Exemplary Practices Of Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Programs With High Pass Rates On The Nclex-Rn, Wynona (Nonie) Marie Wiggins
Student Theses and Dissertations
Baccalaureate nursing programs from the Southern Regional Educational Board whose NCLEX-RN pass rates met or exceeded the national pass rate for 2006-2008 consecutively and who had at least 60 candidates sit for the exam annually were studied to determine the practices utilized to have success on the NCLEX-RN. Fifty programs met the inclusion criteria and were invited to participate. Thirty programs accepted the invitations to participate in the study. Recorded telephone interviews with baccalaureate nursing program directors, chairs, or their designee were conducted. Most of the nursing programs were upper division traditional programs. Some also offered 2nd degree accelerated option. …

The link between EBV infection and Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is strong, but the mechanism underlying that link has been elusive. We have developed a mouse model for EBV-associated BL in which LMP2A, an EBV latency protein, and MYC are expressed in B cells. Our model has demonstrated the ability of LMP2A to accelerate tumor onset, increase spleen size, and bypass p53 inactivation. Here we describe the results of total gene expression analysis of tumor and pretumor B cells from our transgenic mouse model. Although we see many phenotypic differences and changes in gene expression in pretumor B cells, the transcriptional …
Development Of An Environmentally Friendly Binder System For Paper Products, Ashley Rhea Flory
Development Of An Environmentally Friendly Binder System For Paper Products, Ashley Rhea Flory
Student Theses and Dissertations
It is important for industries to find ways to find green chemistries to protect the environment and the paper industry is no exception. Using renewable resources such as plant material will be an excellent substitute for the chemicals that are currently used as paper binders. In this project, carbohydrates, proteins and phenolic compounds were applied to air laid, pressed paper in order to obtain a binder that is as strong as the currently used factory binders while being organic and renewable. Out of the twenty binders surveyed soy protein, gelatin, zein protein, pectin and Salix lignin provided comparable strength results …
Mechanism Of Acetylcholinesterase's Neurotrophic Action On Drg Neurons Of Rat, Naga Venkata Pavan Kumar Kunala
Mechanism Of Acetylcholinesterase's Neurotrophic Action On Drg Neurons Of Rat, Naga Venkata Pavan Kumar Kunala
Student Theses and Dissertations
The fundamental role of enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is to catalyze the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at cholinergic synapses. In addition to its catalytic activity, AChE appears to play a significant non-catalytic role of neurotropic activity on dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons of rat. However the mechanism responsible for AChE's neurotrophic activity is not fully understood. Earlier experiments in Dr. Srivatsan's laboratory demonstrated the binding of fluorophore conjugated AChE to cell surface of DRG neurons. These findings led to my hypothesis that AChE may bind to cell surface protein(s) in DRG neurons, and the resulting protein-protein interaction is responsible for activating downstream signaling …

Are You Textually Active?, Kandace Dyson
Student Theses and Dissertations
Given the frequency of text messaging, there has been some concern about whether or not the use of text language among young people has a negative impact on the written form and comprehension of Standard English. Some believe that text language positively influences literacy skills; whereas, others believe that literacy skills are negatively influenced by its use. This study was designed to explore the knowledge of text language among college students enrolled in different levels of English courses and the relationship between text language knowledge and translation of a message written in text language to SE. Participants were asked to …
Investigation Of Select Ruthenium Compounds As Hds Catalyst Models, Leslie Wayne Foster
Investigation Of Select Ruthenium Compounds As Hds Catalyst Models, Leslie Wayne Foster
Student Theses and Dissertations
The hydordesulfurization (HDS) process is an industrial process that removes sulfur impurities from fossil fuel feedstocks prior to refining. This process includes the use of very high temperatures and pressures of H2 in combination with a sulfided transition metal catalyst. While the exact mechanism for the HDS process is unknown, there are continual strides in improving the process. Limitations in the current HDS models include non-sulfur ligands in the coordination sphere of the central metal. Attempted reactions of cis-[Ru(dmso)4Cl2] with tri-thiocarbonate gave the unexpected fac-[Ru(dmso)3Cl2(OH2)] compound. Successful thiol coordination to CpRu(PPh3)2+ has been demonstrated in the literature. Reactions of [ç6-C6H6RuCl2]2 …
Efficacy Of A Novel Chelator For Mercury Chelation And Distribution, David Harold Clarke
Efficacy Of A Novel Chelator For Mercury Chelation And Distribution, David Harold Clarke
Student Theses and Dissertations
Mercury is found throughout the environment with a distribution on a global scale in nearly all terrestrial to marine environments. Biotransformation of divalent mercury and subsequent bioaccumulation of organo-mercury species is catalyzed by sulfate reducing bacteria. Trophic transport of the resultant methyl mercury, a highly toxic species, leads to upward accumulation in the trophic structure of aquatic environments and ultimately to human exposure through consumption of methyl mercury laden fish. The potential for human health risk has made mercury a high priority environmental contaminant. Research aimed at assessing the within-organism fate of mercury using a genetically tractable mammalian model is …

