A Review Of Curricular Approaches And Quality Of Life Indicators In The United States For Individuals Displaing Profound Multiple Disabilities, Jonna L. Bobzien Jan 2011

A Review Of Curricular Approaches And Quality Of Life Indicators In The United States For Individuals Displaing Profound Multiple Disabilities, Jonna L. Bobzien

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

During the last two decades in the United States, there has been an increase in research studies on two salient areas of interests impacting individuals with profound multiple disabilities (PMD): providing access to appropriate educational curriculums and enhancing overall quality of life. Despite this interest, attempts to link positive quality of life indicators and appropriate educational curriculum for students with PMD have not been explored. The purpose of this literature review is to identify articles related to curriculum issues, as well as those addressing the importance of skill acquisition activities that lead to an improved quality of life. Implications for …

Sector-Switching In Transition Economies: A Case Study Of Kazakhstan's Health Care Sector, Dariga Chukmaitova Jan 2011

Sector-Switching In Transition Economies: A Case Study Of Kazakhstan's Health Care Sector, Dariga Chukmaitova

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The dissertation examines the economic and behavioral factors influencing 'sector-switching' in Kazakhstan's health care industry. Sector-switching involves doctors moving from the national to the private system, which is not well established, thereby raising questions about why the switch occurs. It addresses the question: why health care professionals in Kazakhstan switch from the public sector to similar jobs in the private or nonprofit sectors? This study addresses a key issue in public management (sector switching) and also offers insights into the dynamics of the transition from a centralized economy to a market economy. As such, its findings have `real-world' applications beyond …

Weighted Scores Method For Regression Models With Dependent Data, Aristidis K. Nikoloulopoulos, Harry Joe, N. Rao Chaganty Jan 2011

Weighted Scores Method For Regression Models With Dependent Data, Aristidis K. Nikoloulopoulos, Harry Joe, N. Rao Chaganty

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

There are copula-based statistical models in the literature for regression with dependent data such as clustered and longitudinal overdispersed counts, for which parameter estimation and inference are straightforward. For situations where the main interest is in the regression and other univariate parameters and not the dependence, we propose a "weighted scores method", which is based on weighting score functions of the univariate margins. The weight matrices are obtained initially fitting a discretized multivariate normal distribution, which admits a wide range of dependence. The general methodology is applied to negative binomial regression models. Asymptotic and small-sample efficiency calculations show that our …

Editor's Introduction: Activism And Anagnorisis, Marc Ouellette Jan 2011

Editor's Introduction: Activism And Anagnorisis, Marc Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

As I mull the current issue – a wonderful collection of open submissions and a terrific supplement on “post-9/11” developments, about both of which I feel too intellectually impoverished to write adequately – I am filled with mixed feelings, thoughts and even theoretical positions. This last is kind of inescapable given my best efforts to put theory into practice whenever and wherever possible. The two cannot and should not be inseparable, at least for anyone who claims to be even the most remotely involved in Cultural Studies. And yet, I know that this is the area where Cultural Studies fails …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Determinants Of State Reproductive Healthcare Policies, Vivian W. Greentree, John C. Lombard, John C. Morris Jan 2011

A Comparative Analysis Of The Determinants Of State Reproductive Healthcare Policies, Vivian W. Greentree, John C. Lombard, John C. Morris

School of Public Service Faculty Publications

This paper is a state comparative analysis of the determinants of a state's policies towards reproductive healthcare. While much of the literature focuses solely on abortion, our analysis employs a more comprehensive measure of access to reproductive healthcare. Three explanations -- religious, socioeconomic, and political -- are tested to see which has the most significant impact on a state's likeliness to enact restrictive policies towards reproductive healthcare. We find that the political model is the best predictor of the level of state restrictiveness, and that the percent of women in the legislature is the most powerful variable. Combining the most …

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Blowout Increases Risks To Globally Threatened Species, Claudio Campagna, Frederick T. Short, Beth A. Polidoro, Roger Mcmanus, Bruce B. Collette, Nicolas J. Pilcher, Yvonne Sadovy De Mitcheson, Simon N. Stuart, Kent E. Carpenter

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Fourteen marine species in the Gulf of Mexico are protected by the US Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. As the British Petroleum oil spill recovery and remediation proceed, species internationally recognized as having an elevated risk of extinction should also receive priority for protection and restoration efforts, whether or not they have specific legal protection. Forty additional marine species-unprotected by any federal laws-occur in the Gulf and are listed as threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List. The Red List assessment process scientifically evaluates species' global …

Pollen Morphology Of The Genus Seseli L. (Umbelliferae) In Turkey, Ebru Doğan Güner, Hayri̇ Duman, Nur Münevver Pinar

Turkish Journal of Botany

Morphological features of pollen of 11 Turkish taxa belonging to the complex genus Seseli L. were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. On the basis of exine sculpturing, 3 main types were recognised in Seseli: Type 1, rugulate at equator, psilate-perforate at pole; Type 2, striate-reticulate at equator, rugulate at pole; and Type 3, rugulate at equator, striate at pole. The study revealed that palynological characters display taxonomic significance in the genus.

