Adsorption Of Phosphate By Paper Mill Sludge / Ahmad Razali Bin Ishak, Ishak Ahmad Razali

Student Works (2010-2019)

The utilization of paper mill sludge as adsorbent for removal of phosphates from aqueous solution has been investigated. The influences of experimental condition such as pH of solution, amount of adsorbent and initial concentration of phosphate were studied in detail. The adsorption of phosphate was pH dependant and adsorption process being more efficient in the basic pH region and maximum at pH 12. The adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics of paper mill sludge were studied. It shows that the Langmuir model is better in describing the adsorption isotherm process compared to Freundlich. The maximum adsorption capacity was 12.65 mg/g at …

Diversity Of Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria Associated With Slope Grass Axonopus Compressus / Alazhar Hassin, Hassin Alazhar Jan 2011

Diversity Of Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria Associated With Slope Grass Axonopus Compressus / Alazhar Hassin, Hassin Alazhar

Student Works (2010-2019)

Vegetation cover, especially grasses, is proven to have a significant contribution for slope stabilization. Nitrogen fixing bacteria supply some amounts of nitrogen (N) required by slope grasses for proper growth and development. In this study, three slopes were chosen based on their soil strengths namely slope A (130-140 kPa), B (80-100 kPa) and C (50-70 kPa). This study showed that the more stable slopes will also have a lower soil saturation level. There was a positive relationship between sizes of bacterial populations with soil saturation level (r2 = 0.60, p<0.05). Similar correlations were also observed between soil shear strength with soil saturation levels ( r2 = 0.58, p<0.05) as well. Culturable nitrogen-free living bacteria were isolated and enumerated from roots of Axonopus compressus, a slope grass using Burk’s nitrogen-free medium. The diversity of free-living nitrogen fixing bacteria was initially determined by the REPPCR and ERIC-PCR fingerprinting method. Results indicated that REP-PCR give better variable. Hence, the method was used throughout the study. Dendograms were constructed from REP-PCR profiles of a total of 31 strains. The cluster analysis indicated that the diversity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria on the grass roots was quite high and closely related among the population. The information about the presence of nitrogen-free fixing bacteria will greatly assist future management of vegetation to stabilise slopes.

Design And Synthesis Of A Potential Inhibitor For Den2 Ns2b/Ns3 Serine Protease / Lee Yean Kee, Yean Kee Lee

Student Works (2010-2019)

This work involves searching and designing of inhibitors for DEN2 NS2B/NS3 serine protease. It comprises three phases: modeling, synthesis and screening. Homology model construction of DEN2 NS2B/NS3 serine protease was carried out using HCV NS3/NS4A as a template. The model was then evaluated using server-based structural verification from UCLA-DOE Institute for Genomics and Proteomics server (http://nihserver.mbi.ucla.edu/SAVES/) and PROCHECK, VERIFY3D and ERRAT. The results revealed the homology model have reasonable protein fold compared to the crystal structure of DEN2 NS3 without the cofactor of NS2B bound within. The work then continued with in silico protein-ligand docking experiment using AUTODOCK 3.05, where …

Physicochemical Studies Of Liquid Pollutants Using Reversed Flow Gas Chromatographic Techniques, Khalid Khalisanni

Student Works (2010-2019)

Evaporation of pollutant liquid is a vital ecological fate when the compounds are introduced into both freshwater and marine environments through industrial effluents, or introduced directly into the air from industrial unit processes such as bioreactors and cooling towers. In such cases, reversed-flow gas chromatography (RF-GC) method is needed to measure the physicochemical properties of the pollutant liquids. RF-GC sampling technique is an effortless, fast and accurate procedure. Since the earliest publication on RF-GC, the method has been used to study physicochemical quantities by measuring the value of one in the presence of another. The application of the method embraces …

Pattern Of Hmlh1, Hmsh2 And Hmsh6 Expressions And Clinical Characteristics In Malaysian Colorectal Carcinoma Cases / Khoo Joon Joon, Joon Joon Khoo

Student Works (2010-2019)

Many environmental factors and genetic risk factors have been implicated in the development of colorectal carcinomas. Several genetic mechanisms of tumorigenesis had been suggested i.e. the suppressor and the mutator pathways. The suppressor pathway constitutes inactivation of tumour suppressor genes: p53, APC (adenomatous polyposis coli) and DCC (deleted in colorectal cancer) genes or the activation of proto-oncogene: k-ras. The mutator pathway consists of inactivation of mismatch repair (MMR) genes which results in inability to repair mismatched DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) bases during replication. The aims of the study were to determine the incidence and pattern of mismatch repair defect by immunohistochemistry …
