Valor Wrought Asunder: The Mexican General Officer Corps In The U.S.-Mexican War, 1846-1847., Javier Ernesto Sanchez
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis presents a reappraisal of the performance of the Mexican general officer corps during the U.S.-Mexican War, 1846-1847. Often negatively libeled, Mexicos defeat is often attributed in no small part to the moral shortcomings of the generals who led her armies. By a detailed analysis of their background, motivations, and military careers, a more accurate perspective regarding the Mexican general officer corps' performance during the war can be obtained by the reader. It is the argument of this thesis that the operational tactics and organizational weakness of the Army's High Command sufficiently account for the failures of the generals …
Cplop - Cal Poly's Library Of Pyroprints, Kevin Webb
Cplop - Cal Poly's Library Of Pyroprints, Kevin Webb
Computer Engineering
California Polytechnic Library of Pyroprints, CPLOP, is a web driven data-base application that stores data from the biology’s departments E. coli Pyrosequencing project. Some of this data was stored in Excel datasheets, while data from the pyrosequencing machines was stored as just a list of random .xml files. There was no useful way to organize and store the massive amounts of data from multiple file sources in one location, nor to perform the complicated searches and comparisons that the project requires. CPLOP’s primary goal is to store such data in three organized tables that relate to one another. It was …

Use Of The Health Belief Model To Assess Hand Hygiene Knowledge, Perceptions, And Practices Of Saudi Students Studying In The U.S., Najla Khateeb
All Theses
Many factors influence hygiene but those that have the greatest impact vary widely across population groups. Our aim was to characterize hand hygiene practices of Saudi students studying in the U.S. by completing two objectives: (1) assess hand hygiene knowledge, perceptions, and practices of Saudi students studying in the U.S. and (2) determine the relationship among knowledge, perceptions, and practices.
A modified version of the Health Belief Model was the theoretical framework to characterize hand hygiene practices. A web-based instrument was posted to the ¬DSaudis Studying in USAÁÂ Facebook page. The instrument was prepared in English then translated into Arabic. …

The Changing Geography And Fortunes Of Dublin Haute Cuisine Restaurants, 1958-2008, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Articles
This paper considers the changing geography and fortunes of Dublin’s haute cuisine restaurants over the last half century, placing them within both a national and international context. Ireland’s place within the global story of food is discussed, and the paper illustrates links between Dublin and European and global trends. The paper points out that Dublin in the 1950s could be seen as the gastronomic capital of the British Isles. The leading restaurateurs are briefly profiled, and the decline, stagnation, and gradual re-birth of Dublin’s haute cuisine restaurants over the 1958-2008 period is charted and discussed. The paper combines data from …
Testing Hypotheses Of The Demographic Transition In San Borja, Bolivia, Kristin Snopkowski
Testing Hypotheses Of The Demographic Transition In San Borja, Bolivia, Kristin Snopkowski
Anthropology ETDs
Understanding the demographic transition, a trend in which fertility drops after a period of population growth, has been an important area of anthropological and demographic research. This dissertation seeks to understand fertility change by testing five models that have been presented in the literature. The predictions that are unique to each hypothesis are tested in San Borja, Bolivia, a community currently undergoing a fertility transition. Low modern fertility seems counter-intuitive given the increase of individual wealth, but there have not been sufficient tests to lead to an understanding of why this occurs. Informational hypotheses explain fertility transition as a change …
Party Identification, Values, Risk Perceptions And Public Opinion On Climate Change, Jacob Sohlberg
Party Identification, Values, Risk Perceptions And Public Opinion On Climate Change, Jacob Sohlberg
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
While the scientific debate over climate change has been settled, the U.S. public is profoundly divided. Some people view climate change as a huge problem that needs to be resolved, whereas others dismiss it as non-issue. It is vital that we understand what is driving attitudes on this issue since climate change is likely to alter our world in multiple, mostly negative, ways. In this dissertation, I rely on experiments, surveys and content analysis to examine the relative merits of two broad perspectives on what is driving public opinion on climate change. One perspective centers on the role of party …
Functional Analysis Of Poliovirus Protein 2catpase In Viral Rna Replication And Encapsidation Using Alanine Scanning Mutagenesis, Chunling Wang
Functional Analysis Of Poliovirus Protein 2catpase In Viral Rna Replication And Encapsidation Using Alanine Scanning Mutagenesis, Chunling Wang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Polypeptide 2CATPase is one of the most thoroughly studied but least understood proteins in the life cycle of poliovirus. Within the protein, multiple functional domains, important for uncoating, host cell membrane alterations, RNA replication and encapsidation have previously been identified. In this study, charged to alanine scanning mutagenesis was used to generate conditional-lethal mutations in hitherto uncharacterized domains of the 2CATPase polypeptide, particularly those possibly involved in morphogenesis. Adjacent or clustered charged amino acids (2-4), scattered along the 2CATPase coding sequence, were replaced with alanines. RNA transcripts of mutant poliovirus cDNA clones were transfected into HeLa cells. Subsequently, ten lethal, …

