Entering Academic Psychiatry: A Resident's Perspective, Julio Licinio, M.D. Nov 2011

Entering Academic Psychiatry: A Resident's Perspective, Julio Licinio, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

University-based psychiatry residency programs encourage the pursuit of academic careers, both on admission, by favoring applicants with evidence of a commitment to investigation, and after residency training, by selecting as faculty residents who have demonstrated academic and research productivity. While attempting to achieve multiple goals, some residents may be discouraged to pursue an academic career as a result of marked conflict between the clinical and academic components of training. The substantial differences in priorities among psychiatry residents ought to be explored early in residency training by devoting seminars to career planning and by facilitating the pursuit of academic activities under …

The Other Drug War: Societal Attitudes And The Pharmacologic Treatment Of Anxiety Disorders, Bruce Wenokur, D.O., M.P.H. Nov 2011

The Other Drug War: Societal Attitudes And The Pharmacologic Treatment Of Anxiety Disorders, Bruce Wenokur, D.O., M.P.H.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Societal attitudes with respect to mood altering agents have undergone cyclical changes through American history. Cycles of relative tolerance and intolerance affect the perception of psychotropic drugs for illicit use, as well as legitimate medical therapy, often creating confusion between these two realms. This article examines the relationship between the prevailing social climate and the subsequent restrictions placed on the use of opiates. Historical attitudes toward opiate use serve as a model to explore the current social climate as it pertains to the pharmacologic treatment of anxiety. The under treatment of anxiety disorders is hypothesized to result largely from social …

A Comparative Content Analysis Of Emily Dickinson's Letters, Patricia Harrison, M.D., Carol Mcleod, M.A. Nov 2011

A Comparative Content Analysis Of Emily Dickinson's Letters, Patricia Harrison, M.D., Carol Mcleod, M.A.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

To investigate the relationship between creativity and mental illness, a computer content analysis of a random sampling of Emily Dickinson's (ED) letters and a selected sample of ED's "anxiety" letters were compared with speech samples from female subjects with panic disorder (n = 4) and speech samples from a female control group (n = 8). Although this can only be considered a pilot study, the findings suggest that ED's word profiles are more similar to the panic disorder group than to the control group. Limitations of this study (i.e., small sample sizes) and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

As change and reform become more important words in our vocabulary as physicians, I feel reassured that the Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry will continue in its current form. As we developed from an intradepartmental to an international publication we have experienced numerous changes, one of which was the need for funding from outside of Jefferson's residency program.

Oxidative Stress And Heme Oxygenase-1 Regulated Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Differentiation, Luca Vanella, Christopher Sanford Jr., Dong Hyun Kim, Nader G. Abraham, Nabil Ebraheim Nov 2011

Oxidative Stress And Heme Oxygenase-1 Regulated Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Differentiation, Luca Vanella, Christopher Sanford Jr., Dong Hyun Kim, Nader G. Abraham, Nabil Ebraheim

Biochemistry and Microbiology

This paper describes the effect of increased expression of HO-1 protein and increased levels of HO activity on differentiation of bone-marrow-derived human MSCs. MSCs are multipotent cells that proliferate and differentiate into many different cell types including adipocytes and osteoblasts. HO, the rate-limiting enzyme in heme catabolism, plays an important role during MSCs differentiation. HO catalyzes the stereospecific degradation of heme to biliverdin, with the concurrent release of iron and carbon monoxide. Upregulation of HO-1 expression and increased HO activity are essential for MSC growth and differentiation to the osteoblast lineage consistent with the role of HO-1 in hematopoietic stem …

Vitamin D Levels In Peanut Allergic Children, Adam Fowlie, Laura Kim, Trefford Simpson, Harold Kim Nov 2011

Vitamin D Levels In Peanut Allergic Children, Adam Fowlie, Laura Kim, Trefford Simpson, Harold Kim

Department of Medicine Presentations

Background

The prevalence of peanut allergy is increasing. The reasons for this are not entirely known. A factor may be vitamin D (Vit D).

Methods

This study was performed in a referral allergist’s office in Ontario. Prospectively, all patients (<18 years old) with peanut allergy who were tested for peanut specific IgE (PN IgE) also had Vit D measured. All measurements were done between December 2010 and May 2011. The Vit D measure was 25-hydroxy vitamin D. Patients were divided into three groups: deficient (less than 25 nmol/L), insufficient (25-75 nmol/L) and sufficient (75-250 nmol/L). Vit D levels were compared to PN IgE, sex, age, body mass index (BMI) and other allergies.

Results

Fifty peanut allergic patients were included. The mean Vit D level of the patients was 73.8 nmol/L and the 95% confidence interval was 69.6 - 75.7 nmol/L. One patient (2%) had deficient and thirty-one (62%) of the patients had insufficient Vit D levels. Nineteen (38%) had Vit D levels in the sufficient range. There was no correlation between Vit …

Policy initiatives to reform the nation's health system increasingly recognize the need to incorporate public health and prevention strategies. The nation's delivery system for public health, however, varies widely across states and communities in its structure, authority, and capabilities. This session examines research from the growing field of public health services and systems research to identify directions for improving public health delivery.

Substance Use Behavior Among Early-Adolescent Asian American Girls: The Impact Of Psychological And Family Factors, Lin Fang, Kevin Barnes-Ceeney, Steven Schinke Nov 2011

Substance Use Behavior Among Early-Adolescent Asian American Girls: The Impact Of Psychological And Family Factors, Lin Fang, Kevin Barnes-Ceeney, Steven Schinke

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Confronting developmental tasks and challenges associated with bridging two different cultures, Asian American adolescent girls face increasing risks for substance use. Identifying risk and protective factors in this population is essential, particularly when those factors can inform preventive programs. Guided by family interaction theory, the present cross-sectional study explored the associations of psychological and familial factors with use of alcohol, prescription drugs, and other drugs among early-adolescent Asian American girls. Between August 2007 and March 2008, 135 pairs of Asian American girls (mean age 13.21 years, SD = 0.90) and their mothers (mean age 39.86 years, SD = 6.99) were …

Perceptions Of Medical Professionals Towards Sustainability Orientation And Acceptability Of Eco-Friendly Medical Scrubs, Siddharth S. Alashe

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This research explores the perceptions of medical professionals towards sustainability orientation and acceptability of eco-friendly medical scrubs. This study examines the correlation between sustainability orientation and scrub properties as a means of finding the perceptions of medical professionals on the mentioned topic. Also, gender, department of medical professional, their age and work experience, and the price of the eco-friendly scrubs were considered as factors affecting the correlation. This study included surveying the medical professionals who used scrubs as uniforms, by distributing questionnaires and analyzing responses using SPSS.
