Automated Detection Of Dust Clouds, Sources, And Direction From Noaa-Avhrr Satellite Imagery, Mohammed Qassim Alkhatib Jan 2011

Automated Detection Of Dust Clouds, Sources, And Direction From Noaa-Avhrr Satellite Imagery, Mohammed Qassim Alkhatib

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This research is mainly focused on automatically locating dust sources and estimating their transport direction in NOAA-AVHRR images. Applications of AVHRR images may include agricultural assessment, producing maps of large area, and to retrieve various geophysical parameters. The AVHRR simultaneously records five bands of data, in our research, we focused on bands four and five since these wavelengths highlight the absorption and subsequent emission of thermal radiation by the silicate particles in the dust storms.

In this research, we propose a new method to detect dust clouds on satellite images. The approach we propose involves the use of an image …

Bab Edh-Dhra', Numeira, And The Biblical Patriarchs: A Chronological Study, Kris J. Udd Jan 2011

Bab Edh-Dhra', Numeira, And The Biblical Patriarchs: A Chronological Study, Kris J. Udd

Dissertations

Problem. Bab edh-Dhra' and Numeira have been identified by archaeologists as possible candidates for two of the biblical cities of the plain, but their existence in the Early Bronze Age III is too early to match the biblical narrative (Gen 19) by many chronologies of ancient Canaan. This study sought to determine if there is sufficient flexibility in the archaeological and biblical chronologies to make the identification of Bab edh-Dhra' and Numeira with the cities of the plain a viable interpretation.

Method. The range of dates possible for both the archaeological data and the biblical narratives was analyzed. …

Biology Faculty Publications

Antarctic krill Euphausia superba is a predominant species in the Southern Ocean, it is very sensitive to climate change, and it supports large stocks of fishes, seabirds, seals and whales in Antarctic marine ecosystems. Modern krill stocks have been estimated directly by net hauls and acoustic surveys; the historical krill density especially the long-term one in the Southern Ocean, however, is unknown. Here we inferred the relative krill population changes along the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) over the 20th century from the trophic level change of Antarctic fur seal Arctocephalus gazella using stable carbon (d13C) and nitrogen (d15N) isotopes of …

Indigenous Political Participation: The Key To Rights Realization In The Andes, Stephanie Selekman Jan 2011

Indigenous Political Participation: The Key To Rights Realization In The Andes, Stephanie Selekman

Human Rights & Human Welfare

"There is no way back, this is our time, the awakening of the indigenous people. We'll keep fighting till the end. Brother Evo Morales still has lots to do, one cannot think that four years are enough after 500 years of submission and oppression,” said Fidel Surco, a prominent indigenous leader, reflecting on Bolivia’s first indigenous president entering his second term (Carroll & Schipani 2009).

The Andean region is particularly appropriate for examining indigenous political rights because 34-40 million indigenous people reside mostly in this region. The actualization of human rights for Andean indigenous groups is an inherently complex issue, …

Wild Country Hall: Children’S Learning At A Residential Outdoor Education Centre., Anthony Thomas Rea

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis is about learning at a residential outdoor education centre [pseudonym:- Wild County Hall]. It poses and answers three questions: • How useful might discursive positioning be as a perspective on learning? • What are the discourses at Wild Country Hall and how are they different to schooling discourses? • How might neo-Liberal discursive practices, including performativity and current schooling orthodoxies have affected the pedagogic practices at this centre? The review of literature provides an overview of the key literature on outdoor, adventure and experiential learning, considering these through the lenses of learning as acquisition, participation and transformation, before …

Volcanic Risk Assessment: Integrating Hazard And Social Vulnerability Analysis, Sara Louise Hayes Jan 2011

Volcanic Risk Assessment: Integrating Hazard And Social Vulnerability Analysis, Sara Louise Hayes

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The vulnerability of communities at risk from volcanic activity at Volcan Tungurahua, Ecuador and Mount Rainier in the USA provided the focus for this thesis. The research aimed to develop an integrated approach to risk assessments that combined both hazard and vulnerability analysis. In phase one, the study developed a novel methodology to assess volcanic threat that utilised previously published data. This semi-quantitative approach integrated measures of both hazard and exposure factors, allowing the relative threat to different communities to be ranked. By avoiding the complex quantitative analysis associated with traditional risk assessments of the multiple hazards associated with volcanic …

Stratigraphy And Palaeoenvironment Of The Paleocene/Eocene Boundary Interval In The Indus Basin, Pakistan, Muhammad Hanif Jan 2011

Stratigraphy And Palaeoenvironment Of The Paleocene/Eocene Boundary Interval In The Indus Basin, Pakistan, Muhammad Hanif

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Marine sedimentary sections across the Paleocene/Eocene (P/E) boundary interval are preserved in the Patala Formation (Upper Indus Basin) and Dungan Formation (Lower Indus Basin), Pakistan. The P/E interval of the Patala Formation is composed of limestone and shale inter-beds indicating deposition on a carbonate platform. The analysis of larger foraminifera across the P/E interval from the Patala Formation (Kala Chitta Ranges), allows the recognition of the Larger Foraminiferal Turnover (LFT). The Larger Foraminiferal Turnover (LFT) observed in the Patala Formation is associated with the PETM (Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum) global climatic event and allows the recognition of the P/E boundary …

Transnational Spaces Within The European Union: The Geographies Of British Migrants In France, Fiona Ferbrache Jan 2011

