of overall leverage in the financial system. Furthermore, the use of credit derivatives …
Under Attack: Terrorism Risk Insurance Regulation, Alexia Brunet Marks
Under Attack: Terrorism Risk Insurance Regulation, Alexia Brunet Marks
Publications
Scholarly debates over the September 11th attacks focus predominantly on high-profile issues, such as torture, preventive detention, interrogation, privacy, and surveillance. These debates have overshadowed the equally important and far-reaching issue of terrorism risk insurance, which not only involves billions of dollars, but provides powerful incentives to keep us safe. Developing a sound understanding of the market for terrorism risk insurance is essential to guiding the difficult determination of the appropriate balance between private and public responsibility for preventing and (when necessary) compensating for terrorism.
The attacks of September 11th represented one of the costliest insurance events in American history. …
The Need To Overrule Mapp V. Ohio, William T. Pizzi
The Need To Overrule Mapp V. Ohio, William T. Pizzi
Publications
This Article argues that it is time to overrule Mapp v. Ohio. It contends that the exclusionary rule is outdated because a tough deterrent sanction is difficult to reconcile with a criminal justice system where victims are increasingly seen to have a stake in criminal cases. The rule is also increasingly outdated in its epistemological assumption which insists officers act on "reasons" that they can articulate and which disparages actions based on "hunches" or "feelings." This assumption runs counter to a large body of neuroscience research suggesting that humans often "feel" or "sense" danger, sometimes even at a subconscious …
Unraveling Privacy: The Personal Prospectus And The Threat Of A Full-Disclosure Future, Scott R. Peppet
Unraveling Privacy: The Personal Prospectus And The Threat Of A Full-Disclosure Future, Scott R. Peppet
Publications
Information technologies are reducing the costs of credible signaling, just as they have reduced the costs of data mining and economic sorting. The burgeoning informational privacy field has ignored this evolution, leaving it unprepared to deal with the consequences of these new signaling mechanisms. In an economy with robust signaling, those with valuable credentials, clean medical records, and impressive credit scores will want to disclose those traits to receive preferential economic treatment. Others may then find that they must also disclose private information to avoid the negative inferences attached to staying silent. This unraveling effect creates new types of privacy …
The Variable Determinacy Thesis, Harry Surden
The Variable Determinacy Thesis, Harry Surden
Publications
This Article proposes a novel technique for characterizing the relative determinacy of legal decision-making. I begin with the observation that the determinacy of legal outcomes varies from context to context within the law. To augment this intuition, I develop a theoretical model of determinate legal decision-making. This model aims to capture the essential features that are typically associated with the concept of legal determinacy. I then argue that we can use such an idealized model as a standard for expressing the relative determinacy or indeterminacy of decision-making in actual, observed legal contexts. From a legal theory standpoint, this approach - …

Using Education Assistants To Help Pave The Road To Literacy: Supporting Oral Language, Letter-Sound Knowledge And Phonemic Awareness In The Pre-Primary Year, Wendy Moore, Lorraine Hammond
Research outputs pre 2011
Children with weak oral language skills are at risk of experiencing difficulty with early literacy acquisition. Intensive small group intervention during the preprimary year has the potential to improve children’s success in developing emergent literacy skills. Education assistants are a potentially powerful resource for supporting students at educational risk. In this study, education assistants at four schools were trained to provide a daily half-hour emergent literacy program to pre-primary students with low oral language skills. The program focused on developing phonological awareness, letter-sound knowledge and vocabulary using both explicit and in-context (embedded) learning activities. The students undertaking the program made …

Genetic Factors In Metastatic Progression Of Cutaneous Melanoma: The Future Role Of Circulating Melanoma Cells In Prognosis And Management, A Ireland, M Millward, R Pearce, M Lee, Mel Ziman
Research outputs pre 2011
The greatest potential for improvement of outcome for patients with Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma lies in the prevention of systemic metastasis. Despite extensive investigation, current prognostic indicators either alone or in combination, although related to melanoma progression, are not sufficient to accurately predict the pattern of progression and outcome for any individual patient. Metastasis related death has been recorded in patients initially diagnosed with early stage tumour as well as in patients many years after initial tumour removal. The trouble finding a predictable pattern in the puzzle of melanoma progression may be linked to the fact that most of the material …

Modelling Small-Scale Stand-Alone (Pv) Energy Systems With Reverse Osmosis Integration, Daniel Clarke, Yasir Al-Abdeli, Ganesh Kothapalli
Research outputs 2011
Australia has a vast land mass characterised by more than 35,000km of shore-line and an abundance of renewable sources (e.g., solar and wind en ergy). Despite the existence of much potential to utilise sustainable pathways of power generation, ther e remains a general reliance on electricity generated from larger plants which are mostly grid-connected but fossil-fuel operated. In Western Australia, only a fraction of its coastal areas and inland mass is serviced by the South West Interconnected (grid) System. For the majority of its regional commun ities, decentralised power generati on forms the prime source of power provision. This exacerbates …
Interpolation Of The Gnss Wet Troposphere Delay, Johnny Lo, Ahmed El-Mowafy
Interpolation Of The Gnss Wet Troposphere Delay, Johnny Lo, Ahmed El-Mowafy
Research outputs 2011
Troposphere delay is one of the main distance-dependent errors in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) observations. Precise estimation of the troposphere wet delay is necessary to aid ambiguity resolution and for positioning in network Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) and Precise Point Positioning. Wet tropospheric estimates can also serve as a source of atmospheric information to facilitate weather forecasting. Interpolation of the troposphere wet delay is thus required when its estimation is interrupted for short periods or when data are processed at higher intervals from that of available data. The objective of this research is to compare the performance of several interpolation …
Dynamic Modelling Of Zenith Wet Delay In Gnss Measurements, Ahmed El-Mowafy, Johnny Lo, Congwei Hu
Dynamic Modelling Of Zenith Wet Delay In Gnss Measurements, Ahmed El-Mowafy, Johnny Lo, Congwei Hu
Research outputs 2011
Proper modelling of the temporal correlations of the zenith wet delay (ZWD) is important in some of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) applications such as estimation of the Perceptible Water Vapour (PWV), and methods such as Precise Point Positioning (PPP). The random walk (RW) and the first-order Gauss- Markov (GM) autocorrelation model are commonly used for the dynamic modelling of ZWD in Kalman filtering of GNSS measurements. However, it was found that the GM model consistently underestimates the temporal correlations that exist among the ZWD estimates. Therefore, a new autocorrelation dynamic model is proposed in a form similar to …

Exploring The Use Of Audio-Visual Feedback Within 3d Virtual Environments To Provide Complex Sensory Cues For Scenario-Based Learning, Michael Garrett, Mark Mcmahon
Research outputs 2011
The continuous quest for ever increasing fidelity in 3D virtual worlds is running parallel to the emergence and adoption of low-cost technologies to implement such environments. In education and training, complex simulations can now be implemented on standard desktop technologies. However, such tools lack the means to represent multisensory data beyond audio-visual feedback. This paper reports on a study that involved the design, development and implementation of a 3D learning environment for underground mine evacuation. The requirements of the environment are discussed in terms of the sensory information that needs to be conveyed and techniques are described to achieve this …
