The Persistence Of "Dr. Watts" In The Core Culture African American Churches In The Memphis Area, Brent Virgil Buhler
The Persistence Of "Dr. Watts" In The Core Culture African American Churches In The Memphis Area, Brent Virgil Buhler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In the mid-eighteenth century, Rev. Samuel Davies introduces slaves to an now archaic form of English Hymnody, which became known as "Dr. Watts." Isaac Watts, Charles and John Wesley, John Newton, and Horatius Bonar, among others wrote many of these hymns. Nearly three hundred years later "Dr. Watts" continues atweekly worship services as an essential component in stabilizing, strengthening, and bringing peace and comfort to many core culture African Americans. The traditionis under-studied inmuch of theUnited States, especially in the Memphia Area. The purpose of this thesis is to confirm the musical characteristics, performance practices, and examine some of the motivations that …

Development Of A New Curriculum In A Positive Youth Development Program: The Project P.A.T.H.S. In Hong Kong, Daniel T. L. Shek, Hing Keung Ma, Rachel C. F. Sun
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
The design of a new curriculum in a positive youth development program (Project P.A.T.H.S.) in Hong Kong is outlined. The Tier 1 Program of the original phase of the Project P.A.T.H.S. is a universal positive youth development program for students in Secondary 1 to Secondary 3 with the curricula developed by a research team comprising scholars in different disciplines (e.g., social work, psychology, and education). The 120 teaching units are designed with reference to 15 positive youth development constructs identified in the successful positive youth development programs. In the extension phase of the project, a new curriculum with 60 teaching …

Conflicts In The Licensing Process For Transcanada's Keystone Xl Pipeline, F. Gregory Hayden
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this report is to investigate and explain conflicts involved in the ongoing licensing process whereby TransCanada is attempting to obtain permission from the U.S. Department of State to build a pipeline (named Keystone XL) from the tar sand oil fields of Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast. The economic concepts important in guiding this investigation are: (1) rules are important, (2) moral hazard, and (3) corporate strategic misinformation.
Economists emphasize the importance of rules for structuring and determining the working of economic institutions and the social institutions that support, regulate, and enforce the economic institutions. The kind …
Augmented-Virtual Reality: How To Improve Education Systems, Manuel Fernandez
Augmented-Virtual Reality: How To Improve Education Systems, Manuel Fernandez
Higher Learning Research Communications
This essay presents and discusses the developing role of virtual and augmented reality technologies in education. Addressing the challenges in adapting such technologies to focus on improving students’ learning outcomes, the author discusses the inclusion of experiential modes as a vehicle for improving students’ knowledge acquisition. Stakeholders in the educational role of technology include students, faculty members, institutions, and manufacturers. While the benefits of such technologies are still under investigation, the technology landscape offers opportunities to enhance face-to-face and online teaching, including contributions in the understanding of abstract concepts and training in real environments and situations. Barriers to technology use …
Unify, Regionalize, Diversify: An Economic Development Agenda For Nevada, Mark Muro
Unify, Regionalize, Diversify: An Economic Development Agenda For Nevada, Mark Muro
Brookings Mountain West Publications
Nevada stands at a crossroads, yet it appears ready to remap its future.
Silver Staters sense that the current economic slump has not been just a temporary reversal but a challenge to the state’s traditional growth model—one that has revealed an economy over-dependent on consumption sectors, prone to booms and busts, and too little invested in innovation and economic diversification. And yet, for all that Nevadans have been early to recognize that the current slump will beget, in some places, innovation and renewal, and in other places erosion—and so requires action.
To that end, this report draws on an intense …

The Problem Of Evil In Augustine's Confessions, Edward Matusek
The Problem Of Evil In Augustine's Confessions, Edward Matusek
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Augustine, the fourth-century Christian philosopher, is perhaps best-known for his spiritual autobiography Confessions. Two aspects of the problem of evil are arguably critical for comprehending his life in Books 1 through 9 of the work. His search for the nature and origin of evil in the various philosophies that he encounters (the intellectual aspect) and his struggles with his own weaknesses (the experiential aspect) are windows for understanding the actual dynamics of his sojourn.
I defend the idea above by providing a fuller examination of the key role that both aspects play in his spiritual journey. Examining relevant events from …

Solution Structure And Dna-Binding Properties Of The Phosphoesterase Domain Of Dna Ligase D, Aswin Natarajan, Kaushik Dutta, Deniz B. Temel, Pravin A. Nair, Stewart Shuman, Ranajeet Ghose

The phosphoesterase (PE) domain of the bacterial DNA repair enzyme LigD possesses distinctive manganese-dependent 3'-phosphomonoesterase and 3'-phosphodiesterase activities. PE exemplifies a new family of DNA end-healing enzymes found in all phylogenetic domains. Here, we determined the structure of the PE domain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa LigD (PaePE) using solution NMR methodology. PaePE has a disordered N-terminus and a well-folded core that differs in instructive ways from the crystal structure of a PaePE•Mn(2+)• sulfate complex, especially at the active site that is found to be conformationally dynamic. Chemical shift perturbations in the presence of primertemplate duplexes with 30-deoxynucleotide, …
Programmers And Forensic Analyses: Accusers Under The Confrontation Clause, Karen Neville
Programmers And Forensic Analyses: Accusers Under The Confrontation Clause, Karen Neville
Duke Law & Technology Review
Recent Supreme Court cases involving the Confrontation Clause have strengthened defendants’ right to face their accusers. Bullcoming v. New Mexico explored the question of whether the testimony of the technician who performs a forensic analysis may be substituted by that of another analyst, and the Court held that producing a surrogate witness who was not sufficiently involved in the analysis violates the confrontation right.
The presumption of infallible technology is fading, and courts may soon realize programmers have greater influence over the ultimate outcome of forensic tests than do the technicians who rely on such analytical tools. The confrontation right, …
Mountains Of Injustice : Social And Environmental Justice In Appalachia, Michele Morrone, Geoffrey L. Buckley
Mountains Of Injustice : Social And Environmental Justice In Appalachia, Michele Morrone, Geoffrey L. Buckley
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Research in environmental justice reveals that low-income and minority neighborhoods in our nation’s cities are often the preferred sites for landfills, power plants, and polluting factories. Those who live in these sacrifice zones are forced to shoulder the burden of harmful environmental effects so that others can prosper. Mountains of Injustice broadens the discussion from the city to the country by focusing on the legacy of disproportionate environmental health impacts on communities in the Appalachian region, where the costs of cheap energy and cheap goods are actually quite high.
Through compelling stories and interviews with people who are fighting for …
