Mentoring As A Professional Development Tool In Preparing The Next Generation Of Leaders In The North Carolina Community College System, Manuel C. Dudley Jan 2011

Mentoring As A Professional Development Tool In Preparing The Next Generation Of Leaders In The North Carolina Community College System, Manuel C. Dudley

Dissertations

The North Carolina community college is approaching 50 years of existence in 2013. It is a community college system that is respected both nationally and internationally. The economic downturn of the United States has created a period of record enrollment in the community college, as individuals seek upgrades in training, work skills, and educational attainment. This period of record enrollment is not without challenges. Budgetary constraints, a consumer demand for easier access to classes through online and distance learning, and an increase in the racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the student population has created a proverbial perfect storm. Many …

Personality Differences In Never-Married Versus Divorced Individuals In Later Life Using The Neo Pi-R, Krystle Disney

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Previous research has shown that personality disorder symptoms are significantly higher in divorced and never-married individuals compared to married individuals. Although personality pathology is elevated in these two groups, specific trait differences between the two are still unclear. In a large representative community sample: N = 1473) of older adults between the ages of 55-64, a multivariate analysis of variance was conducted on the 30 facets of the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised using data from divorced, never-married, and married participants. Significant differences between marital groups were found in 15 facets: four Neuroticism, five Extraversion, two Openness, two Agreeableness, and two Conscientiousness). …

The Experience Of Senior Housing For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Seniors: An Exploratory Study, Kathleen Margaret Sullivan

Dissertations and Theses

By the year 2030, 20% of the U.S. population will be 65 years of age or older. An increase in the demand for supportive health and social services is expected with the aging of the population. Demand for senior housing is expected to grow, too. This study explores what the social environment offers to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors who relocated to LGBT retirement communities. Previous research asked LGBT seniors who did not live in LGBT senior housing about their housing preferences. The present study, for the first time, asked residents of existing LGBT senior living communities to …

Grief Among Dementia Caregivers: A Comparison Of Two Assessment Systems, Elizabeth Mulligan Jan 2011

Grief Among Dementia Caregivers: A Comparison Of Two Assessment Systems, Elizabeth Mulligan

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Research suggests that family caregivers of people with dementia may experience grief prior to the death of their care recipients, in part because of the series of losses they experience and the chronic nature of caregiving. Methods for assessing predeath grief, however, are just beginning to be developed, and basic questions about measurement remain. The purpose of the current study was to identify areas of overlap and disjunction in two self-report measures of predeath grief, one adapted from the postdeath literature: the Prolonged Grief Disorder Inventory) and one designed specifically for use with dementia caregivers: the Marwit-Meuser Caregiver Grief Inventory-Short …

Intergenerational Ties In Context: Grandparents Caring For Grandchildren In China, Guangya Liu, Feinian Chen, Christine A. Mair Jan 2011

Intergenerational Ties In Context: Grandparents Caring For Grandchildren In China, Guangya Liu, Feinian Chen, Christine A. Mair

Faculty Scholarship

Guided by theories and empirical research on intergenerational relationships, we examine the phenomenon of grandparents caring for grandchildren in contemporary China. Using a longitudinal dataset (China Health and Nutrition Survey), the authors document a high level of structural and functional solidarity in grandparent-grandchildren relationships. Intergenerational solidarity is indicated by a high rate of coresidence between grandchildren and grandparents, a sizable number of skipped-generation households (no parent present), extensive childcare involvement by non-coresidential grandparents, and a large amount of care provided by coresidential grandparents. Multivariate analysis further suggests that grandparents’ childcare load is adaptive to familial needs, as reflected by the …

The Provider-Monopoly Problem In Health Care, Clark C. Havighurst, Barak D. Richman Jan 2011

The Provider-Monopoly Problem In Health Care, Clark C. Havighurst, Barak D. Richman

Faculty Scholarship

Although federal judges have resisted giving due effect to standard antitrust principles in scrutinizing mergers of nonprofit hospitals, the presence of health insurance makes it especially important to oppose monopoly in health services markets. U.S.-style health insurance gives monopolist providers extraordinary pricing freedom, thus exacerbating monopoly’s usual redistributive effects. Significant allocative inefficiencies - albeit not the kind generally associated with monopoly - also result when the monopolist is a nonprofit hospital. Because it is probably impossible to undo past hospital mergers creating undue market power, we suggest some alternative remedies. One is to apply antitrust rules against "tying" arrangements so …

The Effects Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder On Fixations And Saccades During A Simulated Driving Task, Jessica R. Michaelis Jan 2011

The Effects Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder On Fixations And Saccades During A Simulated Driving Task, Jessica R. Michaelis

HIM 1990-2015

Individuals who have Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) experience adverse effects relating to driving; in addition, they experience deficits in scanning ability (Barkely et.al, 1996; Fischer et al., 2007; Munoz et al., 2003; Naja-Raja et al., 2007). The present study examined the effects of ADHD on eye tracking while driving. Ten participants consisting of both ADHD and individuals who do not have ADHD were included in this study. It was hypothesized that individuals who have ADHD will make more saccadic eye movements and thus shorter fixations than individuals who do not have ADHD. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that despite the fact …

Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Igf1r By Key Micrornas In Long-Lived Mutant Mice, Ruqiang Liang, Amit Khanna, Senthilkumar Muthusamy, Na Li, Harshini Sarojini, John J. Kopchick, Michal M. Masternak, Andrzej Bartke, Eugenia Wang

