Observations Of Brachygnathia Superior (Underbite) In Wild Ruminates In Western Montana, Usa, J. A. Hoy, G. T. Haas, R. D. Hoy, Pamela Hallock

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Since spring of 1995 developmental malformations have been observed on many species of vertebrates. The most frequently observed of a range of skeletal anomalies is brachygnathia superior, also called mandibular prognathia, resulting from underdevelopment in length and width of the premaxillary bone forward of the upper premolars on ruminant species. To quantify these observations, facial anatomy was examined for bone and dental malformations on 1061 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) that were accident-killed or died of natural causes between January 1996 and December 2010 in northern Ravalli County in the Bitterroot Valley of west-central, Montana, USA. Observations of brachygnathia …

Colonial Waterbird Survey, Brent Ortego, Marc Ealy, Greg Creacy, Larry Lebeau

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff and volunteers conducted ground and air surveys of inland colonial waterbird nest sites at 584 locations in Texas from 1973 through 2004. There was an average of 472,466 nesting pairs sighted per year at all colonies. Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea), Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) and Great Egret (Ardea alba) were the most abundant species. The Oaks and Prairie Bird Conservation Region (BCR 21) had the most colonies with 171 and 269,210 nesting pairs. The total for the average densities for each colony from ground surveys from 1981-1990 in …

Cassin’S Sparrows Nesting On The Southern High Plains Of Texas, Warren C. Conway, Eileen Johnson Dec 2011

Cassin’S Sparrows Nesting On The Southern High Plains Of Texas, Warren C. Conway, Eileen Johnson

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

We monitored 15 Cassin’s Sparrow (Peucaea cassini) nests in two mesquite (Prosopis spp.) dominated grassland sites on the Southern High Plains of Texas during 2001. Mayfield daily survival rate was 0.942 ± 0.194 (30% nest success) and two unsuccessful nests were parasitized by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater). Although constrained by few nests in this study, we report a comparatively higher parasitism frequency (13%) and lower nest success than other regional (Texas) studies, but overall parasitism frequency in this study mirrors rates reported throughout the geographic range. The impacts of parasitism on Cassin’s Sparrow populations remain unknown. Future studies focusing upon …

Theses and Dissertations

“It's a simple approach. Sustainable architecture looks to the future by looking at the past.”

Stephen Gist

The research topic came up during the master studies on sustainable design courses which influenced the reflection on present thermal situation of buildings in Kosova and personal interest on how to contribute to its improvement with the new knowledge pursued.

This research focuses on sustainable renovation possibility in Kosova, illustrated by a case-study, more precisely an existing kindergarten building in Prishtina. The majority of these kinds of building were constructed about 30 years ago and apart from the ageing of the façade, roof …

Insurance, Stephen M. Schatz, Stephen L. Cotter, Bradley S. Wolff

Mercer Law Review

What constitutes an "occurrence," as defined by a commercial general liability policy, was again a significant focus of the appellate courts during the survey year. The Georgia Supreme Court finally resolved opposite positions taken by federal courts and state courts in Georgia, deciding that negligent faulty workmanship by a contractor resulting in damage to other property constitutes an occurrence. However, when an insured acts negligently, but with foresight, expectation, or design, such conduct will not be a covered occurrence. The Georgia Court of Appeals also reinforced the correct legal standard to consider when deciding whether an insured is justified in …

Crisis Of Governance And Urban Violence In Nigeria, Akeem Ayofe Akinwale, Adeyinka Abideen Aderinto

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

This paper examines the crisis of governance and urban violence in Nigeria, using a documentary technique with an analysis of several theories including the Frustration and Aggression Theory, the Social Disorganization Theory, the Social Control Theory and Ecological Theory. It is argued that the outbreaks of violence have become unprecedented across the Nigerian cities, while successive attempts at promoting peace in the country are yet to succeed significantly. This situation is examined in the light of the dynamics of political instability and its concomitant outcomes. Several dimensions of urban violence including ethno-religious violence, electoral violence, youth militancy, and civil unrest …

Who And Where To Punish In A Criminally Loaded Conflict Of Northern Uganda: A Dilemmatic Juxtaposition Of Forms Of Juxtaposition Of Forms Of Justice In The Northern Uganda Conflict, Nathan Muwereza

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Much has been said about the conflict in northern Uganda, a civil conflict that has caused untold suffering in Uganda and the general Great Lakes region of Africa. However, little is made concrete and precisely analysed about how applicable or whether different forms of justice can be used to construct and reconstruct social order in the region. In this article, some of the varied literature is contextualized within victims’ perceptions in northern Uganda. It links such perceptions to the choice of forms and approaches to justice and the implications and/or potential for outbreak of latent conflicts. Using inferences from field …

United States Aid To Kenya: A Study On Regional Security And Counterterrorism Assistance Before And After 9/11, Samuel L. Aronson Dec 2011

United States Aid To Kenya: A Study On Regional Security And Counterterrorism Assistance Before And After 9/11, Samuel L. Aronson

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Following 9/11 and the beginning of the global War on Terror, it became obvious that the United States needed an ally in East Africa. Kenya, a country that has remained relatively stable while surrounded by regional insecurities, was chosen by the U.S. as an African ally to which large sums of aid and resources would be sent. United States assistance to Kenya is largely given for developmental and humanitarian purposes but millions of dollars each year are directed specifically towards regional security and anti-terrorism. This observational paper highlights the differences in U.S. aid to Kenya before and after 2001. Using …

America Hates The Westboro Baptist Church: The Battle To Preserve The Funerals Of Fallen Soldiers, Kendra L. Suesz Dec 2011

America Hates The Westboro Baptist Church: The Battle To Preserve The Funerals Of Fallen Soldiers, Kendra L. Suesz

