My Teacher Sux! [Censored]: Protecting Students' Right To Free Speech On The Internet, 28 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 385 (2011), Katherine Hokenson

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

This comment will discusses the problem posed by student speech made on the Internet, how free speech issues are generally addressed by courts, the Supreme Court cases that have specifically addressed the First Amendment rights of students, and factors that courts dealing with student speech made on the Internet have attempted to use in their decisions. The comment will further look at how courts have analyzed online student speech cases in light of available Supreme Court precedent, and will propose that the Court adopt a hybrid of the Tinker test when addressing student speech made on the Internet, which will …

Economists On Deregulation Of The American Legal Profession: Praise And Critique, Benjamin H. Barton Jan 2011

Economists On Deregulation Of The American Legal Profession: Praise And Critique, Benjamin H. Barton

Scholarly Works

Both law professors and economists are discussing deregulation of the American legal profession, often without consulting each other. This symposium essay reviews the book length deregulation argument entitled First Thing We Do, Let’s Deregulate All the Lawyers. The essay argues that Let’s Deregulate is a tremendous addition to the literature: it disregards laws various professional shibboleths and offers a crisp and persuasive argument that the current barriers to entry are very, very costly to law students, clients, and society at large. Let’s Deregulate estimates the 2004 lawyers’ earning premium at $64 billion. The estimation is high, but well supported. Even …

I Can Has Lawyer? The Conflict Between The Participatory Culture Of The Internet And The Legal Profession, Lucille A. Jewel Jan 2011

I Can Has Lawyer? The Conflict Between The Participatory Culture Of The Internet And The Legal Profession, Lucille A. Jewel

Scholarly Works

The Internet allows citizens to comment on public affairs with an amplified and unfiltered voice, creating an open, community-based culture where robust debate flourishes. However, many of the ideals and practices of participatory culture clash with the traditional legal culture as it exists in the United States. This cultural conflict can be seen in emerging narratives, in the form of web blogs and lawyer emails that go “viral,” in which lawyers comment on the lack of humanism within big law firm hiring and firing practices; expose the alienating work environments experienced by low-level contract attorneys; or criticize judges who show …

The growing instability in Mexico due to the actions of the various drug trafficking organizations (DTOs), government corruption, possible human rights abuses and Mexican insurgent groups is examined in order to understand why the Mexican state may fail.

This thesis explores the implications of Mexican state failure on U.S. national security by providing possible scenarios such as continued operations into the United States by Mexican drug trafficking organizations, DTO relationships with American street gangs, regional instability, possible exploitation of the Mexican homeland by terrorist organizations, U.S. …

Global Human Rights In An Age Of Consumerism, Joel Richard Pruce Jan 2011

Global Human Rights In An Age Of Consumerism, Joel Richard Pruce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation traces the emergence of the global human rights movement, investigates the role of popular culture as a vehicle for mobilization, and critically examines why the movement has failed to adequately politicize its supporters in the process. Beginning in the mid-1970s, a broad shift began to take place in which ordinary people were routinely confronted with human suffering, as conflict and crisis assumed a role as ritualized news events. The public response to these phenomena demonstrated a capacity for solidarity and engagement based on cosmopolitan premises. The inception of a collective ethos of compassion, an awareness of the other …

Recurrent Voluminous Sector Collapses At Volcán Barú, Panama, Julie A. Herrick

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Two volcanic debris avalanche deposits (VDADs), both attributed to sector collapse at Volcán Barú, Panama, have been identified after an investigation of deposits that covered more than a thousand square kilometers. The younger Barriles Deposit is constrained by two radiocarbon ages that are ~9 ka; the older Caisán Deposit is at or beyond the radiocarbon range, >43,500 ybp. The total runout length of the Caisán Deposit was ~50 km and it covers 1190 km2. The Barriles Deposit extended to about 45 km and covered an area of 966 km2, overlapping most of the Caisán. The VDADs …

“Getting Noticed”: Middle Childhood Incross-Cultural Perspective, David F. Lancy, M. Annette Grove

