The Use Of Geomorphic Principles In Natural Channel Design: The State 5f“River Restoration Practice In Southern Ontario, Canada, Nina Diane Sampson Jan 2011

The Use Of Geomorphic Principles In Natural Channel Design: The State 5f“River Restoration Practice In Southern Ontario, Canada, Nina Diane Sampson

Digitized Theses

River restoration and natural channel design attempt to (re)construct channels to emulate the self-sustaining geomorphic and ecologic function of natural watercourses. The practice of river restoration and natural channel design has occurred in Ontario for over two decades, but there has not yet been a review of design approaches and methodologies utilized to achieve the aforementioned function and the overall state of stream design practice. Using the stream design projects in rivers within the jurisdiction of Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and Credit Valley Conservation, two Ontario watershed- based river management agencies, forty-six stream design projects were reviewed and analyzed …

Predicting Channel Geometry Based On Urban Land Use And Riparian Vegetation: Lower Rideau River Catchment, North Eastern Ontario, Amanda Leslie-Ann Brunet

Digitized Theses

The effects of urbanization (or impervious surface cover) on the hydrology and the morphology of streams have been studied for decades, but little attention has been put towards investigating the influence that different riparian vegetation conditions may have under situations of increasing urbanization (Hession et al., 2003). Four urban and four natural nearly contiguous sub-watersheds were selected from the Rideau River Watershed of North-Eastern Ontario to control for all significant channel-forming variables, except riparian vegetation and urbanization. It was found that only channel depths (and width/depth ratio) respond to increases in TIA and at a threshold of 5%. However, bank …

The Case For A Commerce Clause Challenge To State Antitrust Laws Banning Minimum Resale Price Maintenance, Barbara O. Bruckmann Jan 2011

The Case For A Commerce Clause Challenge To State Antitrust Laws Banning Minimum Resale Price Maintenance, Barbara O. Bruckmann

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This article explores the circumstances under which inconsistent state antitrust regulation of minimum resale price maintenance (or RPM) may be unconstitutional under the dormant Commerce Clause. In particular, a handful of states purport to prohibit RPM and thus conflict with the substantive treatment of RPM under the antitrust laws of other states. This conflict among the states stems from the Supreme Court's recent decision in Leegin Creative Leather Products, Inc. v. PSKS, Inc., 551 U.S. 877 (2007), in which the Court overturned its near-century old prohibition under the Sherman Act, and held instead that RPM should be assessed under a …

I Can Has Lawyer? The Conflict Between The Participatory Culture Of The Internet And The Legal Profession, Lucille A. Jewel Jan 2011

I Can Has Lawyer? The Conflict Between The Participatory Culture Of The Internet And The Legal Profession, Lucille A. Jewel

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The Internet allows citizens to comment on public affairs with an amplified and unfiltered voice, creating an open, community-based "participatory culture" where robust debate flourishes. However, many of the ideals and practices of participatory culture clash with the traditional legal culture as it exists in the United States. This cultural conflict can be seen in emerging narratives, in the form of web blogs and lawyer emails that go "viral," in which lawyers comment on the lack of humanism within big law firm hiring and firing practices; expose the alienating work environments experienced by low-level contract attorneys; or criticize judges who …

Are Amenities Important For The Migration Of Highly Educated Workers? The Role Of Built-Amenities In The Migration Of Highly Educated Workers, Mijin Joo

ETD Archive

Across the past two decades, public officials have debated and social scientists have studied the importance of tourist amenities in attracting and retaining human capital. Few studies, however, have examined the relationship between tourist amenities and the migration of educated workers. Information of this nature is needed by public officials considering the best use of tax dollars to attract human capital and advance local economies. This dissertation addresses this need an analysis of the relationship between built amenities and the migration of educated workers. This study's focus was on the importance of built amenities such as sports facilities, museums, and …

The Good People Of Newburgh: Yankee Identity And Industrialization In A Cleveland Neighborhood, 1850-1882, Judith A. Mackeigan Jan 2011