Transnational Spaces Within The European Union: The Geographies Of British Migrants In France, Fiona Ferbrache

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Tensions exist in the way that the European Union is conceptualised. How do we reconcile the persistence of a Europe of fragmented nation-states and the European integration project based on the principle of free movement? This duality is indicative of different geographical visions: between space defined as places and space defined as unifying flows. While places tend to be associated with fixed territories and borders, it is argued that complex global flows and connections may disrupt such notions. Addressing these theoretical tensions, this thesis examines transnational frameworks for discussing the reconfiguration of borders and spaces within the European Union. The …

Production And Preservation Of The Arctic Sea Ice Diatom Biomarker Ip25, Thomas Brown Jan 2011

Production And Preservation Of The Arctic Sea Ice Diatom Biomarker Ip25, Thomas Brown

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The presence of the sea ice biomarker IP25 in Arctic marine sediments has previously been used as a proxy measure of past sea ice conditions in the Arctic. Although the sea ice diatom origin of IP25 was established previously, the nature of its production within sea ice, along with its transport through the water column to underlying sediments and its short-term preservation therein, had not been investigated in any significant detail. Variations in the concentration of the sea ice diatom biomarker IP25, were measured in sea ice collected from the eastern Beaufort Sea and Amundsen Gulf from January to June …

Multidimensional Epidemiological Transformations: Addressing Location-Privacy In Public Health Practice, Philip Abdelmalik Jan 2011

Multidimensional Epidemiological Transformations: Addressing Location-Privacy In Public Health Practice, Philip Abdelmalik

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The ability to control one’s own personally identifiable information is a worthwhile human right that is becoming increasingly vulnerable. However just as significant, if not more so, is the right to health. With increasing globalisation and threats of natural disasters and acts of terrorism, this right is also becoming increasingly vulnerable. Public health practice – which is charged with the protection, promotion and mitigation of the health of society and its individuals – has been at odds with the right to privacy. This is particularly significant when location privacy is under consideration. Spatial information is an important aspect of public …

Population Growth In A High Amenity Area: Migration And Socio-Economic Change In Cornwall, Katarzyna Kowalczuk Jan 2011

Population Growth In A High Amenity Area: Migration And Socio-Economic Change In Cornwall, Katarzyna Kowalczuk

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The thesis provides a deeper understanding of migration flows to high amenity areas using the example of migration to and from Cornwall. Cornwall is a remote, non-metropolitan county which has been experiencing very strong population growth since the 1970s almost solely due to in-migration. There are several aspects of the project that should contribute to an understanding of internal migration in England and Wales. First, a cohort analysis of migrants brings insights into the migration strategies of in-migrants and out-migrants throughout the period. Using the case of Cornwall allows the examination of migration patterns in a peripheral location where commuting …

Cobalt Biogeochemistry In The Atlantic Ocean Using Flow Injection-Chemiluminescence, Rachel Shelley Jan 2011

Cobalt Biogeochemistry In The Atlantic Ocean Using Flow Injection-Chemiluminescence, Rachel Shelley

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

As ~ 50% of global photosynthesis occurs in marine environments, the factors regulating this process e.g. trace metal availability, have an impact on the global carbon cycle. The key cyanobacteria genera Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus have an absolute requirement for Co. Dissolved cobalt (dCo) concentrations in the open ocean are extremely low (5–120 pM). A sensitive flow injection technique using chemiluminescence detection (FI-CL) was developed (detection limit 4.5 pM dCo, RSD ≤ 4%). Seawater samples must be UV-irradiated prior to analysis, in order to liberate organically-bound Co. A field study in the Sargasso Sea, demonstrated that aerosol Co was significantly more …

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This dissertation, Communicating Air: Alternative Pathways to Environmental Knowing through Computational Ecomedia, is the culmination of an art practice-led investigation into ways in which the production of ecomedia may open alternative pathways to environmental knowing in a time of urgent climate crisis. This thesis traces the author’s artistic, personal and political development across the period of study and presents an extended argument for greater public engagement with weather and climate science, greater public and private support for long-term collaborations between media art and climate science, and increased public open access to global weather and climate monitoring and computationally modelled data.

The Construction Of Sport Heritage Attractions, Gregory Ramshaw Jan 2011

The Construction Of Sport Heritage Attractions, Gregory Ramshaw

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Sport can be heritage, and sport heritage attractions such as halls of fame, museums, and stadium tours can be one of the more potent forms of heritage tourism. However, few studies have examined sport heritage attractions, nor considered their construction. This paper examines three ways in which sport heritage attractions are constructed, exploring in particular the human dimensions of sport heritage, the link between sport heritage and legacy, and the relationship between sport heritage, tourism and globalization. Several outcomes of these constructions are examined, both in terms of the representation sport heritage as well as implications for the attractions themselves. …

Diversification Of The Tourist Landscape On Ghana’S Atlantic Coast: Forts, Castles And Beach Hotel / Resort Operations In The Tourism Industry, Edward Addo

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

European settlements, trans-Atlantic trade in commodities and slaves, and colonization are indispensable components of Ghana’s political history, heritage, and tourism industry. European forts and castles built as far back as 1482 still characterize the Atlantic coast of Ghana. Since March 6, 1957 when Ghana became the first sub-Sahara African country to gain political independence from European colonial rule, the country has faced many socio-economic and political challenges. Tourism did not receive significant political attention until the late 1990s. In more recent years, the industry has experienced remarkable growth and increasing operations of beach hotels and resorts on the Atlantic coast …