The Effect Of In Vitro Competition On Shoot Regeneration From Hypocotyl Explants Of Linum Usitatissimum, Mustafa Yildiz, Çağlayan Sağlik, Cansu Telci̇ Kahramanoğullari, Emi̇ne Gülden Erkiliç Jan 2011

The Effect Of In Vitro Competition On Shoot Regeneration From Hypocotyl Explants Of Linum Usitatissimum, Mustafa Yildiz, Çağlayan Sağlik, Cansu Telci̇ Kahramanoğullari, Emi̇ne Gülden Erkiliç

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between in vitro competition and stress, and their effects on tissue culture response of Linum usitatissimum L. hypocotyl explants. Competition among explants was achieved by varying the spacing among the explants cultured. Four different culture spacing distances were used: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 cm. Six weeks after culture initiation, hypocotyl fresh and dry weights, shoot regeneration percentage, shoot number per hypocotyl, regenerated shoot length, total shoot number per petri dish, and total chlorophyll content were recorded. The results showed that encouraging competition among explants by decreasing spacing among them from …

Greenleaf's 'Best Test' Of Servant Leadership: A Multilevel Analysis, Robert W. Hayden Jan 2011

Greenleaf's 'Best Test' Of Servant Leadership: A Multilevel Analysis, Robert W. Hayden

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study empirically tests Robert Greenleaf’s (1970) seminal articulation of servant leadership. The four personal outcomes he theorized (health, wisdom, freedom-autonomy, and service orientation) were tested against established dimensions of servant leadership. All correlations were significant and positive. Using multilevel analysis, the predictive strength of these servant leadership dimensions were assessed at two levels within an organization, and explained. Implications and future direction of research were discussed.

Value Added By Mixed Methods Research: A Multiphase Mixed Methods Design, Courtney Haines

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The overall purpose of this study was to examine the perceived value of mixed methods research for graduate students at a Midwestern university. A multiphase mixed methods design was used to measure graduate students perceptions of the value of a study’s methodology. The study consisted of three phases. Phase I was conducted in order to construct passages and the goal of Phase II was to create a survey. These two phases were then combined to create Phase III. Part one of Phase III was an experiment that looked at the effect of a study’s methodology on the value of the …

Peer Relationships: Links Between Victimization, Participation, Depressive Symptoms And Achievement In The Classroom, Tiffany R. Murray Sydzyik Jan 2011

Peer Relationships: Links Between Victimization, Participation, Depressive Symptoms And Achievement In The Classroom, Tiffany R. Murray Sydzyik

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study examined the relationship between forms of victimization on participation, achievement, and depressive symptoms. Participation was hypothesized to mediate the link between victimization and achievement and internalizing symptoms such as depression. Two forms of victimization (overt and relational) were hypothesized to predict participation. Participation was also hypothesized to predict achievement and depression. Conducting a model estimation using structural equations modeling (SEM) showed that overt victimization had a significant negative relationship with participation, which means that for example, as overt victimization rates were higher, participation tended to be lower. These results also indicated that participation and achievement had a significant …

Audibility As A Predictor Of Speech Recognition And Listening Effort, Ryan W. Mccreery Jan 2011

Audibility As A Predictor Of Speech Recognition And Listening Effort, Ryan W. Mccreery

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Two studies were conducted to evaluate how audibility influences speech recognition and measures of working memory in children with normal hearing. Specifically, audibility limitations related to background noise and limited bandwidth were analyzed, as these factors are characteristic of the listening conditions encountered by children with hearing loss who wear hearing aids.

In the first study, speech recognition was measured for 117 children and 18 adults with normal hearing. Stimulus bandwidth and the level of background noise were varied systematically in order to evaluate predictions of audibility based on the Speech Intelligibility Index. Results suggested that children with normal hearing …

The Impact Of Supply Chain Innovation On Organizational Performance: An Empirical Study In The Health Care Organization, Donhee Lee Jan 2011

The Impact Of Supply Chain Innovation On Organizational Performance: An Empirical Study In The Health Care Organization, Donhee Lee

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Supply chain management (SCM) has drawn significant attention in the health care industry in recent years because of its significant impact on hospital performance and quality of care. Since SCM is a complex system that interfaces with many different dimensions within a hospital and with suppliers, organizations need to first innovate their business processes while also considering their suppliers’ processes to accomplish effective SCM. Supply chain (SC) innovation helps organizations achieve efficiency and quality management practices for new customer value creation, which is expected to result in improved organizational performance.