The Good People Of Newburgh: Yankee Identity And Industrialization In A Cleveland Neighborhood, 1850-1882, Judith A. Mackeigan

ETD Archive

In 1850 the village and township of Newburgh, six miles southeast of Cleveland was a farming community sparsely populated by families who were predominantly of New England descent. Within two decades several iron and steel mills had been erected just north of the village, while a large state hospital for the mentally ill had been built just south of the village. The population of the area increased dramatically as English, Welsh, Irish, and finally Polish immigrants arrived to work in the mills. In 1873 the village of Newburgh and much of the surrounding township was annexed by the city of …

Measuring The Environmental Impact Of Embedded/Bankfull Culverts, Joseph A. Pavlick Jan 2011

Measuring The Environmental Impact Of Embedded/Bankfull Culverts, Joseph A. Pavlick

ETD Archive

Streams are dynamic systems constantly changing over time. The health of a stream system is tied to the amount of sedimentation occurring in a stream. The addition of roadway culverts into a stream has been shown to cause erosion and sedimentation problems if the culvert does not meet stream characteristics of slope, bankfull/width, and channel orientation. This has led to the design of embedded/bankfull culverts. In the State of Ohio, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Army Corps of Engineers now require the Ohio Transportation to install embedded/bankfull culverts at all stream locations during new roadway construction. …

Culturally-Responsive Dance: Building Community One Step At A Time, Jeanette Jackson

ETD Archive

James Catterall's, (1997) report, "Involvement in the Arts and Success in Secondary School", espoused the need for Arts Education. Finding that students who were involved in the arts had increased motivation, school attendance, and positive attitudes, this longitudinal study became a national model of Arts Education advocacy. Landson Billings (1995) assertion that culturally-relevant pedagogy is a pillar for student success is but a further expansion of Ogbu (1987) which stated that "A culturally relevant pedagogy must provide a way for students to maintain their cultural identity while succeeding academically" (p. 155).Although the academic world has reflected and responded to the …

A Parallel Computing Approach To Fast Geostatistical Areal Interpolation, Qingfeng Guan, Phaedon Kyriakidis, Michael Goodchild Jan 2011

A Parallel Computing Approach To Fast Geostatistical Areal Interpolation, Qingfeng Guan, Phaedon Kyriakidis, Michael Goodchild

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

Areal interpolation is the procedure of using known attribute values at a set of (source) areal units to predict unknown attribute values at another set of (target) units. Geostatistical areal interpolation employs spatial prediction algorithms, i.e., variants of Kriging, which explicitly incorporate spatial autocorrelation and scale differences between source and target units in the interpolation endeavor. When all the available source measurements are used for interpolation, i.e., when a global search neighborhood is adopted, geostatistical areal interpolation is extremely computationally intensive. Interpolation in this case requires huge memory space and massive computing power, even with the dramatic improvement introduced by …

Interoperability And Information Sharing, Sean P. Varano, Thomas J. Dover Jan 2011

Interoperability And Information Sharing, Sean P. Varano, Thomas J. Dover

Justice Studies Faculty Publications

Communication and information sharing are two of the most pressing issues facing the public safety community today. In previous chapters of this volume, authors have made note of the changing public safety landscape as it relates to the need for enhanced information and intelligence sharing among a broad cross-section of organizations. Public safety organizations, particularly law enforcement agencies, have been quick to adopt emerging technologies that have allowed for greater communication and information sharing capacities. While substantial improvements have been made over the decades that enhanced communication and information sharing, many challenges remain in the move to seamlessly integrated communication …

Communities As Allies, Joseph Schafer, Sean P. Varano, Nicholas Libby Jan 2011

Communities As Allies, Joseph Schafer, Sean P. Varano, Nicholas Libby

Justice Studies Faculty Publications

A popular axiom attributed to British policing is the police are the public and the public are the police. Inherent in this term is a blurring of the distinction between the police and the public they serve; the police are cast as being little different from the citizenry and citizens are cast into a role of responsibility for the safety and well-being of the community. In effect, communities are framed as allies in the fight to ensure safe and secure neighborhoods. Across space and time this idea has held uneven sway within American policing ideologies. This essay considers the relationship …