Flannery O'Connor: Revelations Of The Displaced Soul, Rose M. Tomasi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Flannery O'Connor's thematic paradigm incorporates spiritual overtones, irony and black comedy into her works. The characters appear to possess displaced souls that require some type of spiritual and moral awareness through a shocking intervention. This paper provides an analysis of the introspective development that occurs within the characters; and I will examine the process in which the characters seem to come to shocking revelations about their flawed view of life. Furthermore, an investigation of the protagonist's journey from selfishness to self-awareness will demonstrate the human flaws and weakness in their lives. The circumstances surrounding these outcomes is tragic, yet they …
Data-Adaptive Hierarchical Protocols For Wireless Sensor Networks And Health Monitoring Systems, Guofeng Hou
Data-Adaptive Hierarchical Protocols For Wireless Sensor Networks And Health Monitoring Systems, Guofeng Hou
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Recent advances in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, wireless communications, and digital electronics have enabled the development of low-cost, low-power wireless sensor nodes that are small in size and communicate untethered over short distances. Networking together hundreds or thousands of wireless sensor nodes allows users to accurately monitor a remote environment by intelligently combining data from the individual nodes. Such networks require robust wireless communication protocols that are energy efficient, data transmission efficient and support long network lifetime. In this Ph.D. dissertation, we analyzed and implemented the Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol, a leading protocol architecture for wireless sensor networks. …

Challenges And Struggles Of Esl Novice Teachers, F. Senom
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The transition from the teacher education institution to life in a real classroom has been characterized as a type of reality shock in which beginning teachers realize that the ideals they formed while training may not be appropriate for the realism they are faced with during. their first year of teaching (Farrell, 2003). Unfortunately, this concern is not fully addressed in schools in Malaysia as beginning teachers have the same responsibility as a teacher with many years of service. Marshall et'the (1990) suggest that it is not until they have survived the initial shock of the first year that novices …

Democratization of education implied that all children of school age should have the right to be in schools and also have the right to be assisted to achieve as much as what their cohorts have achieved or what has been specified by the curriculum. This is in line with the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child (1989 & 1990). However, owing to variations in factors such as family economic and education backgrounds, ethnicity, school locations, school and teacher distributations, allocation of school funds, diversity in the implementations of specific reforms, the presence of physically and mentally handicapped …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
This paper examines the impact of economic factors on bilateral trade flows between Malaysia and the Gee through estimations of panel data using a gravity model. In particular, the paper compares the determinants of bilateral trade between Malaysia and two regions, the non-traditional Gulf alliance and the traditional ASEAN counterpart, to provide insights for leveraging opportunities through trade with the former. The gravity estimates imply the importance of size effects, similarities in GDP and differences in factor endowments as drivers of trade flows between Malaysia and the Gee, underlying the fact that inter-industry trade dominates these flows. The opposite holds …

Yangge Dance: The Rhythm Of Liability For Medical Malpractice In The People's Republic Of China, Zhu Wang, Ken Oliphant
Yangge Dance: The Rhythm Of Liability For Medical Malpractice In The People's Republic Of China, Zhu Wang, Ken Oliphant
Chicago-Kent Law Review
This paper summarises the development of liability for medical malpractice in the People's Republic of China, beginning with the establishment of a formal system of administrative liability in 1987, its refinement in 2002, and the broadly contemporaneous judicial recognition of a concurrent tortious liability under general civil law. All these developments may be said to have furthered the interests of patients. The incorporation of liability for medical malpractice into the Tort Liability Law of 2009, however, arguably marks a step backwards, subordinating the interests of patients in favor of the interests of the medical community, and further reforms in the …

Malpractice In Scandinavia, Vibe Ulfbeck, Mette Hartlev, Mårten Schultz
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The article describes the special Scandinavian patient insurance system which secures compensation for patients in malpractice cases. For all practical purposes, the insurance based systems have replaced ordinary tort law rules in malpractice cases in Scandinavia. Thus, the basic feature of these systems is that proof of fault is not a requirement for obtaining compensation. Other criteria which are more favourable to the patient are applicable. The article concludes that in general the compensations systems have been successful in making it easier for the patients to obtain compensation. However, the systems also face challenges, some of which stem from the …

Potential Of Three Brassica Cover Crops For Biofumigation In The Field And The Relationship Between Soil Myrosinase And Biofumigation Efficacy, Zachariah Hansen
All Theses
A greenhouse study was set up in January 2011 to investigate the effect of soil myrosinase concentration and Bacillus spp. on the release efficiency of isothiocyanates (ITCs) from freeze-dried `Pacific Gold' mustard leaf tissue after incorporation into soil. Seventeen diverse soil samples collected from various regions of South Carolina were used in the study. A correlation analysis was conducted to determine if soil myrosinase was positively correlated with ITC concentrations after mustard incorporation. ITC concentrations were then analyzed with soilborne Bacillus spp. populations, bean emergence, disease incidence, and shoot weight to identify significant correlations. Finally, the effect of freeze-dried `Pacific …

Do The Ethics Of Authorship Matter?: Exploring The Implications Of The Office Of Research Integrity's Narrow Definition Of Research Misconduct, Caroline Linvill
All Theses
Over the past 25 years, federal government entities have become involved in defining and regulating misconduct in scientific research. Consistently, these definitions of research misconduct forbid three key actions--falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism--but do not take into account other professional communication issues, mainly authorship. This lack of acknowledgement and regulation of authorship--particularly from the Office of Research Integrity, the nation's highest research ethics body--seems to imply and communicate that the ethics of authorship are not important in science. However, this thesis demonstrates, through rhetorical, historical and interview research, that authorship ethics do matter to scientists; in fact, authorship is a leading …
