Resource Management In Location Aware Cognitive Radio Networks, Suryabh Sharma Jan 2011

Resource Management In Location Aware Cognitive Radio Networks, Suryabh Sharma

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) aims at utilizing spectral opportunities both in time and frequency domains at any given location, which arise due to variations in spectrum usage. Recently, Cognitive radios (CRs) have been proposed as a means of implementing DSA. In this work we focus on the aspect of resource management in overlaid CRNs. We formulate resource allocation strategies for cognitive radio networks (CRNs) as mathematical optimization problems. Specifically, we focus on two key problems in resource management: Sum Rate Maximization and Maximization of Number of Admitted Users. Since both the above mentioned problems are NP hard due to presence …

Modeling And Classifying Variable Width Riparian Zones Utilizing Digital Elevation Models, Flood Height Data, Digital Soil Data And National Wetlands Inventory : A New Approach For Riparian Zone Delineation, Sinan A. Abood Jan 2011

Modeling And Classifying Variable Width Riparian Zones Utilizing Digital Elevation Models, Flood Height Data, Digital Soil Data And National Wetlands Inventory : A New Approach For Riparian Zone Delineation, Sinan A. Abood

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Riparian zones are dynamic, transitional ecosystems between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems with well defined vegetation and soil characteristics. Development of an all-encompassing definition for riparian ecotones, because of their high variability, is challenging. However, there are two primary factors that all riparian ecotones are dependent on: the watercourse and its associated floodplain. Previous approaches to riparian boundary delineation have utilized fixed width buffers, but this methodology has proven to be inadequate as it only takes the watercourse into consideration and ignores critical geomorphology, associated vegetation and soil characteristics. Our approach offers advantages over other previously used methods by utilizing: the …

Afghanistan Connection : Heroin Production, Distribution, And Consumption , Brandon J. Swartz

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Heroin prices are a reflection of supply and demand, and similar to any other market, profits motivate participation. The intent of this research is to examine the change in Afghan opium production due to political conflict affecting Europe’s heroin market and government policies. If the Taliban remain in power, or a new Afghan government is formed, the changes will affect the heroin market in Europe to a certain degree. In the heroin market, the degree of change is dependent on many socioeconomic forces such as law enforcement, corruption, and proximity to Afghanistan. An econometric model that examines the degree of …

The Power Of Squares: Ideology In Landscape Archaeology And The Rectangular Land Survey Of The United States Of America, Owen O'Reilly Jan 2011

The Power Of Squares: Ideology In Landscape Archaeology And The Rectangular Land Survey Of The United States Of America, Owen O'Reilly

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Rectangular Land Survey, which covers 69 percent of the Unites States continuously, was a system of federal land management that began in 1785 and continued into the early twentieth century. Straight, gridded patterns were stretched across the country in an attempt to make the consolidation and distribution of land by the United States government quick and easy. Using the Dominant Ideology Thesis, developed by Louis Althusser, and applied to landscape archaeology by Mark Leone, the rectangular land survey can be seen as an attempt by the government of the United States to control the lives of their citizens through …

Through Our Eyes: A Qualitative Study Of Indian Mothers And Their Perceptions Of Autism, Jessy Sara Jacob Pathappillil

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This qualitative study focuses on the awareness and perceptions of autism among Indian mothers residing in the United States. Through a semi-structure interview, the author examined the responses of Indian mothers regarding what life would be like for an Indian mother who has a child with autism. The results indicated that there continues to be a lack of awareness regarding autism because of the high levels of stigma associated with any form of mental illness. Mothers felt that the lives of an Indian mother and her child who has autism would be difficult because of complex cultural expectations and traditions. …

Lexington Humane Society: Analysis Of Volunteers, D'Arcy Robb

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The Lexington Humane Society depends substantially on volunteer labor yet suffers from a high volunteer attrition rate. Using data from the organization’s database and a survey of volunteers, this project paints a demographic picture of the volunteer population and identifies traits that affect volunteer longevity.