The Nature And Origins Of Dually Diverse Neighborhoods, Jackie Michelle Cutsinger Jan 2011

The Nature And Origins Of Dually Diverse Neighborhoods, Jackie Michelle Cutsinger

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study investigates the extent to which neighborhoods that are both racially and economically diverse, hereafter referred to as dually diverse neighborhoods, exist within the metropolitan landscape of the United States and what factors contribute to the emergence of such neighborhoods. Using the Neighborhood Change Database, this study defines what a diverse neighborhood is and gives a descriptive portrait of the characteristics of these neighborhoods. The entropy index (H) is used as the measure of neighborhood diversity because of its ability to take into account the presence of more than two groups, unlike other more commonly used measures of segregation …

The Challenge Of Transcultural Competence: Background Reading Of Target Culture Current Events Articles, Norbert Hedderich Jan 2011

The Challenge Of Transcultural Competence: Background Reading Of Target Culture Current Events Articles, Norbert Hedderich

Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

At the lower and intermediate-levels of language instruction, students do not have sufficient language proficiency to inform themselves about current events in the target language. Knowledge of current events is an important part of cultural competence and should not be absent from instruction because of linguistic restrictions. This article proposes to remedy this problem, by creating out-of-class reading assignments of current events articles from US and international English language news sources. The article provides practical information on selection criteria for articles, suggests news sources, and gives examples of assignments.

Vietnamese Students Abroad: A Research Framework, Le Nhat Tran Jan 2011

Vietnamese Students Abroad: A Research Framework, Le Nhat Tran

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, a critique of the current literature on the acculturation experience of Vietnamese international students is provided. Second, a review of the distinctive cultural-historical traits of Vietnamese international students is presented, demonstrating their differences relative to other Asian sojourning groups as well as other Vietnamese migrant groups. A third purpose of this paper is to present a Vietnamesespecific psychological acculturation framework that might pave the theoretical foundation for investigations on the acculturation experience of Vietnamese international students. This framework is based upon Berry’s (1997) acculturation framework, and De Jong and Fawcett’s (1981) value-expectancy …

Host Acculturation Orientation: Some Preliminary Impressions Of The French Students On Ethnic Minority Groups In Montpellier, S. France, Jyoti Verma

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The objective was to study the host acculturation orientation of a sample of 100 French students of a S. France University. For this purpose a nine-items Host Acculturation Scale was used. Observations gave the impression that the students considered it significantly ‘more important’ that the immigrants maintained their heritage culture in their homes rather than doing so in general or at the workplace. Furthermore, it was considered only ‘partially important’ that the immigrants adopted the French norms, values and customs in general and at the workplace, and ‘not important at all’ that they did so in their homes. Ethnic groups …

State Of The Climate In 2010, Jessica Blunden, Derek S. Arndt, Molly O. Baringer Jan 2011

State Of The Climate In 2010, Jessica Blunden, Derek S. Arndt, Molly O. Baringer

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Several large-scale climate patterns influenced climate conditions and weather patterns across the globe during 2010. The transition from a warm El Niño phase at the beginning of the year to a cool La Niña phase by July contributed to many notable events, ranging from record wetness across much of Australia to historically low Eastern Pacific basin and near-record high North Atlantic basin hurricane activity. The remaining five main hurricane basins experienced below- to well-below-normal tropical cyclone activity. The negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation was a major driver of Northern Hemisphere temperature patterns during 2009/10 winter and again in late …

Evolution Of Natural History Information In The 21st Century – Developing An Integrated Framework For Biological And Geographical Data, Deborah A. Reusser, Henry Lee Ii