This study examines the effects of innovation leadership, SC innovation, …

Returning Attention To Policy Content In Diffusion Study, John M. Fulwider Jan 2011

Returning Attention To Policy Content In Diffusion Study, John M. Fulwider

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Policy diffusion research pays virtually no attention to policy content. Yet we should expect content to shape the adoption of any policy--this is what legislators and policy makers, after all, fight about. Thus the extent and speed of diffusion likely critically depend on policy content, which the current literature virtually ignores. This dissertation shows how we can better understand policy diffusion by taking policy content seriously. Paying attention to policy content, including how it is debated and understood by legislators, has immediate payoffs in the sense that two literatures largely ignored until now by diffusion researchers-- policy typologies and policy …

River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) Use Of Phragmites Australis And Density Estimation Using Genetic Techniques, Amy R. Williams Jan 2011

River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) Use Of Phragmites Australis And Density Estimation Using Genetic Techniques, Amy R. Williams

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

River otters were extirpated in Nebraska in the early 1900’s. In 1986 Nebraska Game and Parks Commission began reintroducing otters. In support of developing an otter management plan, I conducted research on two aspects of otter ecology in Nebraska. First, I examined otter use of habitats dominated by the non–native aquatic plant, Phragmites australis, in the Big Bend reach of the Platte River. Sixteen otters were trapped, radio–tagged, and tracked between 2006 and 2009. I identified 517 den/resting locations, 127 of which were unique locations. I compared den/resting site habitat use to availability to determine if otters were using …

Adapting An Evidence-Based Intervention To Improve Social And Behavioral Competence In Head Start Children: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Teacher–Child Interaction Training, Christopher Campbell Jan 2011

Adapting An Evidence-Based Intervention To Improve Social And Behavioral Competence In Head Start Children: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Teacher–Child Interaction Training, Christopher Campbell

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Empirical studies indicate that as many as 35% of Head Start children meet the diagnostic criteria for oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder (Webster-Stratton & Hammond, 1998). Without early intervention, these problematic behaviors may become stable across childhood and adolescence (Campbell, 1995), increasing the likelihood of academic problems, school drop-out, substance abuse, delinquency, and violence (Snyder, 2001). Head Start children are also more likely to enter school with significant deficits in social-emotional readiness, with a many as 40% demonstrating delays in social competencies and communication abilities (Kaiser et al., 2000). Longitudinal research indicates that early gaps in social competence for …

The Recovery Of Cognitive And Social Cognitive Functioning In Response To Social Cognition Interaction Training Administered In Community Settings: A Longitudinal Study, Lena Reddy Jan 2011

The Recovery Of Cognitive And Social Cognitive Functioning In Response To Social Cognition Interaction Training Administered In Community Settings: A Longitudinal Study, Lena Reddy

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Psychosocial rehabilitation for persons with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) encompasses recovery of functioning in a broad array of domains, including neurocognitive, social cognitive, interpersonal, occupational, and self-care abilities. There is extensive evidence that improvements in these domains are possible as a result of targeted interventions, and that these improvements may generalize to other areas of daily functioning. The current study explored rehabilitative change over time among adults with SMI that were attending outpatient day centers. Social Cognition and Interaction Training (SCIT), a cognitive-behavioral skills-training modality, was implemented during the time period in which the data was collected. Forty adults participated …

Scimago, Getachew Dinku Godana Jan 2011

Scimago, Getachew Dinku Godana

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The degree to which a scholar’s work is cited by others has been regarded as an indicator of its scientific impact relative to other researchers in the web of scholarly communications. Likewise, various metrics based on citation counts have been developed to evaluate the impact of scholarly journals. Recently there has emerged a new research trend aimed at developing impact metrics that consider not only “the raw number of citations received by a scientific agent, but also the importance or influence of the actors who issue those citations.” These new metrics represent scientific impact as a function not of just …

I, An Improved Procedure For Alkene Ozonolysis. Ii, Exploring A New Structural Paradigm For Peroxide Antimalarials., Charles Edward Schiaffo Jan 2011

I, An Improved Procedure For Alkene Ozonolysis. Ii, Exploring A New Structural Paradigm For Peroxide Antimalarials., Charles Edward Schiaffo

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The use of ozone for the transformation of alkenes to carbonyls has been well established. The reaction of ozone with alkenes in this fashion generates either a 1,2,4-trioxolane (ozonide) or a hydroperoxyacetal, either of which must undergo a separate reduction step to provide the desired carbonyl compound. There is considerable interest in being able to perform a reductive ozonolysis to directly provide the carbonyl. Previous reports from the Dussault lab have shown that amine N-oxides are able to perform a reductive ozonolysis. In the course of efforts to expand this reaction to other oxyanions it was realized that water was …

Drugs And Promotions: Basic Arguments On Their Controversial Areas, V. Vatjanapukka Jan 2011

Drugs And Promotions: Basic Arguments On Their Controversial Areas, V. Vatjanapukka

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

“Drugs” are essential for human life. Pharmaceutical companies must have a higher responsibility than other businesses because drugs directly affect lives and health of the consumers. Sometimes, their unwanted impacts cannot be compensated or resolved. Therefore, the pharmaceutical industry should adopt a different framework of thought from other types of marketing. When drug companies run their promotions or lunch any advertising program, doctors and consumers have to be aware of their risks and benefits of the marketing strategies. This paper tries to identify the possible risks and potential benefits of Direct-toConsumer Advertising (DTCA) that may arise. It will allow consumers …