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Although rarely named, the majority of societies in the ethnographic record demarcate a period between early childhood and adolescence. Prominent signs of demarcation are: for the first time, pronounced gender separation in fact and in role definition; increased freedom of movement for boys while girls may be bound more tightly to their mothers; and heightened expectations for socially responsible behavior. But, above all, middle childhood is about coming out of the shadows of community life and assuming a distinct, lifetime character. Naming and other rites of passage sometimes acknowledge this transition, but it is, reliably, marked by the assumption or …

A Gis Tool For Plant Spatial Pattern Analysis, Yanli Zhang, Nathan Woodward, Daniel Unger, I-Kuai Hung, Brian P. Oswald, Kenneth W. Farrish

Faculty Publications

A GIS program, ArcPlantPattern, was developed with Visual Basic .NET and ArcObjects as an ArcGIS extension to assist the investigation of plant distribution patterns (species composition as occurrence probability and spacing as distances among species) and to design planting plan maps for patch planting. ArcPlantPattern is the first software of its kind. It can be used for arid and semiarid lands reclamation, burned area rehabilitation, or designing landscapes with a required plant community distribution. ArcPlantPattern may also be applicable to other spatial point pattern analysis, such as geology, geography and wildlife habitat.

A Paleolimnological Investigation Of The Impacts Of Recent Human Activity And Temperature Change On Two Small Lakes In Southern Ontario, Kelly Marie Alexander Jan 2011

A Paleolimnological Investigation Of The Impacts Of Recent Human Activity And Temperature Change On Two Small Lakes In Southern Ontario, Kelly Marie Alexander

Digitized Theses

ABSTRACT

The impacts of European land clearance and agriculture on two southern Ontario kettle lakes were investigated using paleolimnological techniques. Two ~ 50 cm-long sediment cores were retrieved from Edward Lake (shallow, polymictic) and North Pond (deep, dimictic). The cores were dated using 210Pb dating methods. Percentage organics, inferred chlorophyll a and fossil diatom assemblages record striking changes in both lakes following land clearance. Lake sediment records show that increased erosion and nutrient loading resulted in an abrupt, rapid change from an oligotrophic, benthic, clear-water state to a eutrophic, planktonic, turbid-water state. Edward Lake followed the pathway of change predicted …

Community Responses To Wind Energy Development In Ontario, Emmanuel Songsore Jan 2011

Community Responses To Wind Energy Development In Ontario, Emmanuel Songsore

Digitized Theses

The Province of Ontario has one of the most radical jurisdictions in the developed world for supporting and promoting renewable energy development. Legislatively, the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009 is aimed at making Ontario a global leader in renewable energy development. Wind energy in particular represents one of the integral and controversial parts of these commitments. Several new installations have been built or announced and yet community opposition grows. Utilizing a media content analysis of national, regional and local newspapers circulated within the province of Ontario, this study documents and analyzes issues motivating community resistance to and/or support …

Determinants Of Diet Quality In Pregnancy: Does Geography Play A Role?, Danielle Marie Nash Jan 2011

Determinants Of Diet Quality In Pregnancy: Does Geography Play A Role?, Danielle Marie Nash

Digitized Theses

The objective of this study was to identify the individual- and community-level determinants of diet quality during pregnancy. Subjects included 2282 pregnant women in London, Ontario who participated in the Prenatal Health Project (PHP). Dietary intake was measured using a validated food frequency questionnaire and diet quality was assessed using the Diet Quality Index for Pregnancy. Participants of the PHP were linked to a geographic dataset by home address to determine the community-level variables using a geographic information system. Insignificant variability at the community-level resulted in an individual-level multivariable regression analysis instead of a multi-level. Our findings indicated that pregnant …

Indigenous Knowledge, Social Relationships And Health: Community-Based Participatory Research With Anishinabe Youth At Pic River First Nation, Katie Big-Canoe Jan 2011

Indigenous Knowledge, Social Relationships And Health: Community-Based Participatory Research With Anishinabe Youth At Pic River First Nation, Katie Big-Canoe

Digitized Theses

Canada’s First Nations youth endure a disproportionate burden of health inequalities. While patterns of First Nation’s youth health point to distinctly social causes (e.g., lacking social support, violence and addiction), research has not adequately explored how the quality of local social environments influence First Nations youth health. Drawing from 19 in-depth interviews with Anishinabe youth, this community-based project utilized an Indigenous Knowledge framework to explore youth perceptions of health, social relationships, and the ways they interact. This research centred around four main objectives including: 1) understanding how Anishinabe youth define health & well-being; 2) exploring youth perceptions of social relationships; …