The evidence shows that the organization’s volunteers are overwhelmingly likely to be pet-owning women with no children at home who are motivated to volunteer because it allows them to act on their values. Middle-age individuals are more likely than those under 25 or over 65 to become long term volunteers, and individuals who have recently …

Intellectual Property, Innovation, And The Future: Toward A Better Model For Educating Leaders In Intellectual Property Law, Robert W. Gomulkiewicz

Articles

Intellectual property (IP) sits at the center of the global economy. Today, producers and users of intellectual property come from both developed and developing nations. Intellectual property matters as much to China and India as it does to Germany and the United States. This reality has driven a monumental demand for lawyers who have expertise in intellectual property law. These lawyers are the new leaders in intellectual property law.

The global demand for intellectual property law-trained lawyers triggered a "big bang" in the creation of advanced intellectual property law programs (IP Programs) at American law schools. The new leaders in …

Diabrotica barberi Smith & Lawrence and Diabrotica longicornis (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) are considered to be sister species, and it has been proposed that the two species may hybridize under field conditions. The objective of this study was to examine genetic and morphological characters of D. barberi and D. longicornis for evidence of field introgression. Both species were collected from sympatric and allopatric areas. Amplified fragment length polymorphisms and morphological characters (color and head capsule width) were used to examine variation within and among populations of D. barberi and D. longicornis. Relatively little of the overall …

Librarianship Presence In Virtual Worlds, Jenny M. Baum, Kate Lyons Jan 2011

Librarianship Presence In Virtual Worlds, Jenny M. Baum, Kate Lyons

Publications and Research

Librarianship has stereotypically been about books, communities, and the connection between the two. With the emergence of new media and technology, the concept of books has expanded to include information of all types and in multiple formats: eBooks, DVDs, videogames, electronic databases, et cetera. Meanwhile, the idea of community has stayed the same. For example, public libraries primarily serve communities defined by geographic lines; academic libraries serve their campus communities. In non-profit, medical or corporate libraries, communities are defined by their organization’s particular mission. However, now that virtual worlds are becoming mainstream, librarians are redefining community, just as they redefined …

Upscaling Carbon Fluxes Over The Great Plains Grasslands: Sinks And Sources, Li Zhang, Bruce K. Wylie, Lei Ji, Tagir G. Gilmanov, Larry L. Tieszen, Daniel M. Howard

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Previous studies suggested that the grasslands may be carbon sinks or near equilibrium, and they often shift between carbon sources in drought years and carbon sinks in other years. It is important to understand the responses of net ecosystem production (NEP) to various climatic conditions across the U.S. Great Plains grasslands. Based on 15 grassland flux towers, we developed a piecewise regression model and mapped the grassland NEP at 250 m spatial resolution over the Great Plains from 2000 to 2008. The results showed that the Great Plains was a net sink with an averaged annual NEP of 24 ± …

Some Think Of The Future: Internet, Electronic, And Telephonic Labor Representation Electionslabor Representation Elections, William A. Herbert, Sara Slinn

Publications and Research

Amid the scholarly dialogue regarding amending labor certification procedures, there have been calls for the adoption of internet, electronic and/or telephonic representation voting (IETV) procedures in representation elections. To date, most labor relations agencies in the United States and Canada have not implemented IETV. Three notable exceptions are the National Mediation Board (NMB) and the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) in the United States, and the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). This article explores the strengths and weaknesses of IETV and the potential for wider adoption of this technology in the representation election context. The article examines NMB’s rationale in …

Creating A Successful Volunteer Board Of Directors, Julie Hering Kent

Graduate Research Papers

Most nonprofit organizations depend on the volunteers who serve on their board of directors to guide them and help carry out their mission. The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics which make these leaders effective in their roles. The study will also look at the volunteers' responsibilities to the organizations which they serve. Finally, organizations need to be aware of what motivates these volunteers and how they can use these motivations to their advantage. To have a successful board of directors, executive directors must understand how to effectively identify, recruit and train the individuals who serve on …

Population Biology Of A Coastal Dune-Dwelling Spider (Arctosa Sanctaerosae) Along The Hurricane Disturbed Northern Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Robert A. Hataway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the continued increase in the number of tourists visiting the Northern Gulf coast in the last century and the resulting development of this coastline the habitat of Arctosa sanctaerosae has become fragmented; and the sprawl of large cities along the coast has further degraded available habitat. In addition to anthropogenic disturbance to this coastal region, hurricanes are an additional and natural perturbation to the ecosystem. This habitat has seen a number of major tropical storms over the last decade and I have sought to explore the impact of habitat destruction and storm-induced disturbance on a species of spider endemic …