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) has gained national attention over the past several years with their fiery protests at the funerals of soldiers killed in action. Citizens outraged by the actions of the WBC pressured the lawmakers in 45 states to enact legislation curtailing the protesters’ access to funerals. Claiming that the laws infringe upon their First Amendment rights, the WBC has challenged these legislations in court, and will continue to do so. While the lawmakers are struggling to enact effective barriers against the WBC’s access to funerals, the American public has taken matters into their own hands. At many …

Corporate Office Employee Analysis: Transformation From Closed Office Layout To Open Floor Plan Environment, Stephanie J. Fanger Dec 2011

Corporate Office Employee Analysis: Transformation From Closed Office Layout To Open Floor Plan Environment, Stephanie J. Fanger

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The office workplace within the United States has undergone monumental changes in the past century. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has cited that Americans spend an average of 90 percent of their time indoors. As human beings can often spend a majority of the hours in the day at their workplace, more so than their home, it is important to understand the effects of the built environment on the American office employee. In order to stay current with modern times, General Dynamics, a corporation located in Scottsdale, Arizona implemented a renovation of interior space. This thesis examines the transformation from …

Exploratory Case Study: How The Inclusion Of Nature In The Design Of Learning Environments Affects Learning Among Children, Cheryl Knodel Dec 2011

Exploratory Case Study: How The Inclusion Of Nature In The Design Of Learning Environments Affects Learning Among Children, Cheryl Knodel

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

The theoretical framework of Stephen R. Kellert linking nature and the built environment was used as the basis for this research. This case study research was conducted to describe the effect nature had on learning among children 3 to 6 years of age attending two north central Florida Montessori learning environments. Methods were examined by which this phenomenon might be studied in more detail in order to: (a) provide verification of the independent and dependent variables, (b) establish the empirical measure of learning outcomes, and (c) provide the refinement of the variable learning outcomes as influenced by nature.

A qualitative …

Many Paths, One Journey: Mapping The Routes To Information Literacy, Margy Macmillan Dec 2011

Many Paths, One Journey: Mapping The Routes To Information Literacy, Margy Macmillan

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

Students gain information literacy skills from a range of sources, not all of which involve direct librarian intervention. These skills grow and diversify over the course of their studies in ways that pre/post test research protocols cannot capture. So how can we understand how they learn what they know? This presentation describes a long-term project using the Information Skills résumé as a case study of gathering, analyzing and using qualitative data to better understand student learning and thereby improve information literacy instruction. The Information Skills résumé tool, used to gather information from journalism students over five years, showed development of …

Wikipedia, Ipods, And Chickens: An Active Learning Exercise To Teach Evaluation Of Information, Latisha Reynolds, Anna Marie Johnson

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

Librarians at the University of Louisville developed an evaluation of information exercise that is completely interactive. Students learn evaluation skills by participating in a small-group exercise, after which, the groups teach their classmates what they have learned.

Each small-group is assigned a different publication to evaluate such as a book, a website, a scholarly article, magazine or newspaper. They also have questions to answer in order to evaluate each source. After they evaluate the sources, each group chooses a student to present the information in front of the class.

The librarian acts as a facilitator to guide the students and …

Trail Mix: Buffet Style Offerings Using Delicious Bookmarking, E. Anne Kelly Dec 2011

Trail Mix: Buffet Style Offerings Using Delicious Bookmarking, E. Anne Kelly

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

This "recipe based and food themed" presentation will focus on the effective use of freely available web 2.0 technology on the web (delicious), and how it has transformed student access, engagement, and library use of the education materials available at Laurier’s library.

Because traditional cataloguing is limited in how in-depth subject headings can realistically be and practice has proven that subject description decided upon by non-practitioners can serve to obscure rather than clarify access to great materials. Finding curriculum related materials has proven very difficult for teacher education students given their needs (grade 2 math, about fractions), so a "delicious" …

The Monetary Effects Of Deer Damage On The Environment, Scott Mendlik Dec 2011

The Monetary Effects Of Deer Damage On The Environment, Scott Mendlik

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The focus of my study was deer damage that occurred to crops and trees in Northeast Nebraska, around Wisner in Cuming County. I collected data from corn fields and harvest yields to determine the monetary losses landowners receive to deer damage. The damage can be anywhere from minimal to significant and affects each person differently. I study used test plots to collect data for an average damage per acre, and variable-sized plots to accurately estimate the level of damage occurred. I also incorporated data from tree nurseries to estimate the damage tree farmers and landowners would have when planting new …

A Health Impact Assessment Of Mixed Use Redevelopment Nodes And Corridors In Lincoln, Nebraska, Katie Clear

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Obesity is a growing threat to America’s health. The national rate of obesity is 34% (Health Consequences, 2011), and Lincoln, Nebraska is not far behind that trend at 20.7% (BRFSS, 2011). Increasing physical activity is one way to reduce weight gain, (Edwards, 2008) and further studies show that small changes to the built environment can induce people to use alternative and more active forms of transportation such as biking, walking, and public transportation (Edwards, 2008; Zheng, 2008). The 2040 Comprehensive Plan for Lincoln, NE includes language to create a more walkable community. The proposal is to redevelop existing areas within …

Empathy-Based Conservation: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Conservation Policy And Decision-Making, Kaitlyn Delashmutt

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

In the late 20th century, neuroscientists in Italy discovered a neuron in the brain capable of mentally mimicking the emotions derived from the actions of others (Rizzolatti and Craighero, 2004). It is the process that makes your elbow ache when someone else knocks their elbow on the counter or the uncontrollable smile that creeps up when someone smiles at you. No questions asked, people intuitively sense what others are feeling. The old school of thought was that humans deduced through logic and reason the actions of others and interpreted the emotions through a rational process (Carew et al, 2008). …