Migration And Food Remittances - A Strategy For Ensuring Household Food Security In North-Western Ghana, Vincent Zubedaar Kuuire Jan 2011

Migration And Food Remittances - A Strategy For Ensuring Household Food Security In North-Western Ghana, Vincent Zubedaar Kuuire

Digitized Theses

The history of labour migration between the northern and southern regions of Ghana has been dominated by movement of migrants from the north to work in mining towns, cash crop growing towns and major government administrative cities in the south. Increasing environmental degradation in northern Ghana in recent decades together with adoption of structural adjustment programs in the country has led to a decline in the agricultural sector, causing a further increase in migration away from the area including the Upper West Region (UWR). A declining mining sector has also led to migration away from mining centres. The receiving areas …

Participatory Action Research On Food Security With Urban Women In Cap HaïTien, Haiti: A Feminist Political Ecology Approach, Susan Jennifer Vansteenkiste Jan 2011

Participatory Action Research On Food Security With Urban Women In Cap HaïTien, Haiti: A Feminist Political Ecology Approach, Susan Jennifer Vansteenkiste

Digitized Theses

In Cap Haitien, Haiti, thirty poor urban women volunteered to become participants in a Participatory Action Research project to investigate their own food insecurity. Drawing upon feminist political ecology literature, and combined with recent field work, this research maps the affect of Haiti’s changing food economy on the reproduction of local socio-economic patterns for the procurement of food. Qualitative semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were employed to elucidate the voices of urban female participants to explain how the global food economy and social norms shape the four arenas in which women bargain for food: the household, community, market and …

Response Of River Channel Morphology To Urbanization: The Case Of Highland Creek, Toronto, Ontario, 1954-2005, John Mcdonald Jan 2011

Response Of River Channel Morphology To Urbanization: The Case Of Highland Creek, Toronto, Ontario, 1954-2005, John Mcdonald

Digitized Theses

Current studies of urban channel form attempt to understand channel response to major changes in prevailing controlling conditions, mainly discharge. But very few studies actually track channel adjustment over the course of urbanization, ignoring the complexity of channel adjustment to other factors such as large floods and/or engineering. Seldom have these changes been analyzed in terms of expected adjustment from regime theory and the actual processes o f adjustment. Highland Creek in Toronto, Ontario has undergone a rapid transformation from mainly rural to almost completely urban land-use (85% of the drainage area) from 1954 to 2005. It has had a …

Remaking A Forestry Town: The Multifaceted Challenges Of Transition In Port Alberni, Bc, Emily Catherine Galley Jan 2011

Remaking A Forestry Town: The Multifaceted Challenges Of Transition In Port Alberni, Bc, Emily Catherine Galley

Digitized Theses

Since the early 1980s, British Columbia’s forestry sector i has undergone

widespread restructuring in the face of increasing international competition, resulting in

the loss of thousands of relatively low-skilled but high-waged jobs in the province’s

logging and milling operations. For the dozens of communities throughout the province

which have historically been heavily dependent on the forestry industry, this restructuring

has been an extremely difficult process, resulting in high rates of unemployment,

increased poverty, and an array of social problems, which are complicated by significant cultural dimensions of economic dislocation, such as the loss of identity and changing

The Formation Of Small-Scale Glacial Flutes: A Case Study Of The Castle Creek Forefield, Cariboo Mountains, Bc, Emma M. Reid Jan 2011

The Formation Of Small-Scale Glacial Flutes: A Case Study Of The Castle Creek Forefield, Cariboo Mountains, Bc, Emma M. Reid

Digitized Theses

The forefield of Castle Creek in the Caribou Mountains of B.C. contains abundant well developed small-scale glacial landforms. Detailed maps of flutes and annual moraines were produced from aerial photography and selected flutes were mapped in the field, together with sedimentological and fabric analyses. The results revealed a number of flutes with differing morphologies; long parallel-sided flutes and shorter tapering flutes, which become shorter and narrower with distance down flute, exist in different areas of the forefield. In addition there are flutes with bedrock ridges at their ice proximal ends, which appear similar to crag and tail features. Grain size …