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Threats to marine and estuarine species operate over many spatial scales, from nutrient enrichment at the watershed/estuarine scale to invasive species and climate change at regional and global scales. To help address research questions across these scales, we provide here a standardized framework for a biogeographical information system containing queriable biological data that allows extraction of information on multiple species, across a variety of spatial scales based on species distributions, natural history attributes and habitat requirements. As scientists shift from research on localized impacts on individual species to regional and global scale threats, macroecological approaches of studying multiple species over …

Embracing Panarchy, Building Resilience And Integrating Adaptive Management Through A Rebirth Of The National Environmental Policy Act, Melinda Harm Benson, Ahjond S. Garmestani Jan 2011

Embracing Panarchy, Building Resilience And Integrating Adaptive Management Through A Rebirth Of The National Environmental Policy Act, Melinda Harm Benson, Ahjond S. Garmestani

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Environmental law plays a key role in shaping policy for sustainability of socialeecological systems. In particular, the types of legal instruments, institutions, and the response of law to the inherent variability in socialeecological systems are critical. Sustainability likely must occur via the institutions we have in place, combined with alterations in policy and regulation within the context of these institutions. This ecosystem management arrangement can be characterized as a panarchy, with research on sustainability specific to the scale of interest. In this manuscript we examine an opportunity for integrating these concepts through a regulatory rebirth of the National Environmental Policy …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We estimated the abundance of humpback whales in the North Pacific by capture recapture methods using over 18,000 fluke identification photographs collected in 2004–2006. Our best estimate of abundance was 21,808 (CV=0.04). We estimated the biases in this value using a simulation model. Births and deaths, which violate the assumption of a closed population, resulted in a bias of +5.2%, exclusion of calves in samples resulted in a bias of−10.5%, failure to achieve random geographic sampling resulted in a bias of −0.4%, and missed matches resulted in a bias of +9.3%. Known sex-biased sampling favoring males in breeding areas did …

The Minimization Of The Screen Bias From Ancient Western Mediterranean Air Temperature Records: An Exploratory Statistical Analysis, Manola Brunet, Jesús Asin, Javier Sigró, Manuel Bañón, Francisco García, Enric Aguilar, Juan Esteban Palenzuela, Thomas C. Peterson, Phil Jones Jan 2011

The Minimization Of The Screen Bias From Ancient Western Mediterranean Air Temperature Records: An Exploratory Statistical Analysis, Manola Brunet, Jesús Asin, Javier Sigró, Manuel Bañón, Francisco García, Enric Aguilar, Juan Esteban Palenzuela, Thomas C. Peterson, Phil Jones

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Here we present an exploratory statistical analysis aimed at the minimization of the ‘screen bias’ from affected ancient air temperature time series over the Western Mediterranean. Our approach lies in the statistical analysis of about 6 years of daily paired temperature observations taken using the ancient Montsouri shelter and the modern Stevenson screen for daily maximum (Tx) and minimum (Tn) temperature data recorded at two experimental sites: the meteorological gardens of La Coruña and Murcia, Spain (locations under the influence of the Oceanic/Atlantic/Galician and Mediterranean arid and semi-arid climate types, respectively), where ongoing field trials have …

Global Mismatch Between Research Effort And Conservation Needs Of Tropical Coral Reefs, Rebecca Fisher, Ben T. Radford, Nancy Knowlton, Russell E. Brainard, Frances B. Michaelis, M. Julian Caley

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Tropical coral reefs are highly diverse and globally threatened. Management to ensure their persistence requires sound biological knowledge in regions where coral reef biodiversity and/or the threats to it are greatest. This paper uses a novel text analysis approach and Google Maps™ to examine the spatial coverage of scientific papers on coral reefs listed in Web of Science® . Results show that research is highly clumped spatially, positively related to per capita gross domestic product, negatively related to coral species richness, and unrelated to threats to coral reefs globally; indicating a serious mismatch between conservation needs and the knowledge …