Children's Knowledge Of Healthy And Unhealthy Foods And Its Correlation With Body Mass Index, Sally Elizabeth Allen
Student Theses and Dissertations
Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in America. Children's knowledge of healthy and unhealthy food could be correlated to their Body Mass Index (BMI). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between children's BMI and their knowledge of healthy and unhealthy foods and to determine if any knowledge differences exist between overweight, obese, and healthy weight children. Participants were 54 kindergarten and 1st grade students in a small rural Arkansas school district. Data were collected quantitatively through a) a 40 question flashcard test in which participants were asked to identify the name of …

3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) inhibitors, commonly known as statins, may possess cancer preventive and therapeutic properties. Statins are effective suppressors of cholesterol synthesis with a well-established risk-benefit ratio in cardiovascular disease prevention. Mechanistically, targeting HMGCR activity primarily influences cholesterol biosynthesis and prenylation of signaling proteins. Pravastatin is a hydrophilic statin that is selectively taken up by a sodium-independent organic anion transporter protein-1B1 (OATP1B1) exclusively expressed in liver. Simvastatin is a hydrophobic statin that enters cells by other mechanisms. Poorly-differentiated and well-differentiated cancer cell lines were selected from various tissues and examined for their response to these two statins. Simvastatin …

The Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) is an environmental sentinel organism used extensively for studies on environmental toxicants and salt (NaCl) homeostasis. Previous research in our laboratory has shown that rapid acclimation of killifish to seawater is mediated by trafficking of CFTR chloride channels from intracellular vesicles to the plasma membrane in the opercular membrane within the first hour in seawater, which enhances chloride secretion into seawater, thereby contributing to salt homeostasis. Acute transition to seawater is also marked by an increase in both mRNA and protein levels of serum glucocorticoid kinase 1 (SGK1) within 15 minutes of transfer. …

Drinking shallow groundwater with naturally elevated concentrations of arsenic is causing widespread disease in many parts of South and Southeast Asia. In the Bengal Basin, growing reliance on deep (>150 m) groundwater has lowered exposure. In the most affected districts of Bangladesh, shallow groundwater concentrations average 100 to 370 μg L−1, while deep groundwater is typically < 10 μg L−1. Groundwater flow simulations have suggested that, even when deep pumping is restricted to domestic use, deep groundwater in some areas of the Bengal Basin is at risk of contamination. However, these simulations have neglected the impedance of As migration by adsorption to aquifer sediments. Here we quantify for the first time As sorption on deeper sediments in situ by replicating the intrusion of shallow groundwater through injection of 1,000 L of deep groundwater modified with 200 μg L−1 of As into a deeper aquifer. Arsenic concentrations in the injected water were reduced by 70% due to adsorption within a single day. Basin-scale modelling indicates that while As adsorption extends the sustainable use of deep groundwater, some areas remain vulnerable; these areas can be prioritized for management and monitoring.

Although viruses have been implicated in central nervous system (CNS) diseases of unknown etiology, including multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the reproducible identification of viral triggers in such diseases has been largely unsuccessful. Here, we explore the hypothesis that viruses need not replicate in the tissue in which they cause disease; specifically, that a peripheral infection might trigger CNS pathology. To test this idea, we utilized a transgenic mouse model in which we found that immune cells responding to a peripheral infection are recruited to the CNS, where they trigger neurological damage. In this model, mice are infected with …

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of death in the United States and has the highest death rate among Blacks. Whereas studies have targeted patients to increase CRC adherence in the general population few studies have focused on improving providers’ adherence to screening guidelines. Also, CRC screening studies among HIV-positive patients consistently show lower screening rates compared to screening rates among HIV negative persons. Results of screening colonoscopy studies among HIV positive patients show higher prevalence of neoplastic lesions and colon cancer is diagnosed at advanced cancer stages; these patients have shorter disease-free survival compared to HIV-negative patients. …

Possible selves theory (Markus & Nurius, 1986) suggests that future-oriented expectations, fears, and strategies are constrained by feedback in one's sociocultural context. The current paper represents a preliminary look into the relationship between support in one's immediate context and the development of strategies for the achievement of desired future selves. Youthful offenders (N = 543) were surveyed in secured treatment facilities in Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon. Program belonging was a consistent predictor of strategy generation among both males and females, and attributional support from a staff person was significant among males. The findings support further examination …