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Long-lived mutant mice, both Ames dwarf and growth hormone receptor genedisrupted or knockout strains, exhibit heightened cognitive robustness and altered IGF1 signaling in the brain. Here, we report, in both these long-lived mice, that three up-regulated lead microRNAs, miR-470, miR-669b, and miR-681, are involved in posttranscriptional regulation of genes pertinent to growth hormone/IGF1 signaling. All three are most prominently localized in the hippocampus and correspond to reduced expression of key IGF1 signaling genes: IGF1, IGF1R, and PI3 kinase. The decline in these genes expression translates into decreased phosphorylation of downstream molecules AKT and FoxO3a. Cultures transfected with either miR-470, miR-669b, …

The Influence Of Travel Experience On Mature Travelers’ Quality Of Life, Yawei Wang, Francis A. Mcguire, Bin Zhou

Department of Hospitality and Tourism Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of past travel experience (i.e., number of trips and number of days away from home in last year), and on mature travelers’ quality of life (i.e., self-perceived health and global life satisfaction). A total number of 217 respondents (50+) in a southern state were used in this study. Path analysis (PROC CALIS in SAS) was performed to test the proposed model. An estimation of the proposed theoretical model revealed that the model fit the data. However, the model should be further examined and applied with caution.

Old Is An Attitude - Age Is A Concept: A Qualitative Study On Aging And Ageism With Guidelines For Expressive Therapies Literature, Steven Durost

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

Mental health professionals who work with people over 65 have been shown to exhibit subtle and overt ageist attitudes. Many of these misconceptions were based on societal perceptions and ageism stereotypes arising from contemporary research performed on a non-representative portion of people over 65. Nursing home residents representing only 4.2% of the older adult population have been studied and the results of those studies have been generalized to represent all older adults. Few studies have given voice to the 95.8% of well older adults living independently. It was held if older adults were listened to, guiding information could be gained …

The Trials Of A Comfort Woman, Erica Park Jan 2011

The Trials Of A Comfort Woman, Erica Park

CMC Senior Theses

The trials of a comfort woman was never revealed after the conclusion of WWII. More than half a century has passed before the name was uttered on the international stage. Why the sudden break of silence? What is the response of the Japanese government. In this paper, we discuss the issue of the comfort women and the the political implications it holds on Japan. Japan's failure to accept wartime reparation, largely due to Allied intervention, has resulted in the widening gap between Japan and Asia. This paper focuses on the combination of increased US influence as a result of the …

Dying Today: Perspectives Of The Modern Hospice Worker, Nicholas Jay Mac Murray

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

From a sociological standpoint, death is relatively difficult to research. While some individuals may describe near-death experiences, the actual act of death cannot be fully known to the living. The purpose of this study is to gain insight into the nature of death and dying in the United States today. This research examines the perspective of modern hospice workers. These individuals work near death on a regular basis and therefore have a privileged understanding of what death is like in US society today. Data consist of ten in-depth interviews with hospice/ palliative-care workers in the Midwestern United States. Respondents were …

Challenges Of Neuropsychological Testing With Asian American Adults: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Heejin Kim Jan 2011

Challenges Of Neuropsychological Testing With Asian American Adults: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Heejin Kim

Theses and Dissertations

The present study is a critical analysis of literature surrounding the challenges faced during neuropsychological testing with Asian American adults. This dissertation will provide a comprehensive overview and critically analyze what is known with regards to neuropsychological assessment of Asian individuals, challenges that psychologists face in conducting culturally competent neuropsychological assessment of this population, and recommendations for conducting such assessments. Current literature reveals how confounds such as culture, acculturation, language, and the inappropriate use of tests and normative data can impact scores and subsequent treatment recommendations. Given these confounds, recommendations will be made regarding the neuropsychological test selection, test administration, …

Older adults make up a large and increasing portion of the population (U.S. apply those assessments to the evaluation of verbal behavior in older adults with and without dementia. The research addressed two questions. First, in what way do verbal behavior problems differ between older adults with and without dementia? Second, does language deteriorate in a pattern compatible with Skinner's analysis of functionally independent verbal operants? Thirty-one participants were categorized into Control (n=15) and Dementia (n=16) Groups based on their score on the Dementia Rating Scale-2. Verbal behavior assessments were administered to participants on two occasions, separated by one week. …

Hemispatial Neglect : A Guide For Healthcare Professionals, Jamie Jeffers Jan 2011

Hemispatial Neglect : A Guide For Healthcare Professionals, Jamie Jeffers

Honors Capstones

The development of hemispatial neglect is especially common after a person experiences a stroke. and the importance of this connection is immense. As the baby boomers grow older, a larger portion of the population will be composed of older adults. Additionally, we are seeing an increase in the number of individuals having strokes, and they are occurring at increasingly younger ages. This is an urgent and escalating problem, especially in the United States, where stroke is the leading cause of death. Until we can decrease the number of strokes experienced, we must learn all that we can to help alleviate …

Neighborhood Context As A Predictor Of Nursing Home Placement Among Older Adults, David Russell Buys Jan 2011

Neighborhood Context As A Predictor Of Nursing Home Placement Among Older Adults, David Russell Buys

All ETDs from UAB

Persons who are aging face an increased risk of adverse health events and decreased levels of personal competencies, potentially inhibiting their ability to age in place. Sometimes, nursing home placement (NHP) may be imperative, especially if persons experience environmental docility-- an incongruence of their physical capacity with their environment. This study links the neighborhood disadvantage literature with Lawton's environmental press and environmental docility theories to examine how the environment interacts with individual level variables to impact likelihood of NHP. Findings suggest that there is not a direct link between living in a disadvantaged context and likelihood of NHP, but that …
